$\beta$-1,3-glucanase from Pyrococcus furiosus was applied for the saccharification of laminarin, which is a major oligo-saccharide component of brown algae, and the reaction mixture produced from laminarin was utilized as a substrate for alcohol fermentation using yeast. To prepare the recombinant $\beta$-1,3-glucanase, a $\beta$-1,3-glucanase gene was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and purified. Laminarin was degraded to an oligo- and mono-saccharide, such as glucose, after reaction with the purified recombinant $\beta$-1,3-glucanase, and the products after enzymatic treatment were confirmed by TLC and HPLC analysis. Decomposed laminarin after enzyme reaction was only added to the medium as a C-source for yeast alcohol production reaction. 0.3% alcohol production was detected from the cultured broth by gas chromatography after 48 hr of incubation. Further evaluation for optimal conditions of saccharification and alcohol fermentation can be suggested, as well as the possibility of using this enzymatic method to produce ethanol using laminarin.

Methyl alcohol is one of the basic intermediates in the chemical industry and is also being used as a fuel additive and as a clean burning fuel. In this study, conversion of carbon dioxide to methyl alcohol was investigated using catalytic chemical methods. Ceramic monoliths (M) with $400cell/in^2$ were used as catalyst supports. Monolith-supported CuO-ZnO catalysts were prepared by wash-coat method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by using ICP analysis, TEM images and XRD patterns. The catalytic activity for carbon dioxide hydrogenation to methyl alcohol was investigated using a flow-type reactor under various reaction temperature, pressure and contact time. In the preparation of monolith-supported CuO-ZnO catalysts by wash-coat method, proper concentration of precursors solution was 25.7% (w/v). The mixed crystal of CuO and ZnO was well supported on monolith. And it was known that more CuO component may be supported than ZnO component. Conversion of carbon dioxide was increased with increasing reaction temperature, but methyl alcohol selectivity was decreased. Optimum reaction temperature was about $250^{\circ}C$ under 20 atm because of the reverse water gas shift reaction. Maximum yield of methyl alcohol over CuO-ZnO/M catalyst was 5.1 mol% at $250^{\circ}C$ and 20 atm.
A headspace gas chromatographic mass spectrometric (GC-MS) assay method was developed for the simultaneous determination of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), $tert$-butyl alcohol (TBA) and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene (BTEX) in soil contaminated with gasoline. 2 g of soil sample were placed in a 10 mL headspace vial filled with 5 mL of phosphoric acid solution (pH 3) saturated with NaCl, and the solution was spiked with fluorobenzene as an internal standard and sealed with a cap. The vial was heated in a heating block for 40 min at $80^{\circ}C$. The detection limits of the assay were 0.08-0.12 ${\mu}g$/kg for the analytes. For five independent determinations at 10 and 50 ${\mu}g$/kg, the relative standard deviations were less than 10%. The method was used to analyze fifty six soil samples collected from various regions contaminated with gasoline in Korea. The developed method may be valuable for the monitoring of the analytes in soil.
This study was carried out to investigate the changes in the composition of essential oils for the improvement of air-curing process of burley tobacco leaves. From the essential oils isolated from the cured tobacco leaves by steam distillation method, 90 compounds including 15 acids and esters, 19 alcohols, 23 aldehydes and ketones, 19 hydrocarbons, and 14 miscellaneous compounds, could be identified by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Among them, acids and esters were gradually decreased during the progress of curing after harvesting. A rapid increase in alcohol content was observed in the earlier stage of curing, but thereafter, decrease followed until the end of curing However, aldehyde and ketone groups were continuously increased during curing and were 3 times higher in quantity after curing than at the harvesting time. The concentration of hydrocarbons was increased in the earlier stage of curing, but gradually decreased from the middle stage. The miscellaneous compounds were continuously increased in content until the end stage of curing, with rapid increased in the earlier stage of curing.

Arylmethyl halides(benzyl chloride, BZYC; benzal chloride, BZYA; benzotrichloride, BZTC) and related compounds(benzyl alcohol, BZYA; benzoyl chloride, BZOC) were determined by GC using capillary column. Detailed results are as follows. 1. Stability In methanol benzotrichloride slowly transferred to benzoyl chloride by hydrolysis(ca. 7.5% for 5 days), but the others were stable. Therefore, benzotrichloride solution should be prepared just before analysis. 2. GC analysis Tenax-GC was used to absorbent and desorption solvents were $CCl_4$ and MeOH. Arylmethyl halides were analyzed within 7.5min without interference with related compounds. The calibration curve(ca. 15-80 ppm in soln), repeatability(n=10) and the desorption efficiency were good. Limit of detection by NIOSH method was about 0.003 ppm for arylmethyl halide, respectively. To analyze arylmethyl halides and related compounds in working places GC using capillary column is anticipated to be used effectively.
Diamond film was deposited on Si wafer substrate from a gas mixture of methane, hydrogen and oxygen by microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition. The effects of the pre-treatments of the substrate and of the oxygen addition on the diamond film synthesis are described. In order to obtain diamond film, the substrate was pre-treated with 3 kinds of methods. When the substrate was ultrasonically vibrated within the ethyl alcohol dispersed with 25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diamond powder, the denset diamond film was deposited. Addition of oxygen in the gas mixture of methane and hydrogen improved the crystallinity of the deposited diamond film and also increased the deposition rate of the diamond film more than two times.
Vortices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. however. are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LlF technique are discussed for the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.
The whole volatile flavor concentrate obtained from Jindalrae flower was separated into hydrocarbon and oxygen-containing compound(OCC) fractions, and the OCC-fraction was further separated by column chromatography into nine sub-fractions, respectively. These fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography and combined gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. One hundred and sixty-two components, including 61 hydrocarbons, 18 aldehydes, 18 esters, 41 alcohols, 3 ketones, 4 oxides, 8 acids, 6 phenols and 3 miscellaneous components, were identified.

Three types of SnO2 based semiconductor gas sensors sensitive to propane, alcohol, carbon monoidxe and acetone have been fabricated. Adding about 0.3wt.% PdCl2 or SrCO3 to SnO2 improved the sentivity. The devices were tired for one hour in air in the temperarure range of $600^{\circ}C$ to 1, 00$0^{\circ}C$. An electrical warning system using the fabricated sensors is suggested.
A quartz type gasification reactor was designed and used for pyrolysis and gasification of sawdust, ricestraw and ricehusk. The initial reaction temperature was 350$^{\circ}C$, and up to 550$^{\circ}C$ to complete pyrolysis and gasification reaction. In order to examine the effect of catalyst on reaction temperature, $K_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$ as catalyst were also used. The product gas mixtures are identified to be CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$ and $CH_3CHO$ etc. by Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometer. The highest gas volume of the gasified sawdust at 550$^{\circ}C$ amounts to 1800ml/g of sawdust, even though the yield and composition of this product gas are depending on the reaction temperature of the reactor and catalyst used.
