  • In this study, the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) theory was combined with the instrumented indentation technique (IIT) to evaluate work of adhesion and modulus of elastomeric polymer. Indentation test was used to obtain the load-displacement data for contacts between Tungsten Carbide indenter and elastomeric polymer. And the JKR contact model, contrived to take viscoelastic effects of polymer into account, was applied to compensate the contact area and the elastic modulus which Hertzian contact model would underestimate and overestimate, respectively. Besides, we could obtain the thermodynamic work of adhesion by considering the surface energy in this contact model. In order to define the relation between JKR contact area and applied load without optical measuring of contact area, we used the relation between applied load and contact stiffness by examining the correlation between JKR contact area and stiffness through dimensional analysis with 14 kinds of elastomeric polymer. From this work, it could be demonstrated that the interfacial work of adhesion and elastic modulus of compliant polymer can be obtained from a simple instrumented indentation testing without area measurement, and provided as the main algorithm of compliant polymer characterization.

  • Purpose: This study analyzes the impact of laparoscopic liver resection on intra-abdominal adhesion. Methods: Patients who underwent salvage liver transplantation after liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma from January 2012 to October 2017 at our institution were included. Information about the severity of intra-abdominal adhesions was collected from a prospectively maintained database. Intra-abdominal adhesions were graded after the agreement of 2 surgeons who participated in the salvage liver transplantation based on predetermined criteria. Adhesion severity and demographic, operative, and postoperative data were compared between the laparoscopic group and the open group. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to consider potential factors related to severe adhesion during salvage transplantation. Results: Sixty-two patients who underwent salvage liver transplantation after liver resection were included in this study. Among them, 52 patients underwent open surgery, and 10 patients underwent laparoscopy. Adhesion was significantly more severe in the open group than in the laparoscopy group (P = 0.029). A multivariate logistic regression model including potential factors related to severe adhesion showed that laparoscopy (odds ratio, 0.168; 95% confidence interval, 0.029-0.970; P = 0.048) was the only significant factor. Conclusion: Laparoscopic liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma can minimize intra-abdominal adhesion during salvage liver transplantation.

  • In this paper, a multi-scale model is applied to the simulation of thrombus growth. This model includes macroscale model and microscale model. The former is used to model the plasma flow with Navier-Stokes equations, and the latter is used to model the platelets adhesion and aggregation, thrombus motion, and the surface expansion of thrombus. The force acting on platelets and thrombus from plasma is modeled by the drag force, and the forces from biochemical reactions are modeled by the adhesion force and the aggregation force. As more platelets are merged into the thrombus, the thrombus surface expands. We proposed a thrombus growth model for simulating the expansion of thrombus surface and tracking the surface by Level Set Methods. We implemented the computational model. The model performs well, and the experimental results show that the shape of thrombus in level set expansion form is similar with the thrombus in clinical test.

  • Ligand-receptor clustering event is the most important step in leukocyte adhesion and spreading on endothelial cells. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) has been shown to enhance leukocyte adhesion, but the molecular event during the process of adhesion is unclear. To visualize the dynamics of ICAM-1 movement during adhesion, we have engineered stable Chinese hamster ovary cell lines expressing ICAM-1 fused to a green fluorescent protein (IC1_GFP/CHO) and examined them under the fluorescence microscopy. The transfection of IC1_GFP alone in these cells was sufficient to support the adhesion of K562 cells that express $\alpha$L$\beta$2 (LFA-1) integrin stimulated by CBR LFA-1/2 mAb. This phenomenon was mediated by ICAM-1-LFA-1 interactions, as an mAb that specifically inhibits ICAM-1-LFA-1 interaction (RRl/l) completely abolished the adhesion of LFA-1* cells to IC1_ GFP/CHO cells. We found that the characteristic of adhesion was followed almost immediately (~10 min) by the rapid accumulation of ICAM-1 on CHO cells at a tight interface between the two cells. Interestingly, ICI_GFP/CHO cells projected plasma membrane and encircled approximately half surface of LFA-1+ cells, as defined by confocal microscopy. This unusual phenomenon was also confirmed on HUVEC after adhesion of LFA-1* cells. Neither cytochalasin D nor 2,3-butanedione 2-monoxime an inhibitor of myosin light chain kinase blocked LFA-1-mediated ICAM-1 clustering, indicating that actin cytoskeleton and myosin-dependent contractility are not necessary for ICAM-1 clustering. Taken together, we suggest that leukocyte adhesion to endothelial cells induces specialized form of ICAM-1 clustering that is distinct from immunological synapse mediated by T cell interaction with antigen presenting cells.

