Epoxy resins are thermoset polymers that exhibit good adhesion, creep resistance, heat resistance, and chemical resistance. These polymers, however, give poor resistance to crack propagation and low impact strength. In this study, epoxy/carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) and epoxy/amine-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (ATBN) composites were prepared with different ratio of CTBN and ATBN to improve low impact strength of epoxy resin. The impact strength of epoxy/elastomeric composites shows high values with increasting nonpolar surface free energy while the tensile strength and the glass transition are decreased. The highest surface free energy, impact strength observed when 15 phr CTBN and 15 phr ATBN added, respectively. It can be concluded that as liquid rubber to improve impact strength of epoxy resin, ATBN is more preferable to CTBN.

While poly(styrene)-based anion exchange membranes have the advantage like easy and simple manufacturing process, they also possess the disadvantage of poor durability due to their brittleness. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber was used here as an additive to make the membranes have improved flexibility and durability. For the preparation of the anion exchange membranes, a PP mesh substrate was immersed into monomer solutions with vinylbenzyl chloride, styrene, divinylbenzene and benzoyl peroxide, then thermally polymerized & crosslinked. The prepared membranes were subsequently post-aminated using trimethylamine to result in $-N+(CH_3)_3$ group-containing composite membranes. Various contents of vinylbenzyl chloride and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber were investigated to optimize the membrane properties and the prepared membranes were evaluated in terms of water content, ion exchange capacity and electric resistance. It was found that the optimized composite membranes showed higher IEC and lower electric resistance than a commercial anion exchange membrane(AMX) and have excellent flexibility and durability.
Silica-filled rubber compounds show poor filler dispersion and slow cure characteristics compared to carbon black-filled ones. In general, a silica-filled rubber compound contains silane coupling agent (bis-(3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl)-tetrasulfide, TESPT) and diphenylguanidine (DPG) to improve the filler dispersion and to make fast cure characteristics. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) improves the filler dispersion in silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds. In this study, effect of NBR on the properties of silica-filled SBR compounds was investigated. Properties of the compounds which contain NBR without DPG or with small amount of TESPT (Compound A) were compared with those of the compounds which contain TESPT and DPG without NBR (Compound B). Scorch time of Compound A is faster than those of Compound B. Modulus and tensile strength of Comound A are slightly lower than those of Compound B. Traction property of the Comound A is better than that of the Compound B. Addition of NBR leads to reduction of the used amount of TESPT and DPG.
To overcome drawbacks of the nylon 6/poly (acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene) (ABS) blend, nylon 6 blend with poly (acrylonitrile - co-styrene - co-acrylic rubber) (ASA) which containing poly (butyl acrylate) as a rubber phase in substitute of poly (butadiene) in ABS, was examined. Poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) containing 25 wt% of maleic anhydride (MA) or poly (styrene- co-acrylo-nitrile-co-maleic anhydride) (SANMA) containing less than 3 wt% MA was used as a compatibilizer to fabricate blends having high impact strength. Changes in the mechanical properties of nylon 6/ASA blend with compatibilizer content were similar with those of nylon 6/ABS blend. Blends haying high impact strength was produced when blends contained more than about 20 wt% rubber. Blends containing SAM or SANMA as a compatibilizer were stayed in a injection molding machine at the molding temperature and afterwards specimens for the examination of the impact strength was prepared. Impact strength of blends containing SMA was decreased with retention time, while that of blends containing SANMA was not changed with retention time.

