There have been reports of successful bone formation with sinus floor elevation by simply elevating the maxillary sinus membrane and filling the sinus cavity below the lifted sinus membrane with a blood clot. But, in a review of the current literature, we found no animal study that substantiated blood clot's ability in this respect. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the method of maxillary sinus floor augmentation using the patient's own venous blood in conjunction with a sinus membrane elevation procedure. An implant was placed bilaterally in the maxillary sinus of six adult mongrel dogs so that it protruded 8 mm into the maxillary sinus after sinus membrane elevation. On one side of the maxillary sinus, the resultant space between the membrane and the sinus floor was filled with autologous venous blood retrieved from the dog. On the opposite side, the maxillary sinus was left untreated as a control. The implants were left in place for six months. The mean height of the newly formed bone in the sinus was 3.7 mm on the side without venous blood and 3.5 mm on the side with venous blood (p>0.05). There was no difference between the two sides regarding new bone height in the sinus. Our results indicate that filling the space between the lifted sinus membrane and the sinus floor with venous blood has no effect on bone formation around implants placed in the maxillary sinus cavity.

Purpose: Distraction osteogenesis has been applied to the maxillofacial implantology and good experimental and clinical results have been reported. However, histologic studies of implants placement on distraction osteogenesis of atrophic alveolar ridges are scarce. In this study, we compare the bone formation between in the transport part and in the distraction part by histomorphometric analysis. Materials & methods: Three adult beagle dogs were served as experimental subjects. The 2 premolars and 1st molar were extracted on the Lt. side of mandible in each beagle dog. After one month later, osteotomy was performed and distraction device was adapted. Distraction was performed with gradual incremental separation of two bone pieces at a rate of 1.0mm per day for 5 days. During consolidation phase, new bone was formed in the distraction zone between the separated bone pieces. 5 weeks after distraction phase, 3 implants were placed in each beagle dog. The implants were inserted through transport part and distraction part and inferior basal bone. The animals were sacrificed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks after implant placement. BIC and BA of implants on distraction part and transport part were measured histomorphometrically. Results: BIC, BA increased after implant placement as time goes by passes and new bone formation was slightly higher in transport part than in distraction part at 2 weeks, 4 weeks after implant placement. At 12 weeks after implant placement, BIC, BA of were 74%, 61% in transport part and 77%, 59% in distraction part, therefore there were no difference in BIC and BA between transport part and distraction part at 12 weeks after implant placement.
In order to evaluate the effect of platelet-derived growth factor(PDGF-BB) and guided tissue regeneration(GTR) technique on the regeneration of destructed periodontal tissue, intentional through-and-through furcation defects(4mm in height) were made on both mandibular 2nd and 4th premolars of 8 adult male dogs(30-40lb). Experimental group 1 was composed of the premolars that were treated by only topical application of PDGF-BB with 0.05M acetic acid without any barrier membrane. Experimental group 2 was composed of the premolars that were treated by GTR with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane(ePTFE : Gore-tex periodontal material, USA). Experimental group 3 was composed of the premolars that were treated by GTR with ePTFE after topical application of PDGFBE. Control group was composed of the premolars that were treated by coronally positioned flap operation only without use of PDGF-BB and ePTFE membrane. All ePTFE membranes were carefully removed 4 weeks after regenerative surgery, and all experimental animals were sacrificed 8 weeks after regenerative surgery. The light microscopic findings were as follows ; (1) In experimental group 1, rapid new bone formation along the-root surface with multiple ankylosis and root resorption by multinucleated giant cells, and dense connective tissue in the central portion of the furcation defects were observed. (2) In experimental group 2, it was observed that the furcation defects were filled with newly formed bone, Sharpey's fibers were embedded into new cementum on root dentin of furcation fornix area, but the central portion and the area under furcation fornix were still filled with dense connective tissue. (3) In experimental group 3, the furcation defects were regenerated with newly formed dense bone and regular periodontal ligament with Sharpey's fibers embedded into newly formed cementum and bone underneath fornix area. (4) In control group, unoccupied space, apical migration of epithelium, dense infiltration of inflammatory cells in subepithelial connective tissue in relation to heavy plaque accumulation, and root resorption by inflammatory reaction were shown, but any new cementum formation on resorbed dentin surface could not be observed. The present study demonstrated that the combined therapy of PDGF-BB and GTR could enhance the regeneration of destructed periodontal tissue.

