Germination Characteristic of Rhizomes of Major Monocotyledonous Weeds in Coconut Plantations of Sri Lanka

  • Panicum maximum, Panicum repens, Imperata cylindrica, Pennisetum polystachion and Cyperus rotundus are five rhizomatous grass weeds that exist and are problematic in the coconut lands of Sri Lanka. Rhizomatous weeds are the most difficult to control because of their vegetative reproduction by underground propagules. Therefore chemical and biological techniques have failed to control these weeds to acceptable levels. Experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of depth of burial, duration of sun drying or duration of air drying rhizomes of the selected weed species on germination. Depth of burial reduced germination of all species. Burying rhizomes at depths less than 10 cm inhibited germination of P. maximum and P. polystachion. Burying depths below 30~40 cm inhibited germination of all species. Sun drying or air drying rhizomes for durations less than 5 days inhibited germination of P. maximum and P. polystachion. Germinations of all species were inhibited by sun drying rhizomes for 15 days or air drying rhizomes for 20 days. Sun drying of rhizomes of all species for five days reduced the moisture content to a greater extent than air drying. The results indicated that burying rhizomes at the depthsbelow 30~40 cm, sun drying rhizomes for durations beyond 15 days or air drying rhizomes for durations beyond 20 days would be effective in controlling germination of these species. The investigations of the experiments also suggest that keeping rhizomes on the soil surface without burying, sun drying rhizomes or air drying rhizomes for durations of 5~15 days would produce weak plants.

건조기 고안 제작에 관한 연구 (An Experimental Study for Dryer)

  • A newly devised dryer with heated air for the farm products, especially suited for high water content materials such as red pepper, Beer ground, each Vegetables, and Low water content materials such as Rough rice was tested for its thermal efficiency and drying mechanism, and the optimum conditions for each sample were established. In order to improve the present rural situation of drying farm products which entirely dependent upon natural solar radiation, a study upon an economic multi-parpose dryer was conducted. A series of drying tests were run first with red pepper which is one of the important cash crop in Korean farm. And successive series of tests were also run with such proaucts as garlic, sweet potatoes, green onion, radish, Beer ground and Rough rice. The results from the above experiment in drying system with heat dryer can be summarized as follows. 1. Drying duration could be shortened by the tempering effect in high water content crop such as red pepper and beer ground. 2. The color changes occured in around 20% water content in red pepper. The degree of color change was heavily affected by high temperature and short drying duration. 3. The drying condition of red pepper was most favourable at the temperature of 85$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 80$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and 75$^{\circ}C$ at the final stage, and with the air rate of 0.81㎥/sec and with sample amount of 200kg. 4. The drying condition of Rough rice(I.R.667) was most favourable at the templature of 40$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 35$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and final stage and with the air rate of 0.2㎥/sec and with sample amount of 75kg. 5. In order to prevent the color change of red pepper and to assure high efficiency in drying mechanism, it was necessary to lower the temperature as the time passes in drying process. 6. For vege tables, the drying rate were short in early stage and there was also tempering effect. However, for garlics, Constant drying rates through the early and final stages were observed and there were no tempering effects. 7. 상이질 접착제의 적용방법에 따른 전단결합강도와 접착양상에 관한 연구 (INFLUENCE OF APPLICATION METHODS OF A DENTIN ADHESIVE ON SHEAR BOND STRENGTH AND ADHESIVE PATTERN)

