Objectives : This study was conducted in order to investigate the percentage of adolescents who brush their teeth after lunch and its related factors using raw data from the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods : In order to extract adolescents to be subjected to this study, 300 adolescents between the age of 12 to 18 who are currently attending junior and senior high school were chosen out of a total of 4,594 subjects. The results from the health surveys and the oral checkup results from the medical examination conducted on these adolescents were analyzed. Results : 1. The percentage of adolescents who brush their teeth after lunch was 33.9%. 2. The percentage of the adolescents who brush their teeth after lunch differed significantly according to the gender (p<0.001), age (p<0.05), the time of their recent visit to the dentist (p<0.05), and whether they had suffered from permanent tooth caries (p<0.05). 3. The factors which affect whether the adolescents brush their teeth after lunch was their gender, the total number of the times they brush their teeth per day, and their age. Conclusions : Effective oral health education methods should be reinforced in order to increase the percentage of the adolescents who brush their teeth after lunch.
This study examined the effects of eco-system factors on adolescents' suicidal ideation and whether self-esteem and depression mediate in the process to provide theoretical basis for prevention and treatment for problems of adolescents who have suicidal ideation. 2,088 high school students were asked to complete self-administering questionnaires on eco-system factors and adolescents' suicidal ideation. Data were analyzed with frequencies, t-test, ANOVA with Scheffe ad-hoc test, correlation analysis using SPSS 12.0 program and AMOS 5.0 program. Study results were ; First, adolescents' suicidal ideation showed significant differences according to their gender, socio-economic financial status, family structure, and the type of school they attended. Second, self-esteem and depression were proved to have significant mediating effect. Child abuse victimization, subjective school achievement and influence of media coverage of celebrity suicide were most important variables which influenced adolescents' suicidal ideation. These results reinforce importance of understanding adolescents' suicidal ideation with eco-system perspective. Moreover, prevention programs for adolescents' suicide require differentiated strategies and tactics according to the target group characteristics.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social support, life satisfaction, and school-related adjustments of adolescents. The participants were 260 junior high school students (140 male and 120 female students) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on social support, life satisfaction, and school-related adjustments. The collected data were analyzed using basic descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and a multiple regression analysis. Baron and Kenny's method was used and examined, and the Sobel test was performed to determine the mediating model's significance. It was adapted to SPSS ver. 19.0 for Windows. The major findings were as follows: first, social support (parents/teacher/friend) was positively correlated with the adolescents' school-related adjustment. Second, the adolescents' life satisfaction was also positively correlated with the adolescents' school-related adjustments. In addition, social support was positively correlated with life satisfaction. It was further found that the adolescents' life satisfaction tended to play a perfectly/partially mediating role between social support and school-related adjustment; that is, social support (parents/teacher/friend) was shown to have not only a direct effect, but also an indirect effect through the adolescents' life satisfaction, on the school-related adjustments. These results clearly indicated that adolescents' life satisfaction plays a crucial role in the relationship between social support and the adolescents' school-related adjustments.

