Concept of the comfort and fitness has become a major concern in the basic function of the ready.made clothes. Until now ready-made clothes were not made by on the basis of the bodytype, but by the body size only This research was performed to classify and characterize the bodytypes of Korean adult males. Sample size was 1290 subjects and their age range was from 19 to 54 years old. 25 variables from the photographic data were applied to analyze the bodytype of trunk. Data were analyzed by the multivariate method, especially factor and cluster analysis. The groups forming a cluster can be subdivided into 5 sets by crosstabulation extracted by the hierarchical cluster analysis. 5 bodytypes classified by the photographic sources could be combined with the anthropometric data and were demonstrated with 5 silhouette. Type 3 and 4 in trunk were dominant and were composed of the majority of 55.6% of the subjects. Bodytypes of Korean males were influenced by the degree of posture erectness and of curvature of the front side of the body in waist and abdomen.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships among gender, information-seeking styles, and high risk behavior in Korean adults. Methods: A survey utilizing a structured questionnaire was used to examine the relationships of the study variables. Eight hundred fifty six adults were recruited and this group consisted of 403 females and 453 males. Information seeking style and high risk behavior were measured by Miller Behavioral Style Scale revised by Zurren and Wolfs, and High Risk Behaviors checklist developed by Lee, respectively. Results: Differences between gender were significant in information-seeking styles and high risk behavior. Monitoring and blunting scores were both higher in female than male, and high risk behavior was higher in males than females. The blunting style was positively related to high-risk behavior and the monitoring style was negatively related to high risk behavior. Conclusion: To intervene with high risk behavior effectively, individual differences such as gender and information seeking style should be considered. In addition, the research about well-designed health information support is needed in the future.
Background: The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) was carried out for systematically monitoring tobacco use and for tracking key tobacco control indicators. Materials and Methods: A total of 70,802 households, including 42,647 in rural areas and 28,155 in urban areas, were covered with a three stage sampling design. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, attitude and practices of tobacco consumption. Results: GATS-India highlighted that total tobacco use among its residents is overall 34.6%, varying for males (47.9%) and females (20.7%). The rural areas of the country exhibit comparatively higher prevalence rates (38.4%) in comparison to urban areas (25.3%). Overall, Khaini, a smokeless tobacco product (12.0%), is the most popular form of tobacco use among males and females, followed by bidi smoking (9.0%). Conclusion: Results of GATS data can be used as baseline for evaluation of new tobacco control approaches in India integrating culturally acceptable and cost effective measures.
Background: Sampling a healthy reference population to generate reference intervals (RIs) for complete blood count (CBC) parameters is not common for pediatric and geriatric ages. We established age- and sex-specific RIs for CBC parameters across pediatric, adult, and geriatric ages using secondary data, evaluating patterns of changes in CBC parameters. Methods: The reference population comprised 804,623 health examinees (66,611 aged 3-17 years; 564,280 aged 18-59 years; 173,732 aged 60-99 years), and, we excluded 22,766 examinees after outlier testing. The CBC parameters (red blood cell [RBC], white blood cell [WBC], and platelet parameters) from 781,857 examinees were studied. We determined statistically significant partitions of age and sex, and calculated RIs according to the CLSI C28-A3 guidelines. Results: RBC parameters increased with age until adulthood and decreased with age in males, but increased before puberty and then decreased with age in females. WBC and platelet counts were the highest in early childhood and decreased with age. Sex differences in each age group were noted: WBC count was higher in males than in females during adulthood, but platelet count was higher in females than in males from puberty onwards (P <0.001). Neutrophil count was the lowest in early childhood and increased with age. Lymphocyte count decreased with age after peaking in early childhood. Eosinophil count was the highest in childhood and higher in males than in females. Monocyte count was higher in males than in females (P <0.001). Conclusions: We provide comprehensive age- and sex-specific RIs for CBC parameters, which show dynamic changes with both age and sex.
Concept of the comfort and fitness becomes a major concern in the basic function of the ready-made clothes. Accordingly a more sophiscated classification of the human morphological characteristics is strongly required for the effective clothing construction. This research was performed to classify and characterize Korean adult males anthropometrically. Sample size was 1290 subjects and their age range was from 19 to 54 years old. Sampling was carried out by the stratified sampling method. Data were collected by the direct anthropometric measurement. 75 variables in total were applied to classify the bodytypes. Data were analyzed by the multivariate method, especially factor and cluster analysis. The high factor loading items extracted by factor analysis were based to determine the variables of the cluster analysis for the similar bodytypes respectively. In the part of the trunk, 19 variables from the data were applied to classify the bodytypes of trunk by Ward's minimum variance method. The groups forming a cluster were subdivided into 5 sets by cross-tabulation extracted by the hierarchical culster analysis. Type 3 and 4 in trunk were composed of the majority of 55.6% of the subjects. The Korean adult males had relatively well-balanced bodytypes in trunk.
