  • Dichloroisoproterenol(DCI) i; one of the well known ${\beta}$-adrenergic receptor blocking agents. According to Moran and Perkins, DCI has sympathomimetic like action in relatively low concentrations. Fleming and Hawkins confirmed that DCI acts upon the receptors concerned with positive chronotropic and inotropic actions in the heart. Vogins reported that DCI, in concentration of $5{\times}10^{-8}$ to $5{\times}10^{-6}g/ml$, had properties of sympathomimetic amine causing positive inotropic and chronotropic actions in normal rat atria. And James and Nadeau found that DCI had not only adrenergic blocking effect in moderate and higher concentrations, but it also blocked the effect on the sinus node by vagal stimulation and of directly administered acetylcholine in higher concentrations. As stated above by many authors, DCI has complicated actions according to its concentrations. Our aim at the present experiments was to study the effects of DCI to the action of ouabain and acetylcholine upon the excised rabbit atria, as well as to the action of barium chloride and acetylcholine upon the excised rabbit intestine. In addition, Pan ax Ginseng is widely used as tonics in oriental nations, its pharmacological action, however, has not been clearly established. So we atempted to investigate the effects of the water extract of Panax Ginseng to the action of ouabain and DCI upon both atria and intestine. The results obtained were as follows. 1) DCI has a negative inotropic effect on the excised rabbit atria at concentration of $10^{-5}$ and a positive inotropic effect at concentration of $10^{-6}$. 2) DCI (at concentration of $10^{-6}$) potentiates the positive inotropic effect of ouabain upon the excised rabbit atria. 3) DCI antagonizes the action of acetylcholine upon the excised rabbit atria. 4) The water extract of Panax Ginseng, at concentration of $10^{-3}$, decreases the contractile force of rabbit atria, and tends to slightly increase that of rabbit atria at $10^{-4}$. 5) The water extract of Panax Ginseng exhibits a synergistic action with ouabain on the contractile force of rabbit atria. 6) DCI, in concentrations of $10^{-7}{\sim}10^{-6}$, depresses the tone and amplitude of contraction of the excised rabbit intestine. The depression of the intestinal tone markedly appears in pretreatment with reserpine 2mg/kg 24 hours. 7) DCI antagonizes the contractile effect of barium chloride on the excised rabbit atria. 8) DCI has no significant influence on the action of acetylcholine upon the excised rabbit intestine. 9) The series of those evidences indicates that DCI has a sympathomimetic-like action and more over a relaxing action directly on the excised rabbit intestine. 10) The water extract of Panax Ginseng in concentrations of $10^{-4}{\sim}10^{-3}$, has transient depression of the intestinal tone, but later gradually recovers its normal motility: 11) The water extract of Panax Ginseng has a synergistic action with ouabain on the intestinal contractility.

  • The general pharmacological properties of Artemisia extract powder (DA-9601) produced from Artemisia asiatica leaves were investigated in mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits. DA-9601 at the dose of 800 mg/kg po had no influences on general behaviour, barbital sleeping time and motor coordination of mice. The material at the oral dose of 800 mg/kg did exhibit neither analgesic action nor hypothermic effect. Anticonvulsant action, muscle relaxant action and the effect on intestinal propulsion were not identified at 800 mg/kg po. In the isolated ileum and trachea of guinea pig, the material did not show direct erect and inhibitory action of chemically or electrically stimulated contraction at the concentration of $2\times10^{-5}$g/ml. The sinus rates of atria and contractility of papillary muscle of guinea pig were not influenced by DA-9601 at a dose of $2\times10^{-5}$g/ml. No influences on blood pressure and respiration were observed at 40 mg/kg iv, in rabbits. However, transient decreases in blood pressure of rabbits were observed as given 120 mg/kg in iv route with slight respiratory depression, and slight diuretic effect could be found without any changes in $Na^+$ and $K^+$ excretion.

  • An understanding of the mechanism of concrete girders repaired with CFRP plates and its influence on the dynamic parameters is presented in this paper. Dynamic parameters are governed by the relationship with the physical properties of concrete girders and CFRP plates as well as the adhesive layer between them. A brief explanation of the mechanism of the composite action of concrete girders repaired with CFRP is also given in this paper. Experimental work was carried out to validate the theory of the composite action. The results show a decrease in the modal parameters of CFRP repaired girders that were turned over during the repair procedure, which contrasts with the proven static-based results that CFRP plates increase the stiffness of repaired girders. The composite action theory has explained the results based on the tension and compression forces' growth at the adhesive layer between the CFRP plates and girder surface during the repair procedure. Other girders were prepared and repaired without turning over in order to avoid tension and compression forces at the adhesive layer. The experimental results show an increase in the dynamic parameters of CFRP repaired girders that were not turned over during the repair procedure, which aligns with the static-based results. The study concludes that the dynamic parameters are excellent indicators for the assessment of CFRP repaired concrete girders. The study also suggests that researchers should not turn over damaged concrete girders to repair them with CFRP plates if they intend to study the dynamic parameters, in order to avoid the proposed composite action effect on modal parameters.