Thermal degradation of Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber(NBR), which is used for O-ring material as elastomeric sealed diaphragm value in the nuclear power plants, is examined. The thermal degradation is accelerated at 130$^{\circ}C$ by Arrhenius exploit method using the activation energy calculated by thermogravimetric analysis. The weight loss temperature and glass transition temperature are verified for thermally aged NBR. The relationship between dynamic mechanical properties and elongation at break are also investigated. The threshold alue of thermally aged NBR is a ten year in the change of elongation at break.
The linear viscoelastic behavior of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymers with different rubber content has been investigated in the frame of a linear viscoelastic model, which takes into account the inter-connectivity of the dispersed rubber particles. The model developed in our previous work has been shown to properly predict the low frequency plateau for the storage modulus, which is generally observed in polymer blends containing core-shell-type impact modifiers. In the present study, further experiments have been carried out on ABS polymers with different rubber content to verify the validity of our linear viscoelastic model. It has been found that our model describes quite properly the rheological behavior of ABS polymers with different rubber content, especially at low frequencies. The experimental data confirm that our model describes the rheological properties of rubber-modified thermoplastic polymers with strong adhesion at the particle/matrix interface more accurately than the Palierne model.
The conducting composites were prepared by emulsion polymerization with poly (acrylonitrile-co-butadiene) (NBR) as a matrix and polypyrrole (PPY) as a conducting polymer. Among several surfactants, the electrical conductivity of the composite which was polymerized by dodecyl sodium sulfate (DSS) was the best. The film of composite was prepared by compression molding. The electrical conductivity was measured by 4 probes method as a function of PPY and temperature. When the content of PPY was 25 wt%, the electrical conductivity of composite was increased up to 1.17 S/cm. The percolation threshold showed at the vicinity of 15 wt% PPY content.
Mechanical properties and their adhesion behavior with zinc- and brass-plated steel cords of natural rubber/acrylonitrile-butadiene blend compounds were investigated as a function of blend ratio. The Mooney viscosity and stress relaxation time were found to be lowered with increasing NBR content. Tensile modulus generally increased with increasing NBR content. Tensile stress at break stayed constant up to about 40 phr and showed minimum at $50{\sim}60 phr$, and thereafter increased with increasing NBR content. Strain at break decreased linearly below 50 phr, and above the level it showed nearly constant value. Based on the abrupt drops in elastic modulus and tan ${\delta}$ peak, the glass transition temperature of NR and NBR were found to be -55 and $-10^{\circ}C$, respectively. In the case of NR/NBR blend compounds, two distinct transition points were observed and each transition position was not affected by NBR level indicating an incompatible nature of NR/NBR blend system. The pullout force and rubber coverage decreased to the level of about 40% to that of pure m compound, when the 50 phr of NR was replaced by NBR. However, the pure NBR compound showed the comparable adhesion performance with NR(${\sim}90%$). The sulfur concentration was found to become lower with the increased NBR content at the adhesion interface based on the Auger spectrometer results, representing a lack of adhesion layer formation, and this was explained for a possible cause of low adhesion performance with adding NBR.
In this work, the influence of ozone treatment on surface properties of carbon black is investigated in terms of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angles. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the carbon black/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) compounds are studied by the crosslink density and composite tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$). As a result, it is found that the increasing of the ozone concentration leads to an increase of the introduction rate of oxygen-containing functional groups onto carbon black surfaces and to an increase of the surface free energy, resulting in improving both crosslink density and tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$) of the compounds. The results can be explained by the fact that the oxygen-containing functional groups of carbon black surfaces make an increase of the degree of adhesion at interfaces between carbon blacks and rubber matrix.

Flexible sheets consisting of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are newly prepared varying the composition (CNT 20-25 wt.%) for use as a current collector of supercapacitor electrodes. The as-prepared CNT/NBR is electrodeposited with aniline using potentiodynamic cyclic voltammetry to yield a polyaniline (PANI)/CNT/NBR composite electrode. It is confirmed that the electrical conductivity of CNT/NBR current collector can be enhanced as the content of CNT increases. Cyclic voltammetry result shows that the sample of PANI/CNT(25 wt.%)/NBR composite achieves a maximum specific capacitance ($134.9\;F\;g^{-1}$) at $5\;mV\;s^{-1}$. Such supercapacitor application is possibly originated from the synergistic effects consisting of higher polarity of nitrile groups in NBR, conducting pathway of CNT, and electroactive property of PANI.
