  • Objective: Calving ease (CE) is a complex reproductive trait of economic importance in dairy cattle. This study was aimed to investigate the genetic merits of CE for Holsteins in Korea. Methods: A total of 297,614 field records of CE, from 2000 to 2015, from first parity Holstein heifers were recorded initially. After necessary data pruning such as age at first calving (18 to 42 mo), gestation length, and presence of sire information, final datasets for CE consisted of 147,526 and 132,080 records for service sire calving ease (SCE) and daughter calving ease (DCE) evaluations, respectively. The CE categories were ordered and scores ranged from CE1 to CE5 (CE1, easy; CE2, slight assistance; CE3, moderate assistance; CE4, difficult calving; CE5, extreme difficulty calving). A linear transformation of CE score was obtained on each category using Snell procedure, and a scaling factor was applied to attain the spread between 0 (CE5) and 100% (CE1). A sire-maternal grandsire model analysis was performed using ASREML 3.0 software package. Results: The estimated direct heritability ($h^2$) from SCE and DCE evaluations were $0.11{\pm}0.01$ and $0.08{\pm}0.01$, respectively. Maternal $h^2$ estimates were $0.05{\pm}0.02$ and $0.04{\pm}0.01$ from SCE and DCE approaches, respectively. Estimates of genetic correlations between direct and maternal genetic components were $-0.68{\pm}0.09$ (SCE) and $-0.71{\pm}0.09$ (DCE). The average direct genetic effect increased over time, whereas average maternal effect was low and consistent. The estimated direct predicted transmitting ability (PTA) was desirable and increasing over time, but the maternal PTA was undesirable and decreasing. Conclusion: The evidence on sufficient genetic variances in this study could reflect a possible selection improvement over time regarding ease of calving. It is expected that the estimated genetic parameters could be a valuable resource to formulate sire selection and breeding plans which would be directed towards the reduction of calving difficulty in Korean Holsteins.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of sonic and manual toothbrushes using the $L{\ddot{o}}e$ and Silness plaque index (PI). This was an examiner-blind, randomized study with a cross-over design. A total of 34 children (17 males and 17 females) aged 3-6 years were included. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: one group used the sonic brush for two weeks before using the manual brush for two weeks, while the other group used the manual brush for two weeks followed by the sonic brush. During each dental visit, plaque indices were recorded and compared to baseline. The results were analyzed using a paired t-test or Pearson correlation test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Thirty children (mean age 4.37 years) complied with the protocol and completed the study. The PI score was 0.09 lower compared to baseline after using a manual toothbrush and 0.26 lower after using the sonic brush. The reduction was statistically significantly greater in the sonic group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the sonic toothbrush is more effective for reducing plaque than a manual toothbrush.

  • Debridement is a crucial component of wound management. Recent technologies such as hydrosurgery (Versajet), ultrasound therapy (the MIST therapy device), or plasma-mediated bipolar radio-frequency ablation therapy (Coblation) seem to represent interesting alternatives for wound debridement. The purpose of this systematic review was to describe, evaluate, and compare these three recently developed methods for the management of chronic wounds. In January 2016, an electronic database search was conducted of MEDLINE, PubMed Central, and Embase for articles concerning these three innovative methods for the management of chronic wounds. A total of 389 references were identified by our search strategy, and 15 articles were included. We extracted data regarding the number and age of patients, indications, operating time, number of procedures, costs, wound healing time, decrease in exudation, perioperative blood loss, bacterial load, and the occurrence of complications. The 15 articles included studies that involved 563 patients who underwent hydrosurgery (7 studies), ultrasound therapy (6 studies), or Coblation (2 studies). Six randomized controlled trials were included that compared the use of a scalpel or curette to hydrosurgery (2 studies) or ultrasound therapy (6 studies). Hydrosurgery, in addition to being a very precise and selective tool, allows significantly faster debridement. Ultrasound therapy provides a significant reduction of exudation, and improves the wound healing time. No comparative study dedicated to Coblation was identified. Despite the obvious clinical interest of the topic, our review of the current literature revealed a lack of prospective randomized studies comparing these devices with each other or with standard techniques, particularly for Coblation and hydrosurgery.

