  • Various half-ester acrylates were prepared from anhydrides and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. Photocurable epoxy modified acrylates were prepared from synthesized half-ester acrylate and neopentylglycol diglycidylether. Physical properties such as hardness, yellowing, tensile strength and elongation were tested and compared as the structure of oligomer in cured-film differs. It was found that viscosity of neopentylglycol diglycidylether-hexahydrophthalic anhydride (NP-HA) was highest. Hardness and tensile strength of photocrosslinked neopentylglycol diglycidylether-hexahydrophthalic anhydride were better than those of other photocrosslinted epoxy acrylates. And 5% weight loss temperature of photocrosslinked neopentylglycol diglycidylether-hexahydrophthalic anhydride was higher than those of other photocrosslinked epoxy acrylates. Value of yellow index of photocrosslinked neopentylglycol diglycidyl ether-succinic anhydride (NP-SA) was lower than the other products.

  • In view of environmental considerations, the control of carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is one of important issues in the film and coating industries. Therefore, UV-curable system has been developed due to minimize emissions of VOCs and reduce CO2 emission due to low energy consumption from fast curing. Also, biodegradable polymers economically are attractive because of environmental and economic concerns associated with huge waste plastics. In this study, UV-curable polyurethane acrylates with different compositions of biodegradable polylactide (PLA) diol and poly(ethylene glycol) as diols were synthesized and curing reaction of their end-capped acrylates was performed by UV exposure. Tensile strength, elongation, and Tg of the UV-cured polyurethane acrylates increased with PLA diol content in the diol while their hydrophilicity and thermal stability increased with the PEG content. These results indicated a property of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates could be controlled by environment-friendly diols.

  • Urethane-acrylate propelymers for secondary coating of optical fiber and high - performance material were prepared from the 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), poly(tetramethylene oxide)glycol(PTMG, Mw 650 or 1000), 1,6-hexanediol(HD), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA), and dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. UV-Curable polyurethane acrylates were formulated from the urethane-acrylate prepolymers, three types of reactive diluents(DTs) having mono-, di-, and trifunctional-phenoxyethyl acrylate(PEA), hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA), and trimethylolpropane triacrylate(TMPTA), and 1-hydtoxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone(Irgacure 184) as a photoinitiator. The UV-cured films of polyurethane acrylates were obtained by curing using a medium-pressure mercury lamp(U W/cm, $\lambda_{max}=365\;nm)$. In this work, the effects of molecular weights of polyol and diol with low molecular weight into polymer chain on mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates were studied. The structure and properties of the films obtained from the UV photopolymerization of urethane-acrylate prepolymer were investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical measurement, tensile testing, and X-ray diffractometry.

  • In-situ photopolymerization of alkyl acrylate monomers in the presence of a nematic fluid provides a cellular matrix of liquid crystalline droplets in which the chemical structure of the encapsulating polymer exerts control over the alignment (anchoring) of the liquid crystalline molecules. Control is obtained by variation of the alkyl side chains and through copolymerization of two dissimilar monofunctional acrylates. Two monofunctional acrylates with opposing tendencies on copolymerization provide control over the tunability of anchoring over a wide temperature range. Using various acrylates we show that a uniform vertical alignment can be achieved over a large area. Utilizing this technique and a nematic with negative dielectric anisotropy, we have fabricated highly flexible liquid crytal based devices, with high contrast and fast response time, without using any alignment layer.

  • The effect of compositions of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDl)/4.4'-diphenylmethane diisocyalate (MDI) and polypropylene oxide diol (PPG, $M_w$: 3000)/1,4-butane diol (BD) on the properties of UV-cured polyurethane acrylate films based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) was examined. UV-curable polyurethane acrylates were formulated from the prepolymer. trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA) as a reactive diluent, and 1-hydroxycyclohexyl ketone (Irgacure 184) as a photoinitiator. Dynamic mechanical thermal properties and elastic properties of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates was fecund to depend on the chemical composition of IPDl/MDl and PPG/BD. As the BD content increased, the tensile storage modulus of all series samples increased significantly. The storage modulus increased in the order of samples A (IPDI based samples)> samples B (IPDI/MDl (7/3 molar ratio) based samples) > samples C (IPDI/MDl (5/5 molar ratio) based samples at the same composition. Two distinct louts modulus peaks for all samples are observed owing to the softs segment glass transition temperature ($T_gh$) and hard segment glass transition temperature ($T_gh$). The difference between $T_gh$, and $T_gh$, (Δ$T_g$) increases in the order of A > B > C at the same composition. In cycle test, the initial onset strain (%) was found to decrease with increasing BD content in PPG/BD and with increasing MDI content in IPDI/MDl.

  • The interaction between polymers and surfactants was investigated by means of rheological and surface tension measurements. The polymers used in this study were acrylates/$C_{10-30}$ alkyl acrylate crosspolymer (AC) and ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP copolymer (AV). And the surfactants were PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil (HC) and polysorbate 60 (P60). HC and P60 made the micelles intervening between AC polymers, resulting in the increase of viscosity. However, HC showed a similar behavior over the wider range of surfactant concentration than P60. Regarding of surface tensions in the same range of surfactant concentration, AC/HC solution showed the area of increasing surface tension with surfactant concentration in contrast to the AC/P60 solution showing no increasing area. It is assumed that the micelles between AC/HC were formed so cooperatively and strongly that the surfactants located at the surface originally moved to the micelles.

  • To prepare UV-curable polyurethane-acrylate oligomer, NCO-terminated urethane prepolymers with trimethylolpropane, [TMP; 0 (0), 0.1 (0.021) and 0.2 (0.043) mole (mole fraction)] as crosslinkable tri-functional chain extender were end-capped with pentaerythritol triacrylate [PETA; 2.0 (0.400), 1.7 (0.354) and 1.4 (0.304) mole (mole fraction)] with one hydroxyl group/three vinyl functionalities. The stable as-formulated UV-curable polyurethane-acrylates [stable mixtures of PETA-capped oligomer/reactive acrylic monomer diluents without/with heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (PFA; 0, 6 and 9 wt%)] were formed up to 0.2 (0.043) mole (mole fraction) of TMP content in the prepolymer, while homogeneous-mixing failed at 0.3 (0.068) mole (mole fraction), in which the crosslink density in NCO-terminated urethane prepolymer was too high to enable the formation of stable mixture. This study examined the effect of TMP/PETA molar ratio and heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (PFA) content (wt%) on the properties of UV-cured polyurethane-acrylates as marine antifouling coating materials. The properties of UV-cured polyurethane-acrylate were found to be significantly dependent on the crosslinkable TMP/PETA ratio and PFA content. With the increasing of the TMP and PFA contents, the contact angles increased, and consequently the surface tension decreased. The adhesion of algae/barnacles to PFA contained film samples were found to be sufficiently weak to allow their easy removal. These results suggest that the UV-cured samples containing PFA have strong potential as coating materials for antifouling applications.
