  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the therapeutic effects of oriental medical treatment and oriental-western medical treatment on Bell's palsy. Methods : From 1st June, 2006 to 31th August, 2007, 30 Bell's palsy patients who visited the Facial palsy center at East-West Neo Medical Center within 7days of onset and treated for more than 4weeks were randomly divided into two groups. Group A was treated with oriental medical therapy(Acupuncture, Herb, Physical therapy) and Group B with both oriental and western medical therapy(Acupuncture, Herb, Physical therapy, Administration of prednisone). We evaluated the treatment effect of each group with the House-Brackmann Gross Grading System before treatment, after 1week, 2weeks, 3weeks and 4weeks of treatment. Results : After 1week of treatment, Group A showed better performance compared with Group B. After 3weeks and 4 weeks of treatment, Group B showed better performance than Group A. Conclusions : These results proved that combination treatment of oriental and western medicine was more effective than just oriental medical treatment in long term treatment of Bell's palsy. But we discovered that there were no significant differences between the two groups.

For evaluating change of pain, Visual Analog Scale(VAS) was checked before and after Treatment. Results : Both acupuncture therapy showed good effect on low back pain of acute stage. And test group showed better effect on decreasing pain than control group. It was proved by the difference between VAS checked before treatment and what checked after treatment. But it was not significant statistically. Conclusion : Near acupuncture point needling and remote acupuncture point needling can be recommended as a useful therapy to treat low back pain of acute stage.

In addition, the questionnaire for clinician about acupuncture therapy was performed and analysed to understand their applications. Results: The number treated with acupuncture was 69,797, 10.56%. Classified with ages, 3 months and below was 729 (1.7%), 1 year - 3 months was 5,035 (11.80%), 2 year - 1 year was 6,875 (16.10%), 3 year - 2 year was 5,540 (12.98%), 6 year - 3 year was 12.636 (31.94%) and 6 year and above was 10,876 (25.48%). The most frequent diagnosis taken acupuncture was atopic dermatitis (14.93%) and the next was rhinitis (13.80%). The most frequent type of acupuncture was laser acupuncture. The clinicians answered questionnaire agreed that acupuncture therapy is effective for pediatric disease treatment and fear about acupuncture of young patients was the most important obstacle. Conclusion : The acupuncture therapy in pediatric practice is not so frequent treatment but in increasing stage. Futhermore, in-depth research about acupuncture therapy in pediatrics is demanded.

  • Objective: To evaluate the treatment effect of Bee-venom Acupuncture on Neck Pain, which is well known for anti-inflammatory effect and function of activating immune system. Methods : We investigated 22 cases of patients with Neck Pain induced by soft tissue injury. One group was treated by Bee-venom Acupuncture therapy (Bee-venom Acupuncture Group :BA), the other group was treated by General Acupuncture therapy (None Bee-venom Acupuncture Group :GA). We evaluated the treatment effect of each group by few statistical analysis such as frequency analysis, Mann Whitney U test and spearman correlation analysis. Results : 1. In the age distribution of both groups, we found the highest frequency at the interval 35 to 45 years old. And in the number of medical treatment, Both groups show the highest frequency at the interval of less than four times. 2. BA was significantly decreased in VAS and clinical grade compared with GA. 3. We found significant correlation between period and number of treatment. So did we between VAS and clinical grade. Conclusion : As a result of thorough investigation, we could come to a conclusion that Bee-venom Acupuncture Group might have a notable effect on VAS and clinic grade.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Calculus Bovis Fel Ursi Moschus(BUM) pharmacopuncture on the treatment of acute low back pain patients. Methods : The subjects in this study were 30 patients with acute low back pain who were treated in Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Jein Oriental Medicine Hospital from November 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. These patients were randomly divided into two groups. In one group(control group), patients were treated with acupuncture. And in the other group(experimental group), patients were treated with both acupuncture and BUM pharmacopuncture. For evaluating change of pain, visual analog scale(VAS) and Oswestry disability index(ODI) were checked before and after. Results : Each group had significant decrease in VAS and ODI after each treatment. Experimental group had more significant decrease in VAS after each treatment than control group. Conclusions : We suggest that cotreatment of acupuncture and BUM pharmacopuncture on acute low back pain patients can be recommended as a useful therapy.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to review the acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) in China. Methods : The literatures were searched using the database-China Academic Journals(CAJ)(~2015.1.). Clinical studies of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for GERD such as randomized controlled trial(RCT), non-randomized controlled trial(NRCT), case series, or case report were included. Results : Thirty studies met our inclusion criteria: 24 RCTs, 4 NRCTs, 1 case series, 1 case report. Various kinds of treatment such as body acupuncture, abdominal acupuncture, acupuncture therapy with finger on back-shu point, electroacupuncture, acupoint injection, auricular acupuncture, and moxibustion were used in the clinical studies. The treatment groups take herbal medicines at the same time in 16 studies, and proton pump inhibitor(PPI) and histamine 2 receptor antagonist were used as a comparative treatment in the most of studies. Acupuncture or moxibustion treatments were done daily or 2~3 times a week for 5 days~18 weeks. All of studies reported higher effective rate in the acupuncture or moxibustion treatment group compared to the western medication control group. Conclusions : The results of this study could be used for the future practice and the clinical research about the acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for GERD.

  • This study presents a case of facial nerve injury that occurred after parotidectomy for a benign tumor of the parotid gland that improved with integrated Korean medicine (IKM). On June 24, 2023, the patient presented with facial nerve injury based on a facial nerve conduction study after parotidectomy, with a score of five on Yanagihara's unweighted grading system (Y-system) and a grade of five on the House-Brackmann facial grading scale (H-B scale). During the 15 days of admission, IKM treatments, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, herbal steam therapy, physiotherapy, herbal medicine, and thread embedding acupuncture treatment, were performed. After treatment, the strength of the orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and masticatory muscles improved, with a Y-system score of 17 and an H-B scale of III. In conclusion, the findings of this study confirm the applicability and effectiveness of IKM in the treatment of facial paralysis following parotidectomy.

  • Objectives : This study reports the clinical effects of Korean medical treatment on a patient with suspected diabetic muscle infarction (DMI). Methods : A patient diagnosed with spinal stenosis was suspected of DMI. The patient was treated with acupuncture, bee-venom pharmacopuncture and gastrocnemius stretching. Symptoms were evaluated by verbal numeric rating scale (vNRS), Oswestry disability index (ODI) and Manchester foot pain and disability index (MFPDI). Results : After approximately 5 weeks of Korean medical treatment, including 8 bee-venom treatments, vNRS, ODI, and MFPDI all decreased. Conclusion : The results suggest that Korean medical treatment is effective for treating pain caused by DMI.
