  • Seasonal semi-greenhouse type solar-drying of 2.5cm-and 5.0cm-thick lumber of Quercus aliena Blume and Quercus variailis Blume was carried out to investigate the possibility of solar-drying of wood and to decide the active solar-drying period in Korea. In the active solar-drying period obtained solar-dehumidification, semi-greenhouse type solar-, air- and kiln-drying of 2.5cm -thick lumber of oaks were carried out to analyze drying-rates. -defects, and -yield in each drying-method and to calculate daily total absorbed solar-radiation the solar dryers. The energy balance equations were set up, considering all the energy requirements, to analyze the heat efficiencies of semi-greenhouse type solar and solar-dehumidification-dryer. In a seasonal drying the drying rate of semi-greenhouse type solar-dryer was highest in summer, and greater in fall, spring, and winter in order. Solar-drying time was 45% in summer to 50% in winter of the air-drying rime, and more serious drying-defects occurred in air-drying than in solar-drying. In the active solar-drying period. April, May, and June, the average drying rate in solar-dehumidification-drying was 1.0%/day and greater than 0.8%/day in semi-greenhouse type solar-drying. In solar-dehumidification-drying the time required to dry lumber to 10% moisture content was less than 60 days, and solar-dehumidification-drying showed the highest drying-yield, 65.01%, than the other drying methods. The daily total absorbed solar radiations were 8.51MJ on the roof collector and 6.22 MJ on the south wall collector. In the energy blance 69.48% of total energy input was lost by heat conduction through walls, roof. and floor 11.68% by heat leakage, 0.33% by heating the internal structures of the solar-dryer and 5.38% by air-venting. Therefore the heat efficiency of semi-greenhouse type solar-dryer 13.13%, was lower than that of solar-dehumidification-dryer, 14.04%. Solar-drying of lumber in Korea showed the possibility to reduce the air-drying-time in every season and the efficiency of solar-dehumidification drying was higher than that of semi-greenhouse type solar-drying.

Comparisons of Rates of Air Drying and Shed Drying for Chestnut and Paulownia Soundboards (밤나무와 오동나무 향판용재(響板用材)의 옥외(屋外) 옥내(屋內) 천연건조(天然乾燥) 속도(速度)의 비교(比較))

  • Chestnut and paulownia boards for the traditional musical instruments were air dried to compare moisture contents(MC), drying rates and drying times between the air drying for 70 days in a yard and the shed drying for 150 days in a closed shed when piled in early June. An average final MC and the drying rate of chestnut boards were 20.6 percent and 0.78%/day for the air drying, and 16.6 percent and 0.44%/day for the shed drying. An average final MC and the drying rate of paulownia boards were 16.7 percent and 1.53%/day for the air drying, and 13.5 percent and 0.77%/day for the shed drying. Drying rates of air-dried boards were nearly twice as high as those of shed-dried boards for both species. Air drying rates of chestnut and paulownia boards were very high and exhibited falling drying rate above the fiber saturation point(30%), and then decreased irregularly. However, shed drying rates of chestnut and paulownia boards were high and exhibited falling drying rate above 55 percent MC for chestnut boards and above 80 percent MC for paulownia boards, and then decreased irregularly.

Drying Quality Characteristics of Shiitake Mushroom by Heat Pump Hot-air Dryer (열펌프 열풍건조기를 이용한 표고버섯의 건조 품질특성)

  • Quality characteristics of Shiitake mushroom using two types of dryers, energy-efficient heat pump hot-air dryer and electric heater hot-air dryer were compared. Energy consumed during drying by heat pump hot-air dryer and electric heater hot-air dryer were 22.8 kWh and 28.9 kWh, respectively. Total polyphenol content of heat pump hot-air dryer and electric heater hot-air dryer after drying were $290.55{\pm}10.56ppm$ and $192.99{\pm}6.53ppm$, respectively. No differences were observed between dryers in reconstitution rate and browning ratio after drying. Also, there were no differences between dryers in color value and ${\Delta}E$ value after drying. Shiitake mushroom drying at $45^{\circ}C$ by heat pump hot-air dryer was proved to be more efficient in energy consumption than by electric heater hot-air dryer.

Effect of moisture and drying time on the bond strength of the one-step self-etching adhesive system

  • Objectives: To investigate the effect of dentin moisture degree and air-drying time on dentin-bond strength of two different one-step self-etching adhesive systems. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four human third molars were used for microtensile bond strength testing of G-Bond and Clearfil $S^3$ Bond. The dentin surface was either blot-dried or air-dried before applying these adhesive agents. After application of the adhesive agent, three different air drying times were evaluated: 1, 5, and 10 sec. Composite resin was build up to 4 mm thickness and light cured for 40 sec with 2 separate layers. Then the tooth was sectioned and trimmed to measure the microtensile bond strength using a universal testing machine. The measured bond strengths were analyzed with three-way ANOVA and regression analysis was done (p = 0.05). Results: All three factors, materials, dentin wetness and air drying time, showed significant effect on the microtensile bond strength. Clearfil $S^3$ Bond, dry dentin surface and 10 sec air drying time showed higher bond strength. Conclusions: Within the limitation of this experiment, air drying time after the application of the one-step self-etching adhesive agent was the most significant factor affecting the bond strength, followed by the material difference and dentin moisture before applying the adhesive agent.

