  • Fuel economy has always been a major issue in the automobile industry, especially owing to the associated environmental concerns. It is widely known that only 5-20% of the energy generated by automobiles running on internal combustion engine engines is used as power, while the rest is consumed because of friction between components. The main components of the reciprocating piston type compressor used in vehicles, such as the shaft, swash plate, piston, and cylinder, cause severe energy loss owing to frictional contact between each other. The wear contact between the main shaft and the other components is particularly severe. Most quality issues arise owing to the sticking phenomenon that occurs between these parts. In this study, a coating solution to reduce friction is prepared by mixing adhesive solid lubricant, organic binder-polyadimide, inorganic binder (Binder), and graphite in four different ratios, and the best combination is determined.

  • Generally, diamond-like carbon films (a-C:H, DLC) have been shown to have a low coefficient of friction, a high hardness and a low wear rate. Pd-doped C thin film was fabricated using a dual magnetron sputtering with two targets of graphite and palladium. Graphite target RF power was fixed and palladium target RF power was varied. The structural, physical, and surface properties of the deposited thin film were investigated, and the correlation among these properties was examined. The doping ratio of Pd increased as the RF power increased, and the surface roughness of the thin film decreased somewhat as the RF power increased. In addition, the hardness value of the thin film increased, and the adhesive strength was improved. It was confirmed that the value of the contact angle indicating the surface energy increases as the RF power increases. It was concluded that the increase in RF power contributed to the improvement of the physical properties of Pd-doped C thin film.

  • Aluminum alloy is a material widely used in the aircraft industry. However, since it has relatively low hardness, strength and tribological properties, it is necessary to improve these properties. In this paper, a TiN thin film was coated on the surface of AL7075-T7351 using DC magnetron sputtering. The coating was performed by setting different deposition pressure, deposition time, and applied power. Then, the tribological properties of the thin film were investigated. As a result of the experiment, the hardness of the thin film was higher than that of the base material, and the specimen with the highest hardness had excellent friction coefficient, wear amount, and adhesive strength characteristics. Through this study, it was confirmed that the tribological characteristics of aluminum alloy can be improved by depositing thin films using DC magnetron sputtering.

  • This study is on development of UV-cured hard coating compounds which have more improved abrasion resistance than existing UV-cured urethane-acrylic resin, to prevent a surface of a widely used PVC tile as a constructive material from being scratched. To make a high abrasion resistant hard coating solution compared to UV-cured urethane-acrylic resin which has no abrasion resistance and been used for PVC tiles, we added powder substances of different abrasion resistant level, $Al_2O_3$(Al-160SG-3), $Al(OH)_3$(SH-8W), $SiO_2$(KS-5000), etc., to the resin, changing their contents from 10% to 30% against quantities of resin, and compounded it using Ring-Mill. After coating PVC tiles with the hard coating solution using bar-coating method that can adjust a thickness, we estimated some surface properties-abrasion resistance, pencil hardness, adhesive power, thickness of coating, and so on. As a result, a hard coating solution added 30% $Al_2O_3$ powder to the resin had the finest surface properties-the first grade in abrasion resistance, H in pencil hardness, 100% in adhesive power, and a hard coating solution which showed excellent solidity and abrasion resistance has smaller particle size, higher powder content, and thicker coating thickness.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of surface sealing materials on microleakage and surface roughness in Class V composite restorations. Twenty five standardized Class V cavity preparations were made on the facial surface of human premolars and were randomly assigned to 5 groups. The teeth were restored with Z-250 after applying Single Bond. Following 7 days storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$, the restorations were sealed as following systems : No sealing ; Single Bond Adhesive ; Biscover ; Fortify ; Optiguard. Then, toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine. Surface roughness was measured by means of profilometer before and after toothbrushing and the results were statistically analysed by using a paired t-test and ANOVA. The bonded interfaces and the changes of surface roughness were examined by SEM. For microleakage test, specimens were stained in a $2\%$ methylene blue solution, then longitudinally sectioned and analyzed for leakage at occlusal and cervical interfaces using stereomicroscope. The results were statistically analysed by using a Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U test. Surface roughness was increasing in all groups after toothbrushing, but no statistically significant differences. In SEM observation, surface sealant was partially retained and partially detached in bonded interfaces. Especially, microgap was identified in cervical margins. In microleakage test, there was better seal in the enamel region and a significant difference between groups at occlusal margin. Control group and Single Bond group had significantly better marginal seal at enamel margin than cervical margin.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of class V restorations. Thirty extracted human premolars, which were collected from oral surgery clinics were used. We mounted five teeth in a metal ring mold of 50 mm in diameter and 15 mm in height using chemically cured acrylic resin. Class V cavities were prepared in lingual cervical root surfaces and restored using one of following restorative materials : Dentin Conditioner/Fuji II LC (Group FL), All Bond II/Z-250 (Group ZT), One-up Bond F/Palfigue Estelite (Group PE), F2000 Primer/Adhesive (Group FT), and Prime & Bond 2.1/Dyract AP (Group DR). They were stored under distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine of pin-on disk type under a load of 1.5 N for 100,000 cycles. We have examined the bonded interfaces, the changes of surface roughness and color of abraded surfaces. From this experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. The change of surface roughness showed high degree: RMGIC>compomer>composite resin (p<0.05). 2. Because of the protrusion and missing of filler particles, SEM observation of abraded surfaces of RMGIC and compomers revealed the increase of surface roughness due to the selective removal of matrix resin. 3. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was affected in large part by the change of $L^*$ and $b^*$ of resin composites (p<0.05). 4. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was so small to detect by human eyes. 5. SEM observation of abraded surfaces revealed the interface bonding was the best in the FT group.

