HDBPDA ion exchange resin, {(4, 5) : (13, 14)-Dibenzo-6, 9, 12-trioxa-3, 15, 21, -triazabicyclo [15. 3. 1]heneicosa-(1, 17, 19)(18, 20, 21) triene ion exchange resin : HDBPDA ion exchange resin} had a capacity of 3.8meq/g dry resin. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions on HDBPDA and strongly acidic cation exchange resin, Dowex 50W-X8(200-400mesh) in water, and the various concentrations of hydrochloric acid were determined. Concentration of hydrochloric acid have almost not influenced on the distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions for the HDBPDA ion exchange resin, but generally the distribution coefficient slightly increased with decreasing concentration of hydrochloric acid. The distribution coefficients of metal ions in water are larger than those in various hydrochloric acid concentration. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions for the Dowex 50W-X8 ion exchange resin increased with decreasing hydrochloric acid concentration. Especially, the distribution coefficients of alkaline earth metal ions increased rapidly compared to those for alkali metal ions. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions on HDBPDA ion exchange resin increased in a linear manner with decreasing acid concentration, and the slope, d log Kd/d log $M_{HCl}$ is about -0.2. Of the distribution cofficients of alkali metal ions on Dowex 50W-X8, at range of moderate hydrochloric acid concentration, the slope is about -1, while the slope for alkaline earth metal ions is about -2. However, at very low hydrochloric acid concentration, the linear variation between distribution coefficient and acid concentration was not occurred, but the slope was deviated from above values at low acid concentration.
A highly purified $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ from the rectal gland of Squalus acanthias and from the electric organ of Electrophorus electricus has been used to raise antibodies in rabbits. The 97,000 dalton catalytic subunit and glycoprotein derived from the rectal gland of spiny shark were also used as antigens. The two $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ holoenzymes and the two shark subunits were antigenic. In Ouchterlony double diffusion experiments, these antibodies formed precipitation bands with their antigens. Antibodies prepared against the two subunits of shark holoenzyme also formed precipitation bands with their antigens and shark holoenzyme, but not with eel holoenzyme. These observations are in good agreement with inhibitory effect of these antibodies on the catalytic activity of $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ both from the shark and the eel, since there is very little cross-reaction between the shark anticatalytic subunit antibodies and the eel holoenzyme. The maximum antibodies titer of the anticatalytic subunit antibodies is found to be 6 weeks after the initial single exposure to this antigen. Multiple injections of the antigen increased the antibody titer. However, the time required to produce the maximum antibody titer was approximately the same. These antibodies also inhibit catalytic activity of $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ vesicles reconstituted by a slow dialysis of cholate after solubilization of the enzyme in a presonicated mixture of cholate and phospholipid. In these reconstituted $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ vesicles, effects of these antibodies on the fluxes of $Na^+$, $Rb^+$, and $K^+$ were investigated. Control or preimmune serum had no effect on the influx of $^{22}Na^+$ or the efflux of $^{86}Rb^+$. Immunized sera against the shark $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ holoenzyme, its glycoprotein or catalytic subunit did inhibit the influx of $^{22}Na^+$ and the efflux of $^{86}Rb^+$. It was also demonstrated that these antibodies inhibit the coupled counter-transport of $Na^+$ and $K^+$ as studied by means of dual labeling experiments. However, this inhibitory effect of the antibodies on transport of ions in the $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ vesicles is manifested only on the portion of energy and temperature dependent alkali metal fluxes, not on the portion of ATP and ouabain insensitive ion movement. Simultaneous determination of effects of the antibodies on ion fluxes and vesicular catalytic activity indicates that an inhibition of active ion transport in reconstituted $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ vesicles appears to be due to the inhibitory action of the antibodies on the enzymatic activity of $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ molecules incorporated in the vesicles. These findings that the inhibitory effects of the antibodies specific to $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ or to its subunits on ATP and temperature sensitive monovalent cation transport in parallel with the inhibitory effect of vesicular catalytic activity by these antibodies provide direct evidence that $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ is the molecular machinery of active cation transport in this reconstituted $(Na^+,\;K^+)-ATPase$ vesicular system.
Azacrownoalkyl phenylphosphinic acids were synthesized and their competitive solvent extraction characteristics from water to chloroform layer were investigated. Phosphinic acids were synthesized in good yields by one step reaction of phenylphosphinate, aldehyde, and monoazacrown ether and then basic hydrolysis of the resulting phosphinate dsters. These complexing agents revealed a wide effective pH range in extraction of alkali metal ions from water to the organic phase and total metal ion loading at pH 11 was about 75%. The selectivity of the cation extraction was determined mainly by the cavity size of the azacrown ethers, showing $Na^+$ >> $K^+$ > $Rb^+$ > $Li^+$ > $Cs^+$ for the alkyl phenylphosphinic acid ${\underline{2}}$, containing monoaza-15-crown-5 and $K^+$ >> $Rb^+$ > $Na^+$ > $Cs^+$ > $Li^+$ for the alkyl phenylphosphinic acid, ${\underline{3}}$, containing monoaza-18-crown-6 moiety. Applicable pH range of these azacrown ether phosphinic acids in solvent extraction of alkali metal cations was wider than a crownether carboxylic acid with similar selectivity, showing considerable amount of metal ion loading in slightly acidic or neutral media.

