We present the design and implementation of a unique sensing and actuation application -- the Illuminator: a sensor network-based intelligent light control system for entertainment and media production. Unlike most sensor network applications, which focus on sensing alone, a distinctive aspect of the Illuminator is that it closes the loop from light sensing to lighting control. We describe the Illuminator's design requirements, system architecture, algorithms, implementation and experimental results. The system uses the Illumimote, a multi-modal and high fidelity light sensor module well-suited for wireless sensor networks, to satisfy the high-performance light sensing requirements of entertainment and media production applications. The Illuminator system is a toolset to characterize the illumination profile of a deployed set of fixed position lights, generate desired lighting effects for moving targets (actors, scenic elements, etc.) based on user constraints expressed in a formal language, and to assist in the set up of lights to achieve the same illumination profile in multiple venues. After characterizing deployed lights, the Illuminator computes optimal light settings at run-time to achieve a user-specified actuation profile, using an optimization framework based on a genetic algorithm. Uniquely, it can use deployed sensors to incorporate changing ambient lighting conditions and moving targets into actuation. Experimental results demonstrate that the Illuminator handles various high-level user requirements and generates an optimal light actuation profile. These results suggest that the Illuminator system supports entertainment and media production applications.

In this paper, a mask-panel alignment robot system is considered for IT industry applications. Two kinds of solutions are suggested which are required in constructing a control system for the alignment robot with actuation redundancy. First, the kinematic solution for the 4PPR parallel positioning mechanism is formulated for an arbitrary initial posture, which relates the mask-panel misalignment in the task space and the desired actuator displacements in the joint space. Secondly, in order to increase the stiffness of the control motion and also to avoid the mechanical lock which may happen due to the redundant actuation, a new synchronous control method is proposed which has the merit of coordinating joint control motions while not losing individual joint control performance. In addition, the engineering process to develop a visual alignment robot system is described with the results of experimental setup and GUI software. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed alignment system control methodology and how much beneficial it will be in real industrial applications.

This paper presents a torque control method of a hydraulic actuation system for measuring the dynamic stiffness of missile fin actuators. We propose a new control technique called Dual Dynamic Torque Feedback Control(DDTFC), which improves the stability of the torque control system and enables fast tracking of torque command. The developed control scheme is derived from the physical understanding based on mathematical modelling and analysis. The dynamics of hydraulic torque control servo-system is unravelled via physics-based modelling and nonparametric system identification. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, the experiment is carried out with a test equipment for measuring the dynamic stiffness. The experiment and simulation results show that DDTFC gives stability improvement.

If an actuation system of the tactical missile is required very fast response time on conditions of short operating time and big loads on the actuator, we would prefer to adopt a small hydraulic system. In this paper, a mathematical model is proposed to analyze and simulate the small hydraulic actuation system. The mathematical model consists of a high pressure vessel model, a pressure regulator model, a hydraulic reservoir model and a actuator model. The suggested model is validated by comparison of simulation results with experimental data. The simulation results show that the mathematical model could be useful for designing a hydraulic actuation system.

The motion of flexseal bearing for movable nozzle has inherent nonlinear characteristics due to floating rotational center and compression by combustion pressure of solid motor. To perform precise attitude control in spite of these characteristics, the TVC actuation system requires counter potentiometer as an extra position feedback sensor of movable nozzle to form a compensated control loop. The prototype TVC actuation system, test equipments and compensated controller are newly designed, manufactured and tested in consideration of counter potentiometer. On the basis of integration test, the inherent characteristics of movable nozzle and control characteristics of its TVC actuation system are analyzed and summarized in this paper.
This article studies the secondary resonances of a clamped-clamped microresonator under combined electrostatic and piezoelectric actuations. The electrostatic actuation is induced by applying the AC-DC voltage between the microbeam and the electrode plate that lies at the opposite side of the microbeam. The piezoelectric actuation is induced by applying the DC voltage between upper and lower sides of piezoelectric layer. It is assumed that the neutral axis of bending is stretched when the microbeam is deflected. The drift effect of piezoelectric layer (the phenomenon where there is a slow increase of the free strain after the application of a DC field) is neglected. The equations of motion are solved by using the multiple scale perturbation method. The system possesses a subharmonic resonance of order one-half and a superharmonic resonance of order two. It is shown that using the DC piezoelectric actuation, the sensitivity of AC-DC electrostatically actuated microresonator under subharmonic and superharmonic resonances may be tuned. In addition, it is shown that the tuning domain of the microbeam under combined electrostatic and piezoelectric actuations at subharmonic and superharmonic conditions is larger than the tuning domain of microbeam under only the electrostatic actuation.
In order to develop a human hand mechanism, a 5-bar finger with redundant actuation is designed and implemented. an optimal set of acutator locations and link lengths for the case of one redundant actuator is obtained by employing a composite design index which simulataneously consider several performance indices such as workspace, isotropic index, and force transmission ratio. Each joing is driven by an compact actuator mechanism having ultrasonic motor and a gear set with poeneiometer an controlled by VME Bus-based control system.
The backdrivable servovalve is a desirable component for force and interaction control of hydraulic actuation systems because it provides direct force generation mechanical impedance reduction by its own inherent backdrivability. However, high parametric uncertainty and friction effects inside the hydraulic actuation system significantly degrade its advantage. To solve this problem, this letter presents a disturbance-adaptive robust internal-loop compensator (DA-RIC) to generate ideal interactive control performance from the backdrivable-servovalve-based system. The proposed control combines a robust internal-loop compensator structure (RIC) with an explicit disturbance estimator designed for asymptotic disturbance tracking, such that the controlled system provide stable and ideal dynamic behavior for impedance control, while completely compensating the disturbance effects. With the aid of a backdrivable servovalve, we show that the proposed control structure can be implemented based on a simplified nominal model, and the controller enables implementation without accurate knowledge of the target system parameters and disturbances. The performance and properties of the proposed controller are verified by simulation and experiments.
In the study, to minimize the error on guided control of the KV (Kill Vehicle) and to secure the hit-to-kill performance, a position accuracy inspection for the DACS (Divert and Attitude Control System) actuation system was proposed. The accuracy performance of the DACS actuation system is one of the most important factors in the interception of ballistic missiles. In order to validate actuation control accuracy of DACS system, an inspection item was set for position accuracy, and the inspection system was designed for DACS pintle. To measure the absolute position value of the DACS pintle, an external measurement system was developed using laser displacement sensors. The inspection system was designed so that it can be compared with the actuation command in real time. The proposed position accuracy inspection system can be inspected not only in a DACS system but also in missile system level. The position accuracy inspection was performed using the designed inspection system, and analysis of the inspection result.
Age of Information (AoI) has been introduced in wireless networked control systems (WNCSs) to guarantee timely status updates. In addition, as the edge computing (EC) architecture has been deployed in NCS, EC close to sensors can be exploited to collect status updates from sensors and provide control decisions to actuators. However, when lots of sensors simultaneously deliver status updates, EC can be overloaded, which cannot satisfy the AoI requirement. To mitigate this problem, this paper uses actuators with computing capability that can directly receive the status updates from sensors and determine the control decision without the help of EC. To analyze the AoI of the actuation update via EC or directly using actuators, this paper developed an analytic model based on timing diagrams. Extensive simulation results are included to verify the analytic model and to show the AoI with various settings.
