Objectives : Rotator cuff tear is a common disease that causes shoulder pain and disability. Sometimes surgical treatment is demanded and appropriate rehabilitation is also needed to provide functional recovery. This report is intended to estimate the effect of oriental treatment for the patients in rotator cuff surgery rehabilitation period. Methods : From 29th October, 2012 to 13th November, 2012, One male patient who received rotator cuff surgery was treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture and herbal medication. NRS and ROM were evaluated to demonstrate the effect of treatment. Results : The patient showed the improvement in shoulder pain and ROM. Conclusion : Oriental treatments such as acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medication can be effective for relieving pain and increasing ROM in rotator cuff surgery rehabilitation period.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of thread-embedding therapy against partial obesity. Methods : 9 women from 20 to 30 with partial obesity were treated with thread-embedding therapy and then surveyed satisfaction, reaction after treatment and whether they were re-treated or not. The results of before and after treatment were compared with physical measurement, body composition tests and fat thickness measured by ultrasound. Results : The satisfaction of patients was high and side effects were pain, bruises and unnaturalness of action, but 8 of 9 patients wanted to re-treatment. The effect of thread-embedding therapy against partial obesity was continuous and was most pronounced during the first week. Conclusions : Thread-embedding therapy may be useful to reduce partial obesity without different treatments of obesity, diet, exercise etc.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the duplicate effect of thread-embedding therapy against obesity. Methods : 5 women from 20 to 30 with obesity were treated with thread-embedding therapy and compared the results with physical measurement, body composition tests and fat thickness measured by ultrasound. Results : The thread-embedding therapy locally reduced body size and fat thickness and had a cumulative effect, but showed the greatest effect in the abdominal region. It didn't affect to the overall change of body composition. Conclusions : The duplicate procedure of thread-embedding therapy for obesity had a cumulative effect, but it depended on the treatment region.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to show the rationale of point-selection on the methods of acupuncture and moxibustion in the Rhinological section(in the Oehyeong chapter) of the Dong Ui BO Gam. Methods : First, We summarized the cause of each disease in the Rhinological section(in the Oehyeong chapter) of the Dong Ui BO Gam. Then, We explained the rationale of acupoint-selection referring to the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupoints in the Dong Ui BO Gam, character of each acupoints, flow of meridian pathways and specific acupoints etc. Results and Conclusions : Total 15 acupoints were used in the Rhinological section(in the Oehyeong chapter) of the Dong Ui BO Gam. Most of acupoints were specific acupoints. But, some rationale of acupoint-selection were explained by the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupoints in the Dong Ui BO Gam, flow of meridian pathways etc.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the patient with peripheral neuropathy, who improved by Oriental medical treatment. Methods : The patient was managed by acupuncture, moxibustion, physical treatment and herbal medicine. We checked digital infrared thermographic imaging(D.I.T.I.), electromyography(E.M.G.), nerve conduction velocity(N.C.V.), deep tendon reflex(D.T.R.), sensory recover area and range of motion(R.O.M.) of knee & ankle. Results : After 6 week treatment, clinical sign(the movement and sense of leg) of improvement was appeared. Also E.M.G., N.C.V., D.T.R. and D.I.T.I. was recovered to nearly normal range. Conclusion : The results suggest that combination of acupunture, moxibustion and herbal medicine is good method for treatment of peripheral neuropathy. But further studies may be required to concretely prove the effectiveness of this methods for treating peripheral neuropathy.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review the Seven Acupoints for Stroke and reveal the meaning of the composition of that. Methods : 1. The authors reviewed several literatures and studies related with the Seven Acupoints for Stroke. 2. We investigated the composition of Seven Acupoints for Stroke and found the mechanism of the function and clinical usefulness of that. Results and Conclusions : 1. Seven Acupoints for Stroke is composed of 7 acupoints, i.e. 1 acupoint of Governer Vessel, 2 acupoints of Yang Myoung meridian, and 4 acupoints of So Yang meridian construct that. 3. Seven Acupoints for Stroke can be used for many of central nervous disease related with stress.

Objectives : The objective of the current study is to optimize an acupoint electrical property measurement system by using the procedures and strengths of the Taguchi method. Methods : Taguchi method was applied in the optimization of the acupoint electrical property measurement system, as in the following steps: (1) determine evaluation index; (2) execute the 1st gage R&R; (3) identify controllable and uncontrollable factors; (4) design Taguchi crossed array layout; (5) execute experiments according to trial conditions; (6) analyze testing results; (7) determine optimum run; (8) execute the 2nd gage R&R; (9) confirm optimum run. Results : The results showed that electrodes with larger diameter and efferent electric current, with music played, can produce the larger different electrical conductivity between the acupoints and the non-acupoints under various conditions. Taguchi process optimization improved repeatability and reproducibility of the acupoint electrical property measurement system. Conclusions : In the optimized condition, repeatability and reproducibility of the acupoint electrical property measurement system was acceptable.

Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA), the laser acupuncture (LA) and the combination therapy (LA+EA) in a collagenase-induced osteoarthritis rat model. Methods : Osteoarthritis rat model was induced by injection of collagenase into left lower articular cavity (50 μl to knee and 10 μl to ankle). In order to assess the anti-osteoarthritic effects of EA, the 650 nm LA and 650 nm LA+EA, the histopathological findings and plantar withdrawal responses were analyzed. Results : All of the treatment methods used in this study were effective in reducing pain. All treatment groups were effective in decreasing inflammatory cytokines of TNF-a and IL-6; the 650 nm LA and 650 nm LA+EA groups significantly reduced IL-1β. Conclusions : 650 nm LA and EA inhibit the production of collagenase-induced inflammatory mediators of osteoarthritis.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of hand acupoint massages on ADL ability and grip strength of stroke patients. Method: This study was designed as a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group for pre and post-test. Twenty-eight patients were assigned to the experimental group and thirty to the control group. The hand acupoint massage was applied to both hands of the experimental group for sixteen minutes each time, a total of 15 times during five weeks. The patient's ADL ability and grip strength were measured before and after the program. The data were analyzed with mean. percent, chi-square, a paired t-test and t-test. Result: The level of ADL ability was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Also, the level of grip strength was significantly higher in the experimental group of the plegic side than in the control group, but not in the normal side. Conclusion: We have found that the hand acupoint massage helps the stroke patients improve their ADL ability and grip strength. Through this result, the hand acupoint massage could be considered as an effective application for rehabilitation of hemiplegic patients after stroke.
