  • Using computational modeling, we design a pair of biomimetic microcapsules that exploit chemical mechanisms to communicate and alter their local environment. As a result, these synthetic objects can undergo autonomous, directed motion. In the simulations, signaling microcapsules release "agonist" particles, while target microcapsules release "antagonist" particles and the permeabilities of both capsule types depend on the local particle concentration in the surrounding solution. Additionally, the released nanoscopic particles can bind to the underlying substrate and thereby create adhesion gradients that propel the microcapsules to move. Hydrodynamic interactions and the feedback mechanism provided by the dissolved particles are both necessary to achieve the cooperative behavior exhibited by these microcapsules. Our model provides a platform for integrating both the spatial and temporal behavior of assemblies of "artificial cells", and allows us to design a rich variety of structures capable of exhibiting complex dynamics. Due to the cell-like attributes of polymeric microcapsules and polymersomes, material systems are available for realizing our predictions.

  • The morphology and impact strength of alloys of high density polyethylene(HDPE) and nylon-6(PA) with modified $ethylene-{\alpha}-olefin$ copolymer(OCP) as compatibilizer and impact modifier were measured by the scanning electron microscope(SEM) and the notched Izod impact test(and the high rate impact test), respectively. HDPE is incompatible with PA and specimens obtained from simple mechanical mixing show the inferior properties. However, it was indicated that OCP played roles of not only impact modifier but also compatibilizer. High rate impact test results were different from those of the notched Izod impact test, but in both tests OCP was effective for HDPE/PA blends. From SEM observation, the size of the dispersed phase in alloys prepared with OCP is much smaller than that of alloys without OCP and the interfacial adhesion of alloys prepared with OCP is also better. Toughening mechanism of polymer blends was discussed by combining the morphology analysis with mechanical and thermal properties.

  • Woven sisal textile fiber reinforced composites were used to evaluate fracture toughness, tensile and three-point bending. The water absorption testing of all specimens was repeated five times in this study. All specimens were immersed in pure water during 9 days at room temperature, and dried in 1 day at $50^{\circ}C$. Two kinds of polymer matrices such as epoxy and vinyl-ester were used. Fractured surfaces were taken to study the failure mechanism and fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion. It is shown that it can be enhanced to improve their mechanical performance to reveal the relationship between fracture toughness and water absorption fatigue according to different polymer matrices. Water uptake of the epoxy composites was found to increase with cycle times. Mechanical properties are dramatically affected by the water absorption cycles. Water-absorbed samples showed poor mechanical properties, such as lower values of maximum strength and extreme elongation. The $K_{IC}$ values demonstrated a decrease in inclination with increasing cyclic times of wetting and drying for the epoxy and vinyl-ester.

  • It was verified at Part Ⅰ of this investigation that there is a minimum wettability between molten iron and graphite, which was preliminarily coated with magnesium, and thus the spheroidization of graphite might have resulted from the lack of wettability between magnesium-adsorbed graphite and iron matrix. Being continued from the last work, the wettability between pure iron and graphite, coated with the various thickness of cerium, are measured at melting point of pure iron in vacuum and 200 mmHg argon gas atmosphere. The result indicates the presence of a minimum wettability at a critical thickness of cerium film as was proved in the case of magnesium. The experimental analysis shows that, the minimum wettability could be attributed entirely to a minimum work of adhesion between liquid iron and graphite at a critical concentration of cerium in the iron-graphite interface.

  • Flame retardancy and mechanical properties of recycled polyolefinic plastics/inorganic filler composite systems were investigated by using several inorganic flame retardants such as magnesium hydroxide and slag powder generated electro arc furnace Compatibilizer user each maleic anhydride functionalized polyethylene (PE-g-MAH) and polypropylene(PP-g-MAH) or used mixture of these. The effect of polymeric compatibilizers on the properties of composites was studied by tensile and impact test, differential scanning calorimetry, in the changed fracture mechanism. The improved adhesion was particularly reflected in the mechanical properties. The flame retardancy of composites was examined by measuring limiting oxygen index(LOI, ASTM D2863), smoke density(ASTM D2843) and vertical burning test(UL94). Regarding the flame retardant effect, the EAF slag powder is behaving as synergists as they are only active in the presence of magnesium hydroxide.

  • PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) brush cleaning method is a typical cleaning method for semiconductor cleaning process especially post-CMP cleaning. PVA brush contacts with the wafer surface and abrasive particle, generating the contact rotational torque of the brush, which is the removal mechanism. The brush rotational torque can overcome theoretically the adhesion force generated between the abrasive particle and wafer by zeta potential. However, after CMP (chemical mechanical polishing) process, many particles remained on the wafer because the brush was contaminated in previous post-CMP cleaning step. The abrasive particle on the brush redeposits to the wafer. The level of the brush contamination increased according to the cleaning run time. After cleaning the brush, the level of wafer contamination dramatically decreased. Therefore, the brush cleanliness effect on the cleaning performance and it is important for the brush to be maintained clearly.

  • Recessive oncogenes are genetic functions important in the regulation of tissue growth and differentiation. These genetic functions are defined on the basis of the phenotype expressed by homozygotes. Defining the role of these genes in normal developmental and physiological processes is important to the development of accurate models of the normal regulation of growth and differentiation. Drosophila can be a good system to investigate the neoplastic mechanism of oncogenes and provide a greater understanding in the developmental progression of both invertebrates and vertebrates and vertebrates. The lethal (2) giant larvae gene is a recessive oncogene of Drosophila and temperature sensitive mutations of this gene have been isolated. Here, the application of temperature-sensitive mutations in Drosophila oncogene studies is discussed.

  • Euchrestaflavanone A (EFA) is a flavonoid found in the root bark of Cudrania tricuspidata. C. tricuspidata extract, widely used throughout Asia in traditional medicine, has been investigated phytochemically and biologically and is known to have anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor effects. It has been reported that C. tricuspidata extract also possesses anti-platelet effects; however, the mechanism of its anti-platelet and anti-thrombotic activities is yet to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effects of EFA on the modulation of platelet function using collagen-induced human platelets. Our results showed that EFA markedly inhibited platelet aggregation. Furthermore, it downregulated glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (αIIb/β3)-mediated signaling events, including platelet adhesion, granule secretion, thromboxane A2 production, and clot retraction, but upregulated the cyclic adenosine monophosphate-dependent pathway. Taken together, EFA possesses strong anti-platelet and anti-thrombotic properties and is a potential therapeutic drug candidate to prevent platelet-related thrombosis and cardiovascular disease.

  • Recently, in the semiconductor industry, memory device market is focusing on producing ultra-thin wafers for high integration. In the wafer manufacturing process, wafers after backgrinding and CMP process must be picked up as individual dies and subjected to be peeled off from the dicing tape. However, ultra-thin dies are vulnerable to the possibility of breakage and failure in their thickness and size. This research studies the mechanism of peeling a die with a high-aspect ratio using a thermopneumatic method instead of a die ejector with physical pins. Setting compressed air and the temperature as main factors, we determine the success of the digester using thermopneumatic system and analyze the good die to find the possibility of making mass-production equipment.
