Extracellular production of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 (rhBMP-7) was carried out through the fermentation of Bacillus subtilis. Three significant fermentation conditions and medium components were selected and optimized to enhance the rhBMP-7 production by using the response surface methodology (RSM). The optimum values of the three variables for the maximum extracellular production of rhBMP-7 were found to be 2.93 g/l starch, 5.18 g/l lactose, and a fermentation time of 34.57 h. The statistical optimization model was validated with a few fermentations of B. subtilis in shake flasks under optimized and unoptimized conditions. A 3-L jar fermenter using the shake-flask optimized conditions resulted in a higher production (413 pg/ml of culture medium) of rhBMP-7 than in a shake flask (289.1 pg/ml), which could be attributed to the pH being controlled at 6.0 and constant agitation of 400 rpm with aeration of 1 vvm.

This study was performed to examine the effects of chaff as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction and salinity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to chaff in reactor Control, Ch-1, Ch-2, Ch-3 and Ch-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the ascending of the highest reaction temperature and the elongation of the high temperature reaction period. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more fast time of pH ascending. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more fast consistency in the weight and volume reduction rates. Salinities were condensed by reaction days. The final salinity of Control was 2.79%, and the final range of salinities of chaff mixtures was 2.18 - 2.37%.

Bioremediation has been showing promise as an alternative to conventional environmental cleanup technologies. The objective of this study is to maximize the degradability of jet fuel in the soil system. The cells isolated from petroleum contaminated site was used for the degradation of jet fuel. When this strain was cultured in the MSM(minimal salt media) containing jet fuel for ten days, the degradability of jet fuel was almost 100%. The concentration of jet fuel did not affect the degradability much and the increased inoculution of strain and addition of nitrogen source decreased the time for complete degradation of jet fuel in the liquid culture. Inoculation of this strain increased the jet fuel degradability in the soil column by 15% and the aeration(50ml/min) and the addition of nutrients($NaNO_3$, $KH_2PO_4$) enhanced the jet fuel degradability(about 90%).
This study was performed by the airlift bioreactor using the nitrifier consortium entrapped in polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) for removing low concentration total ammonia nitrogen(TAN). At the aeration rate of 1.5 vvm, TAN removal rate and removal efficiency was 316.6${\pm}$7.2 $g/m^3$ day and 92.8${\pm}$2.2%. Removal rate was continuously increased with decreasing from 0.5hr to 0.05hr of hydraulic residence time(HRT), whereas removal efficiency was decreased with decreasing HRT.
This study represents that a removal efficiency of organic matters in wastewater is activated by a sludge process using new mixed microbial population. In case of mixed microorganisms, removal rates of suspended solid (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were over 90 percent under experimental condition, and removal efficiency of organic matters, sludge density index (SDI) and capillary suction time (CST) in mixed population were higher than that in not-mixed microorganism, while total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (T-P) which indicate a degree of eutrophication were removed easily in both case. From these results, we may propose that an application of the mixed microbial population is useful to treat domestic wastewater including a great deal of organic matters.

This study is on the biodegradability of the activated sludge, which used to biodegrade Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate(LAS), synthetic detergents and sufactants. The activated sludge in waste water treatment plant is used to the test of biodegradation of anionic surfactants and nonionic surfactants, but it have the periodic change of the biological propety to the lapse of the time. For the puropse of controlling and adjusting of the activated sludge in biodegradation test, we collected microorganisms from the sewage plant and the soil, and then, made the activated sludge in semicontinuous aeration chamber. From determined biodegradation data, and the degree of biodegradability to the LAS, we confirmd the standardized synthetic activated sludge which have more stable biodegradability than the sewage activated sludge. In continuous biodegradation test, LAS(dodecene-1) was biodegraded more than 99%, In 7days by the standardized activated sludge.

For more accurately describing the durations of the light and the dark phases of micro-algal cells over the whole light-dark cycle, and probing into the relationship between the liquid circulation time or velocity, the aeration rate and cell density, a series of experiments was carried out in 10 cm light-path flat plate photobioreactors. The results indicated that the liquid flow in the flat plate photobioreactor could be described by liquid dynamic equations, and a high biomass output, higher content and productivity of arachidonic acid, $70.10\;gm^{-2}d^{-1},\;9.62\%$ and 510.3 mg/L, respectively, were obtained under the optimal culture conditions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the biologically treated animal wastewater as a liquid fertilizer in the paddy rice. The treated water has content of the ammonia nitrogen 24mg/I and nitrate 40 mg/I on an average in the first year. A trace of nitrite has been shown. The phosphate content was 92 mg/I on an average. The amount of yielded rice was 365kg/10a for test 1 (no fertilizer), 388dg/10a for test 2(chemical fertilizer), 526kg/10a for test 3 (treated water) respectively. The treated water showed 35% more in production than the chemical fertilizer. The treated water has content of the ammonia nitrogen 40mg/I and nitrate 67mg/I on an average in the second year. A trace of nitrite has been shown. The phosphate content was 57mg/I on an average. The amount of yielded rice was 402kg/10a for test 1, 505kg/10a for test 2, 607kg/10a for test 3 respectively. Yield of unhulled rice was 20% more in the plot of treated water than that of chemical fertilizer.
A membrane bioreactor (MBR) was used to investigate the aerobic degradation of foam active substance - non-ionic surfactant, APG 2000 UP. The surface aeration using the propeller loop reactor (PLR) guaranteed sufficient $O_2$ for substrate removal and bacteria growth and avoided foam development. Moreover, the cross-flow membrane filtration enabled the separation of the bacteria still loaded with surfactant in the collecting container. The biological degradation of the surfactant with varying hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent concentration $c_{S0}$ showed high substrate removal of nearly 95% at high volumetric loading rates up to $7.4\;kgCOD\;m^{-3}d^{-1}$ and at sludge loading rates up to 1.8 kgCOD $(kgVSS\;d)^{-1}$ for biomass concentration $c_B\;{\approx}\;constant $. The increasing $c_B$ from 3.4 to $14.5\;gL^{-1}$ TSS respectively sludge retention time (SRT) from 5.1 to 442 d under complete biomass retention by the membrane filtration resulted in high removal of substrate ${\alpha}\;>\;90%$ with reducing excess sludge production.
The enzyme expressed from strain L-49 was 2.01 times higher than that of original strain. Strain L-49 can grow on culture plate with $50{\mu}g/mL$ ampicillin. The synthesis of $\alpha$-amylase was greatly suppressed when strain L-49 was grown on monosaccharide such as glucose and polysaccharide at the same time cell concentration was low. Amylase production was enhanced when the bacterium was grown on starch and dextrin. Among different nitrogen sources tried, yeast extract was found to be the best followed by panpeptone, peptone, meat extract, bean meal, and corn steep liquor. The average rate of enzyme production was enhanced for 3~4 times in fermentation time from 24h to 44h. The sugar uptake rate has also increased. Low oxygen supply rate enhanced the rate of strain propagation but depressed the enzyme production. Hence it is benefit to obtain high enzyme activity that agitation speed maintained not lower than 400r/min and aeration rate maintained greater than 1:1vvm.
