To develop the aerodynamic performance, there are widely two group of studies are achieved. The first one is about design of the vehicles geometry and the second one is about aerodynamic devices. Geometry design is highly credible and stable method. But it is not flexible and each parts are related interactively. So if one part geometry are modified, the other parts are required to be redesigned. The other hand, flow control by aerodynamic device is flexible and modulized method. Though it needs energy, relatively little input makes far advanced aerodynamic performance. Synthetic Jet is one of the second group method. The device repeats suction and blowing motion in constant frequency. According to the performance, the flow which are near the flight surface are served momentum. This mechanism can reduce the aerodynamic loss by boundary layer and separated flow. Synthetic jet actuator has several parameters, that influence the flow control. This study focus the parameters effects of the synthetic jet - orifice geometry, frequency, jet speed and etc.

This paper reviews shape optimization studies for tall and super-tall building design. Firstly, shape effects on aerodynamic and response characteristics are introduced and discussed. Effects of various configurations such as corner modifications, taper, setback, openings, and twists are examined. Comprehensive comparative studies on various configurations including polygon building models, and composite type building models such as corner-cut and taper, corner-cut and taper and helical, and so on, are also discussed under the conditions of the same height and volume. Aerodynamic characteristics are improved by increasing the twist angle of helical buildings and increasing the number of sides of polygon buildings, but a twist angle of $180^{\circ}$ and a number of sides of 5 (pentagon) seem to be enough. The majority of examined configurations show better aerodynamic characteristics than straight-square. In particular, composite type buildings and helical polygon buildings show significant improvement. Next, shape effects on pedestrian-level wind characteristics around tall and super-tall buildings are introduced and discussed. Corner modification buildings show significant reductions in speed-up areas. On the other hand, setback and tapered models with wider projected widths near the ground show adverse effects on pedestrian-level wind characteristics.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the aerodynamic characteristics of three hypersonic configurations including pure liftbody configuration, pure waverider configuration and liftbody integrated with waverider configuration. Hypersonic forbodies were designed based on these configurations. For the purpose to integrate with ramjet or scramjet, all the forebodies were designed integrated with hypersonic inlet. To better understand the forebody performance, three dimensional flow field calculation of these hypersonic forebodies integrated with hypersonic inlet were conducted in the design and off design conditions. The computational results show that waverider offer an aerodynamic performance advantage in the terms of higher lift-drag ratios over the other two configurations. Liftbody offer good aerodynamic performance in subsonic region. The aerodynamic performance of the liftbody integrated with waverider configuration is not comparable to that of pure waverider in the terms of lift-drag ratios and is not comparable to that of pure liftbody in subsonic. But the liftbody integrated with waverider configuration exhibit good lateral-directional and longitudinal-directional stability characteristics. Both pure waverider and liftbody integrated with waverider configuration can provide relatively uniform flow for the inlet and offer good aerodynamic characteristics in the terms of recovery coefficient of total pressure and uniformity coefficient.
A research to evaluate efficiency of design optimization was performed for aerodynamic design optimization problem in distributed computing environment. The aerodynamic analyses which take most of computational work during design optimization were divided into several jobs and allocated to associated PC clients through network. This is not a parallel process based on domain decomposition rather than a simultaneous distributed-analyses process using network-distributed computers. GBOM(gradient-based optimization method), SAO(Sequential Approximate Optimization) and RSM(Response Surface Method) were implemented to perform design optimization of transonic airfoil and to evaluate their efficiencies. One dimensional minimization followed by direction search involved in the GBOM was found an obstacle against improving efficiency of the design process in distributed computing environment. The SAO was found quite suitable for the distributed computing environment even it has a handicap of local search. The RSM is apparently the fittest for distributed computing environment, but additional trial and error works needed to enhance the reliability of the approximation model are annoying and time-consuming so that they often impair the automatic capability of design optimization and also deteriorate efficiency from the practical point of view.
The one way fluid structure interaction analysis on advanced propeller blade for next generation turboprop aircraft. HS1 airfoil series are selected as a advanced propeller blade airfoil. Adkins method is used for aerodynamic design and performance analysis with respect to the design point. Adkins method is based on the vortex-blade element theory which design the propeller to satisfy the condition for minimum energy loss. propeller geometry is generated by varying chord length and pitch angle at design point. Blade sweep is designed based on the design mach number and target propulsion efficiency. The aerodynamic characteristics of the designed Advanced propeller were verified by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) and showed the enhanced performance than the conventional propeller. The skin-foam sandwich structural type is adopted for blade. The high stiffness, strength carbon/epoxy composite material is used for the skin and PMI(Polymethacrylimide) is used for the foam. Aerodynamic load is calculated by computational fluid dynamics. Linear static stress analysis is performed by finite element analysis code MSC.NASTRAN in order to investigate the structural safety. The result of structural analysis showed that the design has sufficient structural safety. It was concluded that structural safety assessment should incorporate the off-design points.

