  • Variation of explosion characteristics by the blocks in closed vessel was investigated to analyse the effect of the block volume(volume blockage) and the surface area of the blocks(ratio of block surface area to vessel volume). Volume and surface area of blocks in explosion vessel were changed by the combination of blocks. The volume of explosion vessels was 270 liter, and the LPG-air or NG-air mixtures were ignited by the electric spark. Explosion pressure was measured with the strain type pressure transducer. From the experimental results, explosion pressure was decreased by the increase of the volume blockage and the block surface area. And the decrease of explosion pressure was more affected by the volume blockage than the surface area.

  • This paper discribes an experimental explosion risk assessment study on refrigerators containing flammable hydrocarbon refrigerant. A refrigerator used in this study is a larder fridge type, 215 liter in volume. The hydrocarbon refrigerant used in the refrigerator is iso-butane(C$_4$H$_{10}$). For the explosion safety assessment of the refrigerator, temperature of compressor, cooling air circulation fan motor, defrost heater and inner lamp were measured during the operation. And to confirm the ignitablity of flammable gas by the electric spark of the switches of the refrigerator, ON-OFF test of all switches were conducted with compulsorily near the stoichiometric concentration atmosphere of iso-butane-air mixture. As the result of experiment above mentioned and another experiment for the explosion safety assessment, we can conclude that explosion hazard in connection with the use of hydrocarbon refrigerant was few.w.

  • The assessment of catastrophic accidents such as BLEVE, vapor cloud explosion, and toxic material releases in the chemical process industries(CPI) shall be carried out according to the Requirement of PSM/SMS enforced by Korea Government Agencies, but reasonable models are not proposed for the practical application. The traditional models, TNT Equivalency Model, are well-known and helpful for the assessment of vapor cloud explosion. However, the estimated-damage-area using the traditional model has much more deviations comparing to the real damage caused by vapor cloud explosion suffered before. These are why an expert system for the assessment of vapor cloud explosion has been developed, which is based on theoretical, statistical and experimental data, and it would be helpful for CPI to evaluate the damage-area in case of vapor cloud explosion.

  • We had investigated combustion properties of rice bran dusts. Decomposition of rice bran dusts with temperature were investigated using DSC and the weight loss according to temperature using TGA in order to find the thermal hazard of rice bran dusts, and the properties of dust explosion in variation of their dust with the same particle size. Using Hartman's dust explosion apparatus which estimate dust explosion by electric ignition after making dust disperse by compressed air, dust explosion experiments have been conducted by varying concentration and size of rice bran dust.According to the results for thermodynamic stability of rice bran dust, there are little change of initiation temperature of heat generation and heating value for used particle size. But initiation temperature of heat generation decreased with high heating rate whereas decomposition heat increased with particle size. Average maximum explosion pressure was $10kgf/cm^2$ for 60/70 mesh and $1.5mg/cm^2$ dust concentration.

  • A dust explosion is a phenomenon of strong blast wave propagation involving destruction which results from dust pyrolysis and rapid oxidation in a confined space. There has been some research done to find individual explosion characteristics and common physical laws for various dust types. However, there has been insufficient number of studies related to the heat of combustion of materials and the oxygen consumption energy about materials in respect of dust explosion characteristics. The present study focuses on the relationship between dust explosion characteristics of wood dust samples and oxygen consumption energy. Since it is difficult to estimate the weight of suspended dust participating in explosions in dust explosion and mixtures are in fuel-rich conditions concentrations with equivalent ratios exceeding 1, methods for estimating explosion overpressure by applying oxygen consumption energy based on unit volume air at standard atmospheric pressure and temperature are proposed. In this study an oxygen consumption energy model for dust explosion is developed, and by applying this model to TNT equivalent model, initial explosion efficiency was calculated by comparing the results of standardized dust explosion experiments.

  • Gas turbines generating power operate in high temperature condition and use natural gas as fuel. For that reason, there are many cases where damage is done to the hot gas parts caused by the high temperature and many accidents occur like gas explosions, then various efforts are needed to maintain the hot gas parts and prevent accidents. It is difficult to find the root causes of damage to the hot gas parts from the gas explosion caused by gas leakage through rotor cooling air line from fuel gas heat exchanger during the shut down. To prevent gas turbine from damage, removal of gas leakage inside of gas turbine is required by purging the turbine before firing, improving the fuel gas heating system and installing alarm systems for detecting gas leakage from stop valve to turbine while the gas turbine has shut down.

  • The purpose of this study is to check the fire origin and cause of the fire by observing the shape of the flame propagation in air-conditioner indoor unit through the fire tests. We supposed that the flame is spread from the surroundings to the top of the air-conditioner and ignited on top of the air-conditioner with n-heptane. And then repeated this experiment twice under the same conditions. After the ignition, refrigerant filled in air-conditioner and lubricating oil exploded with large explosion and flame having high temperature and pressure belched out rapidly due to bursting refrigerant pipe linked air-conditioner between 734 seconds and 559 seconds. After result of checking the combustion residue we found that almost all of that was lost except a part of the evaporator, motor and metal. The position of short-circuit traces of wiring for the air-conditioner ignited itself is similar to that of fire damage by external flame. Therefore, we verified that it is not certain to determine the ignition cause and point by only the shape of the combustion residues.

  • The characteristics of auto-ignition and combustion process of a single droplet of emulsified fuel suspended in a high-temperature air chamber have been investigated experimentally with various droplet sizes, surrounding temperatures, and water contents. The used fuels was n-Decane and it was emulsified with varied water contents whose maximum is 30%. The high-speed camera has been adopted to measure the ignition delay and flame life time. It was also applied to observe micro-explosion behaviors. The increase of droplet size and chamber temperature cause the decrease of the ignition delay time and flame life-time. As the water contents increases, the ignition delay time increases and the micro-explosion behaviors are strengthened. The starting timings of micro-explosion and fuel puffing are compared for different droplet sizes and the amount of water contents.
