This study was performed to assess the efficacy of surgical treatment with flexible alligator forceps (FAF) on heartworm infected dogs. Twenty dogs (10 males and 10 females) with heartworm infection, age $5.3\pm3.0\;(mean{\pm}S.D.)$ years and weight $9.3\pm6.5(mean{\pm}S.D.)kg$ were treated with FAF. Adult heartworms were removed by fluoroguided technique with FAF under inhalation anesthesia with isoflurane. For evaluation of the efficacy, removal rate and surgical time were measured, and removal sites were found. Antigen ELISA kit test and autopsy were performed to examine remained adult heartworms. Removal rate of total heartworms was $91.4\%$ including 15 complete retrieval cases and surgical time was $30.0\pm7.6(mean{\pm}S.E.)$ minutes. Heartworms were removed from the right ventricle, main pulmonary artery, and right and left pulmonary artery. Surgical treatment with FAF is an effective method with high removal rate, short surgical time, and various removal sites and it could be considered for the removal of adult heartworms in a dog.

The purpose of the present study was to analyze the pulpal tissue reactions to several capping materials. 8 adult Mongrel dogs and 4 different capping materials (G I : Calcium hydroxide, G II : Bonding resin, G III : Glass ionomer liner, G IV : Bioactive ceramic) we-reused in the study. The results can be summarized as follows : 1. The formation of hard tissue barrier was observed to begin after 2 weeks in all groups with various forms or positions. 2. According to the result of statistical analysis, G I and G IV showed significantly higher degree of inflammation than G II, G III in 1-week samples(p<.05). And in 2-week samples, G I showed higher degree of inflammation than G II, G IV with statistical significance(p<.05). Howere, these inflammatory reactions have gradually dimiished with time resulting in negligible difference between groups. 3. No bacterial penetration was observed in any group. 4. Hard tissue formation was evident in all groups after 2 weeks regardless of material type in this experiment. Conclusion can be drawn from the above-mentioned results that the perfect marginal sealing after pulp capping procedure is thought to be the most important factor in determining the propgnosis of direct pulp capping.
The purpose of this study was to examine the tissue response to experimental furcation perforations immediately treated with Super EBA, Ketac Silver, MTA and Emdogain using surgical microscope. Forty experimental furcation perforations were created in the mandibular and maxillary premolars and molars of 4 adult dogs and immediately repaired with experimental materials. The animals were sacrificed after 16 weeks and radiographic and histologic results were evaluated. The results were as follows. 1 All materials tested in this experiment revealed a certain degree of extrusion of the filling materials and infiltration of inflammatory cells into the periodontal space. Except MTA group, epithelial down-growth of the surrounding gingiva was found in all experimental groups. 2. Both Ketac Silver and Emdogain group showed the greatest degree of inflammatory reaction and bone resorption. 3. Super EBA group showed moderate inflammation and newly bone formation under the perforation area. 4. MTA group showed minor inflammation, new bone regeneration toward restorative materials and partially cementum growth onto the surface of the material. This group demonstrated a favorable prognosis.
Two groups of left pulmonary-subclavian artery anastomosis were done in 26 adult mongorel dogs. For the first group. the distal end of the subclnvian artery was nnastomosed to the side of the left pulmonary artery, and for the second group, the subclavian end wns anastomosed to the proximal end of the left lower lobe pulmonary artery. Among them, 6 died of bleeding or anesthetic failure during the day of operation, 10 survived 1 to 106 days and the other 10 were sacrificed at various interval. To investigate the relationship between hemodynamic stress and temporal evolution of the pulmonary vascular lesions. the pulmona try and femoral artery pressures, arteriogram and pathohistological specimens were obtained. The following results were obtained. 1. The postoperative pulmonary artery pressures were within normal limits except 2 dogs in the first group, but in nil 12 dogs of the second group, they were in moderate to maked pulmonary hypertension level. 2 After subclavian pulmonary anastomosis, both groups dogs showed increased femond artery pulse pressure. 3. The pulmonary vascular changes were more severe and appeared earlier in the second group dogs compared with the first group.4. The earliest vascular changes appeared in the media of the small muscular arteries and arterioles. 5. Various vascular chaDges were produced in 2 or 3 months. Thereafter, the changes were stationary. 6. Among the first group, two long-term servivors (No. 705 & 713) which had normal pulmonary artery pressure under the anesthesia, also showed various vascular changes as other pulmonary hypertensive dogs. 7. In the early stage medial hypertrophy. interruptio~l of elastic lamellae were found in the small muscular arteries and arterioles, which were followed by intimal proliferation and thrombosis. These findings may suggest some evidences of trauma to the vessels. 8. Pulmonary arteriograms showed irregularity of the intima of the large and medium sized arteries, abrupt ending of some of the small arteries and narrowing of the anastomosis.
