  • Allelopathic effects of the cork tree (Phellodendron amurense Rupr.) on several crops and soil miro-organisms were assessed using germination bioassay and antimicrobial assay, and allelochemicals were identified. In a germination bioassay, extract of cork tree inhibited at high concentration on germination of several crop seeds such as cabbage, lettuce, and cucumber. However, aqueous extracts inhibited powerfully growth of test organisms such as Streptococus aureus, S. aureus, S. typhimurium, and E. coli as bacteria, and Candida albicans as yeast, and Botrytis cineria and Alternata alternaria as fungi.. The cork tree extract showed strong antimicrobial activities against isolated soil fungi. The allelochemicals were separated using Silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography and HPLC. The substances were analyzed by UV spectrometry and EI-mass spectrometry. The active allelochemicals were identified as isoquinoline alkaloids, berberine and palmatine.

Phytotoxic Effects of Xanthium occidentale Extracts and Residues on Seedling Growth of Several Plant Species

  • Compositae plants are known to contain biologically active substances that are allelopathic to agricultural crops as well as weed species. Aqueous or methanol extracts and plant residues from leaves of Xanthium occidentale were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) to determine its allelopathic effects, and the results showed that the extracts applied onto filter paper significantly inhibited seed germination as well as root growth of alfalfa. Aqueous leaf extracts of $40g\;L^{-1}$ were completely inhibitory on root growth of alfalfa, while root growths of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) were less sensitive. Leaf residue incorporation at $100g\;kg^{-1}$ into soil on seedling growth of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) inhibited both shoot and root fresh weights of barnyard grass by 94 and $96\%$, respectively. Methanol extracts from BuOn and EtOAc fractions of X. occidentale reduced alfalfa root growth more than did those from hexane and water fractions. The results based on bioassay of extracts and residues show that X. occidentale had potent an allelopathic activity against other plant species.

Allelopathic and Autotoxic Effects of Alfalfa Plant and Soil Extracts

  • Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants have been reported to be autotoxic as well as allelopathic. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments through petri-dish and pot test were conducted to determine autotoxic effects of alfalfa leaf and soil extracts on the germination or early seedling growth of alfalfa, and to evaluate allelopathic effects of alfalfa leaf residues on alfalfa, barnyard grass, com, eclipta and soybean. Alfalfa seed germination was delayed depending on aqueous extract concentration, with no difference in final germination after 48 hours. Alfalfa root length was more sensitive to the autotoxic chemicals from leaf extracts than was germination or shoot length. Root growth of alfalfa was significantly inhibited at extract concentration of more than 1 g dry tissue/L (g $\textrm{L}^{-1}$). Hypocotyl growth, however, was not affected by all the concentrations of leaf extracts. Soil extracts from 4-yr-old alfalfa stand significantly reduced alfalfa root length by 66%, while soil extracts from 0,1, and 3yr-old stand stimulated root length up to 14-32% over the control. Residue incorporation with dry matters of alfalfa leaf at 100 g $\textrm{kg}^{-1}$ reduced seedling length of several crop and weed species, ranging from 53 to 87% inhibition. Addition of nutrient solution into alfalfa leaf extracts alleviated alfalfa autotoxic effect. This result indicates alfalfa leaf and soil extracts or residues could exert autotoxic as well as allelopathic substances into soil environments during and after establishment.

Allelopathic Potential and Antioxidant Activity of Leaf Extracts from Several Wild Plant Species

  • Several wild plant species are known to contain biologically active substances that are allelopathic to weed species as well as antioxidant to foods. Plant extracts or residues from leaves of 4 species, Achyranthes japonica (speedwell), Cucumis sativus (Cucumber), Trifolium repens (white clover), and Vicia angustifolia (narrowleaf vetch) were bioassayed against Medicago sativa (alfalfa) or Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyard grass) to determine their allelopathic effects, and used for measurement of antioxidant activities. The aqueous extracts applied on filter paper significantly inhibited root growth of alfalfa. Aqueous extracts or residues from V. angustifolia showed the most inhibitory effect on alfalfa or barnyard grass seedling growth and followed by A. japonica and T. repens. Oxidative stability by Rancimat method, antioxidant activity by TBA (2-thiobarbituric acid) method and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity for the ground samples or methanol extracts were the greatest in V. angustifolia, although were less than those of commonly used antioxidants, BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and ascorbic acid. These results suggest that the wild plant species had potent allelopathic and antioxidant activities, and that their activities differed depending on plant species.

