  • Death and dying of human being is a comprehensive system, and death orientation, the subjective meaning related to every component of the death system is developed throughout life. This study was designed and carried out to identify, describe and classify the orientations of Korean adult towards the death system. In an attempt to measure the subjective meaning of death and dying, unstructured Q-methodology was used. The 65 Q-statements developed by Kim(1994), used by Kim(1994) and Park(1996) were adopted as Q-population and 39 Q-statements were selected by the three researchers for Q-items for this study. Thirty-three P-samples were sampled from P-population of literate Korean men and women, 35 and 55 years of age, lived in urban Korea for the last 10 years. Sortings of the 39 Q-items according to the level of personal agreement, and a forced normal distribution into the 9 levels were carried out by the P-samples. The Z-scores of the Q-sort data were computed, and the principal components factor analysis by PC-QUANL Program were carried out. The demographic, socio-cultural and health-related attributes of the P-samples were descriptively analysed. Eight types of death orientation were identified ; Type I ; 'naturalist'. Six P-samples. Death is a natural phenomena, to be accepted as it is and to follow its natural course. Prefer to be informed of all facts and possibilities concernig the course of dying and death to occur to self. Type II ; 'life-after-life negator'. Three P-samples. Time and process of death is the destiny of each person. Death means 'darkness' and 'end to every thing, the absolute end'. Yet, wish physical integrity at the dying and after death. Type III ; 'life-after-life believer'. Six P-samples. Men are travellers passing by this life bound to the life-after-life. Priority concerns are on the activities to prepare self for the eternal life ahead. Disregard premature and sudden death. Type IV ; 'here-now believer' Five P-samples. Positive regard to the cremation of the body and donation of the organs on death. Regard religious and customary post-motem rituals meaningless. Negate life-after life. Type V; 'believer of rituals'. Five P-samples. Death being accepted as a part of, a natural end to, and destiny of human life. Concerned to ensure a dignified end to personal life and dignified post-mortem rituals. Type VI ; 'Realist'(derived from Type I). Two P-samples. Life and death as universal reality. The abrupt death at golden age at the peak of happiness is favored to avoid inevitable physical and mental distress of self and the family. Agreed to the cremation of the body. Disregard rituals. Type VII : 'Fatalist' (derived from Type II). Five P-samples. Not favored, yet, all man are destined to death, the inevitable end of all living beings. To ensure dignified end by personal consummation, information on one's dying and imminent death are to be shared. Type VIII ; 'reality avoider'(derived from Type III). One P-sample. Negative to longevity, artificial prolongation of, meaningless and distressful life. Highly positive to postmortem organ donation.

  • The renowned Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory is not applicable to quantification of time-rate settlement for highly deformable soft clays such as dredged soil deposits. To deal with this special condition, a non-linear finite strain consolidation theory should be adopted to predict the settlement of dredged soil deposits including self-weight and surcharge-induced consolidation. It is of importance to determine the zero effective stress void ratio ($e_{00}$), which is the void ratio at effective stress equal to zero, and the relationships of void ratio-effective stress and of void ratio-hydraulic conductivity for characterizing non-linear finite strain consolidation behavior for deformable dredged soil deposits. The zero effective stress void ratio means a transitional status from sedimentation to self-weight consolidation of dredged soils. In this paper, laboratory procedures and equipments are introduced to measure such key parameters in the non-linear finite strain consolidation analysis. In addition, the non-linear finite strain consolidation parameters of the Incheon clay and kaolinite are evaluated with the aid of the proposed methods in this paper, which will be used as input parameters for the non-linear finite strain consolidation analyses being performed in the companion paper.

  • Unique and invariant biometric characteristics have been used for secure user authentication. Storing original biometric data is not acceptable due to privacy and security concerns of biometric technology. In order to enhance the security of the biometric data, the cancelable biometrics was introduced. Using revocable and non-invertible transformation, the cancelable biometrics can provide a way of more secure biometric authentication. In this paper, we present a new cancelable bits extraction method for the facial data. For the feature extraction, the Subpattern-based Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is adopted. The Subpattern-based PCA divides a whole image into a set of partitioned subpatterns and extracts principle components from each subpattern area. The feature extracted by using Subpattern-based PCA is discretized with a helper data based method. The elements of the obtained bits are evaluated and ordered according to a measure based on the fisher criterion. Finally, the most discriminative bits are chosen as the biometric bits string and used for authentication of each identity. Even if the generated bits string is compromised, new bits string can be generated simply by changing the helper data. Because, the helper data utilizes partial information of the feature, the proposed method does not reveal privacy sensitive biometric information of the user. For a security evaluation of the proposed method, a scenario in which the helper is compromised by an adversary is also considered.

