Scouting Methods for Larva and Adult Alfalfa Weevil, Hypera postica (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on Chinese Milkvetch, Astragalus sinicus L. (자운영답에서 알팔파바구미 유충 및 성충 조사방법)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the scouting methods for larva and adults of the alfalfa weevil, $Hypera$ $postica$ Gyllenhal on Chinese milkvetch, $Astragalus$ $sinicus$ L. in the field. Three sampling methods, shake-bucket, shake-picking, and a sweeping net were evaluated for collecting alfalfa weevil larvae. We found significant differences among scouting methods and date in all survey fields. Sweep-net sampling was less able to detect small larvae than large larvae, which were not detected until early April whereas the shake-bucket, and shake-picking methods efficiently collected larvae from middle March. A Pitfall trap with three different baits - no bait, kidney bean seeds and sprouting kidney beans were compared for collection efficiency of alfalfa weevil adults. Collection efficiencies were significantly different by bait(p<0.018). Traps baited with sprouting kidney beans were the most efficient for collecting the alfalfa weevil. The number of alfalfa weevil caught was not significantly different between kidney bean seed and no bait in the pitfall trap. Therefore, the shake-bucket method for larvae and a pitfall trap baited with sprouting kidney beans for adults are recommended for scouting of the alfalfa weevil in a Chinese milkvetch field.

Bioassay of Allelopathy Substance Related Injury by Successive Cropping in Alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) (알팔파 연작장해에 관여하는 타감작용 물질의 탐색 및 생물검정)

  • This experiments were conducted to determine the effect of allelopathy and autotoxicity in alfalfa. Among several alfalfa cultivars, the substances exudated from seven cultivars including Medicago sativa, c.v. Luna, Sparta, Magnum, Husky, Milkmaker, Challenger and Anchor inhibited the germination and seedling growth of radish, ranging from 60 to 80%. When allelopathic substances were exudated from the soil of the alfalfa-cultivated field, the increased levels of substance retarded the germination rate and seedling growth of radish and alfalfa. The inhibition rate was about 80%, compared with that of control. Thus, this study indicates that the allelopathy and autotoxicity substances of alfalfa influenced the germination and seedling growth in alfalfa itself and radish. When allelopathic substances were analysed by using gas chromatograph, several kinds of phenol compounds were detected as follows; Salicylic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, coumaric acid, and ferulic acid.

Ensemble Projection of Climate Suitability for Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.) in Hamkyongbukdo (함경북도 내 미래 알팔파 재배의 기후적합도 앙상블 전망)

  • It would be advantageous to grow legume forage crops in order to increase the productivity and sustainability of sloped croplands in Hamkyongbukdo. In particular, the identification of potential cultivation areas for alfalfa in the given region could aid decision-making on policies and management related to forage crop production in the future. This study aimed to analyze the climate suitability of alfalfa in Hamkyongbukdo under current and future climate conditions using the Fuzzy Union model. The climate suitability predicted by the Fuzzy Union model was compared with the actual alfalfa cultivation area in the northern United States. Climate data obtained from 11 global climate models were used as input data for calculation of climate suitability in the study region to examine the uncertainty of projections under future climate conditions. The area where the climate suitability index was greater than a threshold value (22.6) explained about 44% of the variation in actual alfalfa cultivation areas by state in the northern United States. The climatic suitability of alfalfa was projected to decrease in most areas of Hamkyongbukdo under future climate scenarios. The climatic suitability in Onseong and Gyeongwon County was analyzed to be over 88 in the current climate conditions. However, it was projected to decrease by about 66% in the given areas by the 2090s. Our study illustrated that the impact of climate change on suitable cultivation areas was highly variable when different climate data were used as inputs to the Fuzzy Union model. Still, the ensemble of the climate suitability projections for alfalfa was projected to decrease considerably due to summer depression in Hamkyongbukdo. It would be advantageous to predict suitable cultivation areas by adding soil conditions or to predict the climate suitability of other leguminous crops such as hairy vetch, which merits further studies.

