In this paper the MMAE(Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation) algorithm using the MGEKF(Modified Gain Extended Kalman Filter) of which modes are set to be measurement biases is proposed to enhance the performance of target tracking with bearing only measurements. The state are composed of relative position, relative velocity and taregt acceleration. The mode probability is calculated from the bearing only measurements from the HMS(Hull-Mounted Sonar). The proposed algorithm is tested in a series of computer simulation runs.

In this paper, a modified skyhook control for the semi-active Macpherson suspension system is investigated. A new model for the semi-active type suspension, which incorporates the rotational motion of the unsprung mass, is introduced and an output feedback control law using the skyhook control method is derived. The gains in the skyhook controller are adaptively adjusted by estimating the road conditions. Because two vertical acceleration sensors, one for the sprung mass and another for the unsprung mass, are used rather than using the angle sensor for the rotational motion of the control arm, the relative velocity of the rattle space is filtered using the acceleration signals. For testing the control performance, the actual damping force has been incorporated via the hardware-in-the-loop simulations. The performances of a passive damper and a semi-active damper are compared. Simulation results are provided.
This special issue focuses on Smart Tuned Mass Dampers (STMD) that are either active or smart or semi-active in nature. Active tuned mass dampers or active mass dampers have found wide acceptance and have been implemented in many tall buildings and long span bridges. Recently researchers have developed a new class of smart tuned mass dampers using either variable stiffness and/or variable damping to effect the change in instantaneous frequency and damping. Since tuning plays a central role in STMDs it is of great current interest thus the topic of this special issue. Discussions of recent active and smart TMD implementations in tall buildings and bridges are also included.
The direction and spectra of underwater sound wave were a remarkable contrast to the sound wave in the air because of the difference of transmissive medium. The linear hydrophone array of passive system has so far been applied to find out the direction and spectra of underwater sound wave from the sources for many purposes. The conventional methods are generally classified into two systems such as, the system which varying frequency responses, other parameters and pattern of signal like an adaptive array controlled by internal feedback, and another system which obtaining maximum of S/N ratio by giving a appropriate delay and a weighting coefficient in the output of each hydrophone. The array device of passive system can easily change the amplitude and the phase of signal by separately controlled hydrophone. And here we introduce a method that the spectral analyzing and the direction finding can be simultaneously carried out using a linear array of hydrophones. By making a circular convolution of output of signal from each hydrophone with appropriate rectangular weighting coefficient on the array, a sharp response of single lobe directivity and the spectral analyzing by time averaging were simultaneously obtained. In tile computer simulation of the array system with the length of 250cm and the interhydrophone distance of l0cm the power levels of sound signals received from given array direction were 16dB higher than those from the other directions when processing with rectangular weightings, and 8dB higher when processing with rectangular sound signals and rectangular weightings.
Negative stiffness, previously emulated by active or semi-active control for cable vibration mitigation, is realized passively using a self-contained highly compressed spring, the negative stiffness device (NSD).The NSD installed in parallel with a viscous damper (VD) in the vicinity of cable anchorage, enables increment of damper deformation during cable vibrations and hence increases the attainable cable damping. Considering the small cable displacement at the damper location, even with the weakening device, the force provided by the NSD-VD assembly is approximately linear. Complex frequency analysis has thus been conducted to evaluate the damping effect of the assembly on the cable; the displacement-dependent negative stiffness is further accounted by numerical analysis, validating the accuracy of the linear approximation for practical ranges of cable and NSD configurations. The NSD is confirmed to be a practical and cost-effective solution to improve the modal damping of a cable provided by an external damper, especially for super-long cables where the damper location is particularly limited. Moreover, mathematically, a linear negative stiffness and viscous damping assembly has proven capability to represent active or semi-active control for simplified cable vibration analysis as reported in the literature, while in these studies only the assembly located near cable anchorage has been addressed. It is of considerable interest to understand the general characteristics of a cable with the assembly relieving the location restriction, since it is quite practical to have an active controller installed at arbitrary location along the cable span such as by hanging an active tuned mass damper. In this paper the cable frequency variations and damping evolutions with respect to the arbitrary assembly location are then evaluated and compared to those of a taut cable with a viscous damper at arbitrary location, and novel frequency shifts are observed. The characterized complex frequencies presented in this paper can be used for preliminary damping effect evaluation of an adaptive passive or semi-active or active device for cable vibration control.

