  • A 10-year-old, intact female, Maltese dog was presented with a two weeks history of vomiting, anorexia and weight loss. Hematologic analysis revealed mild leukocytosis and increased liver enzyme. Gaseous dilation of small intestine and hyperechoic nodules of hepatic lobes were revealed on the imaging studies. Liver biopsy was performed through laparotomy and histopathologic results revealed liver cirrhosis with precancerous lesions. Two days later, endoscopy was performed and histopathologic results of the specimens taken by endoscopic biopsy showed gastric adenoma. The gastric surgery was not performed by the owner's request. The patient died after 60 days of diagnosis of gastric adenoma. This case describes clinical features, imaging studies, endoscopic features and histopathologic characteristics of gastric adenoma in a Maltese dog.

  • A bronchial adenoma. being one of rare neoplastic diseases in children, was reported in a 4 year-old-male child. The tumor was located entirely intraluminal in the left main bronchus and was treated with left pneumonectomy because of the irreversible cystic changes were revealed throughout the left lung on open thoracotomy. The tumor was histologically confirmed to be a muco-epidermoid type of bronchial adenoma.

  • Hyalinizing trabecular adenoma is an uncommon benign thyroid tumor that is recently described in the literature. This tumor is easily confused with medullary carcinoma on surgical specimens and with papillay carcinoma on cytologic specimens. Herein we report the cytologic characteristics of a case of histologically proven hyalinizing trabecular adenoma of the thyroid gland. Cytologically, the aspirate showed trabecular or individually dispersed polygonal cells with finely stippled chromatin pattern, nuclear grooves, and eosinophilic nuclear pseudoinclusions. No colloid materials were noted in the background.

  • The benign adrenal cortical adenoma usually secretes cortisol and its size is less than 3 cm in diameter. Though adrenal cortical carcinoma also secretes cortisol and other steroid hormones, its size is usually over 6 cm. We present a huge glucocorticoid producing adrenal cortical adenoma ($15{\times}11{\times}12 cm$), which was diagnosed by NP-59 scan and confirmed by surgery, with a review of the literature.

  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is most frequent malignant tumor of parotid gland. However, mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from pleomorphic adenoma has been disputed and rarely reported. 54-year-old woman with pleomorphic adenoma underwent superficial parotidectomy. And 15 years later, she diagnosed mucoepidermoid carcinoma at the same side. We report the case with a review of literature.

  • A case of primary hyperparathyroidism due to parathyroid adenoma is presented. A 14 year-old male was admitted to the hospital comptaining of voiding difficulty. The intravenous pyelogram demonstrated a stone in the proximal one third of the left ureter and marked hydronephrosis of the left kidney. The Tc-99m sestamibi nuclear scan demonstrated a hot spot below the lower pole of the left lobe of the thyroid. Laboratory study demonstrated hypercalcemia (12.4 mg/dL) and elevated parathyroid hormone (143.67 pg/mL). A parathyroid gland located below the lower pole of the left lobe of the thyroid was excised. A parathyroid adenoma, consisting of mainly chief cells was found on pathologic examination. Postoperatively the patient had transient hypocalcemic symptoms, which resolved with administration of calcium preparation and vitamin D.

  • Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a low grade malignant neoplasm that commonly occurs in the parotid gland. Recently, we investigated a case of EMC that occurred in the external auditory canal (EAC) in a 35-year-old male, and this tumor was initially diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma. The difficulty associated with diagnosing EMC by aspiration cytology arises from both the rare incidence of this tumor and the overlapping spectrum of cytological features found in various salivary gland tumors, such as pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma.

  • This study comprised 13 cases having canine perianal adenoma at Veterinary Medical T~aching Hospital, Seoul National University from January 2000 to October 2003. All referred dogs were intact male and mean age of dogs was 11.5 years (ranged from 7 to 15 years). The most prevalent breed was Shih Tzu. The clinical signs were presence of 1 to 5 cm in diameter firm mass, perianal swelling, hemorrhage, pain and dyschezia. The masses were located either in the perineum (12 cases) or tail (5 cases). Five dogs had masses with ulceration. Concurrent prostatomegaly and seminoma was found in 5 and 1, respectively. Castration was performed in 5 cases. In 8 cases, surgical excision of the tumor was performed with castration. There was no recurrence in all cases after removal. In all cases with castration, perianal adenomas were regressed within 1-2 months. In one case among them, excision of the tumor was also performed because of persistent ulceration. According to these clinical results, perianal adenoma excellently responded to castration with or without surgical excision of the tumor.