The genus Spirometra belongs to the family Diphyllobothriidae and order Pseudophyllidea, and includes intestinal parasites of cats and dogs. In this study, a plerocercoid labeled as Spirometra mansonoides from the USA was examined for species identification and phylogenetic analysis using 2 complete mitochondrial genes, cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 3 (nad3). The cox1 sequences (1,566 bp) of the plerocercoid specimen (USA) showed 99.2% similarity to the reference sequences of the plerocercoid of Korean Spirometra decipiens (GenBank no. KJ599679), and 99.1% similarity in regard to nad3 (346 bp). Phylogenetic tree topologies generated using 4 analytical methods were identical and showed high confidence levels with bootstrap values of 1.00, 100%, 100%, and 100% for Bayesian inference (BI), maximum-likelihood (ML), neighbor-joining (NJ), and maximum parsimony (MP) methods, respectively. Representatives of Diphyllobothrium and Spirometra species formed a monophyletic group, and the sister-genera status between these species was well supported. Trapezoic proglottids in the posterior 1/5 region of an adult worm obtained from an experimentally infected cat were morphologically examined. The outer uterine loop of the uterus coiling characteristically consisted of 2 complete turns. The results clearly indicated that the examined Spirometra specimen from the USA matched to S. decipiens very well, and indicated possible presence of the life cycle of this species in this region.
Paragonimus harinasutai metacercariae were found in a species of freshwater crab, Indochinamon ou, collected in a small stream of Namback District, Luang Prabang Province, Lao PDR. Adult flukes were recovered after experimental infection of the metacercariae to dogs. Metacercariae were round or slightly elliptical, $0.666{\times}0.626\;mm$ in average size, and had a thin cyst wall of about $20{\mu}m$ in thickness, a black excretory bladder, convoluted ceca, and some pinkish materials in the body. Adults were somewhat elongated, $95.2{\times}36.5\;mm$ in average size, covered with single-tipped tegumental spines, had a smaller oral sucker than the ventral sucker, a moderately branched ovary, and 5-6 lobulated testes. Eggs were ovoid and bilaterally symmetrical in shape, $79{\times}45{\mu}m$ in average size, and had a uniformly thickened shell. By the present study, it has been confirmed that I. ou is a new second intermediate host for P. harinasutai.
Casting specimens of portal system and hepatic vein system in livers were made by injection of vinylite into the portal vein and postcava in 20 adult dogs. The author classificated the ramification of portal system and hepatic vein system. The results obtained were summerized as follows: 1. Portal system in livers were divided into left and right trunks. The left trunk subdivided into papillary process (caudate lobe,) left medial lobe, left lateral lobe, quadrate lobe and right medial lobe rami. The right trunk were subdivided into right lateral lobe and caudate proccss(caudate lobe.) 2. The lateral superior and medial inferior rami of portal system in left lateral lobe were subdivided 1 or 2 branches from left trunk. 3. The lateral superior ramus of portal system in left medial lobe did not appeared in 40% of the cases examined. 4. Portal system in quadrate lobe were subdivided 1-3 branches from left trunk, 5. Portol system in right medial lobe rami were relatively simple in ramification. 6. The lateral superior and medial inferior rami of portal system in right lateral lobe were subdivided 1 or 2 branches from right trunk. 7. Hepatic vein system of left lateral, left medial, quadrate and right medial lobe rami were originated from same ramus divided from the postcava in all cases. 8. Hepatic vein system of left and right rami in right medial lobe were divided from postcava.

The present study examined the histological characteristics of adult testis in the long-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus capensis) from Korean waters and the localization of DEAD-box polypeptide 4 (DDX4; a germ cell marker) and vimentin (a Sertoli cell marker) expression in the dolphin testis compared with that in terrestrial mammals, including dogs and rats. The seminiferous tubules of dolphin testis have very small or completely closed lumens, and spermatogenic cells and Sertoli cells within the tubules cannot be differentiated. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that, in the dolphin testis, DDX4- and vimentin-positive cells were scattered extensively within the tubule, whereas in the dog and rat testis, DDX4 immunoreactivity was localized in spermatogenic cells of the adluminal compartment, and vimentin immunoreactivity was localized in Sertoli cells of the basal compartment in the seminiferous epithelium. These results suggest that the histological characteristics of the seminiferous tubules in the dolphin testis differ from those of terrestrial species.
