Cotyledon and leaf development of six important forage legums were compared to study their contribution to the seedling growth, Cotyledons of forage legumes expanded their size rapidly during one week maximum size was reached and entered senescence. Larger seeds produced greater colyledon area, and speed of colyledon expansion was closely associated with seedling growth. Earlier onset leaf production and earlier leaf development were major determinant factor initial seedling growth. Alfalfa and red clover which have larger seeds were good in seedling vigor with larger photosynthetic area. Alsike clover and white clover with small seeds showed also good seedling vigor, as they developed leaves early with relatively high photosynthetic rate. On the other hand, though lespedeza has heavy seeds, its seedling vigor was very poor with slow photosynthetic area development and low photosynthetic rate.

Objective: A study was conducted to quantify the performance differences of the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) calibration models developed with different degrees of hay sample preparations. Methods: A total of 227 imported alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and another 360 imported timothy (Phleum pratense L.) hay samples were used to develop calibration models for nutrient value parameters such as moisture, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, crude protein, and in vitro dry matter digestibility. Spectral data of hay samples prepared by milling into 1-mm particle size or unground were separately regressed against the wet chemistry results of the abovementioned parameters. Results: The performance of the developed NIRS calibration models was evaluated based on R2, standard error, and ratio percentage deviation (RPD). The models developed with ground hay were more robust and accurate than those with unground hay based on calibration model performance indexes such as R2 (coefficient of determination), standard error, and RPD. Although the R2 of calibration models was mainly greater than 0.90 across the feed value indexes, the R2 of cross-validations was much lower. The R2 of cross-validation varies depending on feed value indexes, which ranged from 0.61 to 0.81 in alfalfa, and from 0.62 to 0.95 in timothy. Estimation of feed values in imported hay can be achievable by the calibrated NIRS. However, the NIRS calibration models must be improved by including a broader range of imported hay samples in the modeling. Conclusion: Although the analysis accuracy of NIRS was substantially higher when calibration models were developed with ground samples, less sample preparation will be more advantageous for achieving rapid delivery of hay sample analysis results. Therefore, further research warrants investigating the level of sample preparations compromising analysis accuracy by NIRS.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of tall type mixtures and tall+short type mixtures on dry matter yield, botanical composition and quality. The experimental design includes two mixture types: Tall type mixtures(TM); orchardgrass(Potomac) 40+tall fescue(Fawn) 20+Festulolium braunii (Paulita) 10+perennial ryegrass(Reveille) 10+timothy(Climax) 10+red clover(Kenland) 5+alfalfa(Vernal) 5%) and tall+short type mixtures(TSM); orchardgrass(Potomac) 40+tall fescue(Fawn) 20+Kentucky bluegrass(Newport, turf type) 10+redtop(Barricuda, turf type) 10+perennial ryegrass(Palmer III, turf type) 10+red fescue(Flyer II, turf type) 5+white clover(Regal) 5%. The dry matter(DM) yield was higher obtained in TSM than that of TM, but there was no significant difference between TM and TSM. In the chemical composition, there was no significant difference between TM and TSM, but the content of cellulose, lignin were higher in TM than those in TSM(p<0.05). Also, the content of acid detergent fiber which affected dry matter digestibility was higher in TM than that of TSM. The crude protein dry matter yield was not observed significant difference between TM and TSM, but digestible dry matter(DDM) yield was higher in TSM than that of TM. In botanical composition, tall fescue, alfalfa and orchardgrass were highly maintained in TM but white clover, tall fescue and orchardgrass were highly, and redtop, red fescue were continuously maintained in TSM. In this experiment, DM yields and quality of two mixture types were no difference. However, the tall+short type mixtures(TSM) were more effective in enhancing the dry matter digestibility and DDM yield, and in maintaining the various botanical composition.

