  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the sociodemographic and health characteristics on the out-of-pocket health spending of the individuals aged 20 and older in Korea. Methods : We used the data from the 2001 National Public Health and Nutrition Survey. The final sample size was 26,154 persons. Multiple linear regression models were used according to the age groups, that is, one model was used for those people under the age of sixty-five and the other was used for those people aged sixty-five and older. In these analyses, the expenditures were transformed to a logarithmic scale to reduce the skewness of the results. Results : Out-of-pocket health expenditures for those people under the age of 65 averaged 14,800 won per month, whereas expenditures for those people aged 65 and older averaged 27,200 won per month. In the regression analysis, the insurance type, resident area, self-reported health status, acute or chronic condition and bed-disability days were the statistically significant determinants for both age groups. Gender and age were statistically significant determinants only for the non-elderly. Conclusions : The findings from this study show that the mean out-of-pocket health expenditures varied according to the age groups and also several diverse characteristics. Thus, policymakers should consider the out-of-pocket health expenditure differential between the elderly and non-elderly persons. Improvement of the insurance coverage for the economically vulnerable subgroups that were identified in this study should be carefully considered. In addition, it is necessary to assess the impact of out-of-pocket spending on the peoples' health care utilization.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify caregivers of the elderly, the pattern of the caregivers' caring behaviors, and the cultural principles of patterns of caring behaviors practiced in a Korean minority community, Yanbian. To clarify these, an ethnographic approach was used. The fieldwork for this study was conducted from Aug. 24, 1993 to May 20, 1994. The informants were 16 natives, age 60 or more, who were members of a large family of three generations. The results of the study are as follows. The caregivers for the elderly were family, kinship and community groups. Family caregivers for the elderly were spouses, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sons of former wives, sons of former husbands, adopted sons. daughters and sons-in-law. The elderly had caregivers who were part of the kinship group. Three community groups provided care for the elderly. The three community groups were Dokbozo. a formal large organization for the elderly. the same age group as an informal small meeting for the elderly, and other community younger groups. The findings of this study indicated that family caregivers, especially spouses and sons, are the significant others of the elderly, and comminuty groups are better caring groups than kinship relatives. This study identified forty-three different kind of caring behaviors. They were divided into fifteen behavior patterns. These patterns integrated into five categories : soo-bal(¼?¹ß), protecting, respect, support, jung(?×). For physical comfort, soo-bal and protecting were conducted. For the comfort of mind, respect. support, and jung were conducted. The comfort of mind are better than physical comfort for the elderly. Cultural principles of caring behaviors were group membership, reciprocity, and harmony. But there was no hierarchy priciple. And these three principles provide best caring together at the same time. This study provides significant data for nursing research, theory and practice.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the three-dimensional hand-related dimensions of elderly women aged 70 to 84 years and to characterize them to develop safety gloves for dementia patients. The 3D data from the 8th Human Size Survey of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Size Korea, were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program. The straight thumb length was longer in elderly women aged 70-74 than in those aged 80-84. To analyze the hand type of elderly women, four factors were categorized: hand and finger horizontal factor, hand vertical factor, finger digit V thickness factor, and finger length factor. Elderly women's hand types were categorized as 'long hands and thin fingers', 'thick hands with long fingers', and 'short hands and thick little fingers'. Elderly women aged 70-74 years and 80-84 years were analyzed as having the most 'long hands and thin fingers' type, while older women aged 75-79 years were analyzed as having the most 'thick hands and long fingers' type. It is known that the fingers get thicker and the size of hands increase as age advances, but by the age 80, there is a change in the size of hands again. In future research, it would be worth expanding to other age groups to explore differences between age groups and to develop safety gloves for real-world dementia patients based on the hand types analyzed.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the perception of dental implant insurance supply and demand for the elderly living in Hongseong-gun and Chungcheongnam-do, as well as the selection criteria regarding dental clinics for dental implant treatment to collect basic data for improving the oral health of the elderly population. Methods: Participants living in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do who were at least 55 years old from November 2020 to March 2021 were included in this study. The chi-square test was performed to examine the age-specific perception of insurance-covered dental implants (p<0.05). Results: The age group that was the most interested in implants was the 70s age group, and the difference between this age group and the other age groups was statistically significant. Those in their 70's, 80's, and 90's or older paid about 600,000 won including dental implants covered by insurance, and there was a significant difference (p<0.05). Those in their 60s, 70s, and 80s estimated the highest value of implants covered by insurance as two and showed a significant difference (p<0.05). The awareness of the dental implant insurance by age showed that all age groups, except for the ≥90 years age group, considered the insurance to be mediocre mostly due to the large co-payment (p<0.05). Conclusion: There were differences by age in the awareness of dental implant insurance, co-payments, number of applications, and insurance coverage. The perceptions on dental implant insurance by age showed that all age groups except for those over 90 years and older, they considered the insurance was just mediocre the most.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRIs) were revised in 2020. Due to the rapidly aging Korean population, special consideration was given to reclassify the KDRI age group categories of older adults. This article examines the evidence for modifying the current KDRI age group ranges of older adults (65-74 and ≥ 75 yrs). SUBJECTS/METHODS: We first reviewed the domestic and international data on the elderly, following which we received expert opinions on age classification from the KDRI Advisory Committee. Finally, the 6th and 7th (2013-2017) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data were used to analyze the nutritional intake statuses by considering the age of older adults. RESULTS: According to the review results of domestic and international data and the inputs received from the expert advisory committee, the minimum age considered for the elderly was maintained at 65 yrs. However, the KNHANES data was analyzed to review whether there was a need to subdivide the later periods. Examining the differences in nutrient intakes by age group through the interaction effect term of the piecewise linear regression model revealed the interaction effect was maximum in the groups divided by 65 yrs (50-64 and 65-80), as compared to the groups divided by 70 yrs (50-69 and 70-80) and 75 yrs (50-74 and 75-80). The mean adequacy ratio was calculated per 1 yr of age, and a 3-yr (age) moving average analysis was performed to examine the change in the trends of overall nutrient intake. However, it was challenging to secure a scientific basis for subdivision into age groups in older adults from the results obtained. CONCLUSIONS: This study could not find any scientific evidence for modifying the KDRI age groups for older adults.