This is to investigate the difference between craniofacial correlation of Angle's class III malocclusion and that of normal occlusion. For this investigation, 28 adult males and famales, who have class III malocclusion, and 35 adult males and 46 adult famals., who have normal occlusion were selected to measure actual dimension of cranial base and to investigate ratio of various parts of maxillofacial skeleton against cranial base. Class III malocclusion were, also , classified based on SNA and SNB angle in normal range. Results were as follows. 1. In class III malocclusion, actual dimension of cranial base were appeared to be less than normal occlusion in both sex. 2. In class III malocclusion, values were less than normal occlusion in BN/ptm-A in both sex, but had no significance between two. 3. In class III malocclusion, ramal inclination, mandible inclination, BN/Go-Pog, lower genial angle were appeared to be greater. Thus, characteristic mandibular protrusive appearance of class III malocclusion was due to relative ratio and morphologic characteristic of mandibular body dimension against cranial base. 4. In class III malocclusion, upper incisors were labially tilted and lower incisors were lingually tilted compared to normal occlusion. 5. In typing of class III malocclusion, the most common type was found to be one which maxillas were in normal range, while mandibles were in protrusive tendency.
The purpose of this study was performed to analyze the trend of bodytype change of adult males. Subjects were 1290 Korean adult males and their age range was from 19 to 54 year, ; old. 75 variables(66 variables from the direct anthropometric data and 9 variables from the multiplication method) in total were applied to analyze. The principal component analysis was applied to the data with orthogonal rotation after extraction of major factors. The high factor loading items extracted by factor analysis were analyzed for the trend of bodytype change by the age group respectively. The result of factor analysis indicated that the first factor was composed with about 30 items, girth, depth and width-measures in 4 age groups and was analysed as form factors. Especially, age-related change was caused by increase of waist girth, depth and width. The second factor was composed with about 23 items, length and height-measures in all age groups. Stature has a constant factor loading value in 4 groups. Front and back waist-height and the navel-height have the highest factor loading value. The third, fourth and fifth factors were composed with different variables among the age groups.
Seasonal variation of the population structure and the reproductive pattern of the Korean striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, were investigated. High capture ratios in juveniles, young adult, and old adult mice were found during the period from October to November, from November to March, and from May to September, respectively, and extremely low capture ratios of old adults during the period from November to February were characteristic. It seemed that the young adults that survived during the winter might become older by summer and have been counted as the old adults. The breeding in the mice began earlier in males (from mid February or early March to late October) than in females (from mid March to late October), having a peak in August and September, and both the male and female mice weighing more than 20 g generally reached sexual maturation in general. In the breeding season, both young and old adult males had large testes with enlarged seminiferous tubules filled with numerous germ and Sertoli cells, and expanded caudal epididymides with a vast number of spermatozoa; the females had many Graafian follicles and corpora lutea in large ovaries, and developed uterine glands in the thick endometria. The lower ratios of the testis weight to the body weight in July and August in 1994 compared to 1995 seemed due to the extreme drought and considerably higher temperature in 1994, but the decrease in the ratio in mid-summer, only in the old mice, in both years might be explained partially by aging.
Patent ductus arteriosus in adult is frequently complicated with aneurysm, calcification and pulmonary hypertension. Therefore, surgical treatment of patent ductus arteriosus in adult has some differences from that of infants and children. We have experienced 25 cases of adult patent ductus arteriosus from July 1983 to December 1994. Mean age of the patients was 26.6 years[16-59 years . There were 12 males and 13 females. Exertional dyspnea was the most frequent clinical manifestation. Pulmonary hypertension was present in eight patients. Ligation was done in 20 cases and surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass was done in 5 cases. There was one hospital death, which had a 5x5cm sized main pulmonary artery aneurysm and was operated under cardiopulmonary bypass. Recanalization occured in one patient who received Teflon-felt supported ligation. Although one case of recannalization after ligation was present, we believed the fact that ligation was safe and simple method of operation in adult patent ductus arteriosus without calcification and aneurysm.