Comparison of Air-Drying Process in Four Seasons for Some Softwood Lumbers (침엽수(針葉樹) 제재(製材)의 4계절별(季節別) 천연건조(天然乾燥) 과정(過程)의 비교(比較))

  • Several thick board and dimension lumbers of Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis), Dahurian larch(Larix gmelini) and radiata pine(Pinus radiata) air-dried in four different seasons to compare air-drying process. Patterns of air-drying curves were influenced by climatological conditions and limber thickness. The initial drying rates of summer were the highest, followed those of fall, spring and winter. The drying times to equilibrium moisture contents for four seasons were nearly the same except for winter. However, the drying time for winter required twice more time than the other seasons. The drying time of dimension lumbers required 1.3 times more than boards. The final moisture contents were lowest during spring, highest during winter and similar between summer and fall.

Quality Characteristics of Grape Pomace with Different Drying Methods (건조방법에 따른 포도 가공부산물의 품질특성)

  • Improvement in the utilization of grape pomace, antioxidant activities and antioxidant compounds of grape pomace was analyzed to clarify the influence of drying method such as $80^{\circ}C$ hot air and freeze ($-70^{\circ}C$) drying process. For proximate composition, crude protein and fat contents of hot air drying sample were higher than freeze drying sample. The lightness and redness values of freeze drying sample were higher than hot air drying sample, but yellowness of hot air drying sample was higher. The contents of total polyphenols and anthocyanins were higher in freeze drying sample. DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS scavenging activity of freeze drying sample were higher than hot air drying sample. The reducing power and FRAP value of hot air drying sample was higher than freeze drying sample. The result indicated that freeze drying method is slightly better than hot air drying method for antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activity.

  • In this study, the efficiency of treatment of moisture and organic matter in food waste was analyzed according to the air blast volume and preheating using the bio-drying method. Te mount of air blast volume and preheating were determined by the evaluation of temperature and CO2 during food waste treatment using the bio-drying method. As a results, the increase in the air blast volume increased the moisture removal efficiency and removal rate, but, lowered the temperature inside the bio-drying by the decease in microbial activity. In order to maintain the activity of microorganisms, it was estimated that it was necessary to inject an appropriate air blast rate according th the properties of the food waste. In this study, the injection of air blast volume at 15L/min was optimal. It was evaluated that the organic matter and water removal rates according to the presence or absence of air preheating, the organic matter removal rate and water removal rate increased by 3-5% when air preheating was not performed. Also, there was no internal aggregation caused by the generation of condensate inside the bio-drying. Therefore, for effective bio-drying of food waste, it is necessary to maintain an appropriate air blast volume to maintain microbial activity, and it is considered that injection through preheating of air is required.

  • Drying characteristics of green onion and onion during fluidized and fixed bed drying were investigated and compared. Sliced peen onion and onion were dried at drying air temperature of 45, 55, and $65^{\circ}C$. Drying air velocity during fluidized bed drying was adjusted with drying time at each drying temperature. Drying time to reach a given final moisture content was shorten in fluidized bed drying than in fixed bed drying - for drying temperature of 45, 55, and $65^{\circ}C$, the differences were 60, 60, and 50 min for green onion and 360, 180, and 60 min for onion. Drying constant (K) was greatly affected by drying method and drying temperature. Terminal velocity under fluidized bed drying was decreased exponentially for green onion and linearly (or onion with increase of drying temperature. Also, terminal velocity had linear relationship with moisture content for both green onion and onion.

Moisture Content Change of Korean Red Pine Logs During Air Drying: I. Effective Air Drying Days in Major Regions in Korea (소나무 원목의 천연건조 중 함수율 변화: I. 국내 주요지역의 유효천연건조일수 조사)

  • Air drying depends on species, density, dimension of wood, the geographical location of the air drying yard, and the meteorological factors of air drying site. If there are four seasons with large difference in temperature and humidity like in Korea, the research of the meteorological factors is required in air drying site. In this study, effective air drying days (EADD) of 24 regions in Korea were calculated by using the average monthly temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. The EADD in 24 regions in Korea was ranged from 239 days to 291 days, with an average 265 days. This result is 5 days increased compared to the average of EADD calculated using the meteorological factors from 1955 to 1984. The results of multiple regression analysis on the EADD and meteorological factors showed that EADD affected in the order of temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. As a result of dividing Korea into 4 zones of EADD, the zones of EADD were moved northward compared to previous study due to global warming. As basic data for predicting the moisture content (MC) distribution of Korean red pine logs during air drying conducted in Seoul, the average monthly temperature, relative humidity and wind speed for three years from 2016 to 2018 were presented, and the corresponding changes of the equilibrium MC were analyzed.

Quality characteristics of Aronia melanocarpa by different drying method (건조방법에 따른 아로니아의 품질특성)

  • In this study, the quality characteristics of different drying methods of Aronia melanocarpa, which contains large amounts of bioactive substances, were investigated for the improvement of their practical use. During the drying period, the weight reduction was the highest with vacuum freeze drying (81.6%). The water content was reduced to the maximum level when vacuum freeze-drying was used. With regard to the color value measurement results, there were no significant differences in the $L^*$ value. Values of $a^*$ and $b^*$ were increased in vacuum freeze drying and cold air drying, but decreased in hot air drying. The hardness was increased dramatically after 36 hours of hot air drying, while with cold air drying, it increased slowly until 132 hr and increased rapidly after 132 hr. The dried yield was the highest with cold air drying (24.2%). As for the general component analysis results of Aronia melanocarpa, the moisture content was the lowest, and the crude protein and crude fat contents were the highest with vacuum freeze drying. No difference in pH value was shown among the dried Aronia melanocarpa obtained from the different drying methods, but the sugar content was the highest with vacuum freeze drying. The mineral content was the highest with cold air drying, and K, Ca, Mg, and Na were the major minerals. The free sugar content of dried Aronia melanocarpa was found to be 5.92~20.59 g/100 g, and the highest free sugar content was found with vaccum freeze drying.
