We investigated geochemical characteristics of the Dodong Basaltic Rocks in the lower part of the Ulleung Island. They have lithological range of alkali basalt to trachybasalt, belonging to Na and K subseries of alkaline series. They mostly fall within the field of alkalline within-plate basalts on tectonic discrimination diagrams, and then plot in the field of oceanic island basalt (OIB). Geochemically, extension of lithospheric mantle and asthenospheric upwelling after East Sea under an Cenozoic extensional tectonic setting might be a heat source for partial melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle, which might generate the basaltic magma. But we cannot exclude that mantle plume might also be a heat source for melting of the lithospheric mantle.
Phlogopite and kaersutite, showing distinctively different textural characteristics compared to the common phenocrysts, are observed in alkali basalt from Jeju Island. They occur as large crystals (2-10 mm) in host basalts, whereas fine-grained phlogopite and kaersutite occur in ultramafic mantle xenoliths and mafic gabbroic xenoliths, respectively, as an interstitial and microvein phases, or in corona textures (<1 mm). This textural characteristics of fine-grained grains clearly indicates secondary in origin. Phlogopite contains high $TiO_2$(4.1-6.9 wt%) and F(2.8-4.6 wt%) and relatively high mg#[=100Mg/(Mg+$Fe^t$) in mols, where $Fe^t$ is total iron](88-80), whereas kaersutite has high $TiO_2$(5.6-6.11 wt%) and much lower mg#s(68-64). Our textural observations and the geochemical character of these hydrous minerals suggest that they were unrelated to each other and mica formation happened early in the upper mantle before the mantle xenoliths had been trapped. In contrast, kaersutite formation has happened later, probably during the late stage of crystallization as intracrustal processes. The presence of phlogopite and kaersutitic amphibole is a direct evidence for K-, Ti-, F- and $H_2O$-bearing fluid/melt percolation in the lithosphere beneath Jeju Island, indicating that they are product of interaction between host rock/peridotite/fluid-melt. Thus, the upper mantle/lower crust beneath Jeju Island are metasomatized to various extents, characterized by a change in major metasomatic hydrous minerals from phlogopite to amphibole with decreasing depth.
The Paekrogdam summit crater area, Mt. Halla, Jeju Island, Korea, composed of Paekrogdam trachyte, Paekrogdam trachybasalt, and Manseidongsan conglomerate in ascending order. Joint systems show concentric and radial patterns around the summit crate wall. The Paekrogdam crater is a summit crater lake which erupted the tuffs, scorias and lava flows of Paekrogdam trachybasalt after the emplaceent of Paekrogdam trachyte dome. SiO$_2$ contents of mafic and felsic lavas are respectively, 48.0∼53.7 wt.% and 60.7∼67.4 wt.%, reflecting bimodal volcanism. And lavas with SiO$_2$ between 53.7 wt.% and 60.7 wt.% are not found. According to TAS diagram and K$_2$O-Na$_2$O diagram, the volcanic rocks belong to the normal alkaline rock series of alkali basalt-trachybasalt-basaltic trachyandesite and trachyte association. Oxide vs. MgO diagrams represent that the mafic lavas fractionated with crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, magnetite and ilmenite and felsic trachyte of plagioclase and apatite. The characteristics of trace elements and REEs shows that primary magma for the trachybasalt magma would have been derived from partial melting of garnet peridotite mantle. In the discrimination diagrams, the volcanic rocks are plotted at the region of within plate basalt (WPB).
Geopolymers are an important alternative material supporting recycling, sustainability, and waste management. Durability properties are among the most critical parameters to be investigated; in this study, the durability of manufactured geopolymer samples under the attack of 10% magnesium sulfate and 10% sodium sulfate solution was investigated. 180 cycles of freezing and thawing were also tested. The experimentally obtained results investigate the durability of geopolymer mortar prepared with fly ash (class F) and alkali activator. Three different quarry dust wastes replaced the river sand aggregate: limestone, marble, and basalt powder as fine filler aggregate in three different replacement ratios of 25%, 50%, and 75% to produce ten series of geopolymer composites. The geopolymer samples' visual appearance, weight changes, UPV, and strength properties were studied for up to 12 months at different time intervals of exposure to sulfate solutions to investigate sulfate resistance. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), EDS, and XRD were used to study the microstructure of the samples. It was beneficial to include quarry waste as a filler aggregate in durability and mechanical properties. The compact matrix was demonstrated by microstructural analysis of the manufactured specimens. The geopolymer mortars immersed in sodium sulfate showed less strength reduction and deterioration than magnesium sulfate, indicating that magnesium sulfate is more aggressive than sodium sulfate. Therefore, it is concluded that using waste dust interrogation with partial replacement of river sand with fly ash-based geopolymers has satisfactory results in terms of durability properties of freeze-thaw and sulfate resistance.

