Parasitism is a one-sided relationship between two organisms in which one benefits at the expense of the other. Parasitic dinoflagellates, particularly species of Amoebophrya, have long been thought to be a potential biological agent for controlling harmful algal bloom(HAB). Amoebophrya infections have been reported for over 40 species representing more than 24 dinoflagellate genera including a few toxic species. Parasitic dinoflagellates Amoebophrya spp. have a relatively simple life cycle consisting of an infective dispersal stage (dinospore), an intracellular growth stage(trophont), and an extracellular reproductive stage(vermiform). Biology of dinospores such as infectivity, survival, and ability to successfully infect host cells differs among dinoflagellate host-parasite systems. There are growing reports that Amoebophrya spp.(previously, collectively known as Amoebophrya ceratii) exhibit the strong host specificity and would be a species complex composed of several host-specific taxa, based on the marked differences in host-parasite biology, cross infection, and molecular genetic data. Dinoflagellates become reproductively incompetent and are eventually killed by the parasite once infected. During the infection cycle of the parasite, the infected host exhibits ecophysiologically different patterns from those of uninfected host in various ways. Photosynthetic performance in autotrophic dinoflagellates can be significantly altered following infection by parasitic dinoflagellate Amoebophrya, with the magnitude of the effects over the infection cycle of the parasite depending on the site of infection. Parasitism by the parasitic dinoflagellate Amoebophrya could have significant impacts on host behavior such as diel vertical migration. Parasitic dinoflagellates may not only stimulate rapid cycling of dissolved organic materials and/or trace metals but also would repackage the relatively large sized host biomass into a number of smaller dinospores, thereby leading to better retention of host's material and energy within the microbial loop. To better understand the roles of parasites in plankton ecology and harmful algal dynamics, further research on a variety of dinoflagellate host-parasite systems is needed.
Monthly distribution of marine bacteria and phytoplankton in Suyeong Bay were investigated with laboratory experiment of dominant algal species and bacterial flora. During the periods of study, the highest density of phytoplankton and bacteria occurred in May with the number of $3.3{\times}10^6cells/l$ and $1.93{\times}10^8cells/ml$, respectively. 10 genera of bacteria and 22 genera of phytoplankton were isolated and identified. In May when phytoplankton bloom occurred, dominant species of bacteria were Acinetobacter calcoaceticus($29.1\%$) and Bacillus subtilis($22.9\%$), and dominant species of phytoplankton were Chaetoceros spp.($62.8\%$) and Skeletonema spp. ($19.4\%$). Pseudomonas spp., which was the most abundant bacterial species during the study periods, were rapidly decreased in May. In laboratory studies of culturing bacteria and phytoplankton isloated in May, the growth of Pseudomonas vesicularis seems to be influenced by the concentrations of excretion matter of Chaetoceros spp. To examine the result colsely, the problem of pure isolation for phytoplankton must be solved and more experimental process have to be conducted.

To clarify the phytoplankton blooms in Lake Shihwa after the construction of a dyke, a study on the environmental factors, the distribution of chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton standing stocks, dominant species and primary productivity was carried out in Lake Shihwa and adjacent coastal areas from October, 1995 to August, 1996. Lake Shihwa is brackish water with mixing of freshwater from tributaries and the remaining salt water at the bottom. The dense phytoplankton bloom of average value of 168.6 ${\mu}gChl-a\;l^{-1}$ have occurred throughout the year in Lake Shihwa which is eutrophicated by the large input of nutrients from inflowing 5 tributaries and Shihwa Industrial Complex. The major organisms of algal bloom in Lake Shihwa were diatoms, Cyclotella atomus, Nitzschia sp. and Chaetoceros sp. in autumn and winter, and dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum and Chrysophyceae in spring and summer. The autumn and winter diatom blooms were limited by the depletion of silicate in the lake. Diatom blooms have occurred in the coastal areas adjacent to Shihwa lake from winter to summer due to the inflow of nutrient rich-water from Lake Shihwa. The primary productivities in the Lake Shihwa ranged from 2,653 mgC $m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ to 9,505 mgC $m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ with an average of 3,972 mgC $m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. However, most of the high primary production was limited to the shallow euphotic zone due to the inhibition of light penetration. The primary productivities during autumn and winter were limited by the depletion of silicate. Lack of photosynthesis and the decomposition of falling organic matter under the middle of water column accelerated the depletion of dissolved oxygen in the bottom layer.