Silicon (Si) is the second most abundant element in the crust and consists of three stable isotopes, 28Si (92.23%), 29Si (4.67%), and 30Si (3.10%). Si isotopes are widely studied worldwide as a proxy for the biogeochemical cycle of Si to reconstruct the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate. However, in Korea, there have been no studies on biogenic silica using Si isotopes. In this study, we carried out Si isotope measurements of giant diatoms, summarizing the previously reported alkali fusion methods and establishing the best Si separation method for biogenic silica. Samples were completely digested using alkali fusion at high temperatures, effectively separating Si using an AG® 50W-X8 cation exchange resin. To evaluate the precision and accuracy of our measurements, Si isotope standard material (NBS-28) and USGS reference materials (AGV-2, GSP-2, BHVO-2) were analyzed. The results are in excellent agreement with the reported values within the acceptable error. The Si isotope measurement method developed in this study is expected to help in understanding the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment by tracing the Si cycle.
To genetically breed powerful multifunctional antagonistic bacteria, the urease gene of alkalophilic Bacillus pasteurii was transferred into Bacillus subtilis YB-70 which had been selected as a powerful biocontrol agent against root-rotting fungus Fusarium solani. Urease gene was inserted into the HindIII site of pGB215-110 and designated pGU266. The plasmid pGU266 containing urease gene was introduced into the B. subtilis YB-70 by alkali cation transformation system and the urease gene was very stably expressed in the transformant of B. subtilis YB-70(pGU266). The optimal conditions for the transfomation were also evaluated. From the in vitro antibiosis tests against F. solani, the antifungal activity of B. subtilis YB-70 containing urease gene was much efficient than that of the non-transformed strain. Genetic improvement of B. subtilis YB-70 by transfer of urease gene for the efficient control seemed to be responsible for enhanced plant growth and biocontrol efficacy by combining its astibiotic action and ammonia producing ability.

Though the recycling rate of coal fly ash generated from domestic thermoelectric power plants is gradually increased, at present, the most amount of coal bottom ash is disposed by a landfill instead of recycling. Therefore, to reuse a coal bottom ash as high-value materials the synthesis of zeolite made from a coal bottom ash was investigated in this study. NaPl, hydroxy-sodalite and tobermorite were produced through the alkaline hydrothermal reaction of pulvelized bottom ash at various temperatures; 80, 120, $150^{\circ}C$, and the concentration of NaOH at the range from 1 to 5 M. Especially, NaPl with excellent cation exchange capability had a high crystallinity at ${\leq}2$ M NaOH and ${\leq}120^{\circ}C$.
The electrical resistivity of the ceramic glaze coated on ceramic substrate plays an important role on the characteristics of the thick and thin film electrical circuits. In this study the effects of the various modifiers on the electrical resistivity were examined in SiO2-Al2O3-B2O3-RO-Na2O (RO=CaO , SrO, BaO, PbO) glass system. In alkali free glasses where divalent cations are responsible for electrical conduction the electrical conductivity of th glasses increased with the ionic size of divalent cations due to the decrease in the bond strength between oxyben and divalent cation. In Na2O containing glasses however where Na+ ion is responsible for electrical conduction the ionic conductivity decreased with the ionic size of divalent cations because the blocking effect of the cations on Na+ ion movement increased with larger divalent cations. Na+ ionic conduction also depended on the glass structure relaxation due to the corrdination number changes of B2O3 and Al2O3 which varied with the NaO2 content in the glass.
The anthocyanins in Santa rosa plum (widely growing var. in Korea) were extracted with 0.5% methanolic HCl and purified with Amberlite IRC-50 cation exchange resin. The individual pigments were separated by paper chromatography. The two pigments were identified as cyanidin-3-monoglucoside and cyanidin-3-xyloglucoside based on the following evidence: Rf values in various solvents, partical acid hydrolysis, stepwise hydrolysis, sugar moiety, alkaline degradation, and absorption spectra in the visible region. Cyanicin-3-monoglucoside was the abundant pigment of the plum.
The complex formation between diazocalix[4]dipropyl (1) and diazocalix[4]crown-6 ether (2) with alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions was investigated by voltammetry. Electrochemical properties of compounds 1 and 2 and their selectivity toward metal ions were evaluated in $CH_3CN$ solution by comparison of voltammetric behaviors of two phenols in each compound. Compounds 1 and 2 showed almost same voltammetric behavior which is two irreversible oxidation peaks caused by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between two phenols in 1 and 2. While, however, upon interacting with various metal ions, 1 with two propyl ether groups showed no significant changes in voltammetry, 2 with crown ether group caused significant voltammetric changes upon the addition of $Ba^{2+}$ to 2. Their behavior is closely related to the complex formation by entrapment of metal ion into crown ether cavity, and ion-dipole interaction between metal ion and two phenolic groups in calix[4]crown-6.
Complexation of ortho-xylyl-17-crown-5 (X17C5) with alkali metal ions in acetonitrile was studied by 7Li and 23Na NMR spectroscopy. The complex formation constants of X17C5 with LiI, LiSCN, NaI, and NaSCN were determined by investigating the changes in the chemical shifts as a function of the concentration ratio of X17C5 to metal ion. It was found that X17C5 forms 1:1 complex with Li+ and Na+ ions and the log Kf's for the complexation with LiI, LiSCN, NaI, and NaSCN were determined to be 2.88, 2.43, 2.53, and 2.30, respectively. In particular, the kinetics of complexation of X17C5 with Na+ was investigated by the method of 23Na NMR lineshape analysis. Activation energies were determined from Arrhenius plot of the resultant rate constant data to be 25.4 kJ/mol for NaI and 15.1 kJ/mol for NaSCN. Other kinetic parameters were also calculated by employing the Eyring equation. The decomplexation rates measured were 1.82 × 104 M-1s-1 for NaI and 1.50 × 104 M-1s-1 for NaSCN. It is concluded that the decomplexation mechanism is predominantly a bimolecular cation exchange for both cases.
