  • The quest for enhanced thermal comfort for dwellings encompasses the holistic utilization of improved building fabric, impact of weather variation and amongst passive cooling design consideration the provision of appropriate ventilation and shading strategy. Whilst thermal comfort is prime to dwellings considerations, limited research has been done in this area with the attention focused mostly on non-dwellings. This paper examines the current and future thermal comfort implications of four different standard construction specifications which show a progressive increase in thermal mass and airtightness and is underpinned by the newly developed CIBSE adaptive thermal comfort method for assessing the risk of overheating in naturally ventilated dwellings. Interactive investigation on the impact of building fabric variation, natural ventilation scenarios, external shading and varying occupants' characteristics to analyse dwellings thermal comfort based on non-heating season of current and future weather patterns of London and Birmingham is conducted. The overheating analysis focus on the whole building and individual zones. The findings from the thermal analysis simulation are illustrated graphically coupled with statistical analysis of data collected from the simulation. The results indicate that, judicious integrated approach of improved design options could substantially reduce the operating temperatures in dwellings and enhance thermal comfort.

  • Background: Adaptive support ventilation (ASV), an automated closed-loop ventilation mode, adapts to the mechanical characteristics of the respiratory system by continuous measurement and adjustment of the respiratory parameters. The adequacy of ASV was evaluated in the patients with acute lung injury (ALI). Methods: A total of 36 patients (19 normal lungs and 17 ALIs) were enrolled. The patients' breathing patterns and respiratory mechanics parameters were recorded under the passive ventilation using the ASV mode. Results: The ALI patients showed lower tidal volumes and higher respiratory rates (RR) compared to patients with normal lungs ($7.1{\pm}0.9$ mL/kg vs. $8.6{\pm}1.3$ mL/kg IBW; $19.7{\pm}4.8$ b/min vs. $14.6{\pm}4.6$ b/min; p<0.05, respectively). The expiratory time constant (RCe) was lower in ALI patients than in those with normal lungs, and the expiratory time/RCe was maintained above 3 in both groups. In all patients, RR was correlated with RCe and peak inspiratory flow ($r_s$=-0.40; $r_s$=0.43; p<0.05, respectively). In ALI patients, significant correlations were found between RR and RCe ($r_s$=-0.76, p<0.01), peak inspiratory flow and RR ($r_s$=-0.53, p<0.05), and RCe and peak inspiratory flow ($r_s$=-0.53, p<0.05). Conclusion: ASV was found to operate adequately according to the respiratory mechanical characteristics in the ALI patients. Discrepancies with the ARDS Network recommendations, such as a somewhat higher tidal volume, have yet to be addressed in further studies.

  • Underwater communication is difficult to increase the communication capacity because the carrier frequency is lower than that of radio communications on land. This is limited to the bandwidth of the signal under the influence of the characteristics of an ocean medium. As the high transmission speed and large transmission capacity have become necessary in the limited frequency range, the studies on MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communication have been actively carried out. The performance of the MIMO communication is lower than that of the SIMO (Single Input Multiple Output) communication because cross-talk occurs due to multiusers along with inter symbol interference resulting from the channel characteristics such as delay spread and doppler spread. Although the adaptive equalizer considering multi-channels is used to mitigate the influence of the cross-talk, the algorithm is normally complicated. In this paper, time reversal mirror technique with the characteristic of a self-equalization will be applied to simplify the compensation algorithm and relieve the cross-talk in order to improve the communication performance when the signal transmitted from two channels is received over interference on one channel in the same time. In addition, the performance of the MIMO communication based on the time reversal mirror is verified using data from the SAVEX15(Shallow-water Acoustic Variability Experiment 2015) conducted at the northern area of East China Sea in May 2015.

  • In this paper, we analyze mathematically the performance of the gated service scheduling in the Interleaved Polling with Adaptive Cycle Time(IPACT) was proposed to control upstream traffic for Gigabit Ethernet-PONs. In the analysis, we model EPON MAC protocol as a polling system and use mean value analysis. We divide arrival rate λ into three regions and analyze each region accordingly In the first region in which λ value is very small, there are very few ONUs' data to be transmitted. In the second region in which λ has reasonably large value, ONUs have enough data for continuous transmission. In the third region, ONUs' buffers are always saturated with data since λ value is very large. We obtain average packet delay, average Queue size, average cycle time of the gated service. We compare analysis results with simulation to verify the accuracy of the mathematical analysis. Simulation requires much time and effort to evaluate the performance of EPONs. On the other hand, mathematical analysis can be widely used in the design of EPON systems because system designers can obtain various performance results rapidly. We can design appropriate EPON systems for varioustraffic property by adjusting control parameters.