  • A new 5th generation adhesive system(ONE-STEP) has been supplied which operators can apply to conditioned tooth surfaces by one simplified step. The purpose of this study was to determine whether different methods of adhesive application and various air drying duration after applying adhesive affect the shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin, and to evaluate the adhesive pattern of composite resin and dentin under SEM. Seventy-seven extracted human molar teeth were cleaned and mounted in palstic test tubes. The occlusal dentin surfaces were exposed with Diamond Wheel Saw and smoothed with Lapping and Polishing Machine (South Bay Technology Co., U.S.A.). Teeth were randomly divided into 7 groups (n=11), In experimental A group, adhesive was applied to dentin with agitation for 20 sec. In experimental N-A group, adhesive were continuously applied to dentin for 20 sec. Also control and experimental 1, 2, 3, 4 groups were dried for 10, 0, 5, 20, 30 seconds after applying adhesive, respectively, Adhesives were light cured for 10 sec. A gelatin capsule 5mm in diameter was filled with Aelitefil$^{TM}$ composite resin, placed on the treated dentin surface and light cured for 40 see, from three sides, All specimens were stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24 hours. The shear bond strengths were measured using a universal testing machine(AGS-1000 4D, Japan) at a crosshead speed of 5mm/min. An one-way ANOVA and LSD test were used for statistical analysis of the data. For SEM evaluation, seven specimens were made and sectioned. Representive postfracture and seven specimens were mounted on brass stubs, sputter-coated with gold and observed under SEM. The results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of experimental A group which adhesive were applied to dentin with agitation was higher than that of experimental N-A group (continuous application), and there was significant difference between two groups (p<0.01). 2. The interface between composite and dentin according to different application methods showed close adaptation in experimental A group and showed tinny gap in experimental N-A group. 3. The shear bond strength accoding to various air drying duration was the lowest value(7.57${\pm}$2.60 MPa) in experimental 1 group, so there was significant difference between experimental 1 group and other four groups (p<0.05). But there was no significant difference of shear bond strength between four groups (p>0.05). 4. The interface between composite and dentin according to various air drying duration showed close adaptation in control group and tinny gap in experimental 3 and 4 groups. But experimental 1 and 2 groups showed $30{\mu}$ and 6 - $10{\mu}m$ thick gaps, respectively.

Infrared Assisted Freeze-Drying (IRAFD) to Produce Shelf-Stable Insect Food from Protaetia brevitarsis (White-Spotted Flower Chafer) Larva

  • In this study, the potential of infrared assisted freeze-drying (IRAFD) was tested for the production of shelf-stable edible insects: Protaetia brevitarsis larva (larva of white-spotted flower chafer). The IRAFD system was customized using an infrared lamp, K-type thermocouple, controller, and data acquisition system. The infrared lamp provided the sublimation energy for rapid freeze-drying (FD). The IRAFD conditions were continuous IRAFD-5.0 kW/㎡ and IRAFD-5.0 kW/㎡ at different weight reduction (WR) (10%, 20%, and 30%). The continuous IRAFD reduced the drying time to 247 min compared to the 2,833 min duration of FD (p<0.05). The electrical energy could be reduced by more than 90% through infrared radiation during FD (p<0.05). The Page model resulted in the best prediction among the tested drying kinetic models. In terms of quality, IRAFD showed significantly lower hardness, chewiness, and higher protein levels than hot air drying and FD (p<0.05). IRAFD better preserved the glutamic acid (6.30-7.29 g/100 g) and proline (3.84-5.54 g/100 g). The external product appearance after IRAFD exhibited more air pockets and volume expansion, which might result in a good consumer appeal. In conclusion, this study reports the potential of IRAFD in producing shelf-stable and value-added edible insects.

건조방법을 달리한 노란 파프리카의 품질특성 변화 (Change in quality characteristics of yellow paprika according to drying methods)

