  • In 2007, just after the recession of the Changma, anomalously long rainy period (from July 30 to August 15) occurred in Korea. To identify the cause of the sustained rainy period, we performed synoptic analysis and the associated air motions. The behavior of each air parcel trajectory associated with atmospheric motion was then investigated. As a result, three particular phenomena occurring at latitudes lower than $40^{\circ}N$ were discovered. First, a mass of relatively cold air, referred to as E, made a deep intrusion from $20^{\circ}N$ to $60^{\circ}N$. Second, this intrusion was accompanied by another mass of air called dE. It was colder and drier than E and originated from the mid-troposphere over the tropical ocean. Third, dE and E rotated clockwise three times over a period of 17 days over the Northwestern Pacific and blocked the westerly waves imbedded in the zonal flow from propagating. Two additional phenomena were observed at latitudes higher than $40^{\circ}N$. First, the cold core system, while approaching from the west with low geopotential values at its center, was stagnated over Shanxi China. It enhanced the northward intrusion of dE and E, and then diminished. The subsequent low system showed similar evolution as the first one. Second, a warm core anticyclone was formed over Lake Baikal, blocking the westerlies for 13 days and contributed to the persistent northward incursion of warm moist air. Moreover, a horizontally extended intrusion of upper level clouds from the tropics to $50^{\circ}N$, which may be interpreted as a tropical plume, was found around the end of the period (from August 12 to 15, 2007) with successive tropical nights over Korea.

  • We have mapped about 1.5 square degree regions of Lynds 1299, a well isolated dark cloud in the Outer Galaxy (l = $122^{\circ}$, b = $-7^{\circ}$), in the J = 1- 0 transition of $^{12}CO$ and $^{13}CO$ with the 13.7 m radio telescope at Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO). We found that there are two velocity components in the molecular emission, at $V_{LSR} = -52 km S^{-1}$ (Cloud A) and -8.8 km $s^{-1}$ (Cloud B), respectively. We have derived physical parameters of two molecular clouds and discussed three different mass estimate techniques. We found that there are large discrepancies between the virial and LTE mass estimates for both clouds. The large virial mass estimate reflects the fact that both are not gravitationally bound. We adopt the mass of $5.6 {\times}10^3 \;M{\bigodot}$ for Cloud A and $1.2{\times}10^3 \;M{\bigodot}$) for Cloud B using conversion factor. Cloud A is found to be associated with a localized star forming site, and its morphology is well matching with that of far-infrared (FIR) dust emission. It shows a clear ring structure with an obvious velocity gradient. We suggest that it may be a remnant cloud from a past episode of massive star formation. Cloud B is found to be unrelated to Cloud A (d = 800 pc) and has no specific velocity structure. The average dust color temperature of the uncontaminated portion of Cloud A is estimated to be 24$\~$27.4 K. The low dust temperature may imply that there is no additional internal heating source within the cloud. The heating of the cloud is probably dominated by the interstellar radiation field except the region directly associated with the new-born B5 star. Overall, the dust properties of Cloud A are similar to those of normal dark cloud even though it does have star forming activity.

  • This study investigates the field application, Songdo the # 1st WORLD, on zero-crack construction of the fundamental mass concrete using double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture. Experimental results of hydration heat analysis showed that crack modulus of concrete incorporating 20% of blast furnace slag cement was 1.0 in 120 hours, representing 50% probability of crack occurrence, thus requiring additional measures. As for a curing method, a specimen insulating two layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets exhibited only $16.5^{\circ}C$ difference between upper and lower sections, and it also showed favorable workability as well as competitive economic side. Therefore it was determined to use it for curing method in this field. For the curing results of practical field, using 2 layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture on the fundamental mass concrete in 3A residential building exhibited less than only $15^{\circ}C$ difference between surface and center section of that in 5 days elapse and less than $20^{\circ}C$ in 9 days. This means that the crack by hydration heat was prevented, and other fields structures also resisted the plastic shrinkage by insulating the vinyl, sinking crack by second temping, even drying shrinkage by the mixture of low unit water. Therefore the crack on the placement has not been found so far, since the construction was started before 6 month.

  • To mitigate vibrations, tuned mass dampers(TMD) are widely used for long span bridges or high-rise buildings. Due to some durability concerns, such as fluid degradation, oil leakage, etc., the alternative solutions, such as the non-contacted eddy current damping (ECD), are proposed for mechanical devices in small scales. In the present study, a new eddy current damping TMD (ECD-TMD) is proposed and developed for large scale civil infrastructure applications. Starting from parametric study on finite element analysis of the ECD-TMD, the new design is enhanced via using the permanent magnets to eliminate the power need and a combination of a copper plate and a steel plate to improve the energy dissipation efficiency. Additional special design includes installation of two permanent magnets at the same side above the copper plate to easily adjust the gap as well as the damping. In a case study, the proposed ECD-TMD is demonstrated in the application of a steel arch bridge to mitigate the wind-induced vibrations of the flexible hangers. After a brief introduction of the configuration and the installation process for the damper, the mitigation effects are measured for the ambient vibration and forced vibration scenarios. The results show that the damping ratios increase to 3% for the weak axis after the installation of the ECD-TMDs and the maximum vibration amplitudes can be reduced by 60%.

