This paper presents the aerodynamic coefficient modeling with a new model structure explored by Least Squares using Modulating Function Technique (LS/MFT) for an F-16XL airplane using wind tunnel data supplied by NASA/LRC. A new model structure for aerodynamic coefficient was proposed, one that considered all possible combination terms of angle of attack ${\alpha}$(t) and ${\alpha}$(t) given number of harmonics K, and was compared with Pearson's model, which has the same number of parameters as the new model. Our new model harmonic results show better agreement with the physical data than Pearson's model. The number of harmonics in the model was extended to 6 and its parameters were estimated by LS/MFT. The model output of lift coefficient with K=6 correspond reasonably well with the physical data. In particular, the estimation performances of four aerodynamic coefficients were greatly improved at high frequency by considering all harmonics included in the input${\alpha}$(t), and by using the new model. In addition, the importance of each parameter in the model was analyzed by parameter reduction errors. Moreover, the estimation of three parameters, i.e., amplitude, phase and frequency, for a pure sinusoid and a finite sum of sinusoids- using LS/MFT is investigated.
In this paper a conventional approach for design and analysis of subsonic air vehicle is used. First of all subsonic aerodynamic coefficients are calculated using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) tools and then wind-tunnel model was developed that integrates vehicle components including control surfaces and initial data is validated as well as refined to enhance aerodynamic efficiency of control surfaces. Experimental data and limited computational fluid dynamics solutions were obtained over a Mach number range of 0.5 to 0.8. The experimental data show the component build-up effects and the aerodynamic characteristics of the fully integrated configurations, including control surface effectiveness. The aerodynamic performance of the fully integrated configurations is comparable to previously tested subsonic vehicle models. Mathematical model of the dynamic equations in 6-Degree of Freedom(DOF) is then simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK to simulate trajectory of vehicle. Effect of altitude on range, Mach no and stability is also shown. The approach presented here is suitable enough for preliminary conceptual design. The trajectory evaluation method devised accurately predicted the performance for the air vehicle studied. Formulas for the aerodynamic coefficients for this model are constructed to include the effects of several different aspects contributing to the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle. Characteristic parameter values of the model are compared with those found in a different set of similar air vehicle simulations. We execute a set of example problems which solve the dynamic equations to find the aircraft trajectory given specified control inputs.
Roof-fairing and deflector system have been used on heavy-duty trucks to minimize aerodynamic drag force not only for driving stability of the truck but also for energy saving by reducing the required driving power of the vehicle. In this study, a numerical simulation was carried out to see aerodynamic effect of the drag reducing device on the model vehicle. Drag and lift force generated on the five different models of the drag reducing system were calculated and compared them each other to see which type of device is efficient on the reduction of driving power of the vehicles quantitatively. An experiment has been done to see airflow characteristics on the model vehicles. Airflow patterns around the model vehicles were visualized by smoke generation method to compare the complexity of airflow around drag reducing device. From the results, the deflector systems(Model 5,6) were revealed as a better device for reduction of aerodynamic drag than the roof-fairing systems(Model 2,3,4) on the heavy-duty truck and it can be expected that over 10% of brake power of an engine can be saved on a tractor-trailer by the aerodynamic drag reducing device at normal speed range($80km/h{\sim}$).
This paper describes a new method for the estimation of six complex aerodynamic admittance functions. The aerodynamic admittance functions relate buffeting forces to the incoming wind turbulent components, of which the estimation accuracy affects the prediction accuracy of the buffeting response of long-span bridges. There should be two aerodynamic admittance functions corresponding to the longitudinal and vertical turbulent components, respectively, for each gust buffeting force. Therefore, there are six aerodynamic admittance functions in all for the three buffeting forces. Sears function is a complex theoretical expression for the aerodynamic admittance function for a thin airfoil. Similarly, the aerodynamic admittance functions for a bridge deck should also be complex functions. This paper presents a separated frequency-by-frequency method for estimating the six complex aerodynamic admittance functions. A new experimental methodology using an active turbulence generator is developed to measure simultaneously all the six complex aerodynamic admittance functions. Wind tunnel tests of a thin plate model and a streamlined bridge section model are conducted in turbulent flow. The six complex aerodynamic admittance functions, determined by the developed methodology are compared with the Sears functions and Davenport's formula.
Helicopters and rotary-wing vehicles encounter a wide variety of complex aerodynamic phenomena and these phenomena present substantial challenges for computational fluid dynamics(CFD) models. This investigation presents the rotor aerodynamic analysis items for the helicopter development and variety aerodynamic analysis methods to provide the better solution to researchers and helicopter developers between aerodynamic problems and numerical aerodynamic analysis methods. The numerical methods to make an analysis of helicopter rotor are as below - CFD Modelling : actuator disk model, BET model, fully rotor model,... - Grid : sliding mesh, chimera mesh / structure mesh, unstructure mesh,... - etc. : panel method periodic boundary, quasi-steady simulation, incompressible,... The choice of CFD methodology and the numerical resolution for the overall problem have been driven mostly by available computer speed and memory at any point in time. The combination of the knowledge of aerodynamic analysis items, available computing power and choice of CFD methods now allows the solution of a number of important rotorcraft aerodynamics design problems.
