The control of magnetization by an electric field at room temperature remains as one of great challenges in materials science. Multiferroics, in which magnetism and ferroelectricity coexist and couple to each other, could be the most plausible candidate to realize this long-sought capability. While recent intensive research on the multiferroics has made significant progress in sensitive, magnetic control of electric polarization, the electrical control of magnetization, the converse effect, has been observed only in a limited range far below room temperature. Here we demonstrate at room temperature the control of both electric polarization by a magnetic field and magnetization by an electric field in a multiferroic hexaferrite. The electric polarization rapidly increases in a magnetic field as low as 5 mT and the magnetoelectric susceptibility reaches up to 3200 ps/m, the highest value in single phase materials. The magnetization is also modulated up to 0.34 mB per formula unit in an electric field of 1.14 MV/m. Furthermore, this compound allows nonvolatile, magnetoelectric reading- and writing-operations entirely at room temperature. Four different magnetic/electric field writing conditions generate repeatable, distinct M versus E curves without dissipation, offering an unprecedented opportunity for a multi-bit memory or a spintronic device applications.

The analog or partly digital typed interface of main control room in nuclear power plant (NPP) is gradually being replaced to the totally digitalized interface suitable for the digital environment. SKN 3,4 Nuclear Power Plant is currently developed in such a way to employ advanced displays and controls such as computerized procedure system(CPS), large display panel(LDP), and Soft control. According to the developed design process, the main control room (MCR) of the SKN3,4 was aesthetically designed based on a design concept of the health and sustainability and technically evaluated with human factors guidelines, which somehow lack of the confidence on the evaluation for the rapidly changing digital environment. The suitable review guideline for the digitalized interface and the environment was developed such as the guideline for CPS with information displays on VDU. For the guideline development, tremendous guidelines and technical papers related to evaluation issues of digital environment has been collected, analyzed and transformed to electric database forms and then built on database management system, called Design Review Supporting System to retrieve the appropriate issues for the practical usage of evaluators-in-field.
This paper describes the development of a 3-DOF laparoscopic assistant robot system with motor-controlled bending and zooming mechanisms using the voice command motion control and auto-tracking control. The system is designed with two major criteria: safety and adaptability. To satisfy the safety criteria we designed the robot with optimized range of motion. For adaptability, the robot is designed with compact size to minimize interference with the staffs in the operating room. The required external motions were replaced by the bending mechanism within the abdomen using flexible laparoscope. The zooming of the robot is achieved through in and out motion at the port where the laparoscope is inserted. The robot is attachable to the bedside using a conventional laparoscope holder with multiple DOF joints and is compact enough for hand-carry. The voice-controlled command input and auto-tracking control is expected to enhance the overall performance of the system while reducing the control load imposed on the surgeon during a laparoscopic surgery. The proposed system is expected to have sufficient safety features and an easy-to-use interface to enhance the overall performance of current laparoscopy.

An Integrated Test Facility(ITF) is a human factors experimental environment to evaluate an advanced man machine interface(MMI) design. The ITF includes a human machine simulator(HMS) comprised of a nuclear power plant function simulator, man-machine interface, experiment control station for the experiment control and design, human behavioural data measurement system, and data analysis and experiment evaluation supporting system(DAEXESS). The most important features of ITF is to secure the flexibility and expandibility of Man Machine Interlace(MMI) design to change easily the environment of experiments to accomplish the experiment's objects In this paper, we describe a development scope and characteristics of the ITF such as, hardware and software development scope and characteristics, system thermohydraulic modelling characteristics, and experiment station characteristics for the experiment variables design and control, to be used as an experiment environment for the evaluation of VDU-based control room.
In the present study, we investigate the effects of milling time and the addition of a process control agent (PCA) on the austenite stability of a nanocrystalline Fe-7%Mn alloy by XRD analysis and micrograph observation. Nanocrystalline Fe-7%Mn alloys samples are successfully fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The crystallite size of ball-milled powder and the volume fraction of austenite in the sintered sample are calculated using XRD analysis. Changes in the shape and structure of alloyed powder according to milling conditions are observed through FE-SEM. It is found that the crystallite size is reduced with increasing milling time and amount of PCA addition due to the variation in the balance between the cold-welding and fracturing processes. As a result, the austenite stability increased, resulting in an exceptionally high volume fraction of austenite retained at room temperature.