호밀, 귀리 추출물로부터 제초활성물질 탐색 및 동정 (Screening and Identification of Natural Herbicidal Active Substance in Rye and Oat Extracts)

  • 고소득 작물인 인삼의 생산비 절감 및 고품질화를 위한 새로운 재배법을 확립하기 위하여 Allelopathic 식물이 함유하고 있는 제초활성물질 탐색 동정한 결과는 다음과 같다. 12종류의 표준품을 이용하여 호밀과 귀리의 추출물에 대한 Allelopathy 물질을 분석한 결과, 두 추출물간에 함유하는 물질의 차이를 보였으나 호밀에서는 benzoic acids계열인 salicylic acid(8.34mg/g), 귀리에서는 flavonone glycosides계열인 naringin(7.50mg/g)이 가장 많이 함유되어 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 동정된 표준품을 이용하여 $10^{-3}M$$10^{-4}M$에서 명아주 종자에 대한 발아율, 평균 발아 일수 및 발아세를 조사한 결과 대조구에 비하여 통계적으로 낮은 값을 보여 salicylic acid, naringin를 비롯하여 이러한 물질들이 Allelopathy를 나타내는 성분일 것으로 생각되었다.

도입종 애기수영의 생태 특성 (Ecological Characteristics of Introduced Species, Rumex acetosella)

  • Ecological characteristics of Rumex acetosella have been studied both in the laboratory and in the field. R. acetosella grows well straight up after germination, elongating and thickening their rhizomes with sprouts erupting along their bodies of the rhizome. The number and development of leaves and ramets reach their peak by April. The size of leaves and the cover degree of the plant increase from April to May. R. acetosella is an ephemeral, a short life mode plant, finishing its life cycle in July or August. The germination and seedling growth of selected species exposed to aqueous extracts of R. acetosella were in inverse proportion to concentration. The growth of Rumex japonicus and Digitaria sanguinalis cultivated in soil with R. acetosella was more inhibited than that of the control. Twelve chemical compounds were identified from R. acetosella by GC and HPLC and verified by bioassay with the same chemical reagents. It would be assdumed that these chemical substances are responsible for the allelopathic effect of R. acetosella. In short, R. acetosella plants grow vigorously from April and maintain their superior competitive ability to other plants in forming their communities by emitting chemical substances into their environment.

Phytotoxic Effect of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Leaf Extract on Seedling Growth of Crops and Weeds

  • Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is known to contain water-soluble substances that are biologically active. Aqueous or methanol extracts and residues from leaves of lettuce plants were assayed to determine their allelopathic effects, and the causative allelochemicals from fractions were quantified by means of HPLC analysis and bioassayed. Extracts from oven-dried leaf samples were more phytotoxic than those from freeze-dried samples. Leaf extracts of 40 g L$^{-1}$ were completely inhibitory on root growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), while root growths of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) were less sensitive. Early seedling growth of both alfalfa and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was significantly reduced by methanol leaf extracts. The major allelopathic substances analyzed by HPLC were coumarin, trans-cinnamic acid, o-coumaric acid, p-coumaric acid and chlorogenic acid. Of them p-coumaric acid was found as the greatest amount (8.9 mg 100 g$^{-1}$ ) in the EtOAc fraction; only coumarin was found in all the fractions. Hexane and EtOAc fractions of L. sativa reduced alfalfa root growth more than did BuOH and water fractions. These results suggest that lettuce had potent herbicidal activity, and that its activity differed depending on type and amount of causative compounds by fraction.

  • To verify allelopathic effects of Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, a number of laboratory experiments have been performed. Aqueous extracts of leaves, stems and roots of the above species inhibited the seed germination and seedling growth of experimental species, receptor plants. In general, the higher was the concentration of the extracts, the lower was the germination and the growth ratio. Volatile substances released from leaves of the donor plants also inhibited the seed germination and the radicle elongation of receptor plants. Therefore, to find out the inhibitory substances emitted from the wormwood, gas chromatography was employed. As a result of the analysis, 17 KDICical substances were isolated from the leaves and most of them were identified as phenolic compounds.

  • Juglans regia L. 나무밑에는 다른 식물이 잘 자라지 못하고 있다. 그래서 그 임상토양, 수용추출액, 빗물 등을 써서 작물을 심어 본 결과 발아와 생장이 심하게 억제되었다. 그 억제물질을 찾기 위해서 Juglans regia L. 나무의 수용추출액과 빗물을 종이크로마토그래피법으로 분석하여 ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid를 분리확인했으며, 이 물질들이 억제작용에 관계한 것으로 추정한다.
