  • This study explored the influence of adolescent depression on adult media addiction by examining Bronfenbrenner's ecological perspective. The ecological perspective is a useful framework to identify the link between youths' interacting subjects in the ecological environment. It can also be used to understand adolescent problems and addiction behaviors. The current study examined the influence of parents, peers, and teachers on adult media addiction and depression with a focus on micro-systems that have the greatest influence on adolescents among various environmental systems. We analyzed 568 participants who reported exposure to adult media. SPSS 20.0 was used to conduct a descriptive analysis of the data; AMOS 19.0 was used to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model. The results of study are as follows. First, parental abuse and peer alienation significantly increases depression. Second, peer communication significantly decreases depression. Third, parental monitoring and parental affection significantly decreased adult media addiction. Fourth, parental abuse, peer alienation, and depression significantly increased adult media addiction. This study is meaningful in that it examines the influence of parent, peer, and teacher relationships among adolescents on adult media addiction and depression. This study can be helpful to understand adult media addiction and depression among Korean adolescents.

The PSKC data of this study were gathered from the elementary school students in their 10th survey (1,286 3rd grade students). Methods: The SPSS 21.0 program was used for data mining decision tree analysis, and the results are as follows. Results: First, the most important predictor of media device addiction was planning-organization which was among the sub-factors of executive function. Second, as a result of the decision tree analysis, the children with the highest probability of addiction to media devices were ones that had difficulties in planning and organizing, had mothers with a permissive parenting attitude felt difficulties in controlling behavior, and were alone at home for more than two hours a day without any adult supervision. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study can help guide the direction of future research related to children's addiction to media devices by exploring and analyzing factors that significantly affect children's addiction to media devices.

  • This study aims to examine whether a parental neglect affects an adolescent's peer attachment and adult media immersion has a mediating effect. To achieve this goal, the first year of middle school panel of 'the 6th(2015) Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS)' was utilized. Using SPSS PROCESS Macro developed by Hayes, 'Bootstrapping' was employed to examine the significancy of the mediating effect on 563 objectives. According to the study, first of all, more parental neglect gave rise to less peer attachment. Second, the adult media immersion partly mediates the parental neglect and the adolescent's peer attachment. The practical implications of this results are below : First, parents' care and affection inside a home is necessary to formulate the healthy peer attachment of adolescent. Second, a parent education is important to prevent an adolescent's adult media immersion. Third, an adult media education for an adolescent is desired.
