Surface Characteristics of Type II Anodized Ti-6Al-4V Alloy for Biomedical Applications

  • Titanium and its alloys offer attractive properties in a variety of applications. These are widely used for the field of biomedical implants because of its good biocompatibility and high corrosion resistance. Titanium anodizing is often used in the metal finishing of products, especially those can be used in the medical devices with dense oxide surface. Based on SAE/AMS (Society of Automotive Engineers/Aerospace Material Specification) 2488D, it has the specification for industrial titanium anodizing that have three different types of titanium anodization as following: Type I is used as a coating for elevated temperature forming; Type II is used as an anti-galling coating without additional lubrication or as a pre-treatment for improving adherence of film lubricants; Type III is used as a treatment to produce a spectrum of surface colours on titanium. In this study, we have focused on Type II anodization for the medical (dental and orthopedic) application, the anodized surface was modified with gray color under alkaline electrolyte. The surface characteristics were analyzed with Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), surface roughness, Vickers hardness, three point bending test, biocompatibility, and corrosion (potentiodynamic) test. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy was used for specimen, the anodizing procedure was conducted in alkaline solution (NaOH based, pH>13). Applied voltage was range between 20 V to 40 V until the ampere to be zero. As results, the surface characteristics of anodic oxide layer were analyzed with SEM, the dissecting layer was fabricated with FIB method prior to analyze surface. The surface roughness was measured by arithmetic mean deviation of the roughness profile (Ra). The Vickers hardness was obtained with Vickers hardness tester, indentation was repeated for 5 times on each sample, and the three point bending property was verified by yield load values. In order to determine the corrosion resistance for the corrosion rate, the potentiodynamic test was performed for each specimen. The biological safety assessment was analyzed by cytotoxic and pyrogen test. Through FIB feature of anodic surfaces, the thickness of oxide layer was 1.1 um. The surface roughness, Vickers hardness, bending yield, and corrosion resistance of the anodized specimen were shown higher value than those of non-treated specimen. Also we could verify that there was no significant issues from cytotoxicity and pyrogen test.

An Experimental Study on the Thermal Characteristics of Hybrid Solar Receiver for Dish/Stirling System (Dish/Stirling 시스템 적용을 위한 Hybrid 태양열 흡수기의 열특성에 관한 실험 연구)

  • A Dish type solar concentrating system consists of a parabolic concentrator and a cavity receiver. In order to achieve high temperatures from solar energy, it is essential to efficiently reflect the solar rays in the concentrator and to minimize thermal losses in the cavity receiver. Improving the economical efficiency of a solar power system required the stirling unit to be operated continuously. For continuous operation of the stilting unit, the receiver must be continuously provided with thermal energy from solar as well as additional combustion heat. It is possible for a hybrid solar receiver system equipped with an additional combustion to be operated 24 hrs/day. A hybrid solar receiver was designed and manufactured for a total thermal load of 35 kW in the operating temperature range $700^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. The hybrid receiver system was tested in gas-only mode by gas-fired heat to investigate thermal characteristics at inclination angle varying from 0 deg to 30 deg(cavity facing down) and the aperture to cavity diameter ratios of 0(closed cavity) and 1.0(open cavity). This paper has been conducted to measure temperature distribution in cavity surface and to analyze thermal resistances, and the evaporation and condensation heat transfer coefficient in all cases(open and closed cavity).

Design Improvement of the Road Expansion on a Deep Thick Soft Ground (대심도 연약지반 도로확장 공사에서의 설계 개선)

  • The expansion of a road on soft ground could induce an additional settlement to the existing road because of the consolidation characteristics of the soft soil layer subjected to additional load by an adjacent banking. In such case, the existing road could be faced with various problems during the stages of the construction and maintenance, such as deterioration of not only the surface smoothness yielding the decrease in automobile performance safety but also the structural stability of the embankment. These kinds of problems are expected to occur more freguently especially for the deep ground level with a fairly thick soft soil layer. Therefore, they should be examined and studied adequately during the design stage. As a reference case study, this paper deals with the project named Namhae Expressway of 2nd Branch with the soft soil layer with the thickness upto about 50m. After a lengthy review of the original design, an improved design is proposed.

Numerical Analysis on Effects of the Boundary Layer Fence Equipped on the Hub of Rotor in the First Stage Axial Flow Gas Turbine (1단 축류 가스터빈내 동익의 허브면에 장착된 경계층 펜스의 효과에 대한 수치 해석적 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the three-dimensional turbulence flow characteristics of a rotor passage of an one-stage axial flow gas turbine and to investigate the effects of a boundary layer fence installed on the hub endwall of the rotor passage. Secondary flows occurring within the rotor passage (e.g. horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, and cross flow) cause secondary loss and reduce turbine efficiency. To control these secondary flows, a boundary layer fence measuring half the height of the thickness of the inlet boundary layer was installed on the hub endwall of the rotor passage. This study was performed numerically. The results show that the wake and secondary flows generated by the stator reduced the rotor load to constrain the development of cross flow and secondary flow reinforced by the rotor passage. In addition, the secondary vortices occurring within the rotor passage were reduced by the rotation of the rotor. Although, the boundary layer fence induced additional vortices, giving rise to an additional loss of turbine, its presence was shown to reduce the total pressure loss when compared to effects of the case without fence regardless of the relative position of blades by enervating secondary vortices occurred within the rotor passage.

