The Eukaryote Alternative: Advantages of Using Yeasts in Place of Bacteria in Microbial Biosensor Development

  • The relationship between Man and yeast has been a successful and enduring one. The characteristics of yeast have made it an ideal tool in scientific research and as such, it has been used extensively. In this review some of the advantages, methods and applications of yeasts in the biosensor field are outlined. In doing so, we propose a eukaryotic alternative to the current battery of bacteria-based microbial biosensors.

Thoracoscopic Pneumonectomy (흉강경을 이용한 전폐절제술)

  • We reported a successful right pneumonectomy using video assisted thoracoscopy for endobronchial tuberculosis. Thoracoscopic surgery has many advantages in spite of its technical difficulties. These advantages include good cosmetic effects, short hospital stay, decreased postoperative morbidity, and good postoperative pulmonary function.The patient was young unmarried female, and her right lung was nearly total obstructed by endobronchial tuberculous dissemination and secondary pulmonary infection. The procedure was a little complicated by inadequate placements of the thoracoscopic ports and 5cm length utility thoracotomy incision. Minimal pain killer was needed only two days after operation and scar of operative wound was very satisfying. Postoperative course was unusual and the patient was discharged 7 days after operation.

  • In this experiments of design, vibration evaluation, and test of vehicles, aircraft, and other mechanisms the development of vibration simulator that serves environment similar to real fields takes lots of advantages. Especially, in the real field test of vehicles it possesses the advantages of showing the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle. In this study, to investigate the validity and fitness of proposed 6DOF parallel link mechanism we simulated that mechanism.

  • Our studies diagnose insulation degradation using the method of computer sensing system, which has the advantages of PD(partial discharge) and AE(acoustic emission) sensing system. To use advantages of these two methods can be used effectively to search for treeing location and PD in some materials. In analysis method of degradation, using statically operator such as the center of gravity (G), the gradient of the discharge distribution(C), we have analyzed for the prediction of life which we can be obtained the time, occurred of many pulse of small discharge amplitude.

  • The rectifier is the main element in the telecom DC power system. This paper investigates the advantages and disadvantages of three rectifier techniques ; thyristor, ferro - resonant, and switched - mode. Compared with other techniques, the switched - mode rectifier tech¬nique offers several advantages such as higher efficiency, smaller size and weight, and lower audible noise. Technical requirements in telecom rectifier plant are also described. Finally, the future trends in telecom powering are discussed in connection with the advance oftelecom net¬works.

  • Borehole radar is one kind of GPR, but it can be used in deep boreholes, and it has many advantages compared with low frequency borehole EM tools, and surface GPR. We have developed various techniques on borehole radar for environment study. The hardware development includes broadband radar system with the functions of polarimetry and inteferometry. By using these systems, we tested the measurements to applications such as subsurface fracture characterization, subsurface cavity detections. In this paper, we will describe the advantages of the advanced radar technology for environment studies, and show some experiment results.

  • Reinforced concrete structure can be strengthened by glass fiber reinforced plastic thin panels. The GFRP-Thin Panels are manufactured by pressing form and their application technique are similar to steel plates. The use of FGRP-Thin Panels presents several advantages. The advantages of this structural system are the case of application, the elimination of joint and corrosion at the epoxy-panel interface. This paper introduces the method of manufacturing about GFRP-Thin Panels, mechanical properties and the application of reinforced concrete structures.

  • Nowdays, related with vehicle weight reduction, many automotive maker are trying to develop spaceframe. If aluminum member and steel member are applied together in constructing spaceframe, there will be many advantages in aspect of inclosing strength and saving weight of automotive. In this case, joining method of aluminum and steel members has to be proposed. For this method, electomagnetic joining has many advantages compared to welding. In this paper, joining of aluminum tube and steel tube using eletomagnetic pressure was studied and strength of joint was evaluated through commission test.

  • Recently polymer insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymer insulators for transmission and distribution line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. In this paper, distribution polymer suspension insulator has been designed and investigated electric field distribution by FEM.

  • The treatment method of leachate was increasing with the progress of science and technology, the management system was more perfect. The paper gathered so far the leachate treatment technology, including physical, chemical and biological treatment technology, and found the technology to be improved, the paper expounds the advantages and disadvantages of each method, applicable scope in the future, leachate treatment technology.
