  • The 2-amino-l-phenylpropanols 4∼7 were reacted with isothiocyanates to afford the 20 thioureido MAPP derivatives 8a∼11e, which were tested their cytotoxic activity by MTT assay. The cytotoxicity of alkylthioureido compounds were increased and decreased by alkyl chain length from $C_{8}$ to $C_{14}$ and of phenylthioureido compounds showed poor activity. The compounds (8b, 8c, 9b, 9c, l0b, 10c, 11b, 11c) with $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$ alkyl chains gave stronger activity than reference compound B13. The $IC_{50}$/ of compound 8c was 1.05$\mu$M and 3 times stronger activity than B13. The stereochemistry of synthesized compounds affected very little to cytotoxic activity.

  • Adsorption of 1,3-propanedithiol, 1,4-butanedithiol, 1,5-pentanedithiol, and 1,6-hexanedithiol on silver surface has been investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. It has been found that the conformations of the adsorbates were mainly affected by steric interaction of the adsorbates with the surface. As the alkyl chain length separating the thiol groups increased, surface stacking efficiency became increasingly important in determining conformation of the adsorbate on the surface.

  • The detergencies of these new functional anionic surfactants, sodium monoglycerol ${\alpha}$-sulfonated alkanoates, were investigated and compared with those of two commercial surfactants, that is, sodium ${\alpha}$-sulfonated alkanoic acid methyl ester and sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate. According to the variation of the hydrophobic alkyl chain length, the order of detergency was shown to be $C_{16}$>$C_{18}$>$C_{14}$>$C_{12}$. From the comparision experiment for the detergency and the various fundamental properties of two other surfactants, it was found that sodium monoglycerol ${\alpha}$-sulfonated hexadecanonate has the most outstanding characteristics of detergency. Possibly this result shows light on its industrial application as a nonpolluting detergent.

  • We have investigated the dielectric characteristics of palmitic acid(PA), stearic acid (SA) and arachidic acid(AA) Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films because these fatty acid systems have a same hydrophilic group and a different hydrophobic one (alkyl chain length). In this work. fatty acid systems were used as LB films and the status of the deposited films was confirmed by evaluating the transfer ratio. the UV absorption and the capacitance. Also, the dielectric characteristics such as the frequency-capacitance characteristics and the dielectric dispersion and absorption characteristics of PA, SA and AA through-plane were measured. The relative dielectric constants of PA, SA and AA LB films were about $2.6\sim4.6$, $2.4\sim4.1$ and $2.2\sim3.8$, respectively. That is, the relative dielectric constants were decreased in proportion to the chain length of methylene group. And, the dielectric dispersion and absorption of each fatty acid LB films have arisen from spontaneous polarization of dipole polarization in the range of $10^4\sim10^5[Hz]$.

  • Fragmentations and ion-molecule reactions of ionized cyclohexane propionic acid and cyclohexane butyric acid were studied using FTMS and theoretical calculations. The difference in bond dissociation depending on the aliphatic chain length was investigated and mechanisms for the possible rearrangements depending on the aliphatic carbon length were suggested. The most abundant fragment ion of the ionized cyclohexane propionic acid was c-$C_6H_{11}CH_2\;^+$ formed from the molecular ion by the direct C-C bond cleavage, while that of the ionized cyclohexane butyric acid was c-$C_6H_9C(OH)=OH^+$ formed by rearrangement of the molecular ion from the acid to diol form and loss of propyl radical. Stabilities of the radical and distonic ions of $C_nH_{2n}O^{+\bullet}$ formed from the molecular ion were compared. Protonated molecules were dissociated into smaller ions by losing one or two water molecules. The $[nM + H]^+$, $[nM + H - H_2O]^+$, and $[nM + H - 2H_2O]^+$ with n = 2 and 3 were generated by solvation with the neutral molecules in the ICR cell at long ion trapping time.