  • Since the transmittance of solar radiation directly affected by the structural frames of greenhouse can be changed according to the ratio of diffuse to direct radiations, it is necessary to investigate the transmittance of greenhouse at the different weather conditions. We can easily get the data of total solar radiation from the Meteorological Administration, but we have to personally measure the photosynthetic photon flux (PPF). If the relationship between total solar radiation and PPF is established, the PPF can be simply acquired from the relationship. Sol it is required to develop the equation to calculate PPF depending on weather condition. This study was conducted to determine the transmittance of PPF at canopy level in glasshouse and the correlation between total solar radiation and PPF at clear and cloudy days. The variation phase of greenhouse transmittance at clear day was very different from that at cloudy day. It was concluded that the proper transmittance, depending on the weather condition, should be adopted to calculate the accurate total solar radiation and PPF in greenhouse. The transmittance of solar radiation was the same as that of PPF in greenhouse. It was confirmed that the ratio of PPF to total radiation increased as the amount of cloud increased. The correlation between the hourly total solar radiation and PPF was derived.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the differences in affective characteristics and mathematical reasoning ability between gifted students and non-gifted students. This study compares and analyzes on the relations between the affective characteristics and mathematical reasoning ability. The study subjects are comprised of 97 gifted fifth grade students and 144 non-gifted fifth grade students. The criterion is based on the questionnaire of the affective characteristics and mathematical reasoning ability. To analyze the data, t-test and multiple regression analysis were adopted. The conclusions of the study are synthetically summarized as follows. First, the mathematically gifted students show a positive response to subelement of the affective characteristics, self-conception, attitude, interest, study habits. As a result of analysis of correlation between the affective characteristic and mathematical reasoning ability, the study found a positive correlation between self-conception, attitude, interest, study habits but a negative correlation with mathematical anxieties. Therefore the more an affective characteristics are positive, the higher the mathematical reasoning ability are built. These results show the mathematically gifted students should be educated to be positive and self-confident. Second, the mathematically gifted students was influenced with mathematical anxieties to mathematical reasoning ability. Therefore we seek for solution to reduce mathematical anxieties to improve to the mathematical reasoning ability. Third, the non-gifted students that are influenced of interest of the affective characteristics will improve mathematical reasoning ability, if we make the methods to be interested math curriculum.

  • Objective: To explore the inhibiting effect and mechanism of Endostar injection concomitant with cryoablation on lung adenocarcinoma A549 xenografts in nude mice. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 nude mice with subcutaneous xenografts of the A549 cell line were established and divided into 4 groups when the maximal diameters of tumors became 1 cm: control group, Endostar group, cryoablation group and combination group (Endostar concomitant with cryoablation). The nude mice were sacrificed after 21-days treatment, tumour tissues were removed to measure their volume, in situ test of TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) was adopted to determine the cellular apoptosis around freezing injury zones, and immunohistochemical SP test was applied for the detection of micro-vessel density (MVD) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression levels. Results: At 21-days after treatment, the growth velocities of control group, Endostar group, cryoablation group and combination group were $236.7{\pm}51.2%$, $220.0{\pm}30.6%$, $159.5{\pm}29.3%$ and $103.3{\pm}25.5%$ (P<0.01), while cellular apoptosis rates of tumors were $21.7{\pm}2.34%$, ($22.17{\pm}1.47$)%, $38.3{\pm}1.37%$ and $49.2{\pm}1.72%$, (P<0.01), respectively, according to the immunohistochemical test. MVD and VEGF expression levels in the combination group were both lower than in other groups (P<0.01), also being positively related (r=0.925, P<0.01). Conclusions: Endostar can significantly improve the inhibitory effects of cryoablation on xenografts of lung adenocarcinoma A549, and the mechanism is probably associated with its function as an inhibitor of tumour neo-angiogenesis through down-regulating VEGF expression.

  • This paper present a new face recognition method based on LVQ neural net to construct a real time face recognition system. The previous researches which used PCA, LDA combined neural net usually need much time in training neural net. The supervised LVQ neural net needs much less time in training and can maximize the separability between the classes. In this paper, the proposed method transforms the input face image by PCA and LDA sequentially into low-dimension feature vectors and recognizes the face through LVQ neural net. In order to make the system robust to external light variation, light compensation is performed on the detected face by max-min normalization method as preprocessing. PCA and LDA transformations are applied to the normalized face image to produce low-level feature vectors of the image. In order to determine the initial centers of LVQ and speed up the convergency of the LVQ neural net, the K-Means clustering algorithm is adopted. Subsequently, the class representative vectors can be produced by LVQ2 training using initial center vectors. The face recognition is achieved by using the euclidean distance measure between the center vector of classes and the feature vector of input image. From the experiments, we can prove that the proposed method is more effective in the recognition ratio for the cases of still images from ORL database and sequential images rather than using conventional PCA of a hybrid method with PCA and LDA.

