  • Objectives: The present study investigated the effects of acupuncture treatment and their mechanism by using the kainic acid (KA)-induced epilepsy mouse model. Materials and Methods: The seizure was induced by an intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 30 mg/kg KA, and the acupuncture treatment was subsequently administered to acupoint Shaofu(HT8) bilaterally with two pretreatment sessions before injection (total 3 times over 3 days). Twenty four hours after injection, we observed the survival of neuronal cells in the CA3 region of the hippocampus. In addition, the activation of microglia and astrocytes was observed by using CD11b and GFAP immunohistochemistry in the same region. Results: The results indicate that acupuncture treatment reduced the rate of neural cell death in the CA3 region of the hippocampus and decreased the activations of microglia and astrocytes in this region. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that acupuncture treatment protects hippocampal neuronal cell death from KA-induced epileptic seizure by inhibiting the activations of microglia and astrocytes.

  • The aim of this study was to elucidate the intramuscular arborization of the teres minor muslce for effective botulinum neurotoxin injection. Twelve specimens from 6 adult Korean cadavers (3 males and 3 females, age ranging from 66 to 78 years) were used in the study. The reference line between the 2/3 point of the axillary border of the scapula (0/5), where the muscle originates ant the insertion point of the greater tubercle of the humerus (5/5). The most intramuscular neural distribution was located on 1/5-3/5 of the muscle. The tendinous portion was observed in the 3/5-5/5. The result suggests the botulinum neurotoxin should be delivered in the 1/5-3/5 area of the teres minor muscle.

  • The depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle is a thin, superficial muscle located below the corner of the mouth. It is the target for botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injection therapy, aimed at treating drooping mouth corners. Hyperactivity of the DAO muscle can lead to a sad, tired, or angry appearance in some patients. However, it is difficult to inject BoNT into the DAO muscle because its medial border overlaps with the depressor labii inferioris and its lateral border is adjacent to the risorius, zygomaticus major, and platysma muscles. Moreover, a lack of knowledge of the anatomy of the DAO muscle and the properties of BoNT can lead to side effects, such as asymmetrical smiles. Anatomical-based injection sites were provided for the DAO muscle, and the proper injection technique was reviewed. We proposed optimal injection sites based on the external anatomical landmarks of the face. The aim of these guidelines is to standardize the procedure and maximize the effects of BoNT injections while minimizing adverse events, all by reducing the dose unit and injection points.

  • This study is designed to investigate the method of manufacturing herbal acupuncture through literature of oriental medicine. The findings of this study are as follows; 1. The methods of manufacturing herbal acupuncture go through the process of abstraction, purification, mixing, filtration, putting and tight sealing in the container, sterilization, quality control, printing and packing 2. There are many ways to manufacturing herbal acupuncture, for example water-alcohol precipitation, alcohol-water precipitation, liquid-liquid abstract, acid-base abstract, metal base precipitation, distillation, molecular structure, polyamide absorption, dialysis, and ion exchange, etc. And popular method is water-alcohol precipitation. This is through alcohol precipitate extracting the principal ingredients from water abstraction. This is very simple and efficient way using melting characteristics of compounds in herb to water and ethanol. 3. Sterilization of herbal acupuncture is through heating-pressure, boiling, steam flowing, low temperature, filtering, radiation, cooling, and microwaves. Nowadays filtering is commonly used. And sterilization is estimated by an examination of asepsis . 4. Herbal acupuncture must be undergo study and experiment to clinical use. The problems of herbal acupuncture are turbidity, instability, causing hemolysis, pain, and fever. So many provisions (addition, sterilization, and filtration etc.) must be prepared. 5. The theory of manufacturing herbal acupuncture is from oriental medicine, not western. So it must be corresponded to oriental medical theory, for example Gimi(氣味), Guigyung(歸經), Ingyung(引經), Bosa(補瀉), and Match of Herb. It is recommended that further study of many other sided investigations in the future.

  • Objective : This study was undertaken to determine if Juglandis Semen herbal acupuncture(Ja) has a protective effect against glycerol-induced acute renal failure in rats. Methods : Rats were dehydrated for 24hr and then injected with 5 ml/kg of 50 % glycerol, one-half of dose in each hindlimb muscle. In experiments for Ja effect, rats received 0.1 ml of Ja extraction in both sides of corresponding $Sh\grave{e}nsh\bar{u}(BL_{23})$ of human body and non-acupuncture points(the root of tail) for 3 days after injection of glycerol. The experimental group were divided into the Normal group, the Control group, the Ja to $Sh\grave{e}nsh\bar{u}(BL_{23})$ group(Ja-AS), the Ja to non-acupuncture points group(Ja-AN). Results : There were significant decrease of urine volume, BUN, fractional glucose excretion, fractional phosphate excretion, total protein level in Ja-AS as compared with the control group. Conclusion : This suggests that Ja-AS could be used in prevention and treatment of acute renal failure. However, the precise mechanisms of Ja protection remain to be determined.