This study intends examine the relevance of factors with negative influences on anti-social sexual awareness formation in adolescents as per the concern of the parents of families with adolescents, as internet pornography exposure in adolescents lead to excessive indulgence in pornographic photographs, cartoons, videos, or fictions, or in video chatting with exposure of one's own body parts. For this, the factors of internet pornography exposure in the study subjects of adolescents were constructed into a multilateral model, and the structural equation model was analyzed. As the result of the study, the following conclusion were drawn. First, the most powerful factor influencing the anti-social sexual awareness in adolescents was, contrary to the concern of many, not the exposure to pornography through internet media, but personal characteristics such as sensation-seeking tendency and socio-environmental characteristic of differential association. Second, it is worth noting that the most major factor influencing intentional internet pornography exposure by adolescents is another form of pornography exposure. Third, whether intentional or unintentional, the internet-related variable influencing the internet pornography exposure was found to be the amount of internet usage. Fourth, the unintended internet pornography exposure was found to have no direct influence on the sexual awareness of adolescents, but it did have an indirect influence on sexual awareness mediated by intentional internet pornography exposure and existing-media pornography exposure. Based on these study results, the conclusion was drawn regarding the influence of internet pornography on sexual awareness in adolescents.
The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between the physical environment and mental health of the adolescents in urban and rural areas. This study was performed using the questionnaire survey method. The research subjects were high school students in Seoul and Jeollabuk-do rural areas. The questionnaire inquired about the housing, neighborhood, and school environments, and these contents were depended on previous studies. The survey was conducted from August 27 to September 6, 2013, and 446 data were collected. They were analyzed with the SPSS 12.0 program. The main results are as follows. 1) The urban adolescents evaluated physical environment to be better than rural adolescents. Specifically, the urban adolescents evaluated 'facility/accommodation', 'security/health', 'amenity' of the housing environment, 'disorder', 'comfortability', 'nature awareness' of the neighborhood environment, and 'noise', 'overcrowding', and 'security' of the school environment to be higher. 2) The urban adolescents' self-esteem was significantly higher than rural ones. 3) The physical environment factors, which had effects on adolescents' mental health, are different depending on the areas, and so adolescents' physical environment would be designed by the local environment conditions.

Method: The subjects of this study were 296 high school adolescents residing in two urban area in Korea. The subjects completed self-report questionnaires measuring Resilience(Jew, et al., 1997), Coping Mechanism(Carver, et al., 1989), Social Support(Lee, 1997) and Family Strengths(Olson 1982). Results: Socio-demographic characteristics of school adolescents influencing resilience, coping mechanism, social support and family strengths were revealed. The results showed that resilience, problem-focused coping, social support and family strengths were correlated positively and self-esteem support, problem-focused coping, sibling's and mother's help, and instrumental support were the predictors of resilience of school adolescents. Conclusion: We found out the specific attributes of individual, social and family factors which predict resilience for school adolescents. These results may suggest further studies to investigate the relationship between stress and resilience, find out other predictors of resilience for Korean school adolescents, examine whether protective factors for adolescents' problem behaviors influence similarly on resilience.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the self-image of adolescents with cancer. Method: This study was a descriptive study. The participants in the study were 75 adolescents recruited from four medical centers in Seoul and all were receiving cancer therapy Korean Offer Self-Image Questionnaire was used and data were analyzed using the SPSS program. Result & Conclusions: The self-image of adolescents with cancer exists within the average range, but all groups of adolescents with cancer had a more positive self-image than Korean reference groups. The reason why adolescents with cancer showed a relatively positive self-image despite their painful experiences, is because they developed new value systems and view point through their experiences and teaming to cope with their situation. This research revealed that relapse affects the self-image of adolescents and therefore it is important to note that adolescents with relapses need more intensive interventions to maintain their positive self-image. In order to help with their coping process, further research on the factors that affect self-image in adolescents with cancer is also needed.

This study examined the relationship between parenting, the quality of peer relationships, and loneliness in adolescents. This study also examined the mediating effects of the quality of peer relationships on the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness. A total of 506 1st and 2nd grade middle school students (261 boys and 245 girls) from the Seoul Metropolitan area completed measures of parenting, the quality of their peer relationships, and loneliness. The results indicated that adolescents' perceptions of parenting and the quality of their peer relationships were significantly related to their feelings of loneliness. Specifically, adolescents' perceptions of low levels of parental monitoring and high levels of abusive and neglectful parenting were associated with high levels of loneliness. Adolescents who perceived the quality of their peer relationships to be low reported high levels of loneliness. Further, the quality of peer relationships mediated the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness; however, the pattern of associations differed for boys and girls. These findings suggest that both parent and peer relationship factors should be considered in combination in order to better explain loneliness in adolescents.
