In this study, lignin was efficiently degraded via two-step catalytic cracking process and lignin-oil, char, and gas was produced as lignin degraded products. Three kinds of catalysts (MgO, CaO, and Pt/C) were used in first catalytic cracking step and the highest lignin-oil yield (76.2 wt%) was obtained in Pt/C catalyst with the smallest char formation (4.1 wt%). GC-MS/FID analysis revealed that 18 kinds of monomeric phenols existed in lignin-oil and sum of them was the highest in Pt/C condition (97.8 mg/g lignin). Meanwhile, relatively lower yield of monomeric phenols was produced in MgO and CaO condition because of their absorption on catalysts. Lignin-oil produced over Pt/C was introduced to second catalytic cracking process with porous Pd/activated carbon aerogel catalyst. From this process, four kinds of monomeric phenols such as 4-ethylguaiacol, 4-propylguaiacol, 4-ethylsyringol, 4-propylsyringol were selectively produced at 0.89 - 1.82 wt% level.

Sodium silicate based silica aerogels are lower in cost than silica alkoxide based silica aerogels, but the demand is decreasing as their physical properties are lowered. In this research, acetonitrile as a drying control chemical additive (DCCA) is added in the sol state to improve the pore-structural properties of sodium silicate based silica aerogel by preventing the agglomeration of particles and cross-linked bond. The sodium silicate based silica aerogel by ambient pressure drying were prepared by sol-gel process. Acetonitrile/$Na_2SiO_3$ molar ratio of 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 was added to the sol state. The physical properties of the final product were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared, contact angle measurement, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda measurements and field emission scanning electron microscopy. It was confirmed that the sample with adding 0.15 molar ratio of acetonitrile and sodium silicate showed a high specific surface area ($577m^2/g$), a high pore volume (3.29 cc/g), and a high porosity (93%) comparable to the pore-structural properties of silica alkoxide based silica aerogels.
A fast process for producing pure silica glasses with the reproducibility of 100% by means of sintering of silica aerogels was optimized. The density of silica glasses synthesized by heat-treating upto 110$0^{\circ}C$ with the heating rate of 0.1$^{\circ}C$/min was 2.197 g/㎤. Synthetic silica glasses(5 mm thickness) exhibited the transmittance of 92% in the near IR range as well as they had the excellent mechanical properties such as flexural strength of 162 MPa and hardness of 778 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$.

Oxidative dimerization of methane to C2-hydrocarbons was performed over lead aluminate spinel catalysts. These spinel catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation, aerogel, and sol-gel methods. The active phase of lead aluminate oxides was found to be PbAl2O4 spinel. The activities of the catalysts were strongly dependent on the preparation method as well as the composition of PbAl2O4 phase. The proper oxygen mobility of PbAl2O4 spinel oxides appeared to be important to get high catalytic activity and selectivity for C2-hydrocarbon formation.
The pros and cons of green building thermal insulation materials and systems have been reviewed from traditional thermal insulation materials such as mineral wool and polyurethane to new thermal insulation materials like VIP and aerogel and future insulating VIM and DIM. VIPs and aerogels with very low thermal conductivity can use for green buildings to significantly increase residential area by reducing energy consumption. Aerogels can be produced as not only opaque and but also translucent forms, thus enabling a wide range of possible building application. For building applications, there are many properties to consider like building site adaptability and mechanical strength, fire protection, cost and environmental impact.

Glass wool is an eco-friendly materials that is manufactured through a continuous process by processing waste glass. This materials is low cost compared with another materials and has excellent thermal conductivity. For this reason, glass wool is installed as insulation system for LNG carriers and as insulation of building wall as well as various industries. The mechanism of insulation of glass wool is the conduction of the wool itself and convection by space between fibers. Therefore, in order to develop the enhanced thermal conductivity of glass wool is necessary to reduce its own conduction or to insert additional material after manufacturing as well as prevent convection. In this respect, many researchers have been actively studying to decrease thermal conductivity of polyurethane foam using by inserted glass wool or change the chemical component of glass wool. However, many research are aiming reduction of glass wool itself. This study focus on post-processing and inserted different materials; silica-aerogel, kevlar fiber 1mm, 6mm and glass bubble. Experimental results show that the thermal conductivity almost decreases with the addiction of glass bubble and silica aerogel.

Since Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is normally carried at 1.1 bar pressure and at -163℃, special Cargo Containment System (CCS) are used. As LNG carrier is becoming larger, typical LNG insulation systems adopt a method to increase the thickness of insulation panel to reduce sloshing load and Boil-off Rate (BOR). However, this will decrease LNG cargo volume and increase insulation material costs. In this paper, silica aerogel, glass bubble were synthesized in polyurethane foam to increase volumetric efficiency by improving mechanical and thermal performance of insulation. In order to increase dispersibility of particles, ultrasonic dispersion was used. Dynamic impact test, quasi-static compression test at room temperature (20℃) and cryogenic temperature (-163℃) was evaluated. To evaluate the thermal performance, the thermal conductivity at room temperature (20℃) was measured. As a result, specimens without ultrasonic dispersion have a little effect on strength under the compressive load, although they show high mechanical performance under the impact load. In contrast, specimens with ultrasonic dispersion have significantly increased impact strength and compressive strength. Recently, as the density of Polyurethane foam (PUF) has been increasing, these results can be a method for improving the mechanical and thermal performance of insulation panel.
In the present study, composite insulation mat was reinforced over polyurethane foam (PUF) to improve the thermal performance and impact resistance of the PUF applied to the liquefied natural gas carrier insulation system. The composite insulation mat used Kevlar, aerogel, and cryogel composite mat that can be applied in a cryogenic environment. The thermal conductivity was measured at $20^{\circ}C$ to investigate the thermal performance, and the drop impact test was carried out under impact energy of 30 J at $20^{\circ}C$, $-163^{\circ}C$ to investigate the impact resistance. The measured thermal performance was compared with neat PUF through effective thermal conductivity theoretical value. The shock resistance was evaluated of contact force, contact time, and absorb energy. In experimental results, cryogel composite mat was the best performance in terms of thermal performance, and aerogel composite mat was the best performance in terms of impact resistance.