  • The aim of this study Is to develop a simple and fast method which computes in-vivo doses from transmission doses measured doting patient treatment using an ionization chamber. Energy fluence and the dose that reach the chamber positioned behind the patient is modified by three factors: patient attenuation, inverse square attenuation. and scattering. We adopted a straightforward empirical approach using a phantom transmission factor (PTF) which accounts for the contribution from all three factors. It was done as follows. First of all, the phantom transmission factor was measured as a simple ratio of the chamber reading measured with and without a homogeneous phantom in the radiation beam according to various field sizes($r_p$), phantom to chamber distance($d_g$) and phantom thickness($T_p$). Secondly, we used the concept of effective field to the cases with inhomogeneous phantom (patients) and irregular fields. The effective field size is calculated by finding the field size that produces the same value of PTF to that for the irregular field and/or inhomogeneous phantom. The hypothesis is that the presence of inhomogeneity and irregular field can be accommodated to a certain extent by altering the field size. Thirdly, the center dose at the prescription depth can be computed using the new TMR($r_{p,eff}$) and Sp($r_{p,eff}$) from the effective field size. After that, when TMR(d, $r_{p,eff}$) and SP($r_{p,eff}$) are acquired. the tumor dose is as follows. $$D_{center}=D_t/PTF(d_g,\;T_p){\times}(\frac{SCD}{SAD})^2{\times}BSF(r_o){\times}S_p(r_{p,eff}){\times}TMR(d,\;r_{p,eff})$$ To make certain the accuracy of this method, we checked the accuracy for the following four cases; in cases of regular or irregular field size, inhomogeneous material included, any errors made and clinical situation. The errors were within 2.3% for regular field size, 3.0% irregular field size, 2.4% when inhomogeneous material was included in the phantom, 3.8% for 6 MV when the error was made purposely, 4.7% for 10 MV and 1.8% for the measurement of a patient in clinic. It is considered that this methode can make the quality control for dose at the time of radiation therapy because it is non-invasive that makes possible to measure the doses whenever a patient is given a therapy as well as eliminates the problem for entrance or exit dose measurement.

  • In this study, the centrifuge tests were performed to investigate the lateral flow behavior and stability of the ground improved by SCP. The centrifuge tests were fulfilled in the case of the back of abutment filled by EPS (case 1) and soil (case 2), and the potentiometer was installed on the abutment and embankment to measure the vertical and horizontal displacement at the top of abutment. As a result, the vertical displacement measured at the back of abutment was maximum 2.1 m, which was about 12% if compared with the height of embankment. In the case of the back of abutment filled by soil, the vertical and horizontal displacement measured at the top of abutment was 10 cm and 1.1 m, respectively, which exceeded the allowable horizontal displacement. On the other hand, in the case of the back of abutment filled by EPS, the vertical displacement of abutment did nor occur and the horizontal displacement was 1.4 cm. Therefore, the effect of SCP improvement with EPS method adopted to prevent the lateral flow and assure the stability of embankment on the soft ground was far superior.

  • Objectives : To evaluate and summarize the efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment (AT) in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Methods : Fifteen databases (Pubmed, Cochrane, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, CNKI, Wanfang, and eight Korean databases) were searched up to September 2016. Only trials in which acupuncture was the sole treatment were included. Fatigue was used as the primary outcome measure, while the quality of life, pain, mood disorders, and adverse events were used as secondary outcome measures. We adopted three classifications: AT vs Sham AT, AT vs Wait-list, AT vs Western medication. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the methodological quality. Results : A total of 11 randomized controlled trials involving 869 participants were identified. In comparison with Sham AT, AT significantly alleviated fatigue and pain, but no conclusions about the quality of life and mood disorders could be drawn. In the Wait-list group and Western medication groups, patients with CFS might feel less fatigued following acupuncture treatment, but the evidence was insufficient due to lack of study. Nine of 11 RCTs (81.8%) reported adverse events and there were two cases of mild subcutaneous hemorrhage, but no serious adverse cases. Conclusion : This review found evidence that patients with CFS may generally benefit from alleviation of symptoms by acupuncture treatment, and there is no evidence of worsening symptoms or causing of serious adverse events. A positive effect on fatigue and pain was observed, but no conclusion for improving quality of life and mood disorders.