This experiment was conducted to introduce strip croppings fur decreasing the damage of the continuous com cultivation at the experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops division, National Livestock Research Institute from 1999 to 2000. Introduced mps for strip cropping to the continuously com cultivated field were red clover (RC), alfalfa(AL), and mixture of grass md legume. Fall panicum(FP), which is one of warm season's weeds was focused on its emerged quantity in com field changed by the level of soil water content and degree of the continuous corn cultivation. The ranges of yearly gained forage fresh yields including weeds like mainly FP were 119.4 ${\~}$ 169.6 in the continuous cultivation with com and rye and 64.9 ${\~}$ 83.3 ton / ha in the corn mono-cropping. Meanwhile, the percentages of pure com in continuous com cultivation plot were only $31-38\%$. This was for the mainly emergence of FP in the continuously com cultivated field. The ranges of average fresh yield of emerging FP were 45.6${\~}$63.4 ton/ ha in the continuously com cultivated field which were over the ranges of yields of rye, 28.2 ${\~}$ 41.6 ton/ ha. The dry matter yields of red clover, alfalfa and mixture with grass and legume introduced for strip cropping were 10.2, 10.6 and 10.6 ton / ha, respectively and these were about the 1/4 average fresh com yield. After strip cropping of red clover, alfalfa and mixture with grass and legume, the yields of corn increased to 56, 82, 88 and 79 ton / ha, respectively and com yield was much better in the alfalfa strip cropping.
Inoculation responses of alfalfa[Medicago sativa(L.) Vernal] to Rhizobium meliloti with nitrogen fertilization were characterized by soil populations and plant yields from 1989 to 1991 at cultivated upland soil, which contained $3.1{\times}10$cells of R. meliloti/g.soil. The results obtained accordingly to fertilizing with 8Kg N/10a and differently inoculating the host such as initial and annual inoculation methods were as follows : 1. Soil populations of R. meliloti were increased more at no nitrogen fertilized condition compared to nitrogen fertilized condition to 2nd year experiment from 1st year that came up $1.6{\times}10^3$cells/g.soil, but at 3rd year the trend was reversed. Between inoculation methods, on the whole, the annual inoculation caused more populations, which were $2.0{\times}10^4$cells/g.soil in maximum number. And the populations declined after winter but recovered passing through summer season. 2. Alfalfa yields were mainly influenced by rhizobial populations rather than by fertilizing nitrogen showing a significant correlation(Y=0.36+0.287X, $r^2=0.58^{**}$) with the former. The increased extents of yields obtained by inoculation at no nitrogen and nitrogen fertilized conditions, respectively, were 66 and 10% in 1st : 13 and 20% in 2nd : 19 and 13% in 3rd year experiment with the initial inoculation, and were 66 and 10% in 1st ; 30 and 20% in 2nd : 35 and 36% in 3rd year experiment with the annual inoculation. 3. The results demonstrated the importance of inoculating, if possible, annual inoculating alfalfa to get much yields even at cultivated upland soil.
A study was conducted to obtain acid tolerant and superior Rhizobium meliloti strain for alfalfa on hilly acid soils. With host plant, eight isolates of R, meliloti selected in the vicinity of Milyang were evaluated for their ability to establish symbiotic effectiveness in acidified tube culture medium and vermiculite pot with different urea levels. Among isolates "YA03" was characterized for the ability to manifest to acid tolerance in three different soils of which pH were 5.0, 6.0, and 7.5. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Of eight isolates "YA03" and "YA09" performed nodule in the tube medium of pH5.0, and in the symbiotic effectiveness YA03 was superior to others. 2. Alfalfa growth and $N_2-fixing$ activity by the inoculation of "YA03" isolate were better than others at the level of urea 1.25mM as well as nonurea. 3. Application of urea with inoculation of "YA03" islate to alfalfa was one of the effective factors for symbiotic effectiveness. 4. In infertile soil of pH5.0 inoculation of R. meliloti "YA03" to alfalfa caused the increase of shoot dry matter of 320% as compared to the control, and the total amount of yield was 131% as much yield in moderate fertile soil of pH7.5. Finally R. meliloti "YA03" isolate was selected as an acid tolerant strain.