Production of Hydrogen Sulfide Gas from Sediments in Concrete Sewer (하수관내 침전물의 황화수소가스 발생에 관한 연구)

  • The pulverized wastes originated from kitchen garbage grinder cause an additional load in sewage treatment plant and water environment. Therefore, several problems occur in sewer, such as microbial corrosion, odor, psychoda and fly interrupting flow of sewage etc. by their precipitation with earth and sand. This study was conducted on two experiments: hydrogen sulfide gas generation from sediments in sewer and anaerobic batch test. In anaerobic batch test, gas generation was increased when organic compounds were increased in concentration. Sulfide was decreased upon decreasing in sulfate concentration. In $H_2S$ gas generation test along the depth of sediments there were two different sampling sites which are apart from about 50 cm each other in a menhole. The one has the thickness of 55 cm from the surface, the other, of 60 cm. The hydrogen sulfide gas production rates were measured based on ranges from 0 to 10 cm, 10 to 20 cm, 20 to 30 cm for two samples. The results obtained were 1.08, between 0 to 10 cm in depth for the sample thickness of 55 cm and 3.07, 5.36, $5.42{\mu}g/g-VS{\cdot}hr$ in order of depth for the sample thickness of 60 cm, respectively.

  • This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for calculating the wear of journal bearings during the start-up and coast-down cycles of a motoring stripped-down single cylinder engine operating with a tilted shaft. In order to decide whether the lubrication state of a journal bearing is in the mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime, we utilize lift-off speed and MOFT (most oil film thickness) under mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime at the corresponding aligned shaft. We formulate an equation for the modified film thickness in a misaligned journal bearing considering the additional wear volume described in Part I of this study. For this, we use the calculation results of the degree of misalignment and tilting angle obtained after finding the eccentricities of the two bearings supporting the crankshaft of a single cylinder engine. In this Part II, we calculate the wear of journal bearings using the fractional film defect coefficient, the asperity load sharing factor, and the modified specific wear rate for the application of mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime. We show that the accumulated wear volume after turning the ignition switch on and off once, increases to ${\sigma}=39{\mu}m$ and then decreases from ${\sigma}=39{\mu}m$ with increasing in surface roughness.

Multiple wall dampers for multi-mode vibration control of building structures under earthquake excitation

  • One of the main concerns of civil engineering researchers is developing or modifying an energy dissipation system that can effectively control structural vibrations, and keep the structural response within tolerable limits during unpredictable events like earthquakes, wind and any kind of thrust load. This article proposes a new type of mass damper system for controlling wideband earthquake vibrations, called Multiple Wall Dampers (MWD). The basic principle of the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) was used to design the proposed wall damper system. This passive energy dissipation system does not require additional mass for the damping system because the boundary wall mass of the building was used as a damper mass. The multi-mode approach was applied to determine the location and design parameters of the dampers. The dampers were installed based on the maximum amplitude of modes. To optimize the damper parameters, the multi-objective optimization Response Surface Methodology was used, with frequency response and maximum displacement as the objective functions. The obtained structural responses under different earthquake forces demonstrated that the MWD is one of the most capable tools for reducing the responses of multi-storied buildings, and this system can be practically used for new and existing building structures.

  • Due to the nature of the existing load, the criteria of assessing the intensity of the lightweight wall's impact resistance has been though of as obscure. The current study, therefore, focuses on the standardized assessment of the impact resistance to the force of the large soft body applying to the lightweight wall. The gypsum board wall showed a low level of the maximum residual displacement. It is, however, required to be careful about the selection of the finishing process since the high level of the maximum displacement is likely to cause harm to finishing materials. Unlike the gypsum board, the ALC block wall displayed a considerable rigidity while showing almost no maximum residual displacement. Even with the low level of the maximum displacement due to the stiffness, the ALC block wall is still likely to be affected by the vibration derived from any impact on the surface, which demands a need for additional study. The future experimental study, accordingly, will focus on the impact of the vibration on finishing materials, consequently leading to the accurate prediction of the possibility of potential damage to the lightweight wall caused by the large soft body.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. Performance Comparison of Liquid-Cooling with Air-Cooling Heat Exchangers Designed for Telecommunication Equipment

  • Electronic and telecommunication industries are constantly striving towards miniaturization of electronic devices. Miniaturization of chips creates extra space on PCBs that can be populated with additional components, which decreases the heat transfer surface area and generates very high heat flux. Even though an air-cooling technology for telecommunication equipment has been developed in accordance with rapid growth in electrical industry, it is confronted with the limitation of cooling capacity due to the rapid increase of heat density. In this study, liquid-cooling heat exchangers were designed and tested by varying geometry and operating conditions. In addition, air-cooling heat exchangers were tested to provide performance data for the comparison with the liquid-cooling heat exchangers. The liquid-cooling heat exchangers had twelve rectangular channels with different flow paths of 1, 2, and 12. Silicon rubber heaters were used to control the heat load to the heat exchangers. Heat input ranged from 293 to 800W, and inlet temperatures of working fluid varied from 15 to $27^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer coefficients were strongly affected by flow conditions. All liquid-cooling heat exchangers showed higher cooling performance than the air-cooling heat exchanger. The heat exchanger with 2-paths could provide more controllability on the maximum temperature than the others.
