  • Various steps in the electrode production process, such as slurry mixing, slurry coating, drying, and calendaring, directly affect the quality and, consequently, mechanical properties and electrochemical performance of electrodes. Herein, a new method of slurry coating is developed: Double-coated electrode. Contrary to single-coated electrode, the cathode is prepared by double coating, wherein each coat is of half the total loading mass of the single-coated electrode. Each coat is dried and calendared. It is found that the double-coated electrode possesses more uniform pore distribution and higher electrode density and allows lesser extent of particle segregation than the single-coated electrode. Consequently, the double-coated electrode exhibits higher adhesion strength (74.7 N m-1) than the single-coated electrode (57.8 N m-1). Moreover, the double-coated electrode exhibits lower electric resistance (0.152 Ω cm-2) than the single-coated electrode (0.177 Ω cm-2). Compared to the single-coated electrode, the double-coated electrode displays higher electrochemical performance by exhibiting better rate capability, especially at higher C rates, and higher long-term cycling performance. Despite its simplicity, the proposed method allows effective electrode preparation by facilitating high electrochemical performance and is applicable for the large-scale production of high-energy-density electrodes.

  • Prediction of the load-bearing capacity of an adhesive-bonded Joint is of practical importance for engineers. This paper introduces interface fracture mechanics approach to predict the load-bearing capacity of composite metal bonded joints. The adhesion strength of composite/steel bonding is evaluated in terms of the energy release rate of an interfacial crack and the fracture toughness of the interface. Virtual track closure technique (VCCT) is used to calculate energy release rates, and hi-material end-notched flexure (ENF) specimens are devised to measure the interfacial fracture toughness. Bi-material ENF specimens gave consistent mode II fracture toughness $(G_{IIc})$ values of the composite/steel interface regardless of the thickness of specimens. The critical energy release rates of double-lap joints showed a good agreement with the measured fracture toughness. Therefore. the energy-based interfacial fracture characterization can be a practical engineering tool for predicting the load-bearing capacity of bonded joints.

  • With the recent development of super-precision optical instruments, camera modules for devices, such as portable terminals and digital camera lenses, are increasingly being used. Since an optical lens is usually produced by high-temperature compression molding methods using tungsten carbide (WC) alloy molding cores, it is necessary to develop and study technology for super-precision processing of molding cores and coatings for the core surface. In this study, Rhenium-Iridium (Re-Ir) thin films were deposited onto a WC molding core using a sputtering system. The Re-Ir thin films were prepared by a multi-target sputtering technique, using iridium, rhenium, and chromium as the sources. Argon and nitrogen were introduced through an inlet into the chamber to be the plasma and reactive gases. The Re-Ir thin films were prepared with targets having a composition ratio of 30 : 70, and the Re-Ir thin films were formed with a 240 nm thickness. Re-Ir thin films on WC molding core were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and Ra (the arithmetical average surface roughness). Also, adhesion strength and coefficient friction of Re-Ir thin films were examined. The Re-Ir coating technique has received intensive attention in the coating processes field because of promising features, such as hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and mechanical stability that result from the process. Re-Ir coating technique has also been applied widely in industrial and biomedical applications. In this study, WC molding core was manufactured, using high-performance precision machining and the effects of the Re-Ir coating on the surface roughness.

  • Polyolefin elastomer (POE) is widely used in a variety of applications, particularly in the manufacture of composites, due to its excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and flexibility. However, POE has a high processing temperature, which causes damage to the fiber during the manufacturing process when impregnating the fiber. Therefore, ethylene vinylacetate (EVA), which has a low melting point and excellent adhesion properties, is blended with POE to reduce the processing temperature, and POE-g-MAH (Polyolefin elastomer-grafted-maleic anhydride) is used as a compatibilizer to further improve the POE/EVA blend properties. The compatibility of POE/EVA blends is observed by SEM, and the interaction between each polymer is confirmed by DSC and FT-IR. In addition, the effect of adding the compatibilizer is analyzed through mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation. The optimal content of compatibilizer for POE/EVA blends considering physical properties and moldability is sought, and 20 phr is determined to be the most appropriate.