Arthrostoma miyazakiense (Nematoda: Ancylostomatidae) is a hookworm species reported from the small intestines of raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Japan. Five Korean raccoon dogs (N. procyonoides koreensis) caught from 2002 to 2005 in Jeollanam-do (Province), a southeastern area of South Korea, contained helminth eggs belonging to 4 genera (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and Capillaria spp.) and cysts of Giardia sp. in their feces. Necropsy findings of 1 raccoon dog revealed a large number of adult hookworms in the duodenum. These hookworms were identified as Arthrostoma miyazakiense based on the 10 articulated plates observed in the buccal capsule and the presence of right-sided prevulval papillae. Eggs of A. miyazakiense were $60-65{\times}35-40{\mu}m$ (av, $62.5{\times}35{\mu}m$), and were morphologically indistinguishable from those of Ancyiostoma caninum. The eggs were cultured to infective 2nd stage larvae via charcoal culture, and 100 infective larvae were used to experimentally infect each of 3 mixed-bred puppies. All puppies harbored hookworm eggs in their feces on the 12th day after infection. This is the first report thus far concerning A. miyazakiense infections in raccoon dogs in Korea, and the first such report outside of Japan.
In veterinary medicine, a variety of disease are known to cause coagulation abnormalities. Identification of these coagulation abnormalities have been relied on traditional coagulation assays(platelet concentration, aPTT, PT, D-dimer, fibrinogen) which take only a small part of the coagulation pathways rather than global hemostatic capacity. Among of the hypercoagulable diseases, cardiovascular disease, such as mitral valvular disease, was not regarded as the cause of the hypercoagulability. The value of a thromboelastography (TEG) as an early predictor of coagulopathy, especially hypercoagulability, has been founded. It was associated with decreased R and K values, and increased MA and α angle. The objective of this study was to compare thromboelastography results and those of traditional coagulation tests between twenty adult dogs with mitral insufficiency (MVI group) and eleven adult healthy dogs (Healthy group). As a results, MA values in the patients with mitral insufficiency (68.8±7.8 mm) were significantly higher than the normal patients (60.4±4.8 mm) (P value<0.05). Although a little report has been reported in veterinary medicine, platelet activation seems to be related with hypercoagulability in MVI patients in human medicine. The result of this report can support this pathophysiology in veterinary medicine. In addition to traditional coagulation assay, global assessment of coagulopathy using TEG, especially ability to detect hypercoagulability, may be useful for customized treatment in MVI patients. To achieve this, further study is needed to define pathophysiology and effect of medication.
Most adults, unlike growing children, have some periodontal problems which can influence the outcome of the orthodontic treatment. In cases where periodontal disease progression resulted in marked reduction of periodontium, orthodontic treatment could result in the worsening of the periodontal conditions, and therefore orthodontic treatment planning in such adult patients requires special considerations for the periodontal problems. This study investigates the effects of horizontal orthodontic tooth movement on the changes in the mesial, distal and furcation areas of the disease affected periodontium of adult dogs with advanced bone loss. Six adult dogs with healthy periodontium were selected, and mandibular 2nd premolars were extracted. In the mandibular 3rd premolars, angular bony defects in the mesial and distal sides, and horizontal bony defects in the furcation areas were created. Those that received the flap operation and plaque control were designated as the control, those that had horizontal tooth movement without plaque control after the flap operation as Experimental group I, those that had horizontal tooth movement under plaque control without the flap operation as Experimental group II, and those that had horizontal tooth movement under plaque control after the flap operation as Experimental group III. The control group was sacrificed 2 months postoperatively, and the experimental groups were sacrificed 5 months after the initiation of tooth movement. Specimens were histologically analyzed under light microscope. The results were as follows; 1. After the horizontal tooth movements, Experimental group I and II showed angular bony defects in the mesial sides of the roots and the distal side of the furcation areas, which correspond to the pressure sides. 2. After the horizontal tooth movements, Experimental group I and II showed decreased level of alveolar bone crest in the distal sides of the roots, which correspond to the tension sides. 3. Long junctional epithelium in the control group has not been replaced by periodontal connective tissue after the horizontal tooth movements. 4. Limited formation of new bone was observed in the angular bony defects in the mesial and distal aspects of the roots in the control group. 5. Inflammatory cell infiltration in the connective tissue was most severe in the Experimental group I, followed by Experimental group II, III, and the control group in that order. These results seem to indicate that plaque control was the most influencing factor in the alteration of the periodontal tissue after the horizontal tooth movements in the periodontal tissue with alveolar bone defects.