  • Background: The Kirschner wire (K-wire) technique allows stable fixation of bone fragments without periosteal dissection, which often lead to bone segment scattering and loss. The authors used the K-wire fixation to simplify the treatment of laborious comminuted zygomatic bone fracture and report outcomes following the operation. Methods: A single-institution retrospective review was performed for all patients with comminuted zygomatic bone fractures between January 2010 and December 2013. In each patient, the zygoma was reduced and fixed with K-wire, which was drilled from the cheek bone and into the contralateral nasal cavity. For severely displaced fractures, the zygomaticofrontal suture was first fixated with a microplate and the K-wire was used to increase the stability of fixation. Each wire was removed approximately 4 weeks after surgery. Surgical outcomes were evaluated for malar eminence, cheek symmetry, K-wire site scar, and complications (based on a 4-point scale from 0 to 3, where 0 point is 'poor' and 3 points is 'excellent'). Results: The review identified 25 patients meeting inclusion criteria (21 men and 4 women). The mean age was 52 years (range, 15-73 years). The mean follow up duration was 6.2 months. The mean operation time was 21 minutes for K-wire alone (n=7) and 52 minutes for K-wire and plate fixation (n=18). Patients who had received K-wire only fixation had severe underlying diseases or accompanying injuries. The mean postoperative evaluation scores were 2.8 for malar contour and 2.7 for K-wire site scars. The mean patient satisfaction was 2.7. There was one case of inflammation due to the K-wire. Conclusion: The use of K-wire technique was associated with high patient satisfaction in our review. K-wire fixation technique is useful in patient who require reduction of zygomatic bone fractures in a short operating time.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze the correlation between incidence of mandibular angle fracture and eruption state of mandibular third molar using clinical and radiographic findings. Materials and Methods: The data were obtained from the clinical and radiographic records of 205 patients who visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chonbuk National University Hospital for treatment of the mandibular fracture. Panoramic radiographies were taken for radiographic examination and the mandibular third molars were classified according to age, gender, position and eruption state. Data were analyzed by a chi-square statistics. Results: In this study, the incidence of mandibular angle fracture had a tendency to be greater when a mandibular third molar was present(p>0.05), but there was not a statistically significant difference. Of the 255 cases with a mandibular third molar, 67 had an angle fractures. Of the 155 cases without a mandibular third molar, 138 had not angle fracture. And the incidence of mandibular angle fracture was high at class BII(by Pell & Gregory system)(p<0.05). Conclusion: Although there was not a statistically significant difference, mandibular third molar was more susceptible to mandibular angle fracture. When the reduction of mandibular angle fracture, it was recommended that mandibular third molar should be extracted especially in case of pericoronitis, periodontitis and other infections.

  • Authigenic siderite grains, ranging 100 to 250-${\mu}$m in diameter, are abundant in an about 8,600-year-old sediment layer in Namyang Bay, west coast of Korea. The siderites exhibit the aggregated spherulitic morphology with well-developed rhombs on the grain surfaces. They consist mostly of FeCO$_3$ (average, 65%) and MnCO$_3$ (average, 22%) with low Mg/Ca ratio (less than 0.4) in their bulk composition. A series of compositional ternary discrimination diagrams, together with high Mn and low Mg contents, show that only meteoric porewater was involved in siderite precipitation, assuming that depositional environment of host sediment is an organic-rich freshwater system. Considering a series of results such as radiocarbon age, authigenic Mn-rich siderite and lithological features, siderite-hosting sediment (unit Tl) is interpreted as freshwater swamp or bog deposition, infilling the topographic depressions that locally existed before the formation of mid-to-late Holocene tidal deposits. Center-to-margin compositional variation within individual grain is very systematic; Mn and Ca decrease towards the margin of a siderite grain, while Fe and Mg increase. It suggests that the spherulitic siderites were precipitated in this sedimentary layer in a series during the early diagenesis of MnOx-FeOx reduction under steady-state.