  • In the field of electronic components, the potting material, which is a part of the electronic circuit package, plays a significant role in protecting circuits from the external environment and reducing signal interference among electronic devices during operation. This significantly affects the reliability of the components. Therefore, the accurate prediction and assessment of the lifespan of a material are of paramount importance in the electronics industry. We conducted an accelerated thermal aging evaluation using the Arrhenius technique on elastic potting material developed in-house, focusing on its insulation, waterproofing, and contraction properties. Through a comprehensive analysis of these properties and their interrelations, we confirmed the primary factors influencing molding material failure, as increased hardness is related to aggregation, adhesion, and post-hardening or thermal-aging-induced contraction. Furthermore, when plotting failure times against temperature, we observed that the hardness, adhesive strength, and water absorption rate were the predominant factors up to 120 ℃. Beyond this temperature, the tensile properties were the primary contributing factors. In contrast, the dielectric constant and loss tangent, which are vital for reducing signal interference in electric devices, exhibited positive changes(decreases) with aging and could be excluded as failure factors. Our findings establish valuable correlations between physical properties and techniques for the accurate prediction of failure time, with broad implications for future product lifespans. This study is particularly advantageous for advancing elastic potting materials to satisfy the stringent requirements of reliable environments.

  • This study was conducted to determine the adhesive performances of plywoods affected by layering direction and the amounts of thermoplastic films. The face and back layers of veneer were hardwood species (Mixed light hardwood) and core layer veneer was radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don). Thermoplastic film used as adhesive were polypropylene (PP) film and polyethylene (PE) film. Thermal analysis and tensile strength were investigated on each films. As a result, the melting temperature of PP and PE films were $163.4^{\circ}C$ and $109.7^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the crystallization temperature were $98.9^{\circ}C$ and $93.6^{\circ}C$, respectively. Tensile strength and elongation of each films appeared higher on the width direction than length direction. Considering the characteristics of the thermoplastic films, the test for the amount of film used was carried out by layering film to the target thickness on veneer. The effecting of layering direction of film on plywood manufacturing was conducted by laminating in the length and width directions of the film according to the grain direction of veneer. Tensile-shear strength of plywood in wet condition was satisfied with the quality standard (0.7 MPa) of KS F 3101 when the film was used over 0.05 mm of PP film and over 0.10 mm of PE film. Tensile-shear strength of plywood after cyclic boiling exceeded the KS standard when PP film was used 0.20 mm thickness. Furthermore, higher bonding strength was observed on a plywood made with width direction of film according to grain direction of veneer than that of length direction of film. Based on microscopic analysis of the surface and bonding line of plywood, interlocking between veneers by penetration of a thermoplastic film into inner and cracks were observed.

Materials and methods: Feldspathic porcelain and zirconia specimens were produced into 30 per each 2 mm thick and 12 mm in diameter and their surface was made smooth and even and then embedded in acrylic resin. The specimens were divided into each Group F (Feldspathic porcelain) and Group Z (Zirconia), (1) Hydrofluoric acid etching and silane (F1 & Z1), (2) Silano-pen and silane (F2 & Z2), (3) Hydrofluoric acid etching and Silano-pen, silane (F3 & Z3). After surface conditioning, substrate surfaces of the specimen were examined by SEM. Composite resin cylinders (2 mm high, 3 mm in diameter)were bonded to specimen and shear bond strength between ceramic and composite resin was measured by using universal testing machine. The measured values were statistically analyzed by using two way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test (${\alpha}=.05$). Results: In the scanning electron micrograph of the treated ceramic surface, Group F2 and F3 appeared the high roughness and Group Z3 appeared the highest density of silica particle. In Feldspathic porcelain, the result of measuring shear bond strength showed that Group F3 was measured to be highest and Group F1 was measured to be lowest but there was no statistical significance among Groups. In zirconia, Group Z3 was measured to be highest and Group Z1 was measured to be lowest and there was statistical significance among Groups (P<.05). Conclusion: In zirconia, applying hydrofluoric acid etching and then Silano-pen and silane is effective for composite resin adhesion.