  • 본 연구는 노란 파프리카의 건조 방법을 달리하여 저장기간에 따른 품질특성 변화를 연구하고, 노란 파프리카의 다양한 가공식품개발을 위한 기초자료로 이용하고자 하였다. 건조 파프리카의 수분함량은 FDP에서 저장 1일 차에서 11.19%이었고, 저장 15일 차에는 18.19%으로 저장기간이 길어질수록 수분함량의 증가폭이 적었다. pH 변화는 저장기간에 따라 약 pH 5 정도로 변화가 크게 없었으며, 당도 변화에서는 FDP에서 저장기간이 길어질수록 당도는 다소 높아짐을 보였다. 산도 변화에서는 FDP > CADP > HADP 순으로 저장기간이 길어질수록 모든 군에서 산도는 증가함을 보였으며 HADP에서 산도의 증가폭이 적게 나타났다. 색도 변화에서는 명도 L 값은 파프리카 외피와 내피에서 저장기간이 길어질수록 감소함을 보였으며, FDP에서 L 값이 더 높았다. a 값은 건조 파프리카 외피와 내피의 저장기간에 따른 차이가 크게 없었으며, b 값은 FDP의 외피와 내피에서 저장기간이 길어질수록 높았다. 물성측정 변화는 강도와 경도, 씹힘성, 깨짐성은 건조 파프리카 모든 군에서 저장기간이 길어질수록 감소함을 보였으며, FDP에서 높았다. 총 균수 변화는 HADP에서 저장 1일 차에 4.90 log CFU/mL으로 가장 낮았고, 저장기간이 길어질수록 증가하였으나 다른 파프리카 군에 비해 낮았다. 따라서 건조방법에 따른 노란 파프리카의 품질특성 연구는 건조된 노란 파프리카를 이용한 가공식품 및 건강식품의 개발에 기초자료가 될 것으로 생각된다.

동결건조 공정에서 Tert-butyl alcohol 기공형성제가 텅스텐 다공체의 기공구조에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Tert-Butyl Alcohol Template on the Pore Structure of Porous Tungsten in Freeze Drying Process)

  • The effect of tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) as a freezing solvent on the pore structure of a porous tungsten body prepared by freeze-drying is analyzed. TBA slurries with a WO3 content of 10 vol% are prepared by mixing with a small amount of dispersant and binder at 30℃. The slurries are frozen at -25℃, and pores are formed in the frozen specimens by the sublimation of TBA during drying in air. After hydrogen reduction at 800℃ and sintering at 1000℃, the green body of WO3 is completely converted to porous W with various pore structures. Directional pores from the center of the specimen to the outside are observed in the sintered bodies because of the columnar growth of TBA. A decrease in pore directionality and porosity is observed in the specimens prepared by long-duration drying and sintering. The change in pore structure is explained by the growth of the freezing solvent and densification.

풍화계열 사면의 불포화 함수특성곡선 이력이 강우 침투에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Hysteresis on Soil-Water Characteristic Curve in Weathered Granite and Gneiss Soil Slopes during Rainfall Infiltration)

  • Shallow failures of slopes in weathered soils are caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. These failures are mainly triggered by the deepening of the wetting band accompanied by a decrease in suction induced by the water infiltration. In this paper, hysteresis on soil-water characteristic curve(SWCC) of granite and gneiss weathered soils are investigated using transient flow analysis respectively. Each case was subjected to artificial rainfall intensities and time duration depending on the laboratory-based drying and wetting processes. The results show that the unsaturated seepage on weathered slopes are very much affected by the initial suction of soils and unsaturated permeability of the soils. In addition, a granite weathered soil has a lower air-entry value, residual matric suction, and wetting front suction and less hysteresis loop than a gneiss weathered soil.

온도에 따른 암석시편의 건조무게 특이점 분석 (Dry Weight Singularity Analysis of Rock Specimen Depending on Temperature)