  • Effects of continuous oil phase on silver halide nanoparticles were investigated where nanoparticles were prepared using two different types of water-in-oil(W/O) microemulsions containing silver and halide, respectively. Phase behavior experiments for ternary systems containing AOT surfactant, hydrocarbon oil and aqueous solution of an inorganic salt showed that the region of one phase W/O microemulsion was found to be broadened with an increase in the alkyl chain length of a hydrocarbon mainly due to an increase in hydrophilic nature of a surfactant. With the information of phase behavior experiments, silver halide nanoparticles were prepared using different AOT-based microemulsion systems and photomicrographs obtained by transmission electron microscopy indicated that about 10 nm size particles of relatively spherical shape were obtained. It has been found that an increase in alkyl chain length of a hydrocarbon results in a decrease in particle size because of higher intermicellar exchange rate among microemulsion drops. The average particle size was also found to increase with the inorganic salt composition of initial aqueous solution.

  • Five novel amphoteric surfactants of N-acyloxyethylcarboxybetaine series were synthesized via Schotten-Baumman reaction between five acid chlorides containing 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 carbon atoms in their N-alkyl groups and dimethylaminoethanol to give the intermediate products, 2-dimethylaminoethylalkanoates(2). Quaternization of these products(2) was permitted to from 2-(acyloxyethyldimethylammonic)- acetates(3), whose structures were identified by elemental analysis, IR spectrophotometry and $^1Hnmr$ spectrometry. The yield of the final products was shown in the range of 77-80% based on the intermediate products. The surface tension of the aqueous solution of (3) was measured, and the critical micelle concentrations (cmc) were shown in the range of $2.1\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;-\;3.3\;{\times}\;10^{-4}mol/l$, and the surface tension at cmc was 28-36 dyne/cm. Cmc was lowered gradually by the increment of the length of N-alkyl ester containing group. The isoelectric point was shown in the range of 4.44-5.20. It showed a tendency to lean toward the acidic site and its range was broadened as increase of the hydrophobic group length. A linear relationship between log cmc and the number of carbon atoms(N) in the hydrophobic alkyl chain was shown in the relative equation of log cmc=-1.75-0.1N, and the contribution rate of N on the standard free energy change in micellization, ${\bigtriangleup}({\bigtriangleup}G^{\circ}m)/{\bigtriangleup}N$, was calculated as -0.23 RT.

  • The salting in and salting out of Octoxynol, N.F., a nonionic polyoxyethylated surfactant by n-alkylamine hydrochlorides ws investigated by measuring their effect on the cloud point of the surfactant at various salt concentrations. The carbon number of the alkyl chain was varied from zero to twelve. Ammonium chloride, methylamine hydrochloride and ethylamine hydrochloride tended to salt out the surfactant, lowering its cloud point in proportion to the salt concentration. n-Ankylamine and n-butylamine hydrochlorides showed salting-out effect at low concentrations of the electrolyte, while their effects were leveled off and showed rather salting-in trend at higher concentrations of the electrolyte. These salting-in effect was ascribed to the formation of a hydrotropy of the n-alky lammonium cations with the surfactant. The higher homolog compounds of n-alkylamine hydrochlorides showed extraordinarily high salting-in effect at very low oncentrations of the electrolyte. These large salting-in effects were more drastic as the chain length was getting longer. These large increases of the cloud point of the surfactant were attributed to the formation of mixed micelles of n-alkylammonium cations with the polyoxyethylated surfactant.

  • The reparation and characterization of cellulose esters LB films with various alkyl chain lengths were studied. Monolayers of cellulose triesters with medium chain length such as trioctanoate(C-8), tridecanoate(C-10), and tridodecanoate(C-12), exhibited a characteristic phase transition from expanded to condensed states. The mechanism of phase transition was discussed on the basis of the temperature dependence of the surface $pressure-area(\pi-A)$ isotherms. By the horizontal dipping method, X-type multilayers of cellulose esters were prepared and characterized using the contact angle and XPS spectra.