Recently, there have been many studies pertaining to reducing energy consumption on ships. As part of those studies, the energy consumption of ships can be reduced by understanding and controlling the varying loads, excluding fixed loads. In existing ships, engine room fans are usually operated based on the actual experience of the crew without any special guidelines. To realize energy reduction, we investigate the characteristics of engine-room fans, and we propose an energy-management system called the engine room fan control system (ERFCS) and the ERFCS algorithm. The ERFCS controls the fan speed depending on the temperature and pressure, where one to four fans are operated depending on changes in the load. In addition, the minimum rotation speed of the engine-room fan was limited to 50% to prevent the surging phenomenon, which is due to fan damage or low pressure resulting from mechanical friction or heating at low fan speeds. We develop a fan control system simulation model using LabVIEW that is based on the proposed algorithm and ISO 8861. Finally, we perform simulations to confirm that operation of the proposed fan control system is possible using only 46.4% of the power required by the existing method.
More than half of all incidents in large complex technological systems, particularly in nuclear power or aviation industries, were attributable in some way to human erroneous actions. These incidents were largely due to the human engineering deficiencies of man-machine interface (MMI). In nuclear industry, advanced computer-based MMI designs are emerging as part of new reactor designs. The impact of advanced MMI technology on the operator performance, and as a result, on plant safety should be thoroughly evaluated before such technology is actually adopted in nuclear power plants. This paper discusses the applicability of human reliability analysis (HRA) to support the design review process. Both the first-generation and the second-generation HRA methods are considered focusing on a couple of promising HRA methods, i.e., ATHEANA and CREAM, with the potential to assist the design review process.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of visual programs on job stress and burnout in emergency room nurses. This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. There were 26 participants in the experimental group and 27 in the control group. Data collection took place from December 12, 2017 to February 17, 2018. The program comprised eight weekly 120-minutes sessions, which included understanding and assessing job stress and burnout. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test, paired t-test, and independent t-test. As a result, levels of job stress (t=-20.09, p<.001) and burnout (t=-22.31, p<.001) decreased significantly in the experimental group. The results suggest that the Visual Media Program could be an effective strategy for reducing job stress and burnout. Therefore, it is deemed a useful intervention for improving the quality of nursing care provided in emergency rooms.
Human factors engineering design guidelines for main control rooms(MCR) in nuclear power plants(NPP) have been applied to optimize human-machine interface(HMI) between operators and their equipment on the basis of physical, physiological and cognitive aspects. However, the HMI design for MCR is not found to be sufficient to maximize operators' performance since the operators in the MCR experience excessive stress due to the environmental factors such as inappropriate interiors and illumination. Therefore, well-designed environment of the MCR may be equally important to improve human performance in the MCR. The objectives of the study are two-fold: (1) to propose an interior design of SHIN-KORI 1 2 for pleasant and comfortable working environments, and (2) to design indirect lighting system to enhance visibility and productivity. The human factors engineering checklists were developed to examine whether or not the proposed human-environment design for SHIN-KORI 1 2 satisfies the regulations and guidelines presented by NUREG-0700 Revision 1. The implications of the human-environment design are discussed in detail.
We suggest that supercontinuum can be used for absorption spectroscopy to observe the exciton levels of a semiconductor nano-structure. Exciton absorption spectrum of a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well was observed using supercontinuum generated by a microstructrured fiber pumped by a femtosecond (fs) pulsed laser. Significantly narrower peaks were observed in the absorption spectrum from 11 K up to room temperature than photoluminescence (PL) spectrum peaks. Because supercontinuum is coherent light and can readily provide high enough intensity, this method can provide a coherent ultra-broad band light source to identify exciton levels in semiconductors, and be applicable to coherent nonlinear spectroscopy such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), lasing without inversion (LWI) and coherent photon control in semiconductor quantum structures.