This study was conducted to determine the protein requirement level in adult Jindo dog (Korea Jindo Dog) through nitrogen balance experiments. 12 female dogs aged 36~38 weeks old (for early stage) or aged 45~49 weeks old (for late stage) were fed one of 3 diets containing 17, 19 and 21% of crude protein. Body weight of dogs were measured during the 12 days of feeding trial, and feces and urine were collected last 3 days of the trial period. In early stage of Jindo dog, average daily gain of dogs fed experimental diets containing 17, 19 and 21% of crude protein were -38.33, -16.25 and -12.71g/d, respectively. There was a significant differences between 17 and 21% of crude protein treatments (p<0.05) and calculated retained nitrogen were -0.29, -0.04 and -0.03g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d, respectively. In late stage of Jindo dog, average daily gain of dogs fed experimental diets containing 17, 19 and 21% of crude protein were -34.05, -28.71 and -28.28g/d, and calculated retained nitrogen were -0.33, -0.06 and 0.09g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d, respectively, and were significantly higher (p<0.05) in dogs fed 21% of crude protein diet than those of other dogs. In early stage and late stage of adult Jindo dog, a calculated linear regression equation for nitrogen intake (x) and nitrogen retention (y) were y = 0.7484x-1.18 ($R^2$ = 0.9923) and y = 0.88231x-1.0894 ($R^2$ = 0.9982) and the requirement of crude protein were estimated as 9.85g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d and 7.72g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d from above equation.
The present study was performed to observe the ultrastructure of the integument of adult Paragonimus westermani. Dogs experimentally infected with 60 metacercariae of F. westermani were autopsied 4 months after the infection. Adult p. westermani were extracted from the dogs and the fine structure was studied by means of scanning and transmission electron microscope. The findings are as follows: 1. Scanning electron microscopic findings showed that the spines and the papillae are distributed at whole body surface but the well developed spines or papaillae are shown around the oral sucker and ventral sucker. 2. At the end of the body, excretory pore was found, the shape was irregular. 3. Transmission electron microscopic findings showed that plasma membrane, tegument, basal lamina, connective tissue, circular muscle layer, longitudinal muscle layer. nerve axon and tegumental cell were observed. 4. In higher magnification, plasma membrance and bar-shaped granules were found at the outer surface of the tegument.

To study the possibility of attraction magnetic forces to expand maxillary arch, we used 2 big adult dogs, 2 small puppies, 1 small adult dog as experiments, and 1 small adult dog as a control. We measured the intercanine width and intermolar width and histologically observed in the suture and cervical and apex region of teeth and took occlusal X-rays to observe separation of suture line in the maxilla. The results were as follows: 1. Expansion velocities of intercanine (0.25mm/day) and intermolar widths (0.23mm/day) in puppies were faster than those (0.135mm/day, 0.09mm/day) in adults. 2. In all experiments in adults (0.135mm/day) and puppies (0.25mm/day), expansion velocity of intercanine widths were faster than those (0.09mm/day, 0.23mm/day) of intermolar width. 3. In all experiments ectatic changes were observed and cellularities of fibroblast increased in the suture line. Only in adults dogs the separations of palatal suture were observed in the occlusal X-ray view. 4. In the puppies bony deposition was particularly observed in the suture line and micro-bony fragments were often observed. 5. In the all experiments no root resorption was observed in the cervical and root area, but normal root resorption due to eruption of permanent teeth was observed in the puppies.