  • Platelets arrest bleeding and repair damaged blood vessels. The purpose of this paper is to formulate a mathematical model for the control of platelet adhesion within the vasculature consistent with experimental findings, particularly those of Frenette, Ruggeri , Savage, Yuan, Lawrence and Springer. In addition to providing some, albeit rudimentary, insight into the behavior of platelets, a numerical simulation of this theoretical model may be useful in a systematic study of pathological cases. Glycoprotein receptor complex (GPIb/V/IX), found on the platelet surface membrane, binds to the adhesive protein and ligand von Willebrand factor (vWf), located within the sub-endothelium. The binding...

  • In applications such as MEMS and NEMS devices, the adhesion force and contact load may be of the same order of magnitude and the static friction coefficient can be very large. Such large coefficient may result in unacceptable and possibly catastrophic adhesion, stiction, friction and wear. To obtain the static friction coefficient of contacting real surfaces without the assumption of an empirical coefficient value, numerical simulations of the contact load, tangential force, and adhesion force are preformed. The surfaces in dry contact are statistically modeled by a collection of spherical asperities with Gaussian height distribution. The asperity micro-contact model utilized in calculation (the ZMC model), considers the transition from elastic deformation to fully plastic flow of the contacting asperity. The force approach of the modified DMT model using the Lennard-Jones attractive potential is applied to characterize the intermolecular forces. The effect of the surface topography on the static friction coefficient is investigated for cases rough, intermediate, smooth, and very smooth, respectively. Results of the static friction coefficient versus the external force are presented for a wide range of plasticity index and surface energy, respectively. Compared with those obtained by the GW and CEB models, the ZMC model is more complete in calculating the static friction coefficient of rough surfaces.

  • The majority of the described experimental results deal with relatively pure aluminium. Variations were made in the pretreatment of the aluminum substrates and an investigation was performed on the resulting changes in oxide layer composition and chemistry. Subsequently, the bonding behavior of the surfaces was investigated by using model adhesion molecules. These molecules were chosen to represent the bonding functionality of an organic polymer. They were applied onto the pretreated surfaces as a monolayer and the bonding behavior was studied using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. A direct and clear relation was found between the hydroxyl fraction on the oxide surfaces and the amount of molecules that subsequently bonded to the surface. Moreover, it was found that most bonds between the oxide surface and organic functional groups are not stable in the presence of water. The best performance was obtained using molecules, which are capable of chemisorption with the oxide surface. Finally, it was found that freshly prepared relatively pure aluminum substrates, which are left in air, rapidly lose their bonding capacity towards organic functional groups. This can be attributed to the adsorption of contamination and water to the oxide surface. In addition the adhesion of a typical epoxy-coated aluminum system was investigated during exposure to water at different temperatures. The coating was found to quite rapidly lose its adhesion upon exposure to water. This rapid loss of adhesion corresponds well with the data where it was demonstrated that the studied epoxy coating only bonds through physisorptive hydrogen bonding, these bonds not being stable in the presence of water. After the initial loss the adhesion of the coating was however found to recover again and even exceeded the adhesion prior to exposure. The improvement could be ascribed to the growth of a thin oxyhydroxide layer on the aluminum substrate, which forms a new, water-stable and stronger bond with the epoxy coating. Two routes for improvement of adhesion are finally decribed including an interphasial polymeric thin layer and a treatment in boiling water of the substrate before coating takes place. The adhesion properties were finely also studied as a function of the Mg content of the alloys. It was shown that an enrichment of Mg in the oxide could take place when Mg containing alloys are heat-treated. It is expected that for these alloys the (hydr)oxide fraction also depends on the pre-treatment and on the distribution of magnesium as compared to the aluminium hydroxides, with a direct impact on adhesive properties.

  • In this paper, we propose the mathematical model for the vehicle system and the observer for adhesion force. To model the dynamic properties of vehicle system, we have considered two fundamental parts. The first part is the motion equations for vehicle based on Newton's second law. The second part is the torque dynamics of the traction motor. These parts are affected by outer conditions such as adhesive coefficient, running resistance and gradient resistance. The each parts are presented by the numerical formula. From two equations, we get the observer on adhesion force. Simulation results show that the proposed observer have the good performance compared with the normal observer.