Seed Coating Effect on Establishment and Early Growth of Over Sown Pasture Species (종자피복이 겉뿌림 목초의 정착과 초기 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of seed coating on germination and early growth of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schr.), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) over sown on unploughed hilly and forested areas. Establishment and early growth of coated tall fescue and orchardgrass on unploughed hilly area were not significantly influenced by seed coating. Establishment and early growth of coated alfalfa on unploughed hilly area were higher than non-coated and showed 4.7% and 4.0 g/m2, respectively. Establishment of coated tall fescue (11.8%) on forested area were higher than noncoated (0.3%), but ealy growth of tall fescue was not significantly influences by seed coating. Establishment of over sown orchardgrass on forested area was not significantly affected by seed coating, but early growth of coated seed (18.7%) was better than that of non-coated (0.3%). Establishment of coated alfalfa on forested area were higher than those of non-coated. Results of this study indicate that the establishment and early growth of over sown tall fescue, orchardgrass, and alfalfa could be improved by seed coating.

Nutritional quality of leaf proteins prepared from crops containing phenolic compounds and polyphenolase (Phenolic compound와 polyphenolase 함유 작물로부터 조제한 녹엽단백질의 영양가)

  • Italian ryegrass, red clover, sorghum, and alfalfa were used for leaf protein preparation. Fresh leaves were pulped in the presence or absence of a reducing agent(sodium ascorbate or NaHSO$_{4}$) and green juice was heated and washed with acetone. The biological evaluation of leaf proteins was carried out by the growth method with male rats weighing about 45g. Italian ryegrass, red clover, and sorghum were brown when leaves were pulped in the absence of a reducing agent. On the other hand, alfalfa had neither o-diphenolics nor polyphenolase, and hence the alfalfa leaf protein did not brown during pulping ever in the absence of a reducing agent. The brown leaf protein from Italian ryegrass hd lower digestibility than the leaf protein protected from browning, although there were no difference in growth-promoting effect and protein efficiency ratio(PER)between the two leaf protein. The feeding of brown leaf protein from red clover resulted in the lowering of weight gain, digestibility, and PER, and all the measurement including diet intake were lowered by feeding the brown leaf protein from sorghum. In the case of alfalfa leaf protein, there were no difference in nutritional quality between the two leaf protein made with and without an attempt to prevent browning. The results mentioned above indicate that the occurrence of phenolics and polyphemolase in a crop in responsible for the browning of leaf protein and that the browning of leaf protein caused its nutritional impairment.

The Integrational Operation Method for the Modeling of the Pan Evaporation and the Alfalfa Reference Evapotranspiration (증발접시 증발량과 알팔파 기준증발산량의 모형화를 위한 통합운영방법)

  • The goal of this research is to develop and apply the integrational operation method (IOM) for the modeling of the monthly pan evaporation (PE) and the alfalfa reference evapotranspiration ($ET_r$). Since the observed data of the alfalfa $ET_r$ using lysimeter have not been measured for a long time in Republic of Korea, Penman-Monteith (PM) method is used to estimate the observed alfalfa $ET_r$. The IOM consists of the application of the stochastic and neural networks models, respectively. The stochastic model is applied to generate the training dataset for the monthly PE and the alfalfa $ET_r$, and the neural networks models are applied to calculate the observed test dataset reasonably. Among the considered six training patterns, 1,000/PARMA(1,1)/GRNNM-GA training pattern can evaluate the suggested climatic variables very well and also construct the reliable data for the monthly PE and the alfalfa $ET_r$. Uncertainty analysis is used to eliminate the climatic variables of input nodes from 1,000/PARMA(1,1)/GRNNM-GA training pattern. The sensitive and insensitive climatic variables are chosen from the uncertainty analysis of the input nodes. Finally, it can be to model the monthly PE and the alfalfa $ET_r$ simultaneously with the least cost and endeavor using the IOM.