  • This study was conducted to examine the relationship between limit of stability and age, height and weight. 83 healthy elderly(male 40, female 43) were measured the limit of stability and demographic characteristics. The results were as follows. 1. Left-right limit of stability was correlated with age in the elderly. 2. Left-right limit of stability was not correlated with the height, weight in the elderly. 3. Anterior-posterior limit of stability was correlated with age. height and weight in the elderly. So it is recommended that high risk groups - more aged people. of elderly should be offered the exercise program for increasing the limit of stability and well-designed studies of proper exercise program for musculoskeletal function and muscle power elevation should be performed.

  • This study focused on comparing the following acoustic changes according to age and sex in adulthood: Fo, Jitter, Shimmer, and NHR. One hundred twenty Korean adults were divided into three age groups (20's, 50's, and 70's) and two sex groups (male and female). The subjects of this study performed three tasks: (1) sustained three vowels; (2) read on paragraph of 'Taking a Walk' (3) explained a picture. The data was analyzed using the MDVP of Multi-Speech. In the parameter of Fo, sex and age were influential factors. In the parameters of Jitter, Shimmer and NHR, the effect of sex and age was different in all three parameters. When the groups organized by sex were analyzed by age, the 20's group showed a statistical difference in all four parameters (Fo, Jitter, Shimmer, and NKR), when compared to the other two age ranges of 50's and 70's. We need to consider our standard parameter for the normal voice in the Korean elderly because the 50's and 70's age normal groups in our study are out of the current range of normal in MDVP.

  • This study was intended to analyze clothing preference images according to the age groups (30's, 40's, 50's and 60's) and to clarify the differences between present clothing preference images and that of the future after 60. The data was collected through a questionnaire and a total of 482 questionnaires on the age groups ranging from 30s through 60s were used in the analysis. As for the present clothing preference images in accordance with age groups, the younger age groups in the range of 30's and 40's presented higher scores in most of these images. But the older age groups in the 50's and 60's had lower scores in most of these images. On the contrary, the older age groups had higher scores than the younger age groups with respect to similar, mature, magnificent, innocent, plump and virtuous images. As for the future clothing preference images after 60 in the elegant, luxurious, graceful, intellectual, chic, urbane, slimy and sociable images, the age groups in the 30's and 40's presented higher scores than the age groups in the 50's and 60's did. However, with respect to the youth-oriented images such as fashionable, innocent, remarkable, cute and vigorous images, the age group in the 60's had a higher score than the age group in the 30's, 40's and 50's did. There were differences between the present clothing preference images and future clothing preference images after 60. The 30's and 40's presented distinctively different clothing preference images in the present and future after 60. Thus, distinct images were pursued in the older age group. The 50s showed closest images to that of the older age group, presenting more conservative inclination in clothing preferences.