  • The passive noise control techniques used until now cancel the noise in terms of the characteristics of materials, which increase the mass and the dimension and have a limit that is effective only to attenuate the high frequency components of the noise. But the active noise control techniques developed in recent years have merits that they decrease the mass and the dimension and are effective to attenuating the low frequency noises. In this paper, the real-time active noise control system attenuating the engine booming noise in a car using the digital signal processing(DSP) techniques in terms of the principle of active noise control. The multiple-error filtered-x LMS(Least-Mean Square) algorithm is used as the adaptive algorithm for active noise control and is implemented using the DSP processor Motorola DSP56001 as a controller. According to the result that the experiments are performed for the engine as the RPM changes in a car, the noise attenuating performances are achieved in an overall car interior and is verified to be 20 dB higher for pure-tone and globally, 15 dB.

  • In this paper, we propose an unequal protection physical coding sub-layer (PCS) forward error correction (FEC) scheme for efficient and high-quality transmission of video data over optical access networks. Through identifying and resolving the unequal importance of different video frames and passing this importance information from MAC-layer to PCS, FEC scheme of PCS can be adaptive to application-layer data. Meanwhile, we jointly consider the different channel situations of optical network unit (ONU) and improve the efficiency of FEC redundancy by channel adaptation. We develop a theoretical algorithm and a hardware method to achieve efficient FEC assignment for the proposed unequal protection scheme. The theoretical FEC assignment algorithm is to obtain the optimal FEC redundancy allocation vector that results in the optimum performance index, namely frame error rate, based on the identified differential importance and channel situations. The hardware method aims at providing a realistic technical path with negligible hardware cost increment compared with the traditional FEC scheme. From the simulation results, the proposed Channel and Application-layer data Adaptation Unequal Protection (CAAUP) FEC scheme along with the FEC ratio assignment algorithm and the hardware method illustrates the ability of efficient and high-quality transmission of video data against the random errors in the channel of optical access networks.

  • This study aims to identify the types and characteristics of followership perceived by hotel employees as emotional workers in terms of the diagnosis of their fellowship awareness toward their managers and the detailed patterns of subjective followership. The Q methodology is applied to find out the types of followership of hotel employees, the similarities and differences between each type, and the meanings of each type. A total of 40 questions are selected for the Q sample. The analysis shows that there are four types such as 'organizational oriented', 'individual oriented', 'adaptive oriented' and 'critical passive oriented'. It also shows that each type has a unique characteristic, and identifies the items in the all four types that they share or do not. This study is expected to present a new perspective on hotel management by identifying the characteristics of the followership from the perspective of the hotel staff who are supposed to do some emotional labor caused by the emotional dissonance hotel staff suffer.

  • In this paper, a new active noise control method was proposed to decrease a weight of car, and to increase a fuel efficiency and to provide passengers' comfort and calmness, instead of a passive noise control method such as sound absorbing and insulating materials. The proposed method is an enhanced active noise controller operating by a bidirectional control algorithm. The algorithm is simple to implement and available to analyze mathematically with nearly equivalent complexity of computation. Through simulations for engine noises of a car, the proposed controller was verified that its performances of time and frequency domain were superior to those of both feedforward and feedback controllers, and it had better capability of controlling the noises when the impulsive disturbance was flow in and the response of secondary path was varied.

  • In recent, as rediscovery of the modern value is developed through the support by the government and the reinterpretation of the traditional culture, a Korean-style house(Hanok) also becomes an object of interest. Among these various viewpoints to see the Korean-style house, the necessity of a new spatial design approach to contain the types and functions of the architectural space of the Hanok appropriate to the modern society is raised which is not a passive approach to preserve the existing cultural assets. Out of the methods of the new spatial design of the Hanok which reflect the paradigm of the times, this study has the purpose to make an approach from the viewpoint of 'Restoration design'. As the 21 st century started, the recycle design whose active discussion and performance is made largely by Europe and Japan can be called a design method in the hardware part which enables continuous adaptive use of a building by applying a new use purpose and method to a building which doesn't use the recycle design or has low efficiency. In that meaning, it can be considered to be a very important architectural activity historically, archltecturally and spatially. Based on the methodological characteristics of the recycle design, this study largely divides the types of recycle into coherent recycle and imagery recycle and dedto s detailed methods of space, consinto ion and material and wardrobe used for each case to analyze the methods of concrete recycle design through the methodological analysis of recycle cases of the existing modern buildings. For the objects of recycle cases of the Hanok made recently based on the design methods acquired here, it was examined how the architectural and spatial characteristics of the Hanok can be reconsinto ed through what kinrecycmethods. The approach of the recycle design is considered to be a cornerstone to show a new architectural and spatial value in the viewpoint of the Hanok existence in modern times.

  • UAComm (Underwater Acoustic Communication) is an active research area, and many experiment has been performed to develop UAComm system. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of modifying and applying VirTEX (Virtual Time series EXperiment) to medium long range MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) UAComm of about 20 km range for the analysis and performance prediction of UAComm system. Since VirTEX is a time-domain simulator, the generated time series can be used in HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) to develop UAComm system. The developed package is verified through comparing with the sea-going FAF05 (Focused Acoustic Field 2005) experimental data. The developed simulator can be used to predict the performance of UAComm system, and even replace the expensive sea-going experiment.