This paper reports the results about the petrography and mineral chemistry of 13 representative dredged basaltic rocks from the western Caroline Ridge (WCR) and Yap Trench-Arc system, and provides the chemical and tectonic informations based on the compositions of clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Compositions of olivine phenocrysts in some analyzed samples are Fo$_{86-80}$. Plagioclase phenocrysts have variable compositions ranging from An$_{90}$ to An$_{55}$. The compositions of clinopyroxene phenocrysts vary according to geological environments; titansalite in atoll and guyot of WCR, diopside-augite in trough and bank of WCR, and endiopside in Yap Trench-Arc system. Application of the discrimination schemes proposed by Leterrier et al. (1982) suggests: (1) the samples from atoll-guyot belong to within plate alkali basalt, implying that western CR could be the continuation of eastern CR formed by hot spot magmatism, (2) the samples from the Yap Trench-Arc system with no present-day magmatism clearly indicate the occurrence of orogenic tholeiites presumably related to early island arc magmatisms in this area, however, (3) the samples from the bank and trough do not provide definitive informations, which might indicate the complexity of their origins.

There is increasingly more research focusing on the application of FRP reinforcing bars as an alternative material for steel reinforcing bars, but most such research look at short term behavior of FRP reinforced structures. In this study, the microscopic analysis and tensile behavior of Basalt and Glass FRP bars under freezing-thawing and alkaline conditions were experimentally evaluated. After 100 cycles of the freezing and thawing, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of FRP bars decreased by about 5%. In the case of microstructure of FRP bars during the initial 20 days, no significant damages of FRP bar sections were found under $20^{\circ}C$ alkaline solution; however, the specimens immersed in $60^{\circ}C$ alkaline solution were found to experience resin dissolution, fiber damage and the separation of the resin-fiber interface. In the alkaline environment, the strength decrease of about 10% occurred in the environment at $20^{\circ}C$ for 100 days, but the tensile strength of FRPs exposed for 500 days decreased by 50%. At temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, an abrupt decrease in the strength was observed at 50 and 100 days. Especially, the tensile strength decrease of Basalt fiber Reinforced Polymer bars showed more severe degradation due to the damage caused by dissolution of resin matrix and fiber swelling in alkaline solution. Therefore, in order to improve the long-term performance of the surface braided FRPr reinforcing bars, surface treatment is required to ensure alkali resistance.

The Yeongdong basin is one of the pull-apart basins in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula that has developed during Cretaceous sinistal fault movement. The bimodal igneous activities (basalts and rhyolites) in the basin appear to be closely associated with the basin development. Here, we discuss the origin of the igneous rocks using chemical and radiogenic isotope data. Basaltic (48.4-52.7 wt% SiO$_2$) and rhyolitic (70.3-70.8 wt% SiO$_2$) rocks are slightly alkalic in a total alkali-silica diagram. The rhyolitic rocks with have unusually high K$_2$O contents (5.2-6.0 wt%). The basaltic rocks show an overall pattern of within-plate basalt in a MORB-normalized spider diagram, but have distinct negative anomaly of Nb, which indicates a significant amount of crustal component in the magma. The basaltic rocks plot within the calc-alkaline basalt field in the Hf/3-Th-Ta and Y/l5-La/10-Nb/8 discrimination diagrams. The eNd(T) values of the basaltic rocks (-13.6 to 14.3) are slightly higher than those of the rhyolitic rocks (-14.1 to 15.2), and the initial Sr isotopic ratios of the former (0.7085-0.7093) are much lower than those of the latter (0.7140-0.7149). However, the initial Nd and Sr isotope ratios of the igneous rocks in the Yeongdong basin are similar to those of the nearby Cretaceous igneous rocks in the Okcheon belt. The Pb isotope ratios plot within the field of Mesozoic granitoids outside of the Gyeongsang basin in Pb-Pb correlation diagrams. Since a basaltic magma requires the mantle source, the enriched isotopic signatures and negative Nb anomaly of the basaltic rocks suggest two possibilities for their origin: enriched mantle lithospheric source, or depleted mantle source with significant amount of crustal contamination. However, we prefer the first possibility since it would be difficult for a basaltic magma to maintain its bulk composition when it is significantly contaminated with granitic crustal material. The slightly more enriched isotopic signatures of rhyolitic rocks also suggest two possibilities: differentiate of the basaltlc magma with some crustal contamination, or direct partial melting of the lower crust. Much larger exposed volume of the rhyolitic rocks, compared with the basaltic rocks, indicates the latter possibility more favorable.
