  • Detecting an inter-harmonic accurately is not easy work, because it has small magnitude, and its frequency which can be observed is not an integer multiple of fundamental frequency. In this paper, a new method using filter bank system and adaptive predictor is proposed. Filter bank system decomposes input signal to sub bands. In adaptive predictor, inter-harmonic is detected with decomposed sub band signal as input, and error signal as output. In this scheme, input-output characteristic of adaptive predictor is notch filter, as predicted harmonic is canceled in error signal, so detecting an inter-harmonic can be possible. Magnitude and frequency of detected inter-harmonic is estimated by recursive algorithm. The performances of proposed method are evaluated to sinusoidal signal model synthesized with harmonics and inter-harmonics. And validity of the method is proved as comparing the inter-harmonic detection results to MUSIC and ESPRIT.

  • When tooth grinding occurs, electrical stimulation is given at the same time, and tooth grinding stops on such stimulation. Electromyography signals are used as control signals of electrical stimulation to disturb tooth grinding. However because of the electrical stimulation, the M-waves are generated and mixed with spontaneous electromyogram. In this study, we designed an optimal filter to remove M-wave and conserve spontaneous electromyogram simultaneously. The inverse power method (IPM) showed that the optimal filter coefficient is the eigenvector corresponding to the minimum eigenvalue of the input covariance matrix. In order to evaluate the performance of the optimal filter, we compared using a conventional band pass filter and adaptive filter using least mean square algorithm. The experimental results show that the optimal filter can effectively remove the M-wave compared to the previously studied prediction error filter.

  • Digital images are easily corrupted by noise during the data transmission, data capture and data processing. A technical method of noise analyzing and adaptive filtering for reducing of quantum noise in medical radio-fluoroscopy images is presented. By adjusting the characteristics of the filter according to local statistics around each pixel of the image as moving windowing, it is possible to suppress noise sufficiently while preserve edge and other significant information required in diagnosis. We proposed adaptive weighed median(AWM) filters based on local statistics. We showed two ways of realizing the AWM filters. One is a simple type of AWM filter, which is constructed by Homogeneous factor(HF). Homogeneous factor(HF) from the noise models that enables the filter to recognize the local structures of the image is introduced, and an algorithm for determining the HF fitted to the diagnostic systems with various inner statistical properties is proposed. We show by the experimented that the performances of proposed method is superior to these of other filters and models in preserving small details and suppressing the noise at homogeneous region. The proposed algorithms were implemented by Visual C++ language on a IBM-PC Pentium 550 for testing purposes and the effects and results of the filter in the various levels of noise and images were proposed by comparing the values of NMSE(normalized mean square error) with the value of the other existing filtering methods.

  • In this paper we propose an adaptive update rate tracking algorithm for a phased array radar, based on the interacting multiple model(IMM) algorithm. The purpose of the IMM algorithm hers is twofold: 1) to estimate and predict the target states, and 2) to estimate the level of the process noise. Using the estimate of the process noise level adapted to target dynamics, the update interval is determined to maintain a desired prediction accuracy so that the radar system load is minimized. The adaptive update rate tracking algorithm is implemented for a phased array radar and evaluated with Monte Carlo simulations on various trajectories. The evaluation results of the proposed algorithm and a standard Kalman filter without the adaptive update rate control are presented to compare.

  • Application of the Filtered-X LMS adaptive filter to active noise control requires to estimate the transfer characteristics between the output and the error signal of the adaptive canceler. In this paper, we derive an adaptive control algorithm and analyze its convergence behavior when the acoustic noise is assumed to consist of multiple sinusoids. The results of the convergence analysis of the Filtered-X LMS algorithm indicate that the effects of parameter estimation inaccuracy on the convergence behavior of the algorithm are characterize by two distinct components : Phase estimation error and estimated magnitude. In particular, the convergence of the Filtered-X LMS algorithm is shown to be strongly affected by the accuracy of the phase response estimate. Simulation results of the algorithm are presented which support the theoretical convergence analysis.