An FM radio based PCL system is a passive radar technique for detecting the multiple moving targets from FM radio signals and tracking the trajectories of the targets by calculating the cross-correlation function of direct-path signal and target echo signals. However, the interference signals are received from a surveillance channel, which is designed to receive the target echo signals. Because of this problem, the target echo signals are masked by the strong interference signals and this makes it difficult to detect the true targets from the cross-correlation function. Adaptive filters are known as effective methods for suppressing the interference signals but there is a problem to present their accurate performances in the PCL system because many literatures used the cross-correlation function and the ratio of input and output power as a measure of the performance analysis. In this paper, a performance analysis method is proposed to evaluate the performance of interference cancellation algorithms. By using the property that each component of the filter weight vector is adjusted to suppress the specific interference signal, a performance measure of the interference signal suppression is defined by a function of adaptive filter weights. Based on the proposed method, we compare the performance of the adaptive filters used in the PCL system. Simulation results show that the proposed method can be very effective for evaluating the performance of interference cancellation algorithms.
This paper proposes a noise cancelling algorithm to remove own-ship noise for a towed array sonar. Extra beamforming is performed using partial channels of the acoustic array to get a reference beam signal robust to the noise bearing. Frequency domain Adaptive Noise Cancelling (ANC) is applied based on Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithm using the reference beam. The bearing of own-ship noise is estimated from the coherence between the reference beam and input beam signals. Own-ship noise level is calculated using a beampattern of the noise with estimated steering angle, which prevents loss of a target signal by determining whether to update a filter so that removed signal level does not exceed the estimated noise level. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm maintains its performance when the own-ship gets out off its bearing 40 % more than the conventional algorithm's limit and detects the target even when the frequency of the target signal is same with the frequency of the own-ship signal.
In this paper, the activities carried out within the EU funded Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (JTI GRA) Project and aimed at developing a morphing flap, are illustrated. The reference device is a regional aircraft single slotted flap, enhanced with deforming capabilities to obtain improved hyper-lift performance. The design started with the identification of the internal architecture, intended to allow camber variations. A concentrated-hinge architecture was selected, for its ability to fit different curvatures and for the possibility of easily realizing an "armadillo-like" configuration, then avoiding the use of a complicate deformable skin. The flap layout is made of segmented ribs, elastically hinged each other and span-wise connected by conventional spars. Relative rotations of the rib elements are forced by SMA structural actuators, i.e., cooperating in the external loads absorption. Super-elastic SMA are used to make up recovery elastic elements, necessary to regain the original shape after activation. These further elements in turn contribute to the overall flap rigidity. After assessing the hinge number and the size of the SMA active and passive elements, the advanced design phase was dealt with. It was aimed at solving manufacturing issues and producing the executive drawings. The realized demonstrator was finally tested in lab conditions to prove its functionality in terms of whether target shape actuation or attained shape preservation under loads. On the basis of the numerical results and the experimental outcomes, precious hints were obtained for further developments of the concept.
Passive sensors such as Laser Range Finder(LRF) and Forward Looking Infrared(FLIR) camera frequently used for tracking aircraft landing produce the measurements of elevation angle contaminated by large noise due to the exhaust plume disturbance. This results in poor tracking performance if the extended Kalman filter is used for estimation of the range and elevation which are corrupted by the non-Gaussian noise such as plume disturbance. In this paper, an adaptive estimation filter and the extended Kalman filter is combined to produce a combination-type filter. In this approach the adaptive filter is used for the plume-type disturbance noise and the extended Kalman filter is utilized for the measurement of Gaussian type. The proposed combination filter is effective for the trajectory estimation of landing aircraft under the influence of unknown bias and numerical simulations illustrate the performance of the proposed filter.

Recently, home energy management system (HEMS) for power consumption reduction has been widely used and studied. The HEMS performs electric power consumption control for the indoor electric device connected to the HEMS. However, a traditional HEMS is used for passive control method using some particular power saving devices. Disadvantages with this traditional HEMS is that these power saving devices should be newly installed to build HEMS environment instead of existing home appliances. Therefore, an HEMS, which performs with existing home appliances, is needed to prevent additional expenses due to the purchase of state-of-the-art devices. In this paper, an intelligent inference algorithm for EMS at home for non-power saving electronic equipment, called legacy devices, is proposed. The algorithm is based on the adaptive network fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and has a subsystem that notifies retraining schedule to the ANFIS to increase the inference performance. This paper discusses the overview and the architecture of the system, especially in terms of the retraining schedule. In addition, the comparison results show that the proposed algorithm is more accurate than the classic ANFIS-based EMS system.