  • Chitosan, a deacetylated derivative of chitin, is one of the abundant resources, and its biological properties such as antibactierial activity, hypocholesterolemic activity, and hypertensive action are remarked. However, increasing attention has recently been yen to converting chitosan to its oligosaccharides because they possess various functional properties like antitumor activity, immune-enhancing effects, enhancing protective effects against infection with some pathogens in mice, antifungal activity, and antimicrobial activity (Jeon et al., 2001). • We compared the degree of color difference formed by environmental factor(temperature, relative humidity) with fungal growth in order to know how to change the color difference of cellulolutic cultural properties such as Korean papers, cotton, jute and hemp. We concluded, from the result, that the action of fungal growth on celluloytic cultural properties was more hamful than environmental factor. We considered the secretion produced by fungi as the causative agent for stained formation on cellulolytic cultural properties. Alternaria sp. colored allmaterials greyish black, Chaetomium sp. colored cotton and hemp orange, and Penicllium sp. colored cotton, jute and hemp yellowish green. But Trichoderma sp. and Aspergillus sp. didn't show a clear color against each material. It was observed that thymol(120g/$m^3$) was the most effective fungicide to prevent fungal growth.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental work on both mechanical properties and durability of concrete or mortar incorporating silica fume. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of replacement of silica fume on the performance of hardened concrete or mortar. The replacement levels of silica fume that replaced cement in this work were 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%, respectively. The results of this study indicate that both mechanical properties and durability of concrete are greatly dependent on the replacement levels of silica fume. As the replacement level of silica fume increased, the mechanical properties including compressive and flexural strengths, and static modulus of elasticity were proportionally enhanced. Furthermore, it was found that silica fume had some beneficial effects on the resistances to both chloride ions penetration and sodium sulfate attack. However, it exhibited poor resistances to both freezing-thawing action and magnesium sulfate attack.

  • Pyramidal cells in the hippocampal CA area were recorded from and filled with neurobiotin in anesthetized rats. The extent of their dendrites and the electropharmacological properties of membrane as well as the effect before and after neurobiotin injection were examined. Pyramidal cells had a high resting membrane potential, a low input resistance, and a large amplitude action potential. A afterhyperpolarization was followed a single action potential. Most pyramidal cells did not display a spontaneous firing. Pyramidal cell displayed weak inward rectification and anodal break excitation in response to negative current injection into the cell. Membrane properties of recorded neurons before and after neurobiotin injection with consecutive current injection were compared. Some properties were significantly increased after labelling(P>0.05); the duration and amplitude of sustained AHP, input resistance, and the number of action potentials for simultaneous intra- and extracellular stimulations. Neurobiotin-filled neurons showed pyramidal morphology. Cells were generally bipolar dendrite processes ramifying in stratum lacunosum-moleculare, radiatum, and oriens.

  • We investigated the effects of the amount of margarine and the number of layers on moisture content, baking loss, volume, hardness, maximum weight, and vapor action of the Danish pastry. The moisture content of Danish pastry increased slightly with the amount of margarine, as did the number of layers. The moisture content for a certain number of layers decreased as the amount of margarine increased. The baking loss with a fixed amount of margarine varied inversely with the number of layers, while the loss with a given number of layers decreased in proportion with the margarine content. The maximum volume of Danish pastry was obtained with 30% margarine-18 layers, 50%-27 layers, 70%-36 layers, 90%-48 layers and 110%-48 layers. The hardness and maximum weight of Danish pastry also varied inversely with the margarine content for a given number of layers, and decreased at a same margarine content when the number of layers increased. The maximum volume of the Danish pastry was obtained when vapor action was 9-16mm and 17-24mm. The optimal vapor action was in the range 9-24mm. In this range, the volume of the pastry was proportional to the vapor action.

  • Effects of external pH and potassium concentrations on the electrical and mechanical properties were investigated on rabbit papillary muscle. Papillary muscles were perfused in horizontal chamber with Tris Tyrode solutions and action potential along with isometric tension was recorded simultaneously. Potassium concentrations were varied between 1 and 12 mM at low(6.9), normal(7.4) and high (7.9) external pH. The following results were obtained: 1) On rasing the potassium concentration from 1 to 12 mM resting membrane potentials decreased from $-88.8{\pm}2.8$ to $-66.4{\pm}1.2\;mV$ at normal pH and the amplitude of action potential decreased from $115.1{\pm}0.7$ to $97.5{\pm}2.8\;mV$. On lowering the potassium concentration, membrane hyperpolarized and at 1 mM potassium concentration resting potentials were $-107{\pm}2.2\;mV$. Duration of action potential especially $APD_{60}{\sim}APD_{90}$ increased($APD_{90}$: $214{\pm}15.8\;ms$ at 1 mM $K^+$ to $287{\pm}18.1\;ms$ at 12 mM $K^+$). 2) During acidosis membranes hyperpolarized by more than 20 mV within 1 min. and then slow recovery was observed during the following 10 min. During alkalosis membranes depolarized about 10 mV, which were maintained until washing with normal Tyrode solutions. 3) On lowering the external pH(7.9-6.5), duration of action potential increased progressively and it was most prominent at pH 6.5 and $K^+$ 1mM. 4) Magnitude of developed tension was $0.6{\pm}0.14\;g/mm^2$ at normal pH and potassium concentration (stimulus frequency : 60/min). Relative isometric tension to normal value increased along the increment of stimulus frequency($44.2{\pm}4.2%$ at 6/min to $271{\pm}86.7%$ at 180/min). Force-frequency relations were altered quantitatively during the perfusion with different external pH solutions. 5) Developed tension did not show marked variation within the range of $2{\sim}8\;mM$ potassium concentrations. Positive inotropism was observed at less than 2 mM $K^+$ and negative inotropism beyond 12 mM $K^+$ concentrations. From the above results we concluded that the effects of potassium ion concentration on electrical and mechanical properties of rabbit papillary muscle are related to the changes in surface negative charge due to acid base disturbances.