Samples were collected to investigate the effect of salinity change on biological interaction between primary producers and herbivores in water column of the Youngsan estuary (Mokpo Harbor) at 8 stations from October 2003 to September 2004. The highest river freshwater inputs were introduced into the estuary from the Youngsan dike during summer (June and July 2004). Ranges of salinity were between 6 and 28.9 psu when the gates of dike were open whereas the ranges were between 24.4 and 30.3 psu when the gates were closed. Algal bloom occurred in February and July when the gates were not open at the upper region of the Youngsan estuary and the bloom was dominated $(70\%)$ by large cells of phytoplankton $(micro-sized;>20{\mu}m).\;Nano-sized (2-20{\mu}m)$ and pico-sized phytoplankton $(<2{\mu}m)$ were dominant in October, November 2003, June, August and September 2004 when the gates were open suggesting that size structure was affected by river discharge from the dike. Micro-and meso-zooplankton (herbivores) displayed the similar pattern to that of phytoplankton. The biomass of zooplankton was higher when the gates were closed than when the gates open and also the biomass was higher at the upper region of the harbor system. This results suggest that freshwater inputs affect size structure and biomass of phytoplankton by changing salinity, nutrient inputs, turbidity or light level In water column resulting in the change of the interaction between primary producters and herbivores in the Youngsan estuary.

The occurrence of cyanobacteria causes problems such as oxygen depletion and increase of organic matter in the water body due to mass prosperity and death. Each year, Algae bloom warning System is issued due to the effects of summer heat and drought. It is necessary to quantitatively characterize the occurrence of cyanobacteria for proactive green algae management in the main Nakdong river. In this study, we analyzed the major influencing factors on cyanobacteria bloom using visualization and correlation analysis. A decision tree, a machine learning method, was used to quantitatively analyze the conditions of cyanobacteria according to the influence factors. In all the weirs, meteorological factors, temperature and SPI drought index, were significantly correlated with cyanobacterial cell number. Increasing the number of days of heat wave and drought block the mixing of water in the water body and the stratification phenomenon to promote the development of cyanobacteria. In the long term, it is necessary to proactively manage cyanobacteria considering the meteorological impacts.

Algae is an indispensable primary producer in the ecosystem by supplying energy to consumers in the aquatic ecosystem, and is largely divided into green algae, blue-green algae, and diatoms. In the case of blue-green algae, the water temperature rises, which occurs in the summer and overgrows, which is the main cause of the algae bloom. Recently, the change in the occurrence time and frequency of the algae bloom is increasing due to climate change. Existing algae survey methods are performed by collecting water and measuring through sensors, and time, cost and manpower are limited. In order to overcome the limitations of these existing monitoring methods, research has been conducted to perform remote monitoring using spectroscopic devices such as multispectral and hyperspectral using satellite image, UAV, etc. In this study, we tried to confirm the possibility of species classification of remote monitoring through laboratory-scale experiments through algal culture and river water collection. In order to acquire hyperspectral images, a hyperspectral sensor capable of analyzing at 400-1000 nm was used. In order to extract the spectral characteristics of the collected river water for classification of algae species, filtration was performed using a GF/C filter to prepare a sample and images were collected. Radiation correction and base removal of the collected images were performed, and spectral information for each sample was extracted and analyzed through the process of extracting spectral information of algae to identify and compare and analyze the spectral characteristics of algae, and remote sensing based on hyperspectral images in rivers and lakes. We tried to review the applicability of monitoring.
Anatoxin-a is a cyanobacterial neurotoxin with a high toxicity produced by Anabaena, Aphanizomenon and Oscillatoria. Water bloom, formed by Anabaena has been occurring frequently in Lake Yeongchun. It is need to develop a sensitive method for determination of anatoxin-a to control potential hazard in raw water resources. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method of anatoxin-a using solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. Anatoxin-a was converted into a highly fluorescent derivative using 4-fuoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBF-F). The method was evaluated in terms of linearity of calibration curve, recovery and repeatability, and the adequate values were obtained. The method detection limit was $0.034\;{\mu}g/g$ and $0.022\;{\mu}g/L$ for algal and water samples, respectively. The concentrations of anatoxin-a were measured in algal and water samples from Lake Andong, Yeongchun and Daechung and ranged from $0.135\;{\mu}g/g$ to $10.979\;{\mu}g/g$ in algal samples and not detected in water samples.
Algal blooms not only destroy fish habitats but also diminish biological diversity of ecosystem which results into water quality deterioration of 4 major rivers in South Korea. The relationship between algal bloom and environmental factors had been analyzed through the cross-correlation function between concentration of chlorophyll a and other environmental factors. However, time series of cross-correlations can be affected by the stochastic structure such auto-correlated feature of other controllers. In order to remove external effect in the correlation analysis, the pre-whitening procedure was implemented into the cross correlation analysis. The modeling process is consisted of a series of procedure (e.g., model identification, parameter estimation, and diagnostic checking of selected models). This study provides the exclusive correlation relationship between algae concentration and other environmental factors. The difference between the conventional correlation using raw data and that of pre-whitened series was discussed. The process implemented in this paper is useful not only to identify exclusive environmental variables to model Chl-a concentration but also in further extensive application to configure causality in the environment.