Four feral cats and a raccoon dog purchased from a local collector on Aphaedo Island, Shinan-gun, where human Gymnophalloides seoi infections are known to be prevalent, were examined for their intestinal helminth parasites. From 2 of 4 cats, a total of 310 adult G. seoi specimens were recovered, Other helminths detected in cats included Heterophyes nocens (1,527 specimens), Pygidiopsis summa (131), Stictodora fuscata (4), Acanthotrema felis (2), Spirometra erinacei (15), toxocarids (4), and a hookworm (1). A raccoon dog was found to be infected with a species of echinostome (55), hook-worms (7), toxocarids (3), P. summa (3), and S. erinacei (1). No G. seoi was found in the raccoon dog. The results indicate that feral cats and raccoon dogs on Aphaedo are natural definitive hosts for intestinal trematodes and cestodes, including G. seoi, H. nocens, and S. erinacei, It has been first confirmed that cats, a mammalian species other than humans, play the role of a natural definitive host for G. seoi on Aphaedo Island.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of constant direct current electrical stimulation in healing the bone defects and surrounding tissues of the endo-oseous(TPS-IMZ) implants. Implants were inserted in the femur of adult dogs. Then a constrant direct current of approximately $10{\mu}A$ was applied. Artificial bone defects were prepared on one side of the implant site. Experimental groups were divided into 4 : control group : bone defect without treatment group I : bone defect filled with hydroxyapatite powders group II : bone defect, in which a negative and positive electrodes were inserted 5mm apart from both sides of the implant group III : bone defect, in which negative current was directly connected to the IMZ implant and a positive electrode was placed 10mm apart from the implant The animals were sacrificed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 8th week after implantation for the light microscopic examination. The results obtained were as follows : 1. In electrically stimulated experimental groups, new bone formation and osseointegration around implants were accelerated. 2. Group III showed the greatest activity in new bone formation. Osteoconductivity around HA particles was observed in group 1. 3. The defect area of the control group was healed by forming new bone, which grew from the underlying cancellous bone. The defect areas of the electrically stimulated experimental groups were healed by newly formed bone, which grew upward from the cancellous bone and downward from the periosteum. 4. 8 weeks after implantation, all the groups showed good osseointegration between the surrounding bone and implants.
There has been many attempts to develop a method that can regenerate periodontal tissues that were lost due to periodontal diseasd, but none of them was completely successful. This study was designed to investigate the healing and regeneration of periodontal tissue when bone substitutes such as porous replamineform hydroxyapatite and porous resorbable calcium carbonate were used in combination with oxidized cellulose membrane and collagen absorbable hemostat, compared to a control where only oxidized cellulose membrane or collagen absorbable hemostat were used. Chronic periodontitis was induced on mandibular premolars of and adult dog by placing orthodontic elastic ligatures for 10 weeks. After flap operation, the control group were received oxidized cellulose membrane (control- I )or collagen absorbable hemostat (control- II) only, while one experimental group was given either porous replamineform hydroxyapatite or porous resorbable calcium carbonate in addition to oxidized cellulose membrane (Experimental I-A, I-B), and another experimental group was treated by using either porous replamineform hydroxyapatite or porous resorbable calcium carbonate in addition to collagen absorbable hemostat. (Experimental II-A, II-B) After 56 weeks, healing was histologically analyzed with the following results. 1. Apical migration of junctional epithelium was observed only in areas coronal to the notch for both control and experimental group. 2. Inflammatory cell infiltration was not observed in any groups. 3. Oxidized cellulose membrane and collagen absorbable hemostat were completely resorbed. 4. Newly-formed cementum was observed up to the level where junctional epithelium was located, for both control and experimental groups. 5. Bone formation was limited of the middle portion of the notch in the control group, where as experimental groups showed bone formation up to the level of implant materials coronal to the notch. 6. Minute resorption of apically located portions of implanted materials was observed in experimental group I-B and II-B only.