Turbines have been known to be particularly susceptible to flow-induced self-excited vibration. In such vibrations, direct damping and cross stiffness effects of aerodynamic forces determine rotordynamic stability. In axial turbines with eccentric shrouded rotors, the non-uniform sealing gap causes azimuthal non-uniformities in the seal gland pressure and the turbine torque which destabilize the rotor system. Previously, research efforts focused solely on either the seal flow or the unshrouded turbine passge flow. Recently, a model for flow in a turbine with a statically offset shrouded rotor has been developed and some stiffness predictions have been obtained. The model couples the seal flow to the passage flow and uses a small perturbation approach to determine nonaxiymmetric flow conditions. The model uses basic conservation laws. Input parameters include aerodynamic parameters (e.g. flow coefficient, reaction, and work coefficient); geometric parameters (e.g. sealing gap, depth of seal gland, seal pitch, annulus height); and a prescribed rotor offset. Thus, aerodynamic stiffness predictions have been obtained. However, aerodynamic damping (i.e. unsteady aerodynamic) effects caused by a whirling turbine has not yet been examined. Therefore, this paper presents a new unsteady model to predict the unsteady flow field due to a whirling shrouded rotor in turbines. From unsteady perturbations in velocity and pressure at various whirling frequencies, not only stiffness but also damping effects of aerodynamic forces can be obtained. Furthermore, relative contributions of seal gland pressure asymmetry and turbine torque asymmetry are presented.
The effectiveness of aerodynamic modification to reduce wind loadings has been widely reported. However, most of previous studies have been investigated dynamic forces and pressure distributions on tall buildings with various unconventional configurations. This study was investigated dynamic characteristics and aerodynamic instability of super-tall buildings with unconventional configurations through extensive aeroelastic model experiments. Seventeen types of supertall building models were considered such as basic and corner modification with corner cut, chamfered, oblique opening, tapered, inversely tapered, bulged, helical with twist angles of $90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$, $270^{\circ}$, $360^{\circ}$ and composite with $360^{\circ}$ helical & corner cut, 4-tapered & $360^{\circ}$ helical & corner cut, setback & corner cut, setback & $45^{\circ}$ rotate. As a result, aerodynamic characteristics of helical models with single modification are superior to those of other models with single modification. However, effect of twist angle for helical model is negligible. Further, the 4-tapered & $360^{\circ}$helical & corner cut model is most effective in reducing the along- and across-wind fluctuating displacement responses in all of experimental models.

In this study, a generalized three-degree-of-freedom (3-DoF) analytical model is formulated to predict linear aerodynamic instabilities of a prism under quasi-steady (QS) conditions. The prism is assumed to possess a generic cross-section exposed to turbulent wind flow. The 3-DoFs encompass two orthogonal horizontal directions and rotation about the prism body axis. Inertial coupling is considered to account for the non-coincidence of the mass center and the rotation center. The aerodynamic force coefficients-drag, lift, and moment-depend on the Reynolds number based on relative flow velocity, angle of attack, and the angle between the wind and the cable. Aerodynamic forces are linearized with respect to the static equilibrium configuration and mean wind velocity. Routh-Hurwitz and Liénard and Chipart criteria are used in the eigenvalue problem, yielding an analytical solution for instabilities in galloping and static divergence types. Additionally, the minimum structural damping and stiffness required to prevent these instabilities are numerically determined. The proposed 3-DoF instability model is subsequently applied to a conductor with ice accretion and a full-scale dry inclined cable. In comparison to existing models, the developed model demonstrates superior prediction accuracy for unstable regions compared with results in wind tunnel tests.
Numerical analysis of aerodynamic heating for KPSAM is performed using aerodynamic heating model suitable to KPSAM, which has complex flow field resulting from the spike attached to the dome, such as large separation area and the strong shock/boundary layer interaction region around reattachment point on the dome. The aerodynamic heating model is validated and modified through the comparison between the flight test measurement and the thermal analysis results. TFD temperature sensors are installed on the dome to measure surface temperature during the flight. Computation results, obtained from the heat transfer analysis on the sensors, agree well with flight test data. The aerodynamic heating model provides heat transfer rate into surface as a boundary condition of unsteady 1D/axisymmetric thermal analysis on the missile structure. The axisymmetric thermal analysis using FLUENT is more versatile than the 1D analysis and can be applied to the heating problem related with complex structures and multi-dimensional heat transfer problems such as prediction of temperature rise at contact surface of different materials.
A new method identifies coupled fluid-structure system with a reduced set of state variables is presented. Assuming that the structural model is known a priori either from an analysis or a test and using linear transformations between structural and aeroelastic states, it is possible to deduce aerodynamic information from sampled time histories of the aeroelastic system. More specifically given a finite set of structural modes the method extracts generalized aerodynamic force matrix corresponding to these mode shapes. Once the aerodynamic forces are known, an aeroelastic reduced-order model can be constructed in discrete-time, state-space format by coupling the structural model and the aerodynamic system. The resulting reduced-order model is suitable for constant Mach, varying density analysis.