  • In order to study the shearing characteristics of anti-vibration sheet metal which has been bonded by resin, a blanking die of 40.02mm was manufactured to blank a material and it is used to reduce vibrational noise. The variables employed in this study were 1) Clearance 2) types of stripper plate, and 3) types of the die design technique. These variables were used to study the effects on burr height, diameter of product, and camber height. Lastly, the effect of the position of the rubber during blanking was observed. In the case of burr height from experimental investigation, the push-back die, combined with a movable stripper plate, resulted in the concentration of additional pressure between the cutting edges, meaning the crack initiation was delayed. This result was not affected by lubrication, although appropriate lubrication is preferred to enable a longer lasting die in terms of wear, which results from the presence of adhesive as the sheet metal is blanked. In the comparison of diameter measurement, the push-back die, combined with the back pressure from the knock-out plate showed a favorable precision. The use of the push back die with a fixed stripper plate, with a $4.5\%$ clearance, showed better accuracy in the diameter measurement. For comparing camber height, the push back die resulted in less cambering than the drop-through die. Also, the larger the clearance, the greater was the camber height. Considering experimental results, the shearing of anti-vibrational sheet metal is best achieved when the rubber is laying on the top, blanked with a fixed-stripper plate in a push-back die, with a $4.5\%$ clearance.

  • Purpose: This systematic review aimed to compare the efficacy, defined in terms of the mean percentage of root coverage (mRC), of surgical treatment approaches combined with adhesive restorations of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) to that of root coverage alone in patients with a single gingival recession (GR) and NCCL. Methods: A literature search was conducted to identify longitudinal studies reporting the mRC following treatment for the correction of GR defects associated with NCCLs using a combination of surgical and restorative techniques in systemically and periodontally healthy patients. Results: The search resulted in the retrieval of 12,409 records. Seven publications met the inclusion criteria for the qualitative synthesis of data. The mRCs ranged from 69% to 97%. In the medium term, the gingival margin position was more stable when a connective tissue graft (CTG) was used, independently of whether restoration of teeth with NCCLs was performed. Conclusions: The strength of the evidence was limited by methodological heterogeneity in terms of study design as well as the unit and period of analysis, which precluded a metaanalysis. Although no definitive conclusion could be drawn due to the lack of sufficient evidence to estimate the effectiveness of the interventions, CTG-based procedures contributed to gingival margin stability regardless of the performance of restoration to treat NCCLs.

  • Objectives: Natural extracts have been investigated as a biomimetic strategy to mechanically strengthen the collagen network and control the biodegradation of extracellular matrix. This study evaluated the effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on abfraction lesions prior to the composite resin. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 30 patients (aged between 28 and 60 years) with abfraction lesions located in 2 homologous premolars. The teeth were randomly assigned according to dentin treatment: 0.02% EGCG solution or distilled water (control). After enamel acid etching, the solutions were applied immediately for 1 minute. The teeth were restored with Universal Adhesive (3M) and Filtek Z350 XT (3M). Analyzes were done by 2 independent examiners using modified USPHS (retention, secondary caries, marginal adaptation, and postoperative sensitivity) and photographic (color, marginal pigmentation, and anatomical form) criteria at baseline (7 days) and final (18 months). The data analysis used Friedman and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests (α = 0.05). Results: At baseline, all restorations were evaluated as alpha for all criteria. After 18 months, restorations were evaluated as alpha for secondary caries, color, and marginal pigmentation. There was significant difference between baseline and 18 months (p = 0.009) for marginal adaptation and postoperative sensitivity (p = 0.029), but no significant difference were verified between treatments (p = 0.433). The EGCG group had a restoration retention rate of 93.3%, while the control group had 96.7%. Conclusions: The application of EGCG solution on abfraction lesions did not significantly influence the survival of the restorations based on clinical and photographic criteria.

  • In the field of makeup cosmetics, especially, powder-based foundations such as two-way cake, pact and face powder, the quality of which is known to be strongly influenced by the properties of powder, surface treatment technology is widely used as a method to improve the various characteristics of powder texture, wear properties, dispersion ability and so on. The two-way cake or pressed-powder foundation is one of the familiar makeup products in Asian market for deep covering and finishing purpose. In spite of the relent progress in surface modification method such as composition of powders with different characteristics and application of a diversity of coating ingredient (metal soap, amino acid, silicone and fluorine), this product possess a technical difficulty to enhance both of the adhesion power and spreadability on the skin in addition to potential claim of consumer about heavy or thick feeling. This article is covering the preparation and coating method of nano-vesicle that mimic the double-layered lipid lamellar structure existing between the corneocytes of the stratum corneum in the skin for the purpose of improving both of two important physical characteristic of two-way cake, spreadability and adhering force to skin, and obtining better affinity to skin. Nano-vesicle was prepared using the high-pressure emulsifying process of lecithin, pseudo ceramide, butylene glycol and tocopheryl acetate. This nano-sized emulsion was added to powder-dispersed aqueous phase together with bivalent metal salt solution and then the filtering and drying procedure was followed to yield the nano-vesicle coated powder. The amount of nano-vesicle coated on the powder was able to regulated by the concentration of metal salt and this novel powder showed the lower friction coefficient, more uniform condition of application and higher adhesive powder comparing with the alkyl silane treated powder from the test result of spreadability and wear properties using friction meter and air jet method. Two-wav cake containing newly developed coated powder with nano-vesicle showed the similar advantages in the frictional and adhesive characteristics.