  • One of the central components of periodontal therapy is the improvement of esthetics. The presence and appearance of interdental papillae plays an important role of periodontal esthetics. The aim of the present study was to investigate how immediate provisional restoration preserve the shape of interdental papilla around the extraction socket and the width of bucco-lingual of gingiva. Another aim was to investigate the change in the interdental papilla and the amount of vertical bone fill of a extraction socket in relation to the interdental alveolar bone levels adjacent the alveolar socket. A total of 19 patients (11 male, 8 female, mean age of 50.57${\pm}$8.16), who visited the Department of Periodontology, Pusan National University and had more than one anterior tooth scheduled to be extracted due to an advanced periodontal disease were included in the present study. After initial periodontal therapy, the extracted teeth were reshaped of the root and placed into the socket followed by splinting with adjacent teeth with self-curing resin. The width of hucco-lingual of gingiva and interdental papilla height were measured at baseline, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 month and the periapical radiographic examination were taken at baseline, 6 and 12month following the extraction. The amount of vertical bone fill in the extraction socket were calculated. At 12 months following the extraction, the changes in mesial and distal interdental papilla and the width of bucco-lingual showed -1.06${\pm}$0.48mm, -0.844${\pm}$0.50mm, -1.50${\pm}$0.96m, relatively. The positional change in the interproximal papillae was significantly associated with the interdental bone level adjacent to the extraction socket(p=0.028). The higher the interproximal bone level adjacent the extraction socket, the greater the amount of bone fill in the extraction socket(p<0.001). In conclusion, it was thought that immediate provisional restoration could minimize the loss of the width of bucco-lingual and interproximal papillae around the extraction socket. In addition, the higher the interproximal bone level adjacent the extraction socket, the greater the amount of bone fill and the smaller the reduction of papillary height around the extraction socket.

  • Objectives: Major depression is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. One possible explanation for this association is that major depression influences autonomic neurocardiac regulation. However, previous studies on the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and major depression have revealed conflicting results. The purpose of this study is to clarify that major depressive patients compared to healthy controls show a reduction in HRV as an expression of reduced modulation of vagal activity to the heart. Methods: According to DSM-IV, the time and frequency domain HRV indices (5-min resting study) of 30 patients with major depressive disorder were compared with those of 30 healthy controls. Standardized HRV tests enable quantitative estimation of autonomic nervous system function. Results: After controlling for age and gender, subjects with major depression showed a higher heart rate and significantly lower modulation of cardiovagal activity compared to controls. The total power (TP) band, very low frequency (VLF: 0.003-0.04 Hz) band, low frequency (LF: 0.04-0.15 Hz) band, and high frequency (HF: 0.15-0.4 Hz) band were significantly reduced in subjects with major depression compared to control subjects. Conclusion: Patients with major depression may suffer from functional disturbances in the interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic systems.

  • Backgrounds: The pathway of the sural nerve (SN) is variable, but usually divided into medial and lateral sural branches joining the posterior tibial nerve (PTN) and the peroneal nerve (PN). The sural nerve may be affected by PN palsy. The frequency or the severity of SN involvement in peroneal palsy is not known. The purpose of the study is to investigate the frequency and the severity of the SN involvement by the peroneal nerve palsy. Methods: Total 85 patients were included with peroneal palsy. Amplitudes of distal peroneal, sural, and superficial peroneal nerves (SPN) were compared between normal and paralyzed sides. The frequency and severity of SN involvement by peroneal palsy were investigated. Results: Mean age was $48.4{\pm}17.4$ years old at the time of the test. Peroneal palsy was right side in 32, left in 38, and bilateral in 15 patients. Mean amplitudes of affected distal PN, SPN, and SN were $1.51{\pm}1.64mV$, $3.50{\pm}4.86{\mu}V$, and $10.42{\pm}6.59{\mu}V$ in right side, and $1.19{\pm}1.57mV$, $4.38{\pm}5.67{\mu}V$, and $11.06{\pm}6.87{\mu}V$ in left side, respectively. Sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude of the SN in the affected side was average $73.7{\pm}33.1%$ of normal, which was significantly lower than that in the normal side(p<0.01). The decrease of the sural SNAP amplitude was more than 15% in 39 out of 70 patients with unilateral peroneal palsy. Peroneal compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude was not correlated with the amplitude of the sural SNAP. By complete peroneal palsy, SN SNAP amplitude was decreased to 4% of SNAP and $57.7{\pm}31.8%$ of that in normal side. Conclusions: PN injury without PTN involvement may induce reduction of sural SNAP amplitude. Because of the anatomic variation of SN, the electrophysiological findings are variable. It should be considered to interpret the location of the PN lesion.