This paper describes an application of centrifugal compressor optimization system, in which the blade profile of impeller is represented with NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) curve. A commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program named NUMECA fine/turbo was used to evaluate the performance of the whole centrifugal compressor flow passage including impeller and diffuser. The whole optimization design system was integrated based on iSIGHT, a commercial integration and optimization software, which provides a direct application of some optimization algorithms. To insure the practicability of optimization, the performance of centrifugal compressor under all condition was concerned during the optimizing process. That means a compositive object function considering the aerodynamic efficiency, pressure ratio and mass flow rate under different work condition was applied by using different weight number for different conditions. Using the optimization method described in this paper, an optimized design of the impeller blade of centrifugal compressor was obtained. Comparing to the original design, optimized design has a better performance not only under the design work condition, but also the off-design work condition including near stall and near choke condition.

A multi-level design optimization framework for aerodynamic design of rotary wing such as propeller and helicopter rotor blades is presented in this study. Strategy of the proposed framework is to enhance aerodynamic performance by sequentially applying the planform and sectional design optimization. In the first level of a planform design, we used a genetic algorithm and blade element momentum theory (BEMT) based on two-dimensional aerodynamic database to find optimal planform variables. After an initial planform design, local flow conditions of blade sections are analyzed using high-fidelity CFD methods. During the next level, a sectional design optimization is conducted using two dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and a gradient based optimization algorithm. When optimal airfoil shape is determined at the several spanwise locations, a planform design is performed again. Through this iterative design process, not only an optimal flow condition but also an optimal shape of an EAV propeller blade is obtained. To validate the optimized propeller-blade design, it is tested in wind-tunnel facility with different flow conditions. An efficiency, which is slightly less than the expected improvement of 7% predicted by our proposed design framework but is still satisfactory to enhance the aerodynamic performance of EAV system.

The design process of blended inlet body (BIB) for the preliminary design of a near-space high supersonic unmanned aerial vehicle (HSUAV) is presented. The mass flow rate and cowl area of inlet at a design point are obtained according to the cruise condition of the HSUAV. A mixed-compression axisymmetric supersonic inlet section with a fixed geometry reasonably matching the high supersonic cruise state is created by using the inviscid theory of aerodynamics. The inlet section is optimized and used as a baseline section for the BIB design. Three BIB concepts for the HSUAV are proposed, and their internal aerodynamic characteristics of inlet are evaluated using Euler computational fluid dynamics (Euler CFD) solver. The preferred concept is identified, in which the straight leading edge of the baseline HSUAV configuration is modified into the convex leading edge to accommodate the inlet and meet the requirements of the cowl area to capture the sufficient air flow. The total recovery of inlet for the preferred BIB concept and the aerodynamic characteristics of the modified HSUAV configuration are verified using Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics (NS CFD) solver. The validation indicates that the preferred BIB concept can meet both the requirements of the inlet and aerodynamic performance of the HSUAV.
In this study, preliminary design of human powered aircraft was performed by considering the aerodynamic performance. For this, overall weight including the aircraft and pilot was determined. Then, the main wing and horizontal/vertical tail were designed with appropriate selection of the airfoils and planform shapes. Based on these, three dimensional flow was calculated to obtain lift and drag coefficients and the position of center of gravity (CG). Consequently, it was shown that the lift and power of the aircraft satisfied the constraints of the minimum required lift and the pilot's available power. Also, the CG of the aircraft was located at aerodynamic center (AC) of the main wing, which guaranteed 26% of the static margin.
The aerodynamic performance of a cross-flow fan is strongly influenced by the various design factors of a rear-guider and a stabilizer. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of a rear-guider and a stabilizer on the aerodynamic performance of a cross-flow fan. The design factors considered in this paper are a rear-guider clearance, a stabilizer clearance, and a stabilizer setup angle, respectively. This experiment was carried out with a constant revolution number of 700 rpm in a cross-flow fan installed in the fan tester. The static pressure, flowrate, torque, and revolution number were measured in this paper. Also, the pressure coefficient and the efficiency were analysed according to the various assembly conditions using a stabilizer setup angle, a stabilizer clearance, and a rear-guider clearance in the indoor room air-conditioner.
