  • The recording density of a hard disk drive is increasing so rapidly that the storage capacity of a commercial HDD in PC reaches several hundred giga bytes recently. Many technologies related to the HDD, such as servo, media, actuator dynamics, thermo and fluid dynamics, etc. must be developed together to realize high recording density. Especially, researches in the airflow inside the HDD cavity become important as the rotational speed of a disk increases. Typical problem due to the airflow is the vibration of an actuator as the airflow collides with an I-block, suspensions and sliders, that is, FIV(Flow Induced Vibration). This problem is one of the significant sources of increasing TMR so that it must be resolved. In this research, a disk damper shape has been modified to minimize the effects of airflow on the actuator. Modified disk dampers which change flow field inside HDD cavity show good effects not only on the disk (tufter but also on the vibration of an actuator. Vibrations of E- block and slider have been measured with LDV and the airflow field inside the HDD cavity has been analyzed using a commercial package to verify these effects.

  • In air stripping of ammonia from the aqueous solution, a new removal model was presented considering the equilibrium principles for the ammonia in aqueous solution and between the aqueous and air phase. The effects of pH, temperature and airflow rate on the ammonia removal were evaluated with the model. In addition, the saturation degree of ammonia in air was defined and used to evaluate the effect of each experimental factor on the removal rate. As pH (8.9 to 11.9) or temperature (20 to 50 oC) was increased, the overall removal rate constants in all cases were appeared to be increased. Our presented model shows that the degrees of saturation were about the same (0.45) in all cases when the airflow condition remains the same. This result indicates that the effect of pH and temperature were directly taken into consideration in the model equation. As the airflow increases, the overall removal rate constants were increased in all cases as expected. However, the saturation degree was exponentially decreased with increasing the airflow rate in the air phase (or above-surface) aeration. In the subsurface aeration the saturation degree remains a constant value of 0.65 even though the airflow rate was increased. These results indicate that the degree of saturation is affected mainly by the turbulence of the aqueous solution and remains the same above a certain airflow rate.

  • The recording density of a hard disk drive(HDD) has been increased so rapidly that the storage capacity of a commercial HDD for the personal computer already reaches several hundred giga-bytes recently. Many technologies related to the HDD, such as servo, media, actuator dynamics, thermo and fluid dynamics, etc. must be developed together to realize higher recording density. Especially, airflow inside the HDD cavity has been concerned as the rotational speed of the disk increases. Typical problem due to the airflow is the off-track vibration of a head stack assembly(HSA) as the airflow collides with the E-block, suspensions, and sliders, i.e., the flow induced vibration(FIV). This problem is one of the most significant sources of the track mis-registration(TMR) so that it must be resolved. In this study, disk damper shape is modified to minimize the influence of airflow on the HSA. Modified disk dampers, which change the flow field of the inside cavity of a HDD, show good effects not only on the disk vibration but also on the off-track vibration of a HSA. Vibrations of E-block and slider have been measured with LDV and the airflow field inside the HDD cavity has been analyzed with commercial CFD program to verify these effects.

  • A ventilation model was developed for predicting the air change per hour(ACH) in buildings and the airflow rates between zones of a multi-room building. In this model, the important parameters used in the calculation of airflow are wind velocity, wind direction, terrain effect, shielding effect by surrounding buildings, the effect of the window type and insect screening, etc. Also, the resulting set of mass balance equations required for the process of calculation of airflow rates are solved using a Conte-De Boor method. When this model was applied to the building which had been tested by Chandra et al.(1983), the comparison of predicted results by this study with measured results by Chandra et al. indicated that their variations were within -10%~+12%. Also, this model was applied to a building with five zones. As a result, when the wind velocity and direction did not change, terrain characteristics influenced the largest and window types influenced the least on building ventilation among terrain characteristics, local shieldings, and window types. Except for easterly and westerly winds, the ACH increased depending on wind velocity. The wind direction had influence on the airflow rates and directions through openings in building. Thus, this model can be available for predicting the airflow rates within buildings, and the results of this study can be useful for the quantification of airflow that is essential to the research of indoor air quality(temperature, humidity, or contaminant concentration) as well as to the design of building with high energy efficiency.

  • We study the characteristics of airflow and sound noise induced by disk rotation in optical disk drives. The characteristics of airflow around a rotating disk surrounded by various tray structures are numerically investigated using a commercial CFD program and then compared with experimental results. Sound pressure and intensity caused by the fluid-structure interactions in the CD/DVD-ROM drive are measured, and the effect of the ariflow on the sound noise and disk vibration is discussed. In order to reduce airflow-induced noise and vibration around the rotating disk, tray geometry is modified. Both numerical and experimental studies implemented with different tray models show that the improved tray model alters the characteristics of the disk-induced airflow, causing the reduction of the airflow-induced sound level.

  • The present study examined the change of aerodynamic features after laryngomicrosurgery in patients with vocal polyps. Aerodynamic evaluation was performed in thirty-nine patients (15 males and 24 females) one week before surgery and four weeks after surgery. Evaluation protocols of vital capacity, maximum sustained phonation(MXPH), and voicing efficiency(VOFT) were used to collect 29 phonatory aerodynamic measures, requiring voice with a comfortable pitch and loudness. Statistically significant changes were found for phonation time and airflow values in the MXPH protocol, while changes were also found for airflow values, subglottal pressure values and acoustic resistance values in the VOFT protocol. Although phonation time was increased in both male and female patients, gender-dependent changes were found in airflow measurements. Men's phonation time increased with no difference in airflow rate, but women's phonation time increased with decreased airflow rate and lower subglottal pressure. The changes of aerodynamic features may be affected by women's self-perceived change for vocal attitude, which was reducing sense of vocal effort after surgery.

  • The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of conjugate forced and natural convection in the triple-glazed airflow window, where the outer air passes through a space contrived between the interior and exterior window panes, were studied numerically by a finite volume method for the elliptic form of the Navier-Stokes equations. The investigation focused on the influence of window geometry, ventilastion rate and solar energy on the temperature, velocity distribution and thermal performance of the airflow window. The comparison between the triple-glazed airflow window and the enclosed triple-glazed window was also made to evaluate the effect of buoyancy upon which the thermal performance of the window depended.

  • This paper proposes an improved mathematical model for predicting the frosting behavior on a two-dimensional fin considering the heat conduction of heat exchanger fins under frosting conditions. The model consists of laminar flow equation in airflow, diffusion equation of water vapor for frost layer, and heat conduction equation in fin, and these are coupled together. In this model, the change in three-dimensional airside airflow caused by frost growth is accounted for. The fin surface temperature increased toward the fin tip due to the fin heat conduction. On the contrary, the temperature gradient in the airflow direction(x-dir.) is small throughout the entire fin. The frost thickness in the direction perpendicular to airflow, i.e. z-dir., decreases exponentially toward the fin tip due to non-uniform temperature distribution. The rate of decrease of heat transfer in the airflow direction is high compared to that in the z-direction due to more decrease in the sensible and latent heat rate in x-direction.

  • The flow and heat transfer characteristics of the exhaust airflow window system were studied numerically by a finite volume method. Attention was paid to see the decrease in indoor cooling load. The exhaust air flow rate, solar energy power and aspect ratio of window were considered as main variables. From the result of the comparison between the exhaust airflow window and the enclosed window, the indoor heat gain was reduced remarkably by 76%. It is also suggested that in the design of the exhaust airflow window optimum values of aspect ratio, H/W and exhaust air flow rate, Re were about 0.05 and 600, respectively.
