We carried out the effect verification of conservation treatment focusing on basement rock of alkali granite at the Yukjonbul (two-pairs of Buddha Triads) carved on rock cliff of Samneung valley in Namsan mountain of Gyeongju. The conservation treatments were used to ethylsilicate-type rock consolidant and epoxy-type resin. It is treatment method that the epoxy-type resin have been applied one time into the exfoliation area, after rock consolidation treatment have been worked for three times. As the result of measuring ultrasonic velocity, P-wave velocity of the exfoliation area was relatively increased after applied the conservation treatments. The ultrasonic velocity of all area was increased as 27.8%. This result has been proved with consolidation effects by consolidant and filler for stone cultural heritages. The treatment method should be worked about three time to consolidate sufficiently for rocks.
We studied the characteristics and the growth mechanism of surface cracks from the Naksansa seven-storied stone pagoda(Treasure No. 499). The pagoda is composed of both medium-grained, porphyritic biotite granite and hornblende-biotite granite. Alkali feldspar megacrysts are easily found as phenocrysts in the rocks. Surface cracks intensely developed at the lower part of the stone pagoda, and their directions are of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. The rocks of the pagoda have intrinsic microcracks which can be defined as rift and grain rock cleavages. Both rock cleavages seems likely to have led to the crack growth and consequently to the mechanical deterioration of the pagoda. The vertical cracks developed parallel to the vertical compressive stress, whereas horizontal ones formed by tensile strength normal to the vertical compression. In addition mineral cleavages and twin planes of alkali feldspar phenocrysts seems to have been closely related to the mechanical breakdown of the rocks in the NE part of the pagoda.
Asian dust (Hwangsa) deposited on the surface of the Korean Peninsula is difficult to recognize their existence in mountainous terrain undergoing active erosion and weathering. This study examined Asian dust sediments mixed in soils by analysing clay mineralogy, mineral composition, and microtextures of fine silt (< 20 ㎛) in the alkali feldspar granite area of Seoraksan. The fine silt was composed of detrital particles derived from bedrocks, Asian dust sediments, and their weathering products. Clay minerals of 2:1 structural type, chlorite, amphibole, epidote, and Ca-bearing plagioclase were identified as eolian mineral particles. During the weathering of the bedrock composed of quartz and alkali feldspars, albite was partially weathered to produce small amounts of gibbsite and kaolin minerals. Hydroxy-Al interlayered clay minerals were formed by the exchange and fixation of polynuclear Al cationic species into the interlayers of expandable 2:1 clay minerals dominated by illite-smectite series clay minerals. Contribution of Asian dust to the fine silt of soils was estimated around 70% on the basis of total contents of 2:1 phyllosilicates.
Phenocrysts with rapakivi texture are easily observed in Bangeojin granite. The rapakivi texture is composed of inner pinkish alkali feldspars and white-colored mantling plagioclase. The Bangeojin granite distinctively includes lots of mafic microgranular enclaves and can be divided into five rock facies: (1) enclave-poor granite (EPG); (2) enclave-rich granite (ERG); (3) mafic microgranular enclave (MME); (4) hybrid zone between mafic microgranular enclave and granite (HZ); (5) hybrid zone-like enclaves (HLE). The rapakivi textures are observed in these five rock facies with no difference in shape and size. Plagioclase mantle commonly shows dendritic texture that is an important indicator to know the rapakivi genesis. The mantling texture would indicate supercooling condition during magma solidification process. In addition, mafic microgranular enclaves would imply the magma mingling environment. The magma mixing process had possibly caused the mantling texture. An abundance of rapakivi phenocrysts in HZ and the influxing phenomenon of the phenocrysts into MME support that there were physical chemical exchanges during the mingling. And this model of the magma mixing/mingling explain well the heterogeneous distribution of the rapakivi phenocrysts in the five rock facies. Therefore the rapakivi textures in the Bangeojin granite would have been formed by magma mixing process.
Division of granites in the Galmal-Yeonbug area, northern Gyeonggi, can be grey hornblende biotite granite (JHBG), biotite granite (JBG) and pink hornblende biotite granite (CHBG) by lithofacies. JHBG of small stock occurs as medium-grained with grey color and minute sphene. JBG occurs as medium-grained and light grey to grey in the north-east part of the area. The main study target CHBG covers in the north-southeast part of the area, and occurs medium-to coarse-grained with pink color. CHBG shows partly minute miaroles, and pegmatitic pocket with druse texture. From the mineral age data (K-Ar method). JHBG and JBG and CHBG are the igneous activity products of Daebo orogeny with different Jurassic and Bulgugsa disturbance of Cretaceous, respectively. And the age data also agree with geologic occurrences and interpretations of the granites in the field. CHBG consists of quartz, plagioclase, alkali-feldspar, biotite, hornblende, allanite, apatite, zircon, some calcite and opaques. Among them, alkalifeldspar and calcite occur characteristically in mostly perthitic othoclase and secondary filling of minutely miarolitic cavity, respectively. In modal analysis and QAP diagram, CHBG plots in granite field, and especially boundary of monzo-and syeno-granite fields. From the major oxide variations, molar A/CNK, $SiO_{2}\;vs\;K_{2}O$, AMF and so on, CHBG belongs to the acidic, peraluminous and high-K calc-alkaline, and was late differentiation product of single granitic magma. Barium and strontium have also dominantly differentiation trend, and in CaO vs Sr and $K_{2}O$ vs Sr, Sr was more participitated in the fractionation of plagioclase than that of alkali-feldspar. Normalized REE concentrations to chondrite value have parallel and gradual LREE enrichment and HREE depletion patterns, and weak Eu negative anomalies and narrow ranges of normalized Eu can suggest that plagioclase fractionations occurred mildly in the whole CHBG.