  • 한국산업표준(KS F)에는 건조된 흙과 암석의 무게를 측정하는 다양한 규정들이 있다. 그러나, 110±5℃ 또는 105±5℃로 건조 후 공기 중에서 건조무게를 측정하면 측정시간이 지속됨에 따라 무게가 감소 후 증가하는 무게 특이점이 나타난다. 본 연구에서는 울릉도 현무암질 암석을 40~110℃로 노건조 하였고, 0.0001g(0.1mg) 감도의 전자저울에 무게를 측정하여 무게 특이점을 찾았고, 나타난 무게 특이점을 이용하여 건조무게를 쉽게 결정할 수 있는 방법을 제시하였다. 온도에 따른 암석시편의 특이점을 다양하게 분석한 결과, 특이점은 40~110℃의 온도구간에서 모두 나타났고 가열온도가 높을수록 특이점의 무게가 작게 나타났다. 특별히, 무게 특이점이 지속되는 현상이 나타났고, 가열온도가 높을수록 특이점의 지속시간이 짧게 나타났다. 대류측정 실험의 결과에 의하면 특이점의 발생 원인은 가열된 암석이 공기와의 접촉에 의해 발생된 대류현상이 원인이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 노건조된 암석의 무게 감소는 대류발생으로 인한 영향이 공기 중 수분 흡수의 영향보다 우세할 때 발생된다. 반대로 암석의 무게 증가는 공기 중 수분 흡수의 영향이 대류발생으로 인한 영향보다 우세할 때 발생된다.

絹織物 Wash and Wear 加工硏究 (Studies on Silk Textile Wash and Wear Finishing)

  • 絹織物加工을 實需要者의 利用度를 增加시키기 爲해 多年間 여러 사람에 의하여 硏究되어 왔으나 天然織維이기 때문에 加工方式으로 性質을 變化시키기는 어려워서 滿足스러운 精度로 이루어지지 못하고 있는 實情에 있다. 絹織物加工은 勿論 그 缺點을 補强하는 同時에 商品的價値도 向上시키는데 目的이 있는데 때로는 有名商標가 品質以上으로 販賣를 左右하는 例도 많다. 特히 絹制品은 歡迎을 받지 못하고 있는 實情에 있다. 이러한 問題點을 解決하기 爲해 筆者는 多年間 硏究를 持績하여 왔든바 一般絹織物의 浸潤後 乾燥時間보다 半減된 時間에 乾燥되는 所謂 Wash and Wear絹加工方法의 開發을 하기에 이르렀다. 그리고 그 加工費用이 極히 經濟性인 탓으로 아무런 부담감 없이 加工處理할 수 있는 特徵을 갖이고 있었다. 1. 繭絲는 吐絲營繭曲線이 S字型으로 되어 있어 浸潤時에는 原狀復舊의 性質이 있어 屈曲狀態를 이룩하게 되어 本加工絹織物이 Wash and Wear이기는 하나 가벼운 다림질이 必要하였다. 2. 이러한 加工은 絹絲蛋白質의 變性을 加工過程에서 1% D.I.S.溶液에 3時間 處理하여 變性誘發시킴으로서 可能하였다. 3. 加工絹의 防皺度, 剛乾度를 洗濯回數를 反復하면서 調査하여 본 結果 未處理絹보다 惡化되지 않았다. 4. 未加工絹도 水洗, 乾燥를 反復하게되면 스스로 變性되는 事實을 알았다. 5. 處理絹과 未處理絹의 强力伸度面의 差異가 없었다.

Biodrying of municipal solid waste under different ventilation periods

  • Biodrying is a pre-treatment method that applies biological and mechanical concepts to drying solid waste. In Malaysia, municipal solid waste (MSW) is unseparated and contains a high level of moisture, making the use of technology such as solid waste burning unsuitable and harmful. MSW containing organic material can be processed naturally until the moisture content of the waste is reduced. This study on MSW biodrying was carried out on a laboratory scale to measure the percent moisture content reduction and to monitor temperature patterns under different ventilation periods. This work was conducted using five biodrying reactors volumes of 50 liters each. Reactors were ventilated for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min every 3 h, with a 3 bar air supply. The duration of this process was 14 days for all samples. The results showed that the optimum ventilation time was 10 min, with an 81.84% reduction in moisture content, and that it required almost half of the electricity cost required for the 20 and 30 min ventilations.
