  • The air gap between electromagnet and guiderail in an EMS-type Maglev vehicle must be maintained within an allowable deviation by controlling the voltage on the magnet. In this type of vehicle, the air gap response is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics of the elevated guideway, such as stiffness, damping and mass. For this reason, the dynamic interaction between the vehicle with electromagnets and the elevated guideway must be understood to ensure safe running. The response of the air gap to guideway characteristics such as mass, stiffness, and damping are analyzed through vehicle tests over different guideways. Through such tests, the design requirements for Maglev vehicles and elevated guideways can be established, improving levitation stability.

  • an approach to air-vehicle design, an application of the radio-controlled model flight test techniques has been presented. The approach presented in this study is to validate the air-vehicle design configuration by analyzing the flight test results of scale model with dynamic similarities, and then to apply the analyzed results to the aerodynamic design process in early stage of the air-vehicle development. To develop practically applicable similarity laws for the subscale flying model design, the air-vehicle motions are decoupled into rotational motions for stability & control similarities and translational motions for flight performance similarities. Also, detail techniques for radio-controlled model flight test have been developed. Based on the results obtained from the radio-controlled flight test, the present approach for air-vehicle design has shown to be useful to validate the air-vehicle design configuration.

  • In this paper, a novel air-interface is presented for Fleet-Net1, a self-organizing network for inter-vehicle and vehicle-toroadsidecommunication. The air-interface is based upon the lowchip-rate version of UMTS/TDD. To adapt the cellular UMTS standard to an air-interface for ad hoc networks, changes of the physical layer, medium access control sub-layer and radio resource management are required. An overview of the required modifications is given here. Particularly, a decentralized synchronization mechanism is presented and analyzed by means of simulations. Furthermore, changes for the medium access control are explained in detail, which allow for an efficient operation in partly meshed networks and prioritization. Performance results of the overall system considering throughput and delay are derived by means of analytical evaluations and event-driven simulations. Based on realistic mobility models, it is shown that the presented solution provides a robust communication platform even in vehicular environments. The proposed air-interface is a cost-effective solution not only for inter-vehicle communication, but also for ad hoc networking in general, benefiting from the mass-market of UMTS.

  • The feasibility of hybrid motor as a first stage of the air launch vehicle is investigated, and the result shows the hybrid motor can replace the solid motor. Optimal design study has been performed for the hybrid motor as a first stage of nanosat air launch vehicle. The first stage hybrid motor of the nanosat air launch vehicle, which uses the F-4E Phantom as a mother plane is designed for given mission requirements. Selected design variables are the number of ports, the initial oxidizer flux, the combustion chamber pressure, and the nozzle expansion ratio. The design results show that a hybrid motor can be successfully applicable to very small air launch vehicles which have severe physical constraints of length and diameter imposed by the mother plane.

  • Recently safety systems for the commercial vehicle have been rapidly developed. However, we still have many problems in the vehicle stability and the braking performance. Especially, a commercial vehicle may meet a dangerous braking condition when the vehicle is lightly loaded or empty and the road is wet or slippery. To design the air brake system for commercial vehicles, since the air brake system has many design variables, there must have been intensive researches on a method how to prevent dynamic instability and how to maximize the vehicle deceleration. In this study, mathematical models about an 8$\times$4 vehicle and an air brake system including an ABS controller have been constructed for computer simulation. Also, simple examples are applied to show the usefulness of the computer program. Designers can use this simulation program for understanding the braking characteristics of 8$\times$4 commercial vehicles such as trajectory, braking distance, longitudinal deceleration, lateral deceleration, and yaw rate on various road conditions.

  • This study examines the response when the shock by underwater explosion is transmitted to a vertical launch air-vehicle mounted on a ship using modeling and simulation, and is about a plan to increase method shock resistance to protect the air vehicle. In order to obtain an accurate mathematical model, a dynamic characteristic test was performed on similar equipment, and through this, the mathematical model could be supplemented. And, using the supplemented mathematical model, the air vehicle simulated the shock response by the underwater explosion specified in the BV043 standard. As a result of the first simulation, it was confirmed that air vehicle could not withstand shock, and air vehicle protection method using a ring spring type shock absorber was studied. In addition to the basic shape of abosber, it was confirmed that the ring spring absober can be used to increase the impact resistance of a shipborn vertical launch vehicle by performing simulations for each case by changing deseign varables.

  • To predict the dynamic behaviour of railway vehicle, the complex vehicle structure has been described by mathmatical model such as mass, spring and damper. Air-spring has played a major role to improve dynamic characteristics, vibration isolation and ride comfort. The mechanical behaviour of air spring is very complicated. The behaviour is based on fluid and thermodynamic mechanisms. The main parameters of air spring are stiffness due to compression of the air in the spring and surge reservoir, change of area stiffness and orifice damping. In this paper, we have studied an air-spring modeling method and compared the difference between calculation and test.

  • A leaf spring suspension has been widely used since it can carry big load and simplicity. But one major drawback is the poor ride performance because of the friction in the system and the high stiffness coefficient. To overcome these, air spring suspension can be used. The air spring suspension system can improve the ride of the heavy vehicle significantly and also it can adjust the height to the loading and unloading. A truck with the leaf suspension system is modified with the air suspension system and the performance of the vehicle is compared using the suggested method. The existing leaf suspension can be replaced with the air suspension system to improve the performance.

  • A three-dimensional numerical study of the WIG-effect vehicle with a direct-underside-pressurization (DUP) system and a propeller is performed to analyze the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the vehicle. The computational model includes all the compartments of a WIG-effect vehicle, including a propeller in the middle of the fuselage and an air chamber under the fuselage. The DUP system and propeller help considerably reduce the take-off speed and minimize the effect of the hump drag when the vehicle accelerates to take off on water. The airflow is accelerated by a propeller, and the air then enters the air chamber through a channel in the middle of the fuselage, this air helps increase the lift since the dynamic pressure of air is converted to static pressure. However, the air accelerated by the propeller produces excessive drag and creates yawing moment. It is found that the effect of yawing and rolling moments on static stability is negligible.

  • Static dischargers should be installed on air vehicle to emit a static electricity during flight. Especially, If static electricity is not removed by static discharger on the air vehicle, it makes ionization and corona effect on the edge of antenna and wing. Those phenomenon bring about performance degradation for radio communication and equipment operation. In this paper, the conditions such as climate, air vehicle's speed and frontal area were analyzed to design static dischargers. As a result, the static dischargers would be optimally designed for air vehicles and the performance of the static dischargers can verify according to the functional experiment. Therefore the result of this research will be used to make static discharger installation design for new air vehicle that have different size and mission.
