  • Density functional calculations have been performed for the reactions of perfluoroalkylsilane and alkylsilane with silica surfaces. The (100) and (111) surfaces of ${\beta}-cristobalite$ are used as two possible models of the hydroxylated amorphous silica surface. This is the crystalline phase of silica with density and refractive index closest to those of amorphous silica. Moreover, two ${\beta}-cristobalite$ surfaces have the two types of silanol groups, namely the single silanols and the geminal silanols. We investigate the possible adsorption structure and formation energy of perfluoroalkylsilane and alkylsilane molecules with two type of silanol groups. The results will be compared with cluster and slab model.

  • We report a novel patterning method for a homo-polymeric poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanofilm particularly capable of strong adhesion to a $SiO_2$ surface. An oxidized silicon wafer substrate was micro-contact printed with n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayer, and subsequently its negative pattern was selfassembled with three different amino-functionalized alkylsilanes, (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APS), N- (2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (EDAS), and (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) diethylenetriamine (DETAS). Then, P3HT nanofilms were selectively grown on the aminosilane pre-patterned areas via the vapor phase polymerization method. To evaluate the adhesion, patterning, and the film itself, the PEDOT nanofilms and SAMs were investigated with a $Scotch^{(R)}$ tape test, contact angle analyzer, ATR-FT-IR, and optical and atomic force microscopes. The evaluation showed that the newly developed all bottom-up process can offer a simple and inexpensive patterning method for P3HT nanofilms robustly adhered to an oxidized Si wafer surface by the mediation of $FeCl_3$ and amino-functionalized alkylsilane SAMs.

  • The early stage of the self assembly for octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-based monolayers is investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Height measurements using AFM prove that the island height of the monolayers gradually increases with increasing the island size, and is close to the limiting value (h = $\sim$25 $\AA$) after d = $\sim$600 nm in size. Since the theoretical length of a covalently bound OTS molecule is 26.2 Å, the limiting value of the island height means that the islands with d ${\geq}$ 600 nm consist of close-packed, fully extended chains. The heights for the islands with d < 600 nm are lower than the limiting value and decrease with decreasing the island sizes. This observation indicates that the OTS molecules in the small islands are less densely packed, and that the packing densities of the islands increase as the islands grow in size.

  • We report a low-temperature fabrication of organic/inorganic nanohybrid dielectrics for organic thin film transistors. The self-assembled organic layers (SAOLs) were grown by repeated sequential adsorptions of C=C-terminated alkylsilane and metal (Al or Ti) hydroxyl with ozone activation, which was called "molecular layer deposition (MLD)". The $TiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ inorganic layers were grown by ALD, which relies on sequential saturated surface reactions resulting in the formation of a monolayer in each sequence and is a potentially powerful method for preparing high quality multicomponent superlattices. The MLD method combined with ALD (MLD-ALD) was applied to fabricate SAOLs-$Al_2O_3$-SAOLs-$TiO_2$ nanohybrid superlattices on polymer substrates at relatively low temperature. The MLD method is an ideal fabrication technique for various flexible electronic devices.

  • Application of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to the fabrication of organic thin film transistor has been recently reported very often since it can help to provide ohmic contact between films as well as to form simple and effective electrode pattern. Accordingly, quality of these ultra-thin films is becoming more imperative. In this study, in order to manufacture a high quality SAM pattern, a hydrophobic alkylsilane monolayer and a hydrophilic aminosilane monolayer were selectively coated on $SiO_2$ surface through the consecutive procedures of a micro-contact printing (${\mu}CP$) and dip-coating methods under extremely dry condition. On a SAM pattern cleaned with SC1 solution immediately after ${\mu}CP$, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) source and drain electrode array were very selectively and nicely vapour phase polymerized. On the other side, on a SC1-untreated SAM pattern, PEDOT array was very poorly polymerized. It strongly suggests that the SC1 cleaning process effectively removes unwanted contaminants on SAM pattern, thereby resulting in very selective growth of PEDOT electrode pattern.

  • It has been known that small solid particles act as a stabilizer in pickering emulsion system. In this study, we successfully prepared stable pickering emulsion in n-hexylalcohol and water system with $TiO_2$ whose surface was treated by alkylsilane. The optimum condition to prepare pickering emulsion stabilized by $TiO_2$ particles was determined by amount of $TiO_2$ particles and ratio of water and oil phase. The type of pickering emulsion was dependent on wettability of particles for water and n-hexylalcohol. When the amount of $TiO_2$ particles increased up to 5.00 wt%, the stability of pickering emulsion was showed to be improved. The most stable pickering emulsion was prepared in the case of W/O type which has the ratio of oil and water phase (3 : 7). We tried to prepare porous $SiO_2-TiO_2$ composite pigments using a pickering emulsion as template at the optimal condition. Porous pigments were synthesized with Ludox HS-30 as an inorganic material by sol-gel process. The characteristics and shape of porous pigments were measured by optical microscope, SEM, BET, XRD and EDS.