  • In the affine projection algorithm(APA), the projection dimension depends on a number of projection basis and of elements of input vector used for updating of coefficients of the adaptive filter. The projection dimension is closely related to a convergence speed of the APA, and it determines computational complexity. As the adaptive filter approaches to steady state, convergence speed is decreased. Therefore it is possible to reduce projection dimension that determines convergence speed. In this paper, we proposed the variable dimension affine projection algorithm (VDAPA) that controls the projection dimension and uses the relation between variations of coefficients of the adaptive filter and convergence speed of the APA. The proposed method reduces computational complexity of the APA by modifying the number of projection basis on convergence state. For demonstrating the good performances of the proposed method, simulation results are compared with the APA and normalized LMS algorithm in convergence speed and computational quantity.

  • For a lightly damped system, IIR based filter can have better performance than FIR filter as an adaptive filter in ANC algorithm. IIR based filter which has an infinite impulse response can model a lightly damped acoustic system with a small number of weights compared that of FIR filter and has no nonlinearity and instability problems on weight updating process which are associated to the conventional IIR filters. There are, however, some drawbacks such as design parameters to be determined earlier to get better performance and much increased computational power especially in the presence of error path. In this study, base filter parameters are determined in systematic manner, with the knowledge of the nominal impulse response of the system which should be identified, by Prony's method. Three methods reducing the computational load are proposed and their performance and application limits are discussed. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, an underwater navigation system with adaptive receding horizon Kalman filter (ARHKF) is studied. It is well known that incorrect statistical information and temporal disturbance invoke errors of any navigation systems with Kalman filter, which makes the autonomous navigation difficult in real underwater environment. In this context, two kinds of problems are herein considered. The first one is the development of an algorithm, which estimates the noise covariance of a linear discrete time-varying stochastic system. The second one is the implementation of ARHKF to underwater navigation systems. The performance of the derived estimation algorithm of noise covariance and the ARHKF are verified by simulation and experiment in the towing tank of Seoul National University.

  • An adaptive extended Kalman filter based on the maximum likelihood (EKF-ML) is proposed for detecting voltage sag in this paper. Considering that the choice of the process and measurement error covariance matrices affects seriously the performance of the extended Kalman filter (EKF), the EKF-ML method uses the maximum likelihood method to adaptively optimize the error covariance matrices and the initial conditions. This can ensure that the EKF has better accuracy and faster convergence for estimating the voltage amplitude (states). Moreover, without more complexity, the EKF-ML algorithm is almost as simple as the conventional EKF, but it has better anti-disturbance performance and more accuracy in detection of the voltage sag. More importantly, the EKF-ML algorithm is capable of accurately estimating the noise parameters and is robust against various noise levels. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs with a fast dynamic and tracking response, when voltage signals contain harmonics or a pulse and are jointly embedded in an unknown measurement noise.

  • Least-mean-square(LMS) adaptive filters have proven to be extremely useful in a number of signal processing tasks. However LMS adaptive filter suffer from a slow rate of convergence for a given steady-state mean square error as compared to the behavior of recursive least squares adaptive filter. In this paper an efficient signal interference control technique is introduced to improve the convergence speed of LMS algorithm with tap weighted vectors updating which were controled by reusing data which was abandoned data in the Adaptive transversal filter in the scheme with data recycling buffers. The computer simulation show that the character of convergence and the value of MSE of proposed algorithm are faster and lower than the existing LMS according to increasing the step-size parameter $\mu$ in the experimentally computed. learning curve. Also we find that convergence speed of proposed algorithm is increased by (B+1) time proportional to B which B is the number of recycled data buffer without complexity of computation. Adaptive transversal filter with proposed data recycling buffer algorithm could efficiently reject ISI of channel and increase speed of convergence in avoidance burden of computational complexity in reality when it was experimented having the same condition of LMS algorithm.
