Antitumor activity of organic compounds isolated from Korean mistletoe

  • Velutin and betulinic acid were isolated as a cytotoxic principle from the dichloromethane extract of Korean mistletoe (Viscum album var. coloratum) by repeated silicagel chromatography and recrystallization. In in vitro analysis of cytotoxic activity using NIH-3T3 cells, dichloromethane extract of Korean mistletoe was shown to be highly cytotoxic against tumor cells. And we obtained active compound (reffered to VD-2 and VD-6) from the dichloromethane extract. (omitted)

  • Since ampicillin, one of the important semi-synthetic derivatives of penicillins, is restricted in use because of its unfavorable physico-chemical and pharmacological properties, the author synthesized a new derivative, methampicillin lysinate and its physical and characteristics were determined. The antibacterial activity of this compound against ten species of Gram positive and negative bacteria in vitro showed that it was more active to Gram negative bactria than the positive and that was three times more potent than ampicillin trihydrate.

  • n-BuOH fraction obtained from MeOH extracts of Allium monanthum was applied to repeated silica gel column chromatographies to give a glycosylglyceride. The chemical structure of the compound was determined to be 1-O-linolenoyl-2-O-linolenoyl-3-O-$\beta$-D-galactopyranosyl-누-glycerol on the basis of NMR data and by the adaptation of chemical methods.

  • Anti-coagulant activities of 25 species of medicinal plants which have been related to "blood" in ethnobotany, were evaluated by plasma recalcification time test. Among these, Artemisiae Herba showed the strongest activity. Its anti-clotting component was purified by using DEAE-cellulose, Sephadex G-75, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Its active compound has an average molecular weight of approximately $10^{4}$ and it was turned to be an acidic polysaccharide composed of galacturonic acid and rhamnose (7 : 2) by chemical analysis and spectral data.

  • A series of 1,3-dioxoindan-2-carboxylic acid arylamides were synthesized and evaluated for in vitro cytotoxicity against four human cancer cell lines (HOP62, SK-OV-3, MD-MB-468 and T- 47D). The most active was compound 3e (1.2 ${\mu}M$ against SK-OV-3 cell line) bearing a 4- methyl substituent.

  • An antifungal antibiotic was extracted three times using n-butanol from the culture broth of Bacillus sp. Bioassayguided column chromatography with silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 yielded 62 mg of the original active compound from 1 L of culture broth. The minimal inhibitory concentration values were 25 and $50{\mu}g/ml$ against Pyricularia oryzae and Pellicularia filamentosa, respectively. Based on results obtained from the analysis of the structure of the antibiotic using MS, NMR, and IR spectroscopy, the antifungal antibiotic was shown to consist of only six of fructose.

  • Codonopside lc is an active natural compound isolated from the roots of Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae), a Korean medicinal herb. In the present study, we investigated the in vitro effect of Codonopside 1c on the proliferation and induction of apoptosis in HL-60 human promyelocytic cells. When HL-60 cells were treated with Codonopside 1c, evidence of apoptotic features, including DNA fragmentation, formation of DNA ladder in agarose gel elecrophoresis and increse of annexin V binding, were obtained.   • On the purpose of develcpement of antioxidative compound from natural sources, medicinal plants known to have antioxidant actuvity have been examined concening DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD-liked activities. Among 8 plants exhibiting the activity, Houttuynia cordata THUNB was selected as resources to search for active compounds due to rareness of study. The antioxidative compounds from Houttuynia cordata THUNB,quercitrin was assayed using a DPPH free radical. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of quercitrin was similar to that of BHA and Ascorbic acid
