  • Alignment tolerance for EO/IR airborne camera using common optic is an important factor in stabilization accuracy and geo-pointing accuracy. Before airborne camera is mounted on the aircraft, defining alignment tolerance and verification of it is essential in production as well as research and development. In this paper we establish basic concept on the definition and elements of alignment tolerance for airborne camera and propose how to measure each of those elements. Components and the measurement sequence of alignment tolerance are as follows: 1) tolerance of alignment between EO and IR LOS. 2) tolerance of sensor alignment. 3) tolerance of position reporting accuracy. 4) tolerance of mount alignment

  • This study is focused on simulation-based dimensional tolerance optimization process (DTOP) to minimize vehicle pulls by reduction of dimensional variation in front suspension system. In previous studies, the effect of tires and wheel alignment sensitivity have mainly been investigated to eliminate vehicle pulls in nominal design condition without allocating optimal tolerance level for selected components, among various factors regarding vehicle pulls such as vehicle design parameters, vehicle weight balance, tires, and environmental factors. Unfortunately, there are wide variations in the real vehicle, and these have impacted actual vehicle pulls, especially wheel alignment effects from suspension geometry variation has not been considered in the previous studies. In the tolerance design of suspension, tolerance variables with the uncertainty such as parts dimensional variation, assembly process, datum position and direction, and assembly tool tolerance has a great influence on the variation of the suspension dimensional performances. This study introduces total vehicle pull prediction model in considering major key factors for vehicle pull sensitivity. The Monte Carlo-based tolerance analysis model using Taguchi robust method is developed to optimize dimensional tolerance parameters, satisfying on the target variation level.

  • In this paper, a study is conducted on the acceptable tolerance of an alignment device to reduce the optical loss caused by the alignment tolerance of a window hermetic optical connector. To increase the transmission distance of optical signals and fiber-optic communication systems, it is necessary to maintain and improve the high optical efficiency of the connectors used to bond optical fibers. In the case of the window hermetic optical connector, the optical system is aligned through an alignment device. At this time, since the two connectors are used together, each component is fixed, and further alignment is impossible. The alignment tolerance of the housing system and pin used to align the optical system of the connector causes optical loss, leading to serious problems in the fiber-optic communication system. Thus, to find the acceptable tolerance required for manufacturing the optical-connector alignment device, tolerance analysis is performed on the components of the optical connector, such as the ball lens and the window. We also implement single-mode and multimode optical-connector systems, respectively. Based on the results, we determine an acceptable tolerance value for the alignment device.

  • The errors can cause the serious loss of the performance of a precision machine system. In this paper, we proposed the method of allocating the alignment tolerances of the parts and applied this method to get the optimal tolerances of a Confocal Scanning Microscope. In general, tight tolerances are required to maintain the performance of a system, but a high cost of manufacturing and assembling is required to preserve the tight tolerances. The purpose of allocating the optimal tolerances is minimizing the cost while keeping the high performance of the system. In the optimal problem, we maximized the tolerances while maintaining the performance requirements. The Monte Carlo Method, a statistical simulation method, is used in tolerance analysis. Alignment tolerances of optical components of the confocal scanning microscope are optimized to minimize the cost and to maintain the observation performance of the microscope. We can also apply this method to the other precision machine system.

  • This paper will discuss the alignment techniques and measurement results of geostationary satellite communication antennas for correct antenna pointing and also the fixtures. To get the best performance in terms of antenna pointing and fixtures, zero G condition have been simulated and laser tracker and theodolite system have been applied. As a result, alignment stability was verified within the tolerance, ${\pm}\;0.25mm$ and ${\pm}\;0.013^{\circ}$ and finally Ka-band deployable antenna alignment has been accomplished within the tolerance, ${\pm}\;0.5mm$ and ${\pm}\;0.015^{\circ}$.

  • A measurement of spacecraft alignment is an important process of spacecraft assembly, integration and test because it is necessary that a ground station controls the precise positions of on-orbit spacecraft by using the alignment data of attitude orbit control sensors(AOCS) on spacecraft. In addition, accuracy of spacecraft alignment requirement is about $0.1^{\circ}$~$0.7^{\circ}$. The spacecraft alignment is measured by autocollimation of theodolite. This paper describes the measurement principle and method of spacecraft alignment. The result shows that all of the AOCS on the spacecraft are aligned within the tolerance required through the alignment measurement.

  • In this paper, a precision inspection technique using CAD/CAI integration is proposed for the parts having very thin and sharp 3 dimensional curve features. The technique begings with feature reconstruction of turbine blades which have 3 dimensional combined feometry, such as splines, and thin circles. The alifnment procedures consistsb of two phases-rough and fine phases : rough phase alignment is based on the conventional 6 point5s probing on the clear cut surfacef, and fine phase alignment is based on the intial measurement on the 3 dimensional curved parts using an lterative measurement feed-back least sequares technique for alignment. Forf the analysis of profile tolerance of parts, the actual measured points are obtained by finding the closet points on the CAD geometry by the developed subdivision technique and the Tschebycheff norm is applied based on iterative fashion, giving accurate profile tolerance value. The developed inspection technique is applied to practical procedures of blade manufacturing and demonstrated high performance.

  • Linear Astigmatism Free - Three Mirror System (LAF-TMS) is the linear astigmatism free off-axis wide field telescope with D = 150 mm, F/3.3, and $FOV=5.51^{\circ}{\times}4.13^{\circ}$. We report the design and analysis results of its mirrors and optomechanical structures. Tolerance allowance has been analyzed to the minimum mechanical tolerance of ${\pm}0.05mm$ that is reasonable tolerance for fabrication and optical alignment. The aluminum mirrors are designed with mounting flexure features for the strain-free mounting. From Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results of mounting torque and self-weight, we expect 33 - 80 nm RMS mirror surface deformations. Shims and the L-bracket are mounted between mirrors and the mirror mount for optical alignment. The mirror mount is designed with four light-weighted mechanical parts. It can stably and accurately fix mirrors, and it also suppresses some of stray light.

Tolerance Allocation Method for IR Optics Fabrication Using Monte-Carlo Simulation Based on Measured Reflective Eccentricity (편심측정 결과가 반영된 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 이용한 적외선 광학계 조립정렬 공차 할당 기법)

  • In this paper, a tolerance allocation method using Monte-Carlo simulation with measured reflective eccentricity for high-sensitive IR optics is proposed. During optics fabrication and alignment, reflective eccentricity was measured using an optical centration measurement instrument. A Monte-Carlo simulation was performed using measured eccentricity data, and it gives statistical estimated performance of the optics after fabrication. The validity of the proposed tolerance allocation method was verified comparing the estimated MTF result with the measured MTF result of the fabricated optics.