  • The pinnacle of rapidly changing and advancing maritime transportation technology is expected to be the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS). The implementation of various services within the MASS is likely to be feasible through the ship-centric network known as the S2X communication system. However, existing communication systems face issues such as service traffic saturation and failure to meet demanded functionalities, necessitating the proactive introduction of additional communication technologies. In this study, the concept of S2X communication for the MASS was redefined, deriving required functionalities and ultimately selecting frequencies suitable for utilization. Candidate frequency groups suitable for the derived communication requirements were identified, and communication frequencies prioritized for the initial application were chosen through expert consensus. It is anticipated that through further research, including experimentation to validate these frequencies, they could be utilized in implementing services for autonomous ship navigation in the future.

  • The objective of this study is firstly to frame up the seismic safety of concrete gravity dams. It is necessary to analyze seismic response and evaluate seismic performance of concrete gravity dams during earthquake. In this study, seismic damage and dynamic analysis of concrete gravity dams using structural analysis package such as SAP2000 and MIDAS were performed. Additional dynamic water pressure due to earthquake considered as additional mass for numerical seismic analysis. According detailed analysis, the vibration through the dam structure (transverse to water flow) seems to be very critical depending on the shape of the dam. For more precise evaluation of seismic fragility of concrete gravity dams, further research is still needed.

  • $CO_2$ sensor was used only one solid electrolyte in many cases. To improve the sensing characteristics of $CO_2$ sensors, solid electrolyte $CO_2$ sensor has been developed by bi-electrolyte type sensor using Na-Beta-alumina and YSZ. However, in many further studies, bi-electrolyte type sensor was made by pellet pressed by press machine and additional treatment for formation of interface. In the aspect of mass production, using thick film and additional treatment is not suitable. In this study, $CO_2$ sensor was fabricated by bi-electrolyte structure which was made by an NBA paste layer deposited on YSZ pellet and fired at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour. The formation of stable interface between YSZ and NBA were confirmed by SEM image. When the type IV electrochemical cell arrangement represented by $CO_2,O_2,Pt{\mid}Li_2CO_3-CaCO_3{\parallel}NBA{\parallel}YSZ{\mid}O_2,Pt$ is used to measure the $CO_2$ concentration in air. This sensor EMF should depend only on the concentration of $CO_2$ by logarithmic. Also, sensor shows $P_{CO_2}$ and EMF relationship like nerstian reaction at a temperature of $450^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, a hydraulic system of a mini-loader is modeled, and the model is validated by comparing the simulation results to the experimental results. A load force acting on the structure of the mini-loader is obtained from the simulation of the hydraulic system, and the structural analysis via finite element method is performed using the obtained load force to evaluate the structural safety of the loader. For the mainframe that requires additional strengthening according to the structural analysis, the optimum design parameters are proposed using the design of experiments to improve strength without additional mass.

  • In this paper, a novel 5-axis hybrid-kinematic machine tool is introduced and the research results on accuracy improvement of the prototype machine tool are presented. The 5-axis hybrid machine tool is made up of a 3-DOF parallel manipulator and a 2-DOF serial one connected in series. The machine tool maintains high ratio of stiffness to mass due to the parallel structure and high orientation capability due to the serial-type wrist. In order to acquire high accuracy, the methodology of measuring the output shafts by additional sensors instead of using encoder outputs at the motor shafts is proposed. In the kinematic view point, the hybrid manipulator reduces to a serial one, if the passive joints in the U-P serial chain at the center of the parallel manipulator are directly measured by additional sensors. Using the method of successive screw displacements, the kinematic error model is derived. Since a ball-bar is less expensive than a full position measurement device and sufficiently accurate for calibration, the kinematic calibration method of using a ball-bar is presented. The effectiveness of the calibration method has been verified through the simulations. Finally, the calibration experiment shows that the position accuracy of the prototype machine tool has been improved from 153 to $86{\mu}m$.

  • The LiBr aqueous solution, which is the absorption liquid of absorption refrigerator, must be replaced periodically because the concentration of impurities such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Ca2+, etc., increases due to corrosion of the tubes as the period of use increases, and the refrigeration efficiency decreases significantly. In order to reuse the waste absorption liquid, flocculation-precipitation method is mainly applied to precipitate the impurities, which requires hundreds of times the concentration of impurities and generates additional waste. In this study, a process for removing Cu ion impurities from cyclone electrolyzer by electrolytic reduction is presented in a small-scale facility without additional waste. It was confirmed that Cu ion impurities can be removed down to 1 ppm by electrolytic reduction process, and to further improve the removal rate, the mass transfer rate was increased by using a cyclone electrolyzer. The removal rate of Cu ions increased with the increase of flow rate and current density, and it was confirmed that Cu was removed at a rate of 1.48 ppm/h under the condition of 330 mL/sec and 2.5 mA/cm2.