Neonicotinoid pesticides, widely used worldwide as potent insecticides, have been found to have detrimental effects on the environment and living organisms due to their persistent residues. This study aimed to investigate the neonicotinoid pesticides, imidacloprid, and clothianidin, focusing on their impact on honey bee toxicity and foliar residue levels. Alfalfa was selected as control crop while bell peppers, and cucumbers were chosen as representative application crops, respectively. The investigation involved comparing the toxicity and foliar residue levels resulting from soil and foliar treatments, with a focus on identifying potential shortcomings in conventional foliar residue toxicity testing methods. Imidacloprid and clothianidin were applied to crops or soil at recommended rates and through irrigation. The honey bee mortality rate (RT25) over time was determined, and pesticide residues on leaves were quantified using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results revealed that foliar treatment with imidacloprid on alfalfa resulted in an RT25 of less than 1 day, with residues ranging from 1.07 to 19.27 mg/kg. In contrast, application on bell peppers showed RT25 within 9 days, with residues ranging from 1.00 to 45.10 mg/kg. Clothianidin foliar treatment displayed RT25 within 10 days on alfalfa, with residues between 0.61 and 2.57 mg/kg. On bell peppers, RT25 was within 28 days, with residues ranging from 0.13 to 2.85 mg/kg. Soil treatment with imidacloprid and clothianidin in alfalfa exhibited minimal impact on honey bees and residues of 0.05 to 0.37 mg/kg. However, in applied crops, imidacloprid showed RT25 within 28 days and residues ranging from 4.47 to 130.43 mg/kg, while clothianidin exhibited RT25 within 35 days and residues between 5.96 and 42.32 mg/kg. In conclusion, when comparing honey bee toxicity and foliar residues among crops, application crops had a more significant impact on honey bee mortality and higher residue levels compared to control crops. Moreover, soil treatment for application crops resulted in higher RT25 and residue levels compared to foliar treatment. Therefore, to ensure pesticide safety and environmental sustainability, diverse research approaches considering different crops and application methods are necessary for the safety assessment of imidacloprid and clothianidin.
The effects of dietary fiber on true digestibility of amino acids by growing pigs were studied, using semi-purified diets formulated from alfalfa meal, cassava leaf meal, rubber seed meal and leucacna meal at 20% level. A protein-free diet including 5% cellulose was formulated for correcting the endogenous amino acid loss. Across all the diets, arginine was the most digestible while the least at ileal level was threonine; methionine and/or histidine at fecal level respectively. The true digestibility value of amino acids at ileal level were higher than at fecal level except control diet (cellulose). The true digestibility values at ileal level were similar for all diets but differed at fecal level in different magnitude. These results indicate that undigestible compound in individual feedstuff might confound. True digestibility should be studied together for accurate diet formulation as apparent digestibility decreased when their amino acid concentration in the diet was reduced.
We examine the effect of environment on star formation activity of a sample of a galaxy group catalogue constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS DR8) given in Tempel et al.(2012). As an environmental parameter, we use the richness of the galaxy group. According to this parameter, we select 6846 galaxies in dense environment and 297335 galaxies in low environment. By comparing the two samples, we identify the different relationship between star formation rate and stellar mass. In order to compare galaxies in different environment, we fixed other parameters(color, apparent magnitude), which can affect star formation efficiency except for stellar mass. Also, based on HI mass from the ALFALFA survey, we study the environmental dependence of Kennicutt-Schmidt law which show the correlation between star formation rate and gas content.
We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopic data of ~380 star forming galaxies in the Virgo cluster to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. The chemical evolution of galaxies is linked to their star formation histories as well as to the gas interchange in different environments. We derived star formation rate (SFR) and gaseous metallicity (e.g., oxygen abundance) of star forming galaxies. Combining with GALEX ultraviolet photometry and ALFALFA HI 21 cm data, we examine the relations between SFRs, metallicity, and HI deficiency of galaxies in various regions of the Virgo cluster. We also quantify the degree of ram pressure around galaxy using the ROSAT X-ray surface brightness map. We discuss environmental effects on the chemical properties and evolution of star forming galaxies.