Nutrients are key environmental factors in marine ecosystem. They limit algal growth when at low concentrations and cause algal bloom when at high contents. They also control the growth and succession of many other biota including bacteria and zooplankton, either directly or indirectly. Nutrient contents therefore affect both the structure and functions of marine ecosystem. To study the contents and distribution of nutrients in Chinese Bohai Sea, two cruise surveys were undertaken in August 2000 (summer) and January 2001 (winter), respectively. A total of 595 water samples were collected from 91 sites. After collection the samples were transported to the laboratory and five nutrients, i.e., nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate and silicate, were analyzed. The results showed that tile average concentration of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) in Bohai Sea in winter (6.5293.717 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/) was significantly higher than that in summer (3.717 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/). The phosphorus concentration in winter (0.660 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/) was also significantly higher than that in summer (0.329 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/). Mean silicate concentration in winter (7.858 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/) was not significantly different from that in summer (7.200 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/). Nutrients also varied considerable among different areas within Bohai Sea. TIN concentration in Laizhou Bay (4.444 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/), for example, was significantly higher than those in Bohai Bay (2.270 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/) and Bohai Straight (2.431 ${\mu}$mol$.$l$\^$-1/), which probably reflects tile discharge of large amounts of nitrogen into Laizhou Bay via Yellow River. The nutrients also showed vertical distribution pattern. In summer, nutrients in bottom layer were generally higher than those in surface and medium layers. In winter, however. nutrients in different layers were not significantly different Compared with historic data, TIN contents increased continuously since early 1980s, phosphorus arid silicone contents, nevertheless, fell down to some degree. Based on atomic ratios of different nutrients, nitrogen is still the main limiting factor for algal growth in Bohai Sea.
To gain a greater understanding of the potential for future harmful algal bloom (HAB) outbreaks and to trace the dispersal paths of dinoflagellates, sediment samples were collected from 13 stations in the southeastern Yellow Sea. 23 different types of dinoflagellate resting cysts were identified from the samples. Protoceratium reticulatum (1-391 cells/g dry weight), Gonyaulax scrippsae (0-254 cells/g dry weight), G. spinifera (0-301 cells/g dry weight) and Alexandrium spp. (ellipsoidal type) (0-76 cells/g dry weight) were the dominant species at all surveyed stations. The overall distribution pattern demonstrated that the resting cyst densities were highest in the offshore area and decreased gradually toward the Korean coast. On the other hand, the composition rate of resting cysts of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate species to the total dinoflagellates was higher in the Korean coast region than in the offshore area. We supposed that this distribution pattern of dinoflagellate resting cysts appeared to be influenced by the hydrographic features and environmental conditions of the Yellow Sea.
