Study on Development of the Left-Turn Actuated Signal Control Method (좌회전 감응신호제어방법 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The left-turn actuated signal control method has been occurred various problems under the COSMOS. one of problems is a early termination for left-turn phase by u-turn vehicles at left-turn lane. Therefore, the purpose of this study is a development of the efficient left-turn actuated signal control method to improve the problem. This study was considered that setback the left-turn vehicle detector to the start point of u-turn line and adjustment of the passage time. For effective analysis of developed method, Traffic simulation was simulated by T-7F and VISSIM under various traffic conditions. The result was proved that the developed Method improved the effectiveness.

Quantitative Evaluation of the Semi-Actuated Signal Control Systems (반감응 신호제어의 정량적 효과 평가에 관한 연구)

  • This study evaluated the quantitative effects of the deployment of semi-actuated signal systems using field data. For this, a semi-actuted signal system was deployed in the regional roadway network extensively. This paper investigated an operating strategy of semi-actuated signal systems for field application, and implemented the functional strategy into the standard signal controller. The performance was evaluated using three measures of effectiveness such as traffic volume, travel time, and the number of delayed vehicle. From the analysis results, traffic volume increased about 9.4% and 11.3% for morning and evening peak periods, respectively. The average travel time was reduced about 6.3% and 7.8% during morning and evening peak periods, respectively because of the expansion of bandwidths for major streets. In addition, the number of delayed vehicles was reduced about 36.4% and 23.9% for morning and evening peak periods, respectively. It is expected that the effectiveness of signal control system can be improved by incorporating a properly designed semi-actuated signal system in regional roadways with directional demand variation.

Evaluation of Three-Phase Actuated Operation at Diamond Interchanges (다이아몬드 인터체인지의 3현시 감응제어 평가)

  • The performance of two single-barrier three-phase control systems at diamond interchanges was evaluated for various traffic conditions. To emulate the actuated signal control, hardware-in-the-loop system combined with CORSIM simulation program was used. Two performance measures, average delay and total stops, were used for the evaluation process. Results showed that the two three-phase systems gave similar performance in terms of average delay, but not stops. The delay performance of each phasing system was generally dependent on the traffic pattern and ramp spacing. However, there was a distinct movement preference for each phasing system. The total stops decreased as the spacing increased, and it was the most sensitive variable that can differentiate between the two three-phase systems. It was also shown that the hardware-in-the-loop control could be a good method to overcome the limitations of current simulation technology.

  • A national highway takes on an arterial roadway role between regions. It's traffic volume of minor approach is very lower than mainline because most of the traffic of national highway consists of through traffic. This means an actuated signal operation is more efficient on the national highway than pre-timed signal. actuated signals have detections on some or all movements except the mainline. In spite of these effects have been evaluated in previous studies, widespread propagation of actuated signal operation has not made so much in Korea. Because there are so many problems to use actuated signal as it is in side of roadway facilities. In this study, improved a actuation system for the national highway and evaluated it with field implementation.

Development of a Signal Control Algorithm Using an Individual Vehicle's Data in a Wireless Environment (무선통신 환경에서의 개별차량 정보를 이용한 교차로 신호제어 알고리즘 개발)

  • Recently, as IT technology and the ubiquitous environment have diffused, the application of these techniques are being attempted in the field of traffic operations and management. Therefore, it is necessary to develop data collection systems and signal control strategies that are suitable in the ubiquitous environment and that will improve efficiency and safety of signalized intersections. The authors conducted a study on the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) signal control strategy using a wireless communication network between individual vehicles and a signal-control system and full actuated signal control technique to propose a new signal control strategy in the ubiquitous environment. The WSN was defined to evaluate the algorithm used with PARAMICS API simulation. The simulation produced results that the WSN signal control is more effective than other signal control methods. The WSN signal control could reduce vehicle delay time to a maximum of 64% in comparison with other signal control methods in low and near saturation flow conditions.

Development of the Real-Time Simulator of a Turning-Type Sluice Gate Actuated by the Hydraulic Cylinder (유압실린더 구동식 전도 수문의 실시간 모의시험기 개발)

  • The real-time simulator of a turning-type sluice gate actuated by the hydraulic cylinders is developed using a PC and a visual C++ program language. The real-time simulator receives the directional control valve signal selected by the operator using the mouse, updates the state variables of the turning-type sluice gate system responding to the control signal, and draws the moving figures of the sluice gate, cylinder, reserved water every drawing time on the PC monitor. Also, the operator can observe the sluice gate angle, cylinder force, cylinder pressures, and hydraulic power representing the operation of sluice gate system through the PC monitor every drawing time. The simulator can be a very useful tool to design and improve the turning-type sluice gate system.

Decision of Optimum Cycle of Traffic Junction Vehicle Signal Control using Fuzzy Identification Algorithm (퍼지 동정 알고리즘을 이용한 교차로 교통 신호등 제어의 최적 주기 결정)

  • In this paper, noticing the point of human's ability which appropriately cope with vague conditions, we design fuzzy traffic signal light controller similar to human's distinction ability and decide the optimum cycle most suited to any traffic junction using fuzzy identification algorithm. In this study, for the control output decision process we design fuzzy controller better than electronic vehicle actuated controller in performance. We propose the cycle decision method which is not limited by the variance of traffic junction vehicle number through overcoming the limit of Webster's method which is adopted by the fixed cycle controller. Simulated experimental results show that fuzzy controller and fuzzy identification algorithm are better than the existing electronic vehicle actuated controller and fixed cycle controller in delay time per vehicle.
