  • The purpose of this study was to estimate occlusal tooth wear and bruxism severity in TMD patients, and evaluate the effectiveness of the present age estimation method by occlusal tooth wear in TMD patients. Takei's age estimation method was applied to 163 subjects(56 controls, 107 TMD patients). The author analyzed the degree of occlusal tooth wear from the difference between estimated age and actual age. The obtained results were as follows: 1. In all age group, occlusal tooth wear in TMD patients is higher than those in asymptomatic controls. In 20's age group, a statistically significant difference was found. 2. In both gender, occlusal tooth wear in TMD patients is higher than those in asymptomatic control. In male, a significant difference was found. 3. Occlusal tooth wear in TMD patients with bruxism is significantly higher than that in control. 4. We found no significant difference in bruxism severity and occlusal tooth wear among the RDC/TMD subgroups. 5. Application of Takei's method would be still useful for age estimation in Korean. In case of age estimation of TMD patients using occlusal tooth wear, evaluation of the bruxism severity and appropriate correction according to age, sex and difference of geographical location should be considered.

  • Background: Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis in children <5 years of age. The first vaccine, RotaShield was developed, but withdrawn because of its association with increased risk of intussusception. Then, RotaTeq and Rotarix were developed. Although in pre-licensure studies, they were not associated with an increased risk of intussusceptions, in recent studies, it has been controversial. Regarding increased risk of intussusception, we studied the difference in the age of intussusception after rotavirus vaccination. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 136 patients diagnosed with intussusception at Yeungnam University Medical Center for 4 years in the pre-vaccination period (group A) and in the post vaccination period (group B). Sex, mean age and age distribution of intussusceptions were compared according to the type of rotavirus vaccine (group B-1, RotaTeq; group B-2, Rotarix). Results: The median ages of group A and group B were $18.8{\pm}19.6months$ and $15.5{\pm}10.2months$, with no significant differences (p=0.23). The median ages of group B-1 and group B-2 were $15.3{\pm}9.3months$ and $15.6{\pm}10.8months$, with no significant differences (p=0.91). And No significant difference in the distribution of onset age was observed between groups, and only 6 patients were diagnosed with intussusceptions within 1 month after vaccination. Conclusion: No difference was observed in the distribution of onset age of intussusception after rotavirus vaccination and according to the type of rotavirus vaccine. Our study has a limitation in that it was conducted in part of the Daegu area. Additional study is needed.

  • This study was undertaken to obtain the data for age determination following the calcification degree of the third molar in the point of forensic odontology. The orthopantomograms of 1399 male and 2517 female ranging from 7 to 22 years of age were studied. The developmental state of the third molar was divided into 12 stages following the calcification degree and the mean ages of stage was obtained and statistically analyzed. The results were as follows : 1. There was remarkable correlation between the development of the third molar and age. 2. There was no significant developmental difference between the right and left third molar. 3. The development of the third molar presents difference between the male and female in the crown formation stages, but it was retarded in female than male in the root formation stages. 4. At the age under 20 years, we can determine the age within the range of * 2 years by means of orthopantomogram.

  • The skin is one of the largest organs in our body and participates in many of the human organism's physiological and pathological events. Skin function were known for self-maintenance and self-repair, mechanical and chemical stress protection, protection against UV and environmental pathogenic micro-organisms, production of vitamin D, and social and psychological function through the physical aspect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the variation of biophysical parameters and to find relation with skin biomarkers in different anatomical site and age in Korean women. About 70 healthy volunteers in age range 20 to 49 were participated in this test. Test areas were the forearms and the cheek. Investigation to determine biophysical parameters on human skin, was carried out using various non-invasive methods. For analysis to skin biomarkers, we studied to examine various biomarkers for the quantitative determination of cortisol, fibronectin, keratin-1, 10, and 11, involucrin, and keratin-6 in human face and forearm. And we measured to skin biophysical parameters for skin anatomical site and age difference with non-invasive methods. As results of measuring site, some parameters were have following significant difference, stratum corneum hydration, trans epidermal water loss and skin color (L and a value). As results of age difference, skin colors were had only significant difference with age. For cortisol, keratin-6, fibronectin, keratin-1, 10, 11 contents, there were no significant difference in age and site. However, involucrin level in the cheeks were the highest for age group 30 ~ 39 compared to other age groups. These results suggest that in individual skin condition may explain detailed skin state variation.

  • Objectives : The object of this study was to evaluate the effect of oriental medical treatment to the growth of children using bone age as measurer. Methods : This clinical study has been carried out with 32 cases(male 15, female 17 of children) aging from 7 to 15 years old, who visited to the Department of Pediatrics growth clinic, ○○ medical center from January 2004 to August 2006 and were treated for more than 12 months. Their height, body weight, body mass index(BMI) and bone age were estimated at two points: Before and after oriental medical treatment was applied. Bone age is measured by X-ray image of growth plate in inferior radiocarpal joint. Results : Bone age correlated with choronological age, height, weight. Difference between bone and choronological age was correlated with percentile of height and weight. The mean growth of children showed 4.03 percentile upwardly(p=.046), and difference between bone and choronological age was reduced from $0.23{\pm}1.62$ to $-0.026{\pm}1.64(p=.040)$ after treatment. Conclusions : This study shows that oriental medical treatment helped growth of children using bone age as measurer.

  • The life changes of TMJ patients were evaluated through the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) questionnaire. 61 female TMJ patients and 80 dental new female outpatients were studied at the TMJ Clinics, Department of Oral Diagnosis, PNUH from February to September 1987. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The life change unit (LCU) totals and number of life events in the TMJ patients were significantly higher than those in the control subjects, especially during the 1-6 months before presentation for the hospital. 2. There was no significant difference in the number of the high-scored (over 150 LCU totals) between the TMJ patients and the control subjects. 3. There was a significant difference in LCU totals and life events between the TMJ patients and the control subjects by age, despite no difference in LCU totals and life events between the young and the advanced subgroups. 4. The LCU totals and the number of life events in the TMJ patients over 13-year-school age were significantly higher than those in the control subjects over 13-year-school age and the TMJ patients under 12-year-school age. 5. The married subgroup in the TMJ patients showed no significant difference in LCU totals and life events as compared with the unmarried one. 6. Categorizing life events into 6 items (marital life, health, occupation, family, finances and social), the TMJ patients had the higher frequencies in marital life and occupation than the control.