The Cretaceous Palgongsan granite is a typical, calc-alkaline, subsolvus monzogranite and shows characteristics of "I-type" granite by mineralogy and chemical composition. Many of the major and trace element characteristics of the Palgongsan granite are consistent with a relationship by fractional crystallisation to form a chemically zoned pattern. The granite show light REE enrichment with (Ce/Yb)N ratios of 5.78-9.50. All the REE patterns show Eu negative anomalies which become larger from the margin ($Eu/Eu^*=0.75$) to the core ($Eu/Eu^*=0.24$) of the pluton, mainly due to feldspar fractionation. Mineral geochemistry (alkali-feldspar, plagioclase & biotite) studies also show the zonal structure of the Palgongsan granite. The two-feldspar geothermometer shows that the temperature difference between the margin and the core part of the pluton is about $200^{\circ}C$ at various assumed pressures.
Honam Shear Zone is a mylonite zone approximately parallel to the NE-SW trend located southern part of Korea peninsula. Geologic ages and petrogenesis of foliated granites in this zone are as follows: Igneous rocks of this zone are composed of granite gneiss, Paleozoic granites, Songrim granites, Jurassic granites and Cretaceous granites. Foliated granites show deformed phase of Paleozoic and Songrim granites during Daebo Orogeny. And isotopic ages obtained from foliated granites are early Permian to late Triassic period (276~200 Ma). Most of foliated granite masses are igneous complex consisting of a series of differential product of cogenetic magma. The individual rock mass of foliated granites plotted on Harker diagram shows mostly similar trend of calc-alkali series. REE diagram indicates that LREE amount of foliated granites are more enriched than HREE and negative Eu anomalies of them are weaker than those of the other granites. From these data, we suggest the rocks are generated from continental margin under syntectonic environment. Original magma type of foliated granites correspond to I-type, syn-collision type and Hercyano type. In compressive stress field between Ogcheon folded belt and Youngnam massif, foliated granites had formed due to mylonitic deformation. Those facts indicate that magma of foliated granites would had been generated by melting in lower crust or contamination in upper mantle.
This study demonstrates the consolidation effect of ethylsilicate consolidants considering material characteristics and weathering degree of Samneunggyeseongakyukjonbul(rock-carved Yukjonbul Buddha in Samneung Valley) in Namsan, Gyeongju. The buddha statue is composed of alkali feldspar granite and contains numerous sets of joint with exfoliation and granular disintegration, therefore the statue is necessary to be treated for surface strength. The laboratory and in-situ tests of consolidation effect showed more increase of ultrasonic velocity that KSE 300, a relatively highly concentrated consolidant, performed more increase of ultrasonic velocity and decrease of porosity than others after treatments in weathered granite. And the consolidated rock with OH 100 was more resistant to salt weathering. For the buddha statues, KSE 300 is more applicable to enhance surface strength because it showed higher consolidation effect for long term than OH 100 and the statues has not been weathered by salts.
The Cretaceous metal ore deposits in the Gyeongsang basin of Gyeongsangbuk-do are characterized by the formation of metallogenic provinces which show zonal distribution pattern around Yeonil province where pneumatolytic type is dominated and hydrothermal type are distributed in the order of decreasing temperature type outward. Some Cretaceous granitic rocks include zoned alkali feldspars which reflect rapid variation of $H_2O$ during emplacement and crystallization of the water-saturated granitic magma. The ore deposits are considered to be originated from upward transportation of ore solution from the excess of water exhausted from uprising magma, which seems to be intimately related to the fact that the majority of the ore deposits in Daegu area are cummulated around the granites including zoned alkali feldspars. In order to collect geochemical data necessary for geochemical exploration in the study area, certain trace elements were chosen as pathfinders from monzonite and soil in the vicinity of Dalsung Tungsten Mine by studying the dispersion patterns of trace elements: Ba and Sr show trends to decrease toward ore deposit while Cu, Pb, and Mo increase. Around mining area there are distributed apparently Equisetum arvense Linne and Mentha sachinensis Kudo which may be used as index plants. In the viewpoint of geologic structure, the trends of the ore veins in contact aureole around the Palgongsan granite body correspond with the pre- and syn- plutonism joint pattern in hornfels in the area.
Igneolls rocks of the Hamyang area consist of Hamyang foliated granites and hornblende diorite. Hamyang foliated granites are classified into four rock types in terms of mineral composition and texture. The four rock types are foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, foliated porphrytic granodiorite, foliated fine biotite granodiorite and foliated leuco granite. Petrochemical data of these rocks suggest that Hamyang foliated granites is calc-alkali rock series of differentiated products of cogenetic magma by fractional crystallization. Igneous rocks of studied area correspond to I-type, peraluminous and calc alkali rock series. Rb-Sr age and $Sr^{87}/Sr^{86}$ initial ratio for foliated prophrytic granodiorite is $200{\pm}Ma$and $0.711{\pm}0.0037$, respectively. K-Ar(hornblende) age of hornblende diorite is $179{\pm}9Ma$. These data come to an coincidence with Igneous activity of South Korea which were proposed by O.J. Kim(1975), that is, they correspond to Hamyang foliated granites of products of Songrim Disturbance, and to hornblende diorite of Daebo Orogeny.