The volcanic rocks of Ulleungdo reveal very high alkali element abundances and most of them have high K20/Na20 ratios and belong to potassium-series. Ulleungdo volcanics show very wide range of variation in their composition from basalts to trachytic basalt, basaltic trachyandesite, trachyandesite, and finally to trachyte on total alkali-silica diagram. Such a general trend of compositional variation can be explained well by differentiation due to fractional crystallization of various minerals. Olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, ilmenite, and apatite are suggested as the major fractionated minerals. Ulleungdo volcanics show Nb/U and PbICe ratios similar to oceanic volcanics such as MORB and OIB, but significantly different .from volcanic rocks of island arc environments, which suggest that they are not directly related with subduction along the Japanese arc. LREE abundances of Ulleungdo volcanics are highly enriched compared with HREE abundances ((La)N=193-420, (L~)~=7.5-19.5).O nly trachyte-1 show appreciable negative Eu anomalies among various rock types, which suggests significant amount of plagioclase were fractionated. However, trachyte-2, trachyte-3, phonolite, and pumice reveal quite different variation trend of trace and rare earth element abundances from trachyte-1, which suggest that they have originated from different magma batches and have experienced different differentiation processes. A prominent bimodal distribution, thus lacking of intermediate composition, is observed from the Ulleundo volcanics.
Sr, Nd, Pb isotopic compositions of the Cenozoic basaltic rocks distributed in Pyeongtaek-Asan area display significantly enriched values compared with mid-ocean ridge basalts just like other Cenozoic basalts of Korea. The isotopic compositions of most of the Cenozoic basaltic rocks of Korea including those from Pyeongtaek-Asan area can be explained as mixing between enriched mantle component with relatively low $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$ ratios and depleted mantle component. In contrast, Jejudo basalts can be explained as mixing between enriched mantle component with realtively higher $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$ ratios and depleted mantle componsnt. Combined with that very similar division of enriched mantle components is applied to the Cenozoic basalts of northeast China and southeast China, it is suggested that subcontinental lithospheric mantle of central and southern parts of Korea represents eastern extension of North China Block and South China Block respectively. The indentation model for the late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic continental collision of China contradicts to such an interpretation, because it cannot explain occurrence of subcontinental lithospheric mantle component of South China Block-affinity under the Jejudo area. Instead, it is more probable that suture zone of the two continental blocks crosses between central and southern Korea and its location is further south from the Pyeongtaek-Asan area. Such distinct location compared with Imjingal belt, supposedly collisional boundary suggested before, suggests that mantle boundary may not be coincide with crustal boundary for the continental collision.
Our knowledge of the lithosphere beneath the Korean Peninsula has been improved through petrologic and geochemical studies of upper mantle xenoliths hosted by Quaternary intraplate alkali basalts from Jeju Island. The xenoliths are mostly spinel lherzolites, accompanied by subordinate harzburgite and pyroxenites. The mantle xenoliths represent residual mantle material showing textural and geochemical evidence for at least a three-stage evolution, fractional partial melting, recrystallization, and metasomatism. Their composition primarily controlled by early fractional melt extraction and porphyroclastic and mylonitic fabrics formed in a shear-dominated environment, which was subsequently modified by residual slab-derived fluids (or melts). Modal metasomatic products occur as both anhydrous phase(orthopyroxene) and hydrous phase (phlogopite). Late-stage orthopyroxene is more common than phlogopite. However, chemical equilibrium is evident between the primary and secondary orthopyroxene, implying that the duration of post-metasomatic high temperatures enabled complete resetting/reequilibration of the mineral compositions. The metasomatic enrichment pre-dates the host Jeju Quaternary magmatism, and a genetic relationship with the host magmas is considered unlikely. Following enrichment in the peridotite protolith in the mantle wedge, the upper mantle beneath proto-Jeju Island was transformed from a subarc environment to an intraplate environment. The Jeju peridotites, representing old subarc fragments, were subsequently transported to the surface, incorporated into ascending Quaternary intraplate alkali basalt. The result of this study implies that long term material transfer in the transformation of geotectonic setting from a subarc to intraplate may have played a significant role in the evolution of lithospheric mantle, resulting in the enriched mantle domains, such as EM I or EM II in the lithospheric mantle beneath East Asia.