Esterase Isozyme Banding Pattern in Leaf and Stem of Legume Plants (콩과식물의 잎과 줄기의 Esterase Isozyme Banding Pattern에 관한 연구)

  • The esterase isozyme of several legume plants were separated and visualized by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis using enzyme-specific staining. Extracts used were prepared from fully expanded young leaf and stem of six legume species which were red clover(Trifolium Pretense L.), ladino clover(Trifolium repense L.), wild white clover(Trifolium repense L.), alfalfa(Medicage sativa L.), mimosoides(Cassia mimosoides var nomame Makino), and amoena(Vicia amoena Fisch). The number of band, Phenotype and staining intensity of esterase isozyme in leaf and stem varies depending on the plant species. However, there are little difference between leaf and stem esterase isozyme in same species except alfalfa. And in the leaf and stem of mimosoides and amoena showed not any esterase(Fig. 2). Among the examined plants, the highest staining intensity and the rapidest migrating esterase isozyme was Est 1.

Development of Seed Pelleting Technique for Surface Sowing of Alfalfa (겉뿌림을 위한 알팔파의 종자펠렛팅 기술 개발)

  • Surface sowing is one of the most important methods to establish and improve grassland. An interest in seed-coating technique for surface sowing has been increased tremendously in the world today. An experiment was conducted to develop a technique for pelleting seeds for pasture production in woodlands. Results showed that pelleting seeds was a better technique than coating seeds because the pelleting reduced coating time of seeds, and it increased the amounts of coated seeds per hour. The pelleting technique was able to minimize damage to seeds through the lower temperature processing and by reducing time for drying, thus, germinating energy, and germination rate of pelleted alfalfa seeds improved. Emergence, establishment, and early growth of alfalfa from pelleted seeds were also improved in woodlands. Based on this study, we could conclude that the seed-pelleting is a very useful technique for the establishment and early growth of alfalfa in woodlands.

Melatonin and Polyphenol Contents in Some Edible Sprouts (Alfalfa, Chicory, Rape, Red Kale and Sunflower)

  • The melatonin, total polyphenol contents, and DPPH radical scavenging activity were determined in alfalfa, chicory, rape, red kale and sunflower after germination for four days at $24{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. Compared with seeds, melatonin content was increased in all sprouts, at the highest level in red kale (2,502.9 pg/g, 5.6 times higher than seed) followed by rape (2,430.1 pg/g), chicory (2,037.7 pg/g), alfalfa (1,160.8 pg/g) and sunflower (768.2 pg/g) sprout, however, the addition of tryptophan (0.5 mM), the precursor of melatonin synthesis, did not show any desirable effect. Both polyphenol content and DPPH radical scavenging activity were substantially increased in chicory (8.7 mg/g, 66%), rape (10.7 mg/g, 51%) and red kale (11.0 mg/g, 53%) sprouts, but not in alfalfa and sunflower sprouts. Melatonin content per gram polyphenol (ng/g) was also increased in all sprouts through germination. Germination was effective in increasing melatonin in all seeds tested, while its effect on polyphenol content and DPPH radical scavenging activity was species dependent.

Effects of Quality of Alfalfa Silage by Different Wheat Bran Mixing Levels (밀기울 첨가수준이 알팔파 Silage 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • To find out the optimum mixing level of wheat bran to improve the quality of 1st cut Alfalfa silage, this trial was canied out at two-year's Alfalfa monoculture field of the National Livestock Research Institute, Suwon, Korea, from May 1955 to Oct. 1995. The results are as follows. I. According to the increase of wheat bran mixing level, DM content was high from 23.19%(nil) to 35.70%(40% mixing), pH of silage were low from 5.51(nil) to 4.45(40% mixing). but there were not significant at 20% mixing or more(P>0.05). 2. Also it was appeared to the same trend at Lactic acid content and in the Flieg's score of silage it was highest as 59 in the 20% mixing level. 3. In chemical component of silages there were not significant at 20% mixing or more in crude protein, crude fiber and ashes content, 30% mixing or more in ether extract and 10% or less in NFE content(P>0.05). 4. TDN, NEL and StE contents were low as adding level was increased. respectively, but there were not significant(P>O.OS). As mentioned above the results, desirable mixing level of wheat bran to lstcut Alfalfa to improve the quality of silage was 20% of fresh weight.
